Lyrics:
This is the room, the start of it all,
No portrait so fine, only sheets on the wall,
I've seen the nights, filled with bloodsport and pain,
And the bodies obtained, the bodies obtained.
Where will it end? Where will it end?
Where will it end? Where will it end?
These are your friends from childhood, through youth,
Who goaded you on, demanded more proof,
Withdrawal pain is hard, it can do you right in,
So distorted and thin, distorted and thin.
Where will it end? Where will it end?
Where will it end? Where will it end?
This is the car at the edge of the road,
There's nothing disturbed, all the windows are closed,
I guess you were right, when we talked in the heat,
There's no room for the weak, no room for the weak.
Where will it end? Where will it end?
Where will it end? Where will it end?
This is the room, the start of it all,
Through childhood, through youth, I remember it all,
Oh, I've seen the nights filled with bloodsport and pain,
And the bodies obtained, the bodies obtained, the bodies obtained.
Where will it end? Where will it end?
Where will it end? Where will it end?
If there ever was a band that DIDN’T need videos, JD is certainly that band.
Natürlich, bien sur... But they are also that band to spark creativity with so many fascinating videos for many of its greatest songs.
absultely agreee

If you close your eyes, it’s actually quite good...

I imagine a totally different scene when I listen to this song, just a working man in his empty home with bleak white walls, or a therapist's office with someone devastated sitting on a couch in the middle of the room
I think your imagination is far closer to what Ian Curtis was living and thinking when he wrote the song.
I can imagine Hitler, Nazi, German troops and tiger tanks while listening this song.
I think something like a lone soldier alternating between walking through a frozen battlefield and his empty hometown, but I quite like your ideas. Tbh, a monkey in a clown costume doing erotic dances for 5 minutes would be better than this video
@@atypicalist6508 definitely a tank column firing off. or maybe some vietnam bomb bay footage

Can't believe this song is from 1979. These guys were ahead of their time, definitely.
....
Thats true
Certainly! But I would like to see what JD can inspire in film direction, but not this video indeed.
I was a senior in HS in 79 when I bought Unknown Pleasures. Arguably the best debut album ever.
You must give Martin Hannett his dues as well.
Peter Hook is looking well
robmanuel omg it’s the ginger hitler. My day has been made.
It's THE Rob Manuel!
😂
Day of the Lords isn't even that abstract, yet someone still imagines weird shit to it.
I've always said (well, for the last 40 years anyway) that I want this track played at my funeral...
hell yeah
I literally have a funeral song list in my will, and this is on it.
The bridge summarizes my reactions to the video: "Where will it end?"
This new Frozen movie looks a little odd...
😂😂😂😂
I never really liked Joy Division much until I saw this beautiful video and it really made me appreciate them. Really brought their music to life. . .
do I even have to acknowledge that I'm joking
How a person responds to music, is a deeply personal thing. Many, if not most of you, were exposed to this song many years after it's initial release, this is not your fault, it is just how life unfolds...
I heard this song, when I was about 20, (along with the entire Unknown Pleasures album), when it was first released. This gloomy (later to be called goth) music, touched a part of my soul, that had never been touched in this manner before, it was dark, it was introspective, it forced me to look deep inside myself and it scared me, yet I could not look away, I could not stop listening, I really felt Ian was stimulating a part of me, that had never been exposed before, I loved it, yet in some twisted way, hated how it made me feel, but I was hooked and the bottom line was.... IT MADE ME FEEL....(and it won't end)
it’s goth? i always thought it was like…post punk
@@CeilingFanE76 LOL, JD prectically invented goth, it was called GLOOM back then...
IMO it's almost like Led Zep's kids have a band and duck they are DARK. Like you thought Zep could render epic but these kids do epically dark. So dark in fact that the lead singer is romantically in love with his predetermined death and there ain't a fucking thing you can do about it. The cold world has no place for that warm comforting salvation of suicide. And it can't come soon enough.
Now that's dark.
Rest in peace, Ian.🖤
RIP Ian curtis phenomenal songwriter 🖤❤
I guess ignorance is timeless. I am 42 and this is the first time i have listened to this song....by choosing to see this video. I cannot believe how good JD were. Honestly shocked me
Their 2 albums could of been released this month and they'd still be considered fantastic
this video is so far removed from the visual language associated with the sounds of joy division, and to be honest i think its quite disrespectful to the likes of kevin cummins and peter saville and any other visual artists that were involved with the visual presentation of the band prior to the project. This video is far from celebrating the album, it undermines it.
They should given the opportunity to a young film maker/ visual artist that would have shown a level of respect and responsibility this project deserved. Creatively exploring the sonic landscape of Joy Division in a new visual way whilst still drawing influences from the likes of burroughs, the manchester landscape at the time, brutalism, the depth of ians lyrics etc... and not make something like this ....
im german and this is pure trash. 5th grader in a videoworkshop are more creative then this load of bullshit.
What about Burroughs? I'm new to this music and I like to know how that author is relevant to the lyrics. Thanks
Yeah but look. It’s a tree man.
It's okay. It's subjectivity.
@@mercurialmagictrees ian curtis admired and read of lot of burroughs - this is a good article about some of his literary influences www.theguardian.com/books/2008/may/10/popandrock.joydivision

