- Roger Daltrey guest stars on "The Leo Sayer Show" 20 Feb 1984. Together they sing the song written by Leo Sayer and David Courtney for Roger's first solo album "Daltrey".
Absolute class, two legends of their day
Excellent - Finds like this is what makes UA-cam great.
Nothing underated about leo sayer he is a true entertainer and skillful singersongwriter
I met Sir Gerard Hugh 'Leo Sayer' in 2008 at King's Road in the London Borough of Chelsea. We had a friendly conversation. He's 78 years in May 2022. May God bless him and Sir Roger Daltrey.
Who gave this a thumbs down? This is absolutely amazing *wipes-tears-from-eyes* absolutely first class.
Thanks for this video, you made my day!
Jackie Bell top tune x
Only leo can make the just a boy lyric go from high to low.. and mean what it should
Watch leo minstral version and notice the difference 😃
Ohhh how did I miss this epic event!! Wow !
@Jackie - Well mate, it's for that VERY reason that uTube SACKED HIM!!
- And all his other Thumbs-Down weeny buddies!! They're all history!
Great song - it's a toss-up for me whether I like Leo's version or Rogers better. But it was great that this song helped bring Leo the recognition he deserved!
I remember Leo explaining how this all came together in an interview back in the early 80s.He was friends with Roger and unable to get a record deal. Roger had asked Leo to write so songs for him and a week or so later came back with a bunch of songs. The album was a huge success for Roger and Leo s career took off from them. Roger always has been so grateful to Leo for the success of this album and for the start of his solo career.
Leo Sayer was a big star a LONG time before this one.
@@mjh5437He simply wasn't. It was Leo Sayer's breakthrough year , 1973 that Roger had a hit with this. He was an unknown when he wrote this
This was on Just a Boy album released by Leo in October 74 with his breakout hit Long Tall Glasses.
Not many folks had his Silverbird album, released November 73 at that time, but my brother did. We knew every word of every song, but never heard it get airplay.
When long tall glasses hit.. we heard that every 30 mins on radio.
Òther way round pal😂😂
It is 2024 now and two days ago, Roger Daltrey sang the song (he is on a solo tour), and spoke about this.
That performance? That performance? That performance? That performance is stunning! Effortless both men living those words.
I cannot believe this was one of Leo's productions!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤ Way to go Leo 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I read Roger's book last summer, what a lad, what a story of a self-made man.
I really want to read it. Read a few years ago the one from Townshend ant it was amazing too
Wonderful to see them both sing it....What a great song.
Leo sayer very underrated singer.great voice.
Underrated songwriter too.
No. He's not underrated at all. Everyone who should know , knows
Nah, he's rated way up there.
Nah, he's rated way up there.
Nah, he's rated way up there.
This is the best version of this song, the song writer and the original singer together.
treu
I agree
Co-writer
Leo wrote most of the tunes for Roger's first solo record, early 70s. I have it on vinyl. It's really good
I also Ned
I was just a boy
Hi ned .
Did leo write this song for roger ? Because to me leo steals this song just saying.
Although I've only heard Roger singing it ? Until I've seen this version. Great professionals at work !
@@chrislunnon1265 Not an expert, but yes I think that Leo wrote this one and the others on that old Daltrey album expressly for Roger. Leo is very talented, trained as a mime. Find his video for his big hit Long Tall Glasses. It's real fun.
Daltrey's voice was made for this tune! Would fit well into Quadrophenia, IMO
im thinking ...yeah. good call. maybe a little rougher version. a lil pete tone mixed in. good catch.
Leo and Roger singing live and a hard song to sing as well in the pebble mill studios, who out of the new breed of singers would do this now? I bet there wouldn't be many takers to put thereselves on offer like this
Even if you wrote the tune, it’s still got to be gutsy to do a duet with Roger.
bullshit, Leo is top-shelf
He smashes it though
I love Leo Sayer❤
Had no idea these 2 collaborated. Unlikely pair but enjoy seeing these surprises on the tube.
