I just did this last week on my 89 302 from an F-150. You're lucky you've got the roller block and cam. The 89's came with flat tappet lifters and a cam but oddly the block is a roller block. They just didn't start putting in the roller cams until later on. My flat tappet cam was destroyed and pitted to hell. My machine shop tells me that there have been a lot of issues breaking in flat tappet cams in recent years because of various manufacturing problems as well as new synthetic oils that lack zinc. Because of this I am going to convert my engine over to a roller engine. Will give me way more peace of mind. I couldn't imagine failing the break in and having to start all over again!
Yeah, that is a concern! Why take the chance? Going with a roller setup makes the most sense to me.
Nice job! Shouldn't be an issue running the stock pistons unless it needs bored. I like to replace oil pump, timing chain, rod and head bolts, and bearings at the least when tearing into an engine. NeoMustangs does a lot of engine teardown and builds. Live streams are pretty informative too
I most definitely plan to bore and stroke this block for another project down the line. Who knows what that will be!
