This man is such a breath of fresh air. Letting Valentina shine and support as needed. Looking at her with all the love when she is talking and supporting her with what she says! Lovely ❤️
You two go about everything with such thought and care. It’s refreshing to see humans who just reflect general goodness 🤗 I always leave your channel feeling warm and fuzzy
My mom always taught me to buy classic = sometimes expensive. Like she said she would rather have a room with hardly anything in it but what is there is one good sofa and coffee table rather than a room full of cheap crap. You guys are wonderful and love the videos!
Why does it seem like you guys would be the most fun couple to hang out with? I imagine a fun barbecue or trip to savannah, shopping for wool fabrics and sipping on a warm beverage and laughing and geeking all day about interiors!
You were sooooo SPOT ON regarding a couch. I lived with a couch I hated for 5 years. I FINALLY made an investment “gulp” in a couch (from West Elm), that I absolutely love. Everything about it is perfect. Still trying not to feel guilty about the price. But I deserve it. I almost got something...similar elsewhere, because of price, even thought I wasn’t completely happy with it, but the price was right. I almost settled. So glad I went with my gut and got what I loved and know it’s great quality rather than go for something I’ll also hate but got it because of price.
Valentina and Jack, I love your zest for life and your persistence in discovering what works for your family, then pursuing it. And... That you encourage us to do the same. I appreciate you both! Thank you so much.
You two definitely feed my soul with the joy of decorating my home. I've learned so much from you both. Thank you for educating and entertaining me to the max.
I will say, our white, slipcovered Ikea sofa has been with us for nine years - with a little kid for 8 of them! It needs a new cover, but I never would have thought it would still be in such amazing structural shape! Our pleather club chairs, not so much!
My palette is white, gold, grays (light and dark) and teal. I love it so much that, if it ever goes “out” of style, I’ll still love it! I spent twenty years living near the ocean on the California central coast and every color reminds me of it and transports me there in my mind. White is the wave caps and seashells, gold is the sand, light gray is the morning fog, dark gray is the rocks off of which the waves would crash and teal is the ocean color.
Thank you for giving us permission to show ourselves through our books through our homes and not hiding in them in our office spaces. Yes, it should be a joy and not a chore creating our homes
It’s a joy watching you two ! I am spending more on quality prices and have learned from you show where to find nice , reasonably priced things to update my home !
Love the chemistry You and your Husband have !! and absolutely love your laugh lol... Always look forward to your videos!!! Especially from store like Amazon, H&M Home and Zara... all places I can buy from in the UK !!... Thank you so so much!!! xxx
I am a penny pincher, I do not like spending money. I stumbled over your channel a few months back, and have come to enjoy, even look forward to, spending money (after measuring, comparing, and researching) to create a home my family and myself love. Your tips, tricks, DIYs, and advice, mixed with beauty and humor are helping me to enjoy homemaking. Thank you. ❤️
I agree with buying functional and beautiful. A number of years ago I heard someone say "You have to wear something, it might as well be pretty." Same idea with our homes. I appreciate all your tips. Thank you for sharing!😊
Loooooooooooooooooooove what you are saying about books! I was raised in the same way and my parents house had a library with architectural, engineering, interior design and of course literature, so books are part of me. And yes, for some folks they are just “another decor item”like a vase or a frame...sadly is the reality.... thank you for emphazising their importance!
I’m about to decorate a new home. I can’t wait. I’m going in with a black and white canvas and then I can add my accents. It takes time to build a home and I find that exciting.
I'm an interior designer and I agree 1000% with everything you have said! My husband and I moved into our first home about 2.5 years ago and we are STILL filling it out (probably bc I'm way too picky... it's a designer's curse lol). In all seriousness, we are taking our time selecting pieces that are timeless and of quality even if it means waiting and saving up for it. Of course we still shop at IKEA/Amazon/Target for smaller and/or seasonal accessories and we love to DIY where we can, but we do try to invest in the larger pieces that we know get a lot of wear/tear (i.e. sofa, bed, dining table). Carefully curating and setting that foundation will be so much more worth it in the long run. I still use Pinterest/mood boards for each of my rooms as a reminder of what I ultimately want. I will admit there are some pieces I already regret purchasing in a hurry and on the cheap.