The album recorded by Rodger, written by Leo is brilliant
Wow ..much more respect for Daltrey
It's on a Daltrey solo album.
this probably my favourite performance on the whole of UA-cam!!!
Roger has the extraordinary ability to get inside songs and make them his, wonderful talent
Nice.
As huge a Who fan as I am through UA-cam you always discover something you've never seen before.
A duet between the singer and the writer.
Wonderful.
Interesting to hear Leo Sayer next to Roger, I didn’t realise what a damn great voice Sayer had.
Leo is a much better singer!
Leo has a great voice, and it hasn't lost anything at all. Still touring and filling up stadiums all standing and singing along.
I was going to post the same thing when I saw your comment. I'm a huge Daltrey fan but I know Leo Sayer too, of course. If anyone can hold his own with Roger Daltrey, they're doin' OK!
Leo's voice is awesome. Love all his songs.👍🎤🎵
Leo allways had great voice pop songs but good ones
Goose pimples up my arm listening to this - fantastic song - loads of meaning !!!
My friend chose this for his funeral as we carried him out of the church. And the whole of the church was in tears 😢
Very touching.
Lol
That made me 😢
@@Greg-b3b🤡
I pickef this song for my brothers funeral, just Leo Sayer though. Still evokes memories.
Me too, very appropriate lyrics sadly 😢
Pure class ! The songwriter and the interpreter together !
Just fantastic
Wow, when they sing at the same time, what a blend of voices! Effortless.
I was listening to a version of Leo Sayer of this song and thinking "I thought this was a Roger Daltrey song! Well, my memory is not what it used to be...
Then I found (thanks Google) it was written by Leo and sung by Roger! It was not a memory problem, it was a knowledge problem.
This brought many memories back, I was just a boy then.
I think Leo wrote Roger's first solo album.
I love this, a great moment in the history of popular music.
Two music legends. Superb performance.
one of the greatest songs of my mis-spent childhood, lol, I was twelve when this came out but I still love this tune :-)
+werewilf13 all the same here, I was 13.
:-) older and wiser, if music be the food of love, let it play :-) :-*
Great !
....should be naff....but it isn't....
These Guys were great and are still fantastic.
Pure class....Rogers blue eyes 😊
❤️ Cry every time i hear this. God bless The Who, Rog, and Leo..
Roger brilliant they are great together
Wow! The songwriter (Leo Sayer) and his singer (Roger Daltrey)... Sayer gives this tune to Daltrey for their first album "Daltrey" in 1973.
Also 'One Man Band' and 'When The Music Stops". 1/3 the the album and all 3 singles.
They sound great together
Agreed!
Huge respect to Leo Sayer
Leo was brilliant live early on. Listen to The Dancer.
have done bryan amazing tune
Lyrics are just simply magnificent , a life lost and found
Beautiful song makes you feel chilled and makes you smile
Much thanks to all my fans all over the globe, your comments and support has been my strength from the beginning. What part of the globe are you streaming from?
Still tremendous in 2019....dunno what you're up to now guys but I fucking hope you're both still rockin
Never knew Leo Sayer wrote this. Great song. Great bloke too, Leo.
No he didn't
@@neilmorrison3288 Never knew i was wrong with the idea that Leo Sayer wrote this song. "Ooooh and i know better now,,,,,"
Sound track to mcvicar?
Would two stars of this magnitude try and sing live like this nowadays
bloody hell .... performance by two greats! amazing !!!
Just superb, what a song
Leo sayer wrote the songs for rogers album titled Daltrey . So one man band released by both artists. Roger happened to be in studio at same time Leo was and as it wasn't happening artistically he asked Leo to help. I think other members of the who were doing own thing and roger at loose end.
Great vocals from both. Enjoy it. I certainly do. 👍
I remember seeing this live back in the day and was blown away by this joint performance from Roger and Leo it was pure class 🎶❤
Superb singers
The only singer who come close to daltrey
Simply fantastic 👏
That look Roger giver at 1:37. That's genuine! And then a fleeting Tommy stare! Genius performance.
