Makes me nervous just thinking about the ow swim! Thanks for the video.

I started out by doing what you said in your other swim videos. Breathing out and holding onto the edge, sink downs etc. helped in a major way!

Has to be one of my favorite videos. I think I was guilty of all the four points in my first 70.3 last November in Sydney. Thank u. Saving this to watch it numerous times before my next one.

Thank you for posting this VERY important video. I think the swim really holds a lot of athletes back from trying triathlon. I’ve been thinking about doing a similar video with some slightly different tips. And the fear is legitimate. Thanks again for posting this!!! 👌

Awesome video! Open water usually doesn’t bother me at all, BUT I still had every single one of these problems during my first triathlon and it really did almost induce a panic. Going to be putting these tips I DTI practice!

Nice video Taren 👍🏼 I did my first ow swim this summer. I was struggling with 500 meters in the pool when I did the first ow. The wetsuit makes a HUGE difference! After a few times my breathing started to work, and I started to get the feeling of getting into a rhythm 😃

Very helpful thank you. First sprint in 3 days and wasn’t really nervous until this morning. I have gone out a handful of times to practice in open water and although not a strong swimmer, felt “good” not super confident but good enough to get it done in decent time, but this morning completely panicked. I seriously thought this is how someone can easily go under and no one would know. I felt like I wasn’t moving. Granted I’m not where I can freestyle. I’m more of the breast stroke person right now. I couldn’t catch my breath and wanted to just stop & be done. Anyway, had to talk myself through it, go slow and just focus on slower breaths & focus on the shoreline. So Scary!

Excellent videos on swimming. New subscriber and looking to do Aquabike next year and yes freaked out about the swim. I’ll start my swim training in September and will use your breathing for beginners as my start. Will also take a lesson or two here in Vancouver to ensure technique ok. I envy all those people that swim and look so relaxed. Like most of us I can swim but to swim for 45 minutes that’s what we all fear as beginners. Oliver BC 2020 and Penticton 2020 events are my goal.

    All good stuff!
A funny anxiety that I had at first (which was only two months and two races ago) was that I had to front crawl the whole swim or I wasn’t ‘doing it right’
A good breast stroke is a great tool to fall back on (at least for me) for a bit of a break during any anxious moment as it drops the heart rate but still keeps you moving.
Funny experience breast stroking past poor front crawls (especially in choppy water)

I wish I had seen this BEFORE my first triathlon haha! I did an Xterra tri yesterday that had two laps of a swim loop. I positioned myself right in the middle of the pack with and definitely panicked, adrenaline dumped, and couldn't catch my breath the whole lap. Luckily I regained my composure in the second lap toward the back of the pack.

I have become a more confident OW swimmer with a few seasons under my belt and I still hang out in the back. Works like charm since swimming is my weakest discipline.

Your information is vital for me. But...how do you do all of these type of things to train for triathlon by yourself? I do not have a group to train for as the schedules do not match. I have to fit my triathlon training around a kid and family. The more information I get the more I am learning that without a group to train with triathlon might not be possible for me. I am coming from a Martial Arts background so I am use to training by myself (I earned my Black Belt with the help of my instructor) I could not run or swim back in April. With the help of your videos I have been able to figure out both. I am not fast but at this point I am not stressed about that. I am not sure I could learn how to train with others...how do you find people that are at your same level? Maybe this is something you would be willing to address. Thank you

I am supper new to swimming...like trying to learn to breathe at this moment. My question is what do you do when they don’t allow a wetsuit? Thanks for any help. I greatly appreciate it.

Is that "muscle filter" an app or something...because that would be a LOT easier than having to do the workouts. You are looking quite buff, by the way.

I always afraid of water monster that is going to get me, so most cases I like people swimming close to me (unless they try to deliberately drown me, which happened). I also learned that taking couple of breast strokes at the start helps me to start breathing better, more calm.

Thanks TT - I’ll be tackling my first full distance IM in August (Tremblant) and am already worried about the swim - it’s a rolling start instead of wave and I’ve never done this. Usually I line up way to the side and let everyone go off but this doesn’t really work for this start type- any advice/tips for rolling starts? Appreciate all you do for this community. Cheers.

Just did 70.3 Ohio: rolling start was awesome. This race had athletes self seed according to swim time, and sent athletes out every 5 seconds , only 4 athletes at a time. It was sooooo stress free, I wish all events were like this.

Also, the timing didn’t start in 70.3 Ohio until you crossed the mat at the start of your own swim. It was awesome!

My wetsuit was super tight in my first race. Now I know. Thanks. I breaststroke slowly for 100 m, then freestyle breathing on just one side for a while. Then I relax into bilateral breathing by having a good pee. Haha.