Love you guys🤗.. This was great! .."capsule home" with seasonal changes because a home is never "once and done".. Life is fliud.. People change with time and their tastes change!.. Also.. 1) Have a plan and colour pallet based on your life passions and interested, 2) spend money on quality over quantity on key items, and 3) build up your items over time.. This is so much more sustainable and better for the environment!... Love, love, love this focus!.. Thank you for this!. Books are sacred! Love them! This is so European.. I guess your time in Scandinavian has really influenced you outlook as well as your style🤗.
I bought a house and going to move in in the next 2 months. With short budget you guys just confirm what I was wondering.... Good stuf and taken my time. Thanks from Brazil!!
Great video!! I love your ideas about "the joy of creating home"...you've really sparked a fire for this in my soul. I'm loving my home more and more. I also love how you talked about adding pieces over time and not doing everything all at once! This is not only budget friendly but takes the pressure off doing it all perfectly right now!! You both are the best!! Thank you!!!
It's so nice to see a couple who genuinely like each other. Obvious reflection of a great partnership. Really great design advice too. Just subscribed!
Same here…. I grew reading books… anywhere I would find one I would grab it and read. I literally go on vacation and always pick at least 2 books to read. I am a book addict … proud of it ♥️
Had my first visit to Home Goods and I had your voice in my head in regards to keeping your design plan and not just buying anything that you’ll regret it later . PS.. you saved me a lot of money and I’m really happy with the things I bought. I am very home and book centric like yourself💕love your videos.
I love the passion and sincerity you bring to your videos! It goes so much deeper than great “tips” (which they are) … you leave me with so much philosophy to consider as I enjoy the lifelong process of making my home the best representation of how I want to live and how I want others to feel when they visit. So inspiring! 😊❤️👏🏼
I wish I had more time to binge watch your videos. You are both so terrific, talented, and generous. The love and respect you have for each other just makes me so happy - its wonderful. And of course your creativity is off the charts.
I love how your husband is there and supports you. He does a great job. Both of you work well together. And I linger on your every word 😂 to help get me through my decorating quandaries… thank you 😊
I agree. You need to have a color palette planned ahead of time so all the items you place in the area are cohesive to the colors you picked. Or it won't flow right. Everything from the colors in your artwork to the rugs/furniture to the accessories you place around the home... When I go to someone's home the biggest mistake I usually see is a one dimensional look with no contrast. You have to have contrast to create interest. Whether it is pops of color or dark colors aside light ones. Different textures. Pay attention to the lighting in your home when you pick colors too...etc. And adding personal items for a homey touch. My two cents... So your tips hit the nail on the head! 😊
Wow I have been watching your videos for a very long time and I always feel like I get a ton of info and insight into design. This video really brought me closer to your heart and you as a person. You are really beautiful. Thank you for sharing and keeping it real with us 💕
I so agree with you about the books. I’ve always been an avid reader, too. In fact, my entire family has been since before I was born. It’s such a disappointment to me that the town I live in plus the bigger town closest to us have no bookstores. I remember the first mega-bookstore that came to my hometown in the 1980s and the hours I would spend there on my days off. One of my favorite quotes (I don’t remember the exact words or who said it) is the saying about buying books if you had any money, and if there was any leftover, you’d buy food!!
Thank you Valentina, for your insight on how to not " over kill " one's home. Books are great for any area in your home; I absolutely agree ( as I have more than you can imagine. Again, thank you for the advice on how to make my home warm and inviting. ❤❤
One and done is for eye shadow only! 😉 I think all the home design shows are to be thanked for that method. My house never feels done and for a long time that bothered me but I finally except that it will never be “done”. It evolves. Although. I may need to virtually hire you as pulling it all together is a bit of a struggle. Haha And I love that your one of the few designers that is not snobbish about what can or cannot. On books, love them but for me personally, it adds a cluttered appearance in my house. and something extra to dust. So i keep surfaces fairly minimal. I do love the look for other peoples homes.
