Valentina, your videos have helped me escape the craziness of this world over the last week, and I am truly grateful. I’ve been binge watching from the beginning. We close on our new home next week and every- thing needs redone! I’m talking floors to ceilings and everything in between. Laying new floors and painting before we even move in, since we have the luxury of time. Thank you for giving us some of your time and your expertise. I’m learning SO MUCH about style and design. ❤️ stay blessed!

An option for your garden is a retaining wall to create that ‘wall’ and then you could add a hedge for more height extending the edge of your new wall. Then I would add a stone or brick paving ‘floor’

Fastest, prettiest hedge EVAH - Bamboo. Caution: giant species of bamboo can reach 50' to 70' tall in only 3 years. When you first transplant it into your garden, it is very unpromising. The saying is: first year sleeps, second year creeps, third year leaps. Bamboo does NOT grow in isolation - it creates lots of friends for itself. Plant clumps behind a barrier (so that it doesn't take over the yard) and the clumps will quickly merge and form a hedge all on their own. It will provide a lovely lacy wall of green that will block out not only your neighbours deck but your neighbours entire house while remaining lacy enough to avoid being oppressive. Then, level the lawn area and lay out your beloved formal paths (line with scrap carpet obtained for free from numerous dumpsters - it is free, water permeable, indestructible, and the tufted side holds gravel firmly in place). Create whatever pattern you want in different colors of gravel (MUCH cheaper than trying the same thing with solid paving stones). Use cheap garden bender boards to separate the gravel colors and keep everything tidy. I can't wait to see what you decide to do! Keep up the good work, and say "hi" to Jack and the kids for me :-D

I put up a hedge about 10 years ago. Florida is hot and at times dry, so I used Viburnum. Right now it is 10 feet tall and I have it pruned every other year. I dont know how it would do where you live. But it thrives here despite the occasional freeze
Hedges are even better at blocking noise than a wall. My parents had a wall, but it was just too expensive for my too large back yard and I do really love the Viburnum. Good luck. You will have a lot more choices in a cooler climate.

Stone is always the better way to go for resale and maintenance. Our landscape designer says you will get $1 for $1 back on what you invest in stone. Also maybe look into bamboo as a screen divider. It grows fast and tall and will support your world traveler vibe.

    • @Sarah-zb5it
      @Sarah-zb5it 3 роки тому

While I agree with the stone, bamboo is incredibly invasive and should not be planted in any way it could possibly spread. Like maybe a roof.

You always brighten my day...thank you, Valentina. Your Moroccan-inspired garden sounds divine. That is my style, too, although I'm a bit more on the bohemian side, and with a little bit of Bali mixed in. I can't wait to see what you decide to do about your backyard space as far as the hedge and whether you stick with a deck or go for the stone.I would live outside 24/7 if I could...it is almost possible here in CA.

OMG Your inspo photos are exactly the vibe I'm going for in my garden. I spent hours on FGT's website looking at trees because I don't want a regular fence and a stone/wall fence costs is insane. I'm not sure if I'm going for a hedge or not. I'm leaning that way for privacy but I think I may go for fruit trees. Maybe have an orchard row.

Fighting pollen in April is a losing battle in VA too. I really don’t even try. Thankfully rain has helped it this year. On another note, I’d keep the deck. A stone patio sounds nice but like you said, you’d have more step down and since your house isn’t stone, that step down may be hard to marry between the two. And I know the roses are only temporary around your fountain, I think they actually look really good against it. Kind of like you’re in the middle of a larger garden somewhere. 😊 I can’t wait to see how it all turns out. I’m drawn more and more to global/European looks in gardens and interiors and hope to one day own so I can creat my own back garden even if I have to settle for a fence versus a wall.

I have always liked walled gardens, especially those enclosed courtyard ones where the house is build around it totally, it’s very European and North African, I have almost the exact same iron garden chairs on your mood board I had them made in San Francisco, I seal them every couple of years and I’m sure they will last a lifetime and I won’t tire of them.

I spent the money on the stone patio instead of extending my already large deck. Less maintenance on the stone than my deck. And I really like the moss that is growing in the cracks. More cost up front, but more savings longer term.

