  • We cannot wait to share one of the most magical days in Copenhagen with you because it got us so inspired and gave us so many new ideas- totally worth stealing from the Scandinavians!
    We’ve recently returned from a trip to Copenhagen, Denmark. We shopped at all of our favorite stores, bought some of our favorite items and explored this city that we love so dearly. We also spent the day at Tivoli Gardens, a cultural icon in the heart of the city. The center of a capital city may not be where one would expect to be inspired to garden, but in this case that’s exactly what happened. Tivoli inspired us to get outside, get our hands dirty, bring warmth and texture into our home and quiet our mind and enjoy the peace of the space around us. So this weekend, let’s do the same in each of our homes.

    The Tivoli gardens were exquisite! Some of the areas looked liked my Mum's garden, when she was alive she could take a cutting + pop it in her greenhouse & it was a plant next time you looked at it. Mum & Dad grew their own vegetables + would share it amongst the family. I still love the terracotta pots that are aged & sometimes imperfect with multiple plants spilling over. I share your love of a beautiful lived in garden filled with love. With Australias's harsh summers we have to water several times a day + protect with shade sails🌞☀️🌞

    My first comment to you two. I so enjoy your videos and am inspired by your style. Today, you made me tear up. I’m 70, and you’re helping me redesign my home. Of course I don’t have to have a “ grandma looking home”! I watch the fun Brit shows too. I also have always believed in using my China daily and always looking my best. Why wait? You’ve brought me such joy for over a year. I love your laugh, and wish I had one. I think Jack’s “ it really is” comment is the sweetest. Bet he doesn’t even know how often he says it. Thank you for sharing your talent.

    The type of garden that I love, might be what you actually are drawn to. I call it "Formally informal". By that I mean all the plant beds and pots are laid out in a grid formation - whether that grid be a circle a square or a rectangle. Pots can be exclamation points. The layout is formal in that it is not all over the place, BUT, and it is a BIG BUT, the plants are allowed to spill and flow naturally from their grids, planted in a dense, lush fashion.
    In the winter you are more aware of the grid and in the growing season the grid seems to contain the spillage in a loose, casual and restful manner. That is what appears to be happening in the garden you showcased. This is what I have created and everyone - and I mean everyone - that comes into my garden is immediately in awe of the lush but contained spaces. You can visibly see the stress leaving their bodies.
    I too, mix flowers with food, for example, now scaping garlic edges one 4x8 bed on the two long sides with two peonies spaced equal distance apart within the bed and currently blooming multi coloured bachelor's buttons create a mesmerizing chaos throughout the remaining space. In another bed I have red and green lettuce at the feet of climbing sweet peas, and so forth.
    And yes to showcasing garden design as well. We do live at a time where outdoor living is as important as indoor living. Loved the cart with a live roof covering the aged clay pots.

      Could you recommend any gardening books that would teach this type of gardening style? I’d love to give this a try! So lovely!

    • @EvelynM-vlogs
      @EvelynM-vlogs 2 роки тому +1

      @@bonniesmith6165 Unfortunately not, with the arrival of google, I rely on researching via the internet rather than buying books. I haven't bought a gardening book since the 90s.
      The style is quite simple. Use a sheet of graph paper and lay out the geometry of choice for your beds, either raised or not. Once the geometry is known, start working on a planting schedule based on sun, shade (what is there and what will be created by other plants), companion planting, and any other micro climate needs such as too wet, too dry, etc.
      While the plants are being decided work on your soil health, all kitchen and garden scraps should get dug into the soil for microbial health. If the soil is healthy, you will not need to feed the plants themselves and this is important as the plants will be planted closer together than normally suggested.
      All information is easily available via research on the internet.

    • @bonniesmith6165
      @bonniesmith6165 2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for your reply Evelyn, and your advice! You make it sound so simple! 😊

    • @EvelynM-vlogs
      @EvelynM-vlogs 2 роки тому +1

      @@bonniesmith6165 Instead of being overwhelmed by the final outcome, just spend the winter working on your garden's "floorplan" because no design can be successful without a plan. While working on that, start enhancing your soil Every yard and kitchen scrap can get should get dug in into the soil to feed the earth.
      Once you have a plan, start creating the beds while leaving wide enough pathways for plants to spill forth into. 42-48" are my favourite widths - like a good hallway design.
      Know that any perennials you add will probably be moved a few times before you are satisfied with their final locations. Annuals can be rethought each year.
      I don't like raised beds - except for pots - because they are not fluid enough as changes need or want to occur.
      From there, experiment, observe, take notes and don't be afraid to fail. That's how you learn

    You can not go wrong if you always follow the rule: right plant in the right place. We can not always have what we want if we are not in the correct gardening zone. Herbs do so well in pots. I always do a few tomato plants in pots on the deck away from the deer. Love allium in the garden. Your roses are gorgeous around your fountain. Do not change that part. The identify plant APP is wonderful. Start small with veggies and continue on as you succeed. My chives do so well in pots and come back so well. You can eat those purple blooms. This will be your new hobby and your Landon will love helping you both. Good luck.

    Thank you for taking us along on this adventure! Breathtaking beauty in the use of herbs and vegetables. Loved the huge rhubarb that looked like Elephant Ears!! Now I must plant some rosemary, thyme and oregano.

    Thank you for sharing. We returned from a vacation in Kentucky. Lush, dense foliage and everything was green. Beautiful! Colorado has pines of all kinds and Aspen, we are a drier state. It was interesting to experience high humidity too.

    You should go back when it's around Halloween! I got to go around that time a few years ago and it was so much fun. Ahh, I want to go back~
