    Can I just say that I love this bike?!
    Behold the 2017 Yamaha YZ250X. This bike has been the most requested bike review over the past year. So many of us in this sport have been excited that one of the Japanese bike makers gave us a 2 stroke off road racing/enduro riding option. This is going to be a great bike to ride and give us a really fantastic alternative to the European bikes.

    Congrats on the new bike! I am not sure how many bikes you've had but you sir are seriously dedicated to providing us with your hands on opinions of these bikes. It's not like you have a dealership that let's you keep one for a couple days. You are actually buying and selling brand new bikes off the showroom floor. I definetly appreciate it and am always looking forward to the next!

    I picked up the 16 about a month ago. Coming off an 06 YZ450f and not riding in a year. This is by far the best bike I've owned. I'll be getting back into Hare Scrambles with it next year but so far I've ridden about 55 miles behind my son on his first couple times trail riding, took it to a track day and busted out a 40 mile loop at a race pace (my race pace ). 1st gear is great for me as there is so much torque down low and no worries about stalling like the 450. I find 3rd-4th a bit far on a track but in the woods it's perfect as you're not trying to stay balls out for most of it. It starts first kick every time, and I had to start a ton as I helped my son pick his bike up and get going again every couple hundred feet in the sand. The suspension is great and handles slow snotty uphills to fast sand whoops just as good as my 450, if not better. I personally don't want E-start or a hydraulic clutch (this one is very light). I love that this bike isn't an enduro bike, it's an off-road race bike.

      I'll second the first kick every time.

    I came off a WR 450 and bought this and it feels like a mountain bike. If it weren't for your videos I would've never bought a two stroke. This is the best bike I've ever owned! Add a fly wheel weight and it is a manageable. So glad you are reviewing it!

    What an awesome briefing on the bike. Everything I wanted to know you hit on. I'm getting to really enjoy your channel, great show. You are becoming a lot better rider too. Thanks for a great job and sharing so much information. I would love to try a lighter bike, but like you said, there are parts to my heavier 450 that I really like as well. The older I get the lighter the bike I want, though.

    Hey Kyle great to see you review this bike. I bought the first one my local dealer got in one year ago. Interestingly, yesterday I was out for a ride and had the misfortune of having a crash and slicing open a coolant hose. So I spent the rest of the ride on a 2013 300XC that was a spare bike in our group. It was super fun to be able to compare the two bikes. It sounds like your experience is very much like mine, the 300 has boatloads of torque down low and really is an easy bike to ride in technical rocky, steep single track. But I sure do find the YZ250X a much more fun bike to ride. It really does seem like a great cross between a pure MX bike and a really capable woods bike. Mine's been very reliable and I don't regret for a second buying it.

    first gear is high , 13 tooth sprocket fixes that . cdi is differnt . power valve shape is different . ypvs timing is different , compression ratio , 3rd 4th 5th different . but 5th is not high enough i find , kyle how much do you weigh and why did you touch the suspension ? the 2016 ktms i rode were horrible in the suspension department and the 250x is amazing . a fly wheel weight helps heaps for the high gear low rev pulls and right off the bottom

    So whats the difference in the 250 and 250x. Is the x more of a trail bike doing these sort of runs in the video and the 250 is a hardcore motocross track bike ?

  • @Saa45MIV
    @Saa45MIV 8 років тому

    Got my x totally dialed in!
    -jetting, 48/178
    -gearing 13 tooth front stock 50 back
    -exhaust, fmf gnarly with fmf turbinecore 2.0
    -steahly 11oz flywheel weight
    Consensus.. I now like this bike more than my old 300 (aside from missing electric start).. And the fmf gnarly was a game changer with this bike. I read in mx magazine they didnt experience much for gains but i totally disagree, it made the power delivery incredibly strong and smooth

    Great to see the 250X on here. I have a bit of time on mine and really do think it is a fantastic bike. I thought first was a little tall for my tastes as well and went down 1 tooth on the front and it helped quite a bit. It also made that big gap between 3rd and 4th a little less annoying. I like the fact that you pony up and buy bikes to test and give a real world opinion. Good stuff here.

    I don't understand why they always make that mistake. When they go to Enduro gearing, they simply raise 4th and 5th and keep 1st and 2nd the same as MX, which is too high for single track. I guess it does allow you to put a larger secondary drive ratio and still keep some higher speed in the higher gears.

    Not eating sh!t when I clip trees is basically my only motivation for hand guards ;-)
    I've tried running brush guards only for a winter riding season, 1 tree clip of the front brake later it was time for proper hand guards. Being thrown into rocky single trail on a very steep hill was not so fun!
    I'm in awe of the pro hard enduro guys who all race w/o guards.

    Kyle was talking about the YZ being light, that reminded me of a magazine article I was reading, and even though it is a straight motocross bike and not a woods bike, the '17 model KTM 250SX weighs like 211 pounds dry! Talk about feeling like a mountain bike! That being said, I think I'd like the YZ 250X better, but I haven't ridden either one so...

  • @AnimalMother85

    Great review. I also think the first gear is too tall and I'm kind of surprised that they didn't put a stator in this bike that can support a head light. I tend to think that if they made this a blue KTM (or a blue-er husky) - light, shorter first gear, electric start, and with a 300 option, a lot of guys would buy it just out of brand loyalty. I've seen them at the dealer and they are quite sharp.
    I know you're buying these out of pocket, but have you ever considered reviews on the 2017 Beta and Gas Gas 300s?

