Would love a vid on the different types of k-series and differences with specs and modification possibilities. There are a lot of vids that explain the differences between the different K series engines (A2, A1, A JDM) but curious how these make a difference when fully upgrading the cams, valves, rockers, springs, retainers etc. As always thanks!
Loved the vid. Wish you guys would show some shots of the motor while it was being assembled as well as realtime shots of the components. Keep smiling bro. we need more happy people in this world.
In 2010, I bought a S2000 with a scorched piston. I managed a Machine shop at the time so I was not afraid to get into the engine. I rebuild the engine using a stock K24 crank, K1 rods and Wiseco Dish pistons. We also bored out the cylinders and installed 2mm Melling repair sleeves. The engine was boosted with a V1 supercharger and made 420whp at 13psi and 300 flywheel hp natural aspirated. For the street, I preferred natural aspirated version of that car because you could use all the power all the time where with the supercharger you had to be careful not to oversteer the car and loose your ass. I sold that car and it is still riding around town 10years after the build. Everything was done on a budget with mostly stock parts. Honda did it right!
Mussh Wins the factory k24 Crank increased the stroke and made it a 2.4 Liter over the stock 2.0. It really gave it bottom end, my butt Dyno estimated about +50ftlbs. The F20 is rated at about 150ftlbs. So having 200ftlbs really made the S2000 fun to drive.
I want to build one so bad ! I have one that died because of lack of oil. I would love to build it for my 2000 civic. Thanks for the video! If I get well, Lord willing, I’ll hear that civic thumping the pavement!
Your not going to use nickel for strength when it only benefits from 5% difference in tensile strength. A forged component would still be cheaper and plenty capable with the new orientation of the grains. Yes corrosion resistance at higher temperatures but this is a heat engine, not a jet engine where were subjecting the components to above their melting points. The only material commonly found to corrode at temps like this are aluminum alloys, where hydrogen is more susceptible to diffuse within the material as we approach the melting point. Which is still not even close in the Carnot cycle these motors are running.
I love these kinds of breakdowns and knowledgeable talk-throughs! I'm not a Honda guy by any means but damn I might just build one with this info for a reliable fun project 😉👌
160hp per litre from a k20 is actually quite easy, one of my customers has 347 flywheel from a 2ltr with the right cams, rods an pistons on standard crank, all i do is change bearings an rings each season, but this will be season 3 so a new set of liners this rime round.... But EVERYTHING is cryo treated, then surface treated after 👍 This engine lives between 9500rpm and 11000rpm at every event, 16 events a year 😊
I once stroked out my fc20 engine with a Honda accord crank. We used 2mm melling repair sleeves. Had to make a custom spacer for the timing chain and that engine definitely made 300hp. Wished i ever sold it.
The thing about 2618 needing a ton of bore clearance is a myth... yes, it grows quicker than hypereutethics and needs it if your habit is to nail it from bone cold. If you don't want the skirt rattle, learn to load it gently until running temps are in and run 0.003" / 0.076mm clearance instead of the thou+ more the card says you "must have".. done that on several 80 to 85mm forced induction setups and never had one seize up.. rattle is gone and ring oil control is better (very short skirt piston).
I always wonder/wish Honda had made a variant of the K but at least the F series with 5 cylinders. Partially to honor their F1 program that was around when these engines were designed. But also to honor some modernization on the thing that made them famous (NA 4 cylinders). It’s a nice way to get some extra torque, and not experience much weight and packaging problems. Always seemed like a natural fit. But I understand that a professional company is risk adverse. And that they achieved all they needed to with a simpler, cheaper and more efficient conventional design. But I guess I wouldn’t be an enthusiast if I didn’t wonder about a Honda 5 cyl
Thanks for talking about the forging process and how it relates to grain direction. Really cool to hear about that, along with fatigue stresses and toughness.

Here in Canada we can get 94 octane from any old Husky that has 10% ethanol, or 94 on 0% ethanol at Chevron over in B.C. (it’s like $1.75/L last I went so bring cash lol)

The RBC came on the non-us Accord or the US 06 Civic Si. Both manifolds are good, the RBC is easier to find and a couple of hundred bucks cheaper. The RRC might make a little more power.
