The beauty of the YZ250 2t is the bike really hasn't changed in 15 years, the motor goes back to last century. That means that parts, both stock and aftermarket, are cheap and plentiful. They are an easy platform to mod to fit your needs. I had 2005 and later an 2006, I paid $2500 for the 2005 in 2008, and $2800 for the 2006 in 2009 with 40 hours on it. Nobody wanted a 2t back then unless it was a KTM. I bought all used, an oversize tank, FMF woods pipe and quite spark arrestor, WR 18" wheel, skid plates, kickstand, rekluse... Everything switched over from the 05 to the 06 when I ungraded for the SSS forks. I put the cleanest plastics I had on the 2005 and sold it for what i paid for the 2006. I had to sell the 2006 in 2012 for health reason. I put it back to stock, and sold it for $3500 with a 100 more hours on it. I easily sold all my used woods parts and made a profit on most of it.
The Honda XR's and Kawasaki KDX's are the only other bikes that went so long basically unchanged. Neither one of those is the weapon the YZ250 is.
I recently started looking again for another used YZ or YZx now, and it looks like people have figured out that 2t's are fast, cheaper to run and just more fun. People are asking $3000-5000 for 15 year old YZ's. It's crazy, but I guess the secrets out.

Awesome bike. I am getting back into riding this fall after being out of it for a few years and riding four stroke MX bikes. Your videos have really helped me on trying to decide what bike I wanna get back on and I'm gonna take a plunge and try out a 2 smoker! The yz250x fits my budget and seems like a great bike for what I wanna do. Keep making the videos and thanks for all the info. Really has helped me.

It took me a while to find my favorite bike for the single track riding that I do as well. I ended up landing on a yz250f, added a Recluse clutch, 290 big bore and worked on the suspension and was good to go. Absolutely a great woods machine with plenty of power to get the front wheel up and over obstacles and super nimble to carry plenty of speed around the corners. That was coming off of 300 then 250 KTM 2 strokes. loved those as well but they just do not feel as planted to me. Great interview and nice modification to that 250.

Good interview. As soon as the X came out, my KTM 200 was for sale. The KTM was a great bike . Great engine, suspension, brakes, clutch. Being a 200 I was disappointed that is handled like a larger displacement bike. The 200 always felt really big and fat and it took awhile to get used to it. The yzx is quite the opposite. It feels slim, compact and has a shorter seat height. Needless to say it is confidence inspiring. The stock yamaha clutch is beautiful. Easy pull, excellent feel without fade.I dont miss the hydraulic clutch, but it was nice to use ,I don't ride roads or desert. Deep woods riding in BritishColumbia, as ugly as it gets . The suspension was excellent right out of the box, jetting took a bit to clear up but I got it. I don't miss the bigger fuel tank but miss the electric start. it's not an issue because it starts so easily . Yamaha needs to cap the front hub bearings like the rear cause you need to buy wheel bearings in 6 packs . The bottom of the air box is wide open for more air flow but it also let's water in through deep water crossings. I've had 14 bikes since I was 18. The Yzx I can say with confidence is the best all round bike I've ever own.

@pablo gonzalez If I wanted a 300 I woulda bought one. The only thing a ktm has over the yz is the Brembo brakes and the e start. The white power suspension is NOT better than the Kayaba units. Every other manufacturer is playin catch up with Yamaha and their suspension.

Also, did Scott go with heavier springs in front or just rear? I resprung the back (I weigh 200), but was thinking of going up in the front by one level. - fork feels pretty good, but was wondering if going up would help it even be more plush. They actually work great once they are revalved, I just put in Race Tech gold valves which flow a lot better than the stock compression pistons do. They work great for me and I ride MX and trails. It is all about the setup.

I wouldn't lend sell or trade my 250x. I love the bike. Lectron billetron 38 makes it so crisp.

    Great interview,
Could you detail the YZ250X motor mods, gear & product used? Like carb, cilinder head, pipe etc.
    Thanks!

Enjoy your videos saw all your yz250x reviews last year when I bought mine. I do mostly technical stuff my 2017 manual say the sprocket hearing come 14/50 stock, not 52 Right?. Anyway I am going to go up to a 52. Love the bike had a 2008 CRF 450 r before the Yamaha feels so much lighter. I think it's a lot more fun to ride over the old CRF.

He said 50 tooth rear sprocket, I hear it now
Thought he said "comes with a 52 rear sprocket"

Lol, I have this bike and I broke the welds off my chain guide this weekend!! My swing arm seems to be undamaged (we'll see for sure when I get it off this week), but I was planing to just re weld those tabs. Did Scott have any issues with it after or did he do anything special to make it work better?

I added some extra support, I own a fabrication business so it's pretty easy for me. Just find a good tig welder and some scraps of aluminium. I actually used the wheel and sprocket to line everything up for me. Good luck!

Your original review convinced me to buy a 2017 yz250x as the ktms were just a bit too expensive. I came off a 2014 rmz450 that just wasnt right for me. Your review was spot on. Loved this bike. Im 170 w gear on an the suspension is amazing. All of the really tough trails i made but struggled on are so easy on this bike. At the end of rides i feel great ready for another loop not beat up and tired. I do find neutral more than i like, the gas tank is too small and i miss that 450 raw grunt on the open trails but i love my yz250x overall. Single track hill climb killer. Keep up the vids kyle they are the best ones on youtube.
