- The Audi R8 is often considered a supercar that you can use all the time, but in Spyder form is that still the case? With 540PS from the naturally aspirated V10 singing away behind you, four-wheel-drive, and of course the roof down, let's go out for a drive.
Following the amazing collection day experience with a large group of customers all picking up their personal R8s from the Audi Forum at the factory in Ingolstadt, I had the opportunity to take the car on a longer stint and put it through its paces.

Hats off to you Tim for pointing out the negatives too. It's the first time I've heard you criticise exhaust crackles, the popularity of which I find baffling.
I think the fad of fake pops and crackles will go away in a few years.
After 5 years and considering the direction the industry is going (electric), do you still hold the same opinion? (Genuine question)

I think the R8 brought supercars to the masses, they are quite common now. There doesn't seem to be anything special about them. If one drove past I probably wouldn't really acknowledge it. But if a McLaren went past it'd certainly grab my attention. Just my opinion!
warren6815 yes, there is a few R8 around my way (north wales), no McLarens.
Looking at SoL lambo, I think they thane lost their magic metalness, next to the McLaren and even Sebs lotus, it looks boring. This is just a sensible version of a now boring car.
funny u say that. ive had just that observation one day in a small town in sweden and thats rare. prev gen r8 and mclaren 570 same day. 570 looks more super edit: powerplant excluded
warren6815 Yeah obviously the R8 is fairly cheap compared to a McLaren or most other super cars and then it‘s one of the best sounding cars in existence in my opinion.
Also the R8 is probably the most daily-driveable supercar you can get and I guess that‘s a big reason for people to choose this one resulting in way more R8‘s on the street than others..

Shmee, you describe the front of most cars as aggressive styling. To be honest, I think the front of this R8 is quite soft and timid. I think Audi could do more to the front styling tbh

It's good that you identified the paradox of the R8. It's more of a driveable supercar than practical. The 911 Turbo or Mercedes GT R are actually more practical.
IMO it's kinda awkward when there's someone next to you inside the car and doesn't say a word. Great video anyway :)

The ONLY thing "wrong" with the new R8 is the Plus can't be had in the convertible. Such a fabulous car.

Only negative point was the interference on the mic got a little annoying after a while but the noise of the car itself made it all worth it... I love the crackles!

Have a 2013 R8, non spyder, and it makes a good daily driver. It's the only supercar that I see that can do both without any issues.

Man, I really love the Audi R8! They should make a Targa R8 (just because they can lol).
i would love to see a comparison b/w this car and the AMG GTC roadster...
What I don't like about most open-top-versions of midengined-supercars is that they get rid of the window to display the engine. One of the few exceptions to that is the 430 Spider.
For me, the perfect Audi Garage would be a Q8 for the daily and R8 spyder for the weekends.

think as a DD id rather have a Granturismo or even an F-Type for about 1/2 the cost both which have the best sounding exhausts rivaling an F12 or Aventador

I don't think that camera on the windshield wasn't properly mounted. It seemed to have a base rattle as he went over bumps. Other than that Awesome video. The R8 is one of my top 10 dream cars.

Hell ya it is! A supercar that actually can handle being daily driven.

this vs. a McLaren 570 GT at $180k would be a tough choice. at least the R8 is NA whereas the 570 has those damn turbos f'n up the exhaust song

Never been a fan of drop tops even though my first car had one. Fun wise on a sunny day sure. Daily life? NO. Hard tops also look better. I see quite a few R8s daily so I would say they do make good daily supercars. 911s still dominate that scene but most non car people would be hard pressed to tell which 911 was the supercar version. Most know the R8 is something different. Awesome vid as always.

Tim would you say this would b a great model for someone who has never owned a sport's or supercar before? Therefore the lack of "sportiness" would not be noticeable.

The best daily driver that would leave most supercars for dead is the Audi RS6 Performance now that's a fast car plus you have all the space and is under the radar

You should allso buy an R8 V10 plus to add to your collection because owned an R8 before
The question is, this or AMG GTc, personaly I prefer the design of the AMG when it comes to convertibles but when were talking about hardtops v10+ for sure.
Hyper the inside of this is far cleaner than the merc. But I like how aggressive the GT is. This I think is very bland on the outside.