Fantastic.
Great song. Daltrey's recording was released a year before Sayer recorded it in 74. But I recall Sayer singing a great version of the song on television.
Absolutely magnificent.
Daltry didn't give Leo the interchange that he deserved, disappointed in him. Fantastic song spoilt by Daltry's lack of warmth, it was like he was singing alone.
I love the smile of respect Roger gives Leo at 1:37. Great mates, for sure.
It's not a smile of respect, it's a philosophical smile in response to the line, "only myself to blame."
@@Greg-b3b It's both.
Two greats i've seen them both live, and they both ( Roger with the Who) put on great shows.
A beautiful song
Daltrey maintained his voice of the years.. great singer..
Well, what is better than either of these guys singing this song solo? the two of them together singing this song- fabulous
Roger blasting Leo away there. Don't think Leo should have put himself in direct comparison.
Saw Leo in Hunstanton last night...still got the voice...great show.
True story music moguls ripped Leo off hence the song read the pages on his c.d tells you most of his songs have a storyline...
Roger basically blows Leo away - far more depth of feeling is conveyed and, of course, his voice is peerless.
Fabulous!
Fantastic song and duo!1
2 of my favorite guy's,
Love Roger's Chuck Taylors.
And for any of you younger folks out there who don't know the story of Roger Daltrey and how he came to do that 1st solo album of mostly Leo Sayer songs, look it up and then go here and listen to a stone classic album from 1973 ua-cam.com/video/XZM-xS2cEsU/v-deo.html
Two legends performing a legendary song, an uplifting experience.
Wonderful!
Didn't think I'd like this, but I did.
A good song with two great singers
Brilliant song 🎵 from two legends 👍
The Master-writer and the Master-singer. Freaking awsome!
Love watching them sing this song. Both brilliant singers.
What a great pair
Great composition, leaves a lump in my throat 😢. Just a Boy, wish some of the guys I knew could've said and done just that. " I know Better now" yet some haven't learnt the separation of boyhood into manhood... Love these two in their careers. Awesome entertainers ❤️
@ 1:39 Daltrey, IMHO, different class as a singer ...
Thank you for your post awesome :-)
I love this ❤❤
Stunning..thank you..
Classy tune. 👍
Beautiful!
Great to hear them sing Leo's song together. Wish they would have done something more interesting like harmony singing (different vocal lines) in stead of this unison singing though.
This was my very first Single, i was 9 or 10 Years old in Lisbon. The B side also had a nice title but unfortunately I forgot it.
The way of the world.
Both are great.. But my greatest admiration is for the writer. From other videos I've seen, he is holding back to let Roger have a little limelight. Just my opinion..
ironheartinhell13 Totally agree!
Totally agree, love both versions though but cant decide which I prefer!
Me too...BUT...If push comes to shove I would say LEO
3cliffsbay Love it that we don't have to choose. Modern technology let's us have it all.
Ummmm...no
"It's a hard life...to sleep out on the highway you'll wish you never came."...Gave me goosebumps when I heard it first, all those years ago.
I first heard this song on Leo's album "Just a Boy". Who knows how I would feel if I heard Roger's recording first. Maybe that would have altered the way I feel about the way each singer approached recording the song.
As a rock and roll singer, I agree with many others who have commented on this video. Roger blows Leo away.
However, for this particular song, I much prefer Leo's version. Listen to each of their studio recordings of this song (not in this video but their own separate recordings and not live versions). If you're impartial, I think you will feel the same way. If you're a fan of The Who, I understand that it may be difficult to say anybody was better than Roger on any song, but for this song, I think Leo's studio recording was better.
Who!!!!!!! Doesn’t like this????!!!
A very good voices
One of the greatest songs.
THANKS
ICONIC!!!!!Two Great Singers ! ONE GREAT SONG 😀g