  • @boysrus2

I live in Johns Creek. 5+ yrs ago we were choosing between a new deck or stone patio, low to the ground like yours. A stone patio was triple the cost of a wood deck. We chose a cedar deck, but I wish we had gone with stone. Wood decks require maintenance every couple of years with cleaning and re-sealing (more $ spent) and it’s a hassle. And every Spring carpenter bees focus on drilling into our cedar deck and our pressure treated lumber fence.

I love your picks for your back yard!
RE your question on whether to do stone tile, or keep the deck, I would consider resale value, neighborhood, and how long you plan to stay in your home before deciding, but I'm sure you already know this. 😊
I am facing a similar dilemma, and have been looking for a home in my area with a screened in porch/4 season room, but can't seem to get an offer in before it's already under contract. So I'm weighing the options of installing one in one of my existing homes. In one area, my home is in the country, and the homes are all different, with values all over the place, The house is 80 years old, and a style in which a 4 season room would look appropriate.
My other option is my home that's in a wooded subdivision halfway up a mountain, where the home values are mid-range where my 38 year old home is, but more custom and pricey higher up the mountain, where the great views are. I don't want to over-improve, here, because I'm not certain anyone would be willing to pay more for an upgraded home that is surrounded by mid-range homes, and we're only going to be there another 5 years or so.... but we're there more than the country home, and would love to be able to watch the animals and enjoy the views year-round. So I've concluded that if I can't get what I want within my budget and get my money back/profit when I sell, I'll probably forgo adding a 4 season room to the subdivision home and just screen in part of the deck, then build a spectacular 4 season room in the country home, where I can get a return on my investment. And yes, I'm doing this all for the cat. 😻😻👍

The pink flower at the end looks like an anemone! Lovely flowers :) Very excited to see what you do with your backyard!
Not sure if it'll help with the decision with your deck, but wood needs yearly maintenance to keep it strong and looking good, and even then it won't last forever, so I feel like the cost of stone can be a little more justified with the lower cost of maintenance, and ultimate longevity.

This is so CRAZY! I have been OBSESSED with whether or not to get the HOTEL oil diffuser. It's expensive, but I hear so many good things about it. IF you remember, I mentioned recently that I struggle with this OLD house that I bought. I am especially attuned to what my environment smells like. I would LOVE some scent that would lift UP this home so I could have a better feeling of peace and happiness here. I ended up getting a small (portable) diffuser, but it barely throws ANY scent into the room. Also, unfortunately, the scent that I bought just doesn't do it for me. I may have to bite the bullet on this and go with the HOTEL brand. Thanks for the post!

We truly love it. It's not a "marketing ploy" or anything like that. We have it going right now and it's SO GOOD! You can control how much fragrance goes into the air so it is incredible.

There is a deck system the uses granite pavers. Two of my friends have used it and it looks amazing. Much more like a stone courtyard look.

Can't wait to see how you style the deck. You could leave the deck in place and add flag stone patio in the yard🤔

keep the deck it is nice to step out easily from the house (without having to step down). Get some sisal or indoor outdoor carpet. Looks very pretty what you are doing.

Beautiful yard. Consider Italian Cypress for a "wall" feature? I say keep the deck, paint it black throw area rug down and add stone in garden area...Thanks for the inspiration!!!🌻🌵🌺

Here in India, Brick walls are so cheap, I was like, What is this lady speaking about!! 😲😲 I always felt that I am STUCK with a brick wall in my back yard and now if that's in Valentina's wishlist, sure I can find a reason to like it.😅

I LOVE your highlights!!! And Miss Dior and Mademoiselle are my two staple fragrances as well. Will have to try the Nomad. So excited for a new recommendation!
Can you plant spruce trees? They are fast growing and grow all over Europe, so you will get that worldly look as well as privacy.

Yes a beautiful hedge of arbs would do the trick. Sadly you’ll have to remove the trees so they get enough light. Good luck

Perhaps to try using Rain X on the outdoor glass table to help control the pollen and spotting on it.
