Jonna Helin is the co-founder, creative director and CEO of Laine Publishing and the editor-in-chief of Laine Magazine. She has also designed many of Laine’s most beloved knitwear patterns. During her long career as a journalist, Jonna has worked in lifestyle and crafts magazines both in Finland and in Sweden. Before Laine, she also ran her own yarn shop. In 2021, Jonna won the prestigious Taito-Finlandia award for her groundbreaking work on handicrafts and applied arts. Jonna lives in Tampere, Finland with her two children, cats and dogs. Jonna doesn’t actually consider herself a knitwear designer: usually she just knits and makes up the pattern as she goes. That also makes Jonna’s garments approachable and easy to knit.

I had a pattern question that Joji's support staff amply answered making me feel so confident in how I could proceed. That is a winning formula and it increased my interest in knitting more of Joji's beautiful patterns. P.S. I read the bios after I wrote my comment and wanted to add that I never knew Joji had studied as a physician. You go, girl - I am a practicing physician who will be 68 years old in 2024 this year and it is such an amazing delight to discover this unknown history of Joji's which may even better illuminate why I have always been so drawn to her. What a pleasure to learn this!

First of all, what a joy to be able to listen to these beautiful women share their stories. This is the best coaching session I've been to in my whole life... hahaha!
As per the comments, they are all very insightful but a quick shoutout to Joji! Dear, I hear you, I am also adapting to the increasing demand for video tutorials in patterns. I find it rather overwhelming since I think of myself primarily as a 'knitwear designer' and feel way more comfortable expressing my ideas in writing.
Ultimately, I feel I'm deviating from my work as a designer, which is to create beautiful designs and good instructions to knit these designs - not necessarily to become a one-woman media production company. That being said, we do need to adapt, certainly - and I will be adding tutorials to my patterns in the future, mind you, there's no way around it-. But I'm afraid I'm losing a bit of my own personal voice by changing the focus of my patterns from the written word to a video format.

Thank you so much for this thoughtful reply, Vanessa! We appreciate you. I know you'll be able to keep your voice with video. I like to write out what I am going to say before I record and not to always give myself a script but to make sure my "shine" is still coming through. Just a little tip that I hope helps. Also, you ARE your personal voice. This will never change no matter the format. You've got this. Can't wait to see what you do next xoxo -Jen