So agree! I’ve learned the same thing - it’s better to put off a purchase, save and get what you really want vs getting a cheap version that doesn’t quite hit the mark and doesn’t hold up. I will save my money, then wait for a great deal. Not everything in my home is expensive or high end but I’ve gotten some great deals on key pieces that really set the stage. I don’t regret any of these purchases - however, impulse buys and things that are kind of right - those I regret and usually end up getting rid of. Great content as usual❤️❤️
I love your Channel & I am working on a plan for my home. I have started with the color & learning about paint. I have learned about the LRV value of paint & that is really helping me. I agree with you about books.
Val, I mean Really, girl! I know why I follow you because you are so good! And I will not let this day go by without thanking you for all the knowledge you have learned and shared with us! One's who just wants to get the best from our space. I just finished a show, and I'm always inspired, thanks to you and Jack. !
I LOVE these tips, and the great banter between the two of you, Valentina and Jack! The idea of having a palate is much smarter than just trying to coordinate colors with each purchase - something I've probably done over the years. And I love mixing more expensive and classic pieces with fresher, less expensive trendy items that I'll probably change out in a year. Pillows and plants can do so much to update a space, and I recently purged a large bookcase and it looks so much neater -- like the books and items can breathe now! Thank you for helping me to enjoy my space so much more!!!
My husband has also said we should have our furniture on wheels. I move stuff around…probably more frequently than most people. Glad someone else rearranges their stuff.
I love what you said at the end. The joy of creating a home! I have recently discovered this as I moved into a new home and all of a sudden have such joy in creating what it’ll look like. What you surround yourself really matters and enriches your life. Thank you for putting the message out there
Uggs are so comfy when you've been working on your feet 10-12 hours straight. Love them! 😍🤣 Totally with you on the books. I grew up in a home that didn't have many books, Now have enough to fill a huge wall of bookcases.
Loving these points! We're about to own our first home, it's in the UK and still stuck in the 50's-70's. It needs an overhaul, honestly the task is terrifying and your straightforward, warm approach is so helpful. Now I don't feel rushed to fill the void in a hurry and plough our stuff into every nook and cranny. Even my husband has been impressed by your appreciation for books in the home. Thank you for doing this, you have a beautiful balance as a pair! X
Wonderful video and thought-provoking! AGAIN!!! Love that someone else is "moving furniture crazy" like me!! Thank you for the point about putting books in a home-I am a former teacher and really wish parents would think like you-learn by reading and doing...thanks to you Jack. You both made my day!!
Another amazing collection of your thoughts for us to ponder as we walk through our own homes with fresh eyes. It’s so cool to have your words of wisdom sort of moving along beside us, as if to say, “Do you see what we mean?” I can totally understand a misstep so much better after listening to break it down as to why something doesn’t work, and then very often, hear your suggestion for a simple remedy. I know many times, I’ve had someone say to me, that they feel like they need to change out an entire room or space an start over because it just doesn’t feel right, and so they believe the entire concept is bad. And when my eye goes directly to the main problem , and I can to that and say, what about if this piece goes, and leaves a bit of room for shifting positions of other furnishings, or just allowing that amount of breathing room to remain open, it allows the mind to then continue to explore the power of one small creative switch, and then perhaps go on to say, okay now what if we were to change this expected piece, to something completely unique and let that be the interesting surprise that really pulls you in and brings the room from a predictable bore, to a more grown-up expression with confidence to build on. It may then be, that just one or two additional elements bring it all the way to fabulous. Thanks for your pointers that make us want to take another look and consider what is already there, through a different lens. Love the book reminder too by the way, makes me realize I should take the ones I have out of hiding, and let them be part of the action, rather than tucked away.
I've never thought of books in that way. There's a couple food photography books I'm thinking about buying, they would be perfect to display. I've been working on making my home look nicer over the past couple years. I'm carefully choosing things that go together and that I'm drawn to. I'm finding that I like subtle, nuture, soft tones in our main living areas. I added a little greenery, per your advice in a past video, and it does make a space look better. Still have a ways to go but like you mentioned, it takes time.