    Thanks for taking the time and doing what you do and reviewing this bike. You rock. The bike on the other hand is just a total waste of money. 5 gears, no push start, poor suspension for off road , the 2 stroke when compared to beta, KTM, Sherco,TM and Gasgas is still back in the early 2000's with technology. Maybe for the track it will be ok, but AMA wont let 2 strokes in supercross so why waste your money. Just my 2 cents. 300 for the single track all day, too bad Yamaha dosent make a 300 .

    • @Ender1Chicken
      @Ender1Chicken 7 років тому

      Chris Luton the bikes a 5 speed because 6 speed is good for the road and this bike is built for off-road racing, electric start yeah that's pretty shit, suspension is the best on the market if you're saying their shit because they are stiff then you can make it softer, yamaha doesn't make 300's but you can make it a 300 Yamaha sells 300 kits

    I ride a 2000 yz250 with a flywheel weight and a gnarly pipe. I ride everything and hardly ever put it into 1st gear even on the big bolder bashing trails. Just too torquey, wants to spin out or flip out. People are always amazed when I tell them I've been riding in 2nd gear up gnarly stuff. Stock secondary too. I'm surprised you felt 1st might be too short. Maybe you weight a bit more than me. 158lbs. Be interesting to see how the bike pans out for you. Glad you got it because I'm a Yamaha die hard and glad to see them at least doing something different.

      I had a 99 200exc and loved it. By brother has a 00 KDX200 and its a fun bike for sure. I rode it quite a bit and cant say anything bad about it except that it lacks the hydraulic clutch on the KTM's. We have lots of woods around me and it felt light, has decent (not like my 300xc) low end but liked to be a little higher in the RPM to be happy. First gear was super low, almost xr250 low so keeping the RPM up wasnt a problem. It also has a shorter wheel base which makes them turning machines. Overall, if I found a mint one laying around, I would buy it for those tight woods days but my wife would think 4 dirt bikes in the garage is a little excessive....

    Great video! I am so glad you are reviewing the 250x. Hey I have been wanting to buy a go pro, what would you recommend? 4 silver or session. Maybe you should do a video on those. Keep up the great videos. Thanks

    I like the suspension of the yzx but think I'd benefit from the "tractor pull" of the 300xc, only KTM went and made engine changes so not sure if I want to find the "bugs" for them

    I had a ktm 250xc for the past six years, rode and rm250 prior to that. The suspension will always be the crutch of ktm, talked to too many with near death experiences on a ktm, including myself, most likely due to the wp suspension. How many times has ktm changed their suspension in the past ten years? Probably ten times....The showa suspension on my rm from 11 years ago was far superior to even the ktm crap today. The Yamaha is even a step further with the sss. Ktm can have credit for pushing the development envelope and keeping 2 strokes alive but I'm glad Yamaha has given us a choice other than orange with better suspension. I stoked with my 16 yz250x, hopefully they keep developing it. If you've never tried a 05-08 rm 250 they are linked to your brain for turning, the yz not so much but more stable.

      Either one is very good. If you like to go slow, and ride technical terrain, I'd steer you toward the 300. If you love to push it and ride on the pipe, this 250X is pretty darn good. You just have to ride the YZ250X harder since it doesn't have the low end torque of the 300s.

    I recently downsized from a 300 xcw to a 2016 200 xcw. I would love to see a comparison between the KTM 200 xcw and the 250 four strokes you have been testing. Maybe even between the 200 xcw and the YZ250X and see how they compare. The 200 XCW's are popular in Colorado because of the single track but leaves me wanting a little more power at times and maybe the 250 (xc or yz) is the solution. And maybe I am just delusional.

      What do you think? This or the 300rr? I currently have a '15 XT and it needs to go because of the type of riding I do. I am really stuck between this and the 300rr, the only reason I am more towards the 300rr is that like my XT, it can also be street legal very easily.

    • @MitchVandermeer
      @MitchVandermeer 8 років тому +1

      I'd go the 300rr for almost the same price you get an fmf exhaust, electric start, oil injection, billet triple clamps, speedo, hydraulic clutch, bigger fuel tank and more with the beta

    I love KTMs and the YZ250 may seem like a 10+ year old design but it still has one of the best suspensions and engines in the industry. My only concern is that it's motocross background might make it a little firm suspension wise and too snappy especially with the punchy bottom end power YZs are known for.

    • @jridenour31
      @jridenour31 8 років тому

      The suspension is valved for offroad and the motor is smooth. That's the whole reason this bike exists.

    • @jridenour31
      @jridenour31 8 років тому

      The ktm's are based on mx bikes, too.

    • @mmholling87
      @mmholling87 8 років тому

      I'm aware that both bikes are based on their motocross counterparts. I think the YZ is a more hardcore motocross bike than the 250SX. The 2006 YZ25O was designed when 4 strokes where still some what new on scene. Now every motocross track in the country is designed for 4 strokes and even KTM designs their two strokes with this in mind. The 250SX steers with the front tire like a 4 stroke. Even the 250SX engine feels smooth compared to YZ.

    • @jridenour31
      @jridenour31 8 років тому

      Ride a yz250x. They're smooth and soft.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 років тому +1

      The suspension is a little firm so I've softened up my clickers on the forks most of the way out and it has made all the difference. It's not as punchy on the power as the KTM 250 SX bikes I've ridden. They dropped the compression on this bike to make the power deliver smoother and they did a brilliant job on that aspect.
