      Depends on how much $$$ you've got to throw at your Z..Id rebuild the original with forged parts, balanced, ported, etc..then throw an electric-assisted turbo ( like what Audi/ VW uses) to cut turbo lag to zero and quickly get the 10-20+ PSI boost on...Or a belt- driven supercharger with intercooler...the original iron block can make 4-500 HP reliably tuned...no need to rev the crap out if it to great power like this pretty amazing mutant racecar engine that sounds Amazing....but it aint cheap and it needs to be fitted in with new mounts/ transmission/ driveshafts/ etc.

      Custom Street Rod Build - Garage Scene
      Pete Aardema
      From the March, 2008 issue of Street Rodder
      By Eric Geisert
      .....................
      Not afraid to try something new, pete will pull from any parts bin to make what he wants work. Porsche four-valve heads on a big-block chevy? No problem. A pair of subaru heads (with twin cams) bolted to a 200-cid model a motor? Already got one. How 'bout a simple overhead cam conversion for a small-block chevy? He's made more than 50 of them. And he's finally started to adapt the ford big-block fes with one of his single overhead valve kits, too.
      By accident, we discovered that the bore center on a 928 is within .030” of a BB Chevy and with help from Arias, an all aluminum 4-valve double OHC was born. The Dyno results at Westech in Mira Loma were better than expected. The engine made an astounding 550 ft. lbs. of torque at 2500 rpm.
      I was reading the latest issue of Hot Rod magazine and it mentioned how he got the 928 heads on a BBC block. He ordered the aftermarket block without all the machining done (no head bolt holes) and then drilled & tapped the block to match the head bolt pattern of the Porsche heads. I guess there was also a slight offset boring of the cylinders to better position things.

    Absolutely baffled how genius this engine is, having the air Intakes lower than the exhaust makes so much sense the hot air from the manifolds isn't going to rise into the top of the engine almost eliminating hot air going into the intake manifolds, it's a V8 with vtec that will rev up very high and could be very effective in a truck scenario low profile torquey cam profile then of course high end from the bigger cam would be a towing beast, If this can be made at an affordable price this very well has the ability to be a game changer

      @minimumeffortenthusiast8242 3 роки тому +42

      Because there's many engineering challenges that come with turning a L4 engine into a V8 as you might imagine. So it takes an engineer, with the proper connections and motivation to look at it and say "this is doable". No aftermarket company would spend thousands of dollars on manufacturing an engine they don't know how to make or might be a gamble to sell afterwards. Honda won't make it because Honda doesn't make V8s for the consumer, they've drawn the line on V6s and those will probably go out of the market soon enough as emissions become stricter and electrification becomes more apparent.
      Bottom line, this guy had all the resources and knowledge to start it, now that he has confidence in it, he can go all in and double down, specially when you have a severe health condition, having a project to keep your mind off things can help you cope with your condition a lot easier. So basically all things aligned for this guy and now we might just get to see a V8 K series. 🤷🏽‍♂️

    • @corbantwiss174
      @corbantwiss174 3 роки тому +1

      I like the exhaust on top because it would require less tubing for an intercooler with a turbo setup. And since heat rises you could potentially have colder air entering since the intakes are down lower. Having the exhaust on top like this will allow 8 to 1 exhaust setups much easier. I see this engine being used in racing applications a ton. Even personal off-road vehicles.

      @@corbantwiss174 I feel like the top mounted exhaust would probably be best suited for a transversely mounted application. This way they can be run in opposite directions and still be equal lengths. As far as intake is concerned, I don't know how I feel about dual throttle bodies for NA applications. Forced induction would certainly allow for a single throttle body mounted after an intercooler.

  • @InfiniteCheeseCrates

    Having the exhaust exit the top is going to limit the engine to FF, MR and RR cars unless you just dump the exhaust straight out the hood, otherwise you're going to have to place the engine so far forward that a typical FR car would become front biased OR you'd have to run the exhaust in front of the engine and wind up heating the intakes/cylinder heads and potentially risk vaporlock/overheating issues not to mention power loss from heating the intake air.
    Also by placing the exhaust up high like that is going to make this engine top heavy , that coupled with individual intake/throttle's is going to put a LOT of rotational stress on the cylinder heads. Craig would be better off redesigning/relocating the timing tensioners and going with a more traditional valley intake.
    I'm no expert though and I'm just going off the limited/basic knowledge I have of thermodynamics and physics.

    How was the bore spacing issue dealt with? I mean, a V8 is going to have wider bore spacing than an I4 due to the need to accommodate an extra rod on each crank throw. Were the mains and rods themselves made narrower to accommodate the tight bore spacing necessary from using I4 heads?

    • @marthamryglod291
      @marthamryglod291 2 роки тому

      Narrower rods and redesigned crank journals give enough room to keep bearing spacing in place. I'm guessing here. Seems the only answer with keeping bore spacing the same.

    • @matthewstorm5188
      @matthewstorm5188 2 роки тому

      @ Martha Mryglod There are a couple of other ways this could be handled. One would be a master rod setup similar to a radial engine. Interestingly, someone used this very setup when doing a similar project to this one - a V12 based on a Kawasaki KZ1300 inline six. An advantage here is that you could possibly use a stock crank without compromising strength so much.
      The other possibility would be a ‘fork and blade’ rod setup like a Harley V-twin. This setup would probably be cheaper than a master rod setup and have the advantage that both rods would still be the same length (unlike a master rod). However, it would be advantageous to make a crank with wider journals to increase strength.
      Both the master rod and ‘fork and blade’ setup would have the advantage of reducing bore spacing, which would enable the use of stock K-series heads. And with both setups, cylinders in each bank would be directly across from one another rather than staggered (like a traditional V8). This reduces engine length by a small amount, which could help with fitment in tight engine bays. But for a 10000+RPM motor, the ‘fork and blade’ setup would probably be better due to lighter weight and consistent rod length.