Great points. I personally don’t decorate or design for seasons or holidays except Christmas. I don’t subscribe to linen only in summer, velvet in winter. My sofa is velvet so it’s going to be out all year. I spend a lot of time curating so my space is what it is. I do move things to different rooms to shake up. I also do replacement of worn things. For some ppl they end up hoarding and being stuck. I have a friend who has a million things for spring then a million for summer then fall then the various holidays. Her garage is stuffed. Again it makes her happy so good for it. I’m good with tweaks but I prefer a ver my intentional design that I will be happy in for years. Also books are only good if you are an avid reader! I had a bunch of books and since I don’t go back to reread it became clutter to me. So I kept the ones I would ever reread or reference and donated the rest. I do like coffee table books for the look and to add personality. I agree the tech revolution will make books obsolete just look music no longer being vinyl, tapes, CDs.
I think knowing how a record player works and having your old records is nice. I kept my rack system in the attic for 15 years. Two years ago I took it out with the LPs and set it up in the basement. Guess who thinks it’s cool to use ? My artsy daughter and her artsy college friends. I’m listening to my old lps at high decibels while upstairs all over again and they gained a new skill set ! Btw LPs have a fidelity you will never ever get from digital. Set up those rack systems folks. I know some of you spent plenty on them and the Bose floor speakers. Or maybe you have Fisher?
I’m the same way I’ve never decorated my home for seasons/holidays only Christmas- I actually never heard of it until I saw people doing it on UA-cam just not my preference. but I do tweak certain items when I want a change. I have always mixed high and low in my home - great content!
@youbetcha108 you found a perfect use for something you don't actually "need." However, a big source of clutter, and especially hoarding, is this thinking of, "I/someone might need/use this someday." Or, "I paid a lot of money for this" or for sentimental reasons. I am going through this now as my husband and I buy a new home.
You two packed soo much sound info in this one! You have a keen sense of mixing high/low items and various textures resulting in a cohesive look. Would love to see how to translate what clients tell you to creating a look for their home. Tfs!
The two of you are gifted at empowering us in our decorating journeys, taking us from where we are at, without judgement, but educating us how to improve and beautiful our spaces. Thank you for being honest and genuine with your audience. You truly are “feeding our souls.” Greetings from chilly Winnipeg (Winterpeg) Canada.
Love this!! We are redoing our kitchen/dining/living space. Our current future is all brown leather & I’m bored with it. We have dogs with long fur so the leather is best but I’d love a blue leather couch. Was going to simply buy something cheap instead of getting what I know will be much better. Now I will wait & buy the more expensive item that I really want.
I am that person that feels like I need to have everything done and decorated in a few days. I am closing on my newly built home March 23rd. This was great advice for me. Love you two.🤗
My closet is full of blue, pink and green. My home is as well. During lockdown, I built a Southern Living, Sugarberry Cottage. I just look around and smile.
I remember that you originally wanted a black and white floor for your bathroom but I really love the tile you chose. I tried to copy it myself lol…but was unsuccessful and just ended up with a honed marble. I think you were smart to go with the elements you did in your bathroom because you can always change out small things like your mirrors and sconces to make it more modern but your base (your floor and shower tile, your tub and vanity) is classic and so high end looking. You didn’t go wrong!!
BOOKS!❤️ Half my bedroom is books. I just ordered some Ivar bookshelves to make a whole library wall in my living room! So excited to have everything finally organized!
"The joy of creating home". Sounds like you just found the title of your book! Actually that statement hit me hard and was quite poignant and made a tear come to my eye. Thank you Valentina, I needed to hear that. God Bless you both.
I'm always skeptical of a home without books. There's nothing like holding a physical book. We have Powell's book store near by and my husband and I would go there on date night. We'd rather spend money on books than an expensive dinner. Love you channel
Valentina, have you done a video regarding timeless design? (I am still binge watching your playlists.) I have had a lifelong passion for antique and vintage things from the late 1800s on yet want my home to feel fresh and interesting. You discussed the beautiful, old doorknobs in Europe (and black and bronze) and I wondered what other things you feel bring a timeless elegance to your home. Thank you so much!
Hi Valentina ! I really enjoy your channel ! Your tips are so relevant and appreciate your style and personality :) Please make a Capsule Home video, I need this video in my life hahaha (basics/key pieces for a home) ! You are amazing and thanks for sharing !! ❤️
Jack looks so kind and supportive. I want to see you more relaxed in upcoming videos. Looking constantly at V must be hard, let loose man and it will appear more natural. You guys are amazing, love your taste, love you both 💕
I love the way Jack looks at you, like he cherishes you so much!!!
This man is such a breath of fresh air. Letting Valentina shine and support as needed. Looking at her with all the love when she is talking and supporting her with what she says! Lovely ❤️
Valentina is blessed with her husband CAN WE CLONE HIM.?😁
P
Completely agreed! I was thinking this. They also really play on each other's jokes and I love it!
Yes! The way he looks at her!
They interact like besties, having fun together and enjoying each other
You two go about everything with such thought and care. It’s refreshing to see humans who just reflect general goodness 🤗 I always leave your channel feeling warm and fuzzy
Well said.

Exactly
Completely agree!

You do!! You feed our souls with the joy of creating home!!
I love that you say “ functional and pretty staples “. I subscribe to this concept, especially when I have a small space.
Valentina and Jack, I luv u guys straight away. What I enjoy is your humor, your passion for decor and your honesty.
Lovingly look at Valentina again! That man is a keeper!!!
My mom always taught me to buy classic = sometimes expensive. Like she said she would rather have a room with hardly anything in it but what is there is one good sofa and coffee table rather than a room full of cheap crap. You guys are wonderful and love the videos!

Yessss!!!! She is my favorite And her husband is the best! ✨Even when I cook I listen to her she has un undeniably fabulous energy ✨
“The joy of creating home” - just what I needed to hear today.
He treats her so well, and so supportive . They shine. He shines. You are amazing Valentina.

You guys are amazing, thank you for sharing all that knowledge and good spirit with all of us, love you guys!

I love Sherpa and boucle are my current obsession too 😍
Val, I mean
Really, girl!
Thank you for putting the message out there
Function & beauty…the very cool Kitchen Aid mixer on your counter Valentina😍
You've succeeded in constantly giving us the joy of creating home. Thank you
You’re so welcome!
Thanks for your pointers that make us want to take another
look and consider what is already there, through a different lens. Love the book reminder too by the way, makes me realize I should take the ones I have out of hiding, and let them be part of the action, rather than tucked away.
I'm such a fan. What I really love is that you actually share how to decorate. This is powerful to me. You have taught me so much. ❤️
Love your channel, your home like your life should grow and evolve. Thank you for sharing.
Loved this video! I wish you lived in California! Great ideas! I laughed when you talked about the spoons on Raymond!! Loved that show!
Especially now that we live a lot more in our homes. Thank you. Lots of great info.
It’s Jack’s stare for me!😍
You two packed soo much sound info in this one! You have a keen sense of mixing high/low items and various textures resulting in a cohesive look. Would love to see how to translate what clients tell you to creating a look for their home. Tfs!
I would LOVE a video on examples of capsule home pieces!!!
The two of you are gifted at empowering us in our decorating journeys, taking us from where we are at, without judgement, but educating us how to improve and beautiful our spaces.
Thank you for being honest and genuine with your audience. You truly are “feeding our souls.”
Greetings from chilly Winnipeg (Winterpeg)
Canada.
I love my 📚, great video.thank you!
Love books! The feel, smell and sight!
Yes, I buy books, read books, donate books, buy books, read books, donate books- all non fiction! So much enjoyment.... And I do keep my favorites!
Love this video! Thank you for all of the wonderful information! ❤️
Yes, books! Would you consider a creating a video on books that are or have most influenced you?
I love the classics, black, gray, beige. That's the color of my apt. I don't go for "trends", I go for what I love. Yu are my motivation.
Jack looks so kind and supportive. I want to see you more relaxed in upcoming videos. Looking constantly at V must be hard, let loose man and it will appear more natural. You guys are amazing, love your taste, love you both 💕