Like I said in my comment I like it. It gives a strong Radiohead video vibe and that's a good thing in this case; artsy, crazy, simple, very well shot, technically a very well made video that doesn't explain anything and it shouldn't or else it would be corny.
You definitely got to close your eyes when you listen to this, great music.
I guess if watching these videos is the most masochist thing I'm doing then life ain't so bad after all.
It would be a better video if the guy was just a normal miserable guy going to work... “where will it end!”
That's just it! These videos are really trying too hard.
I agree. Was just thinking it could be a crappy animated little man sitting down in a room holding his head with a frown on his face. And it would be deeper and better than this nonsensical def trying too hard imagery
@@jokkemursula8731 It seems to have been a missed opportunity to make the videos the tracks never had. Plenty clues / cues for those exist.
They’re trying too hard to be artsy. if he was just in a suit or something it would have suited the song much better

Although the beginning showing Teufelsberg momentarily tricked me into thinking it would be worthy. Not.

After watching this and then watching it again but with my eyes closed, i agree that this song is beautiful and this video does it a disservice.
One of the few best bands ever. Dig it life’s a shovel

4:22...the most chilling part of the song
" Day Of The Lords " my favorite song of the British band Joy Division .
ABSURRROOOOOO ABZURDDOOO
This tune and song was about his depression he had in is life and sending warning signs to people around him.. no other band like joy division can touch their kind of music art..simply the best of all times 👍
Either I'm thinking about it too much or I'm just poetic, cuz I think I get it. Blue (sad) tinted filter on the world. Being covered, not by clothes, but by the blue. Never being free/just you. All the others stare, the world happens, and you're just.. There.
Like I said, I might just be too tired and poetic
I never seen a person call themselves poetic lmao this the most pretentious shit
Or high AF
I always imagined the song taking place in a trench warfare setting
I imagine it in the mind of a drifter after the apocalypse. The land dead and forsaken by God. Skyscrapers reduced to piles of crumbling concrete. Oceans boiled leaving only miles of salt behind. After walking for hundreds of miles he reaches the coast only to find salt. He looks up to the orange sky, stares into the unrelenting sun and utters, "Where will it end? Where will it end?"
Yeah it really sounds like the kind of slow and painful warfare of ww1. Like soldiers losing hope as months passed and death tolls racked up.
I like this with original doom goes like poetry to the sway of the shotgun
I invisioned it as the end of the world, just darkness
i imagined it as a quiet lonely rainy night in a 70s city, depressing as hell and no where to go
The regimental medical detachment of which my grandfather was a part were awarded a citation for evacuating 800 soldiers under fire in the Hürtgen Forest. They were at Nordhausen, and after the War they were assigned to Dachau. This video gets at exactly why I’ve always found this song so haunting and disturbing. I do indeed remember it all. Thank you.
This topic gives me chills and at the same time I find it beautiful. When I listen to it with my eyes closed, I imagine the Lords of the Apocalypse meeting and deliberating to put an end to all this. As if it were a musical postcard from the Apocalypse.
Such a great visual to go with this song, perfect

Thank you Tim! Still enjoying after 40 years
Every one of these videos shoud've just trailed around Stockport and Salford filming tedious things...trust me I lived there back in the 80's
These hipsters should be ashamed of what they’ve created. Just imagine what could’ve been if they’d commissioned a filmmaker from Macclesfield, Salford, Stockport etc
Meglio di sta storica band, non esiste nient'altro!!!!R.I.P. IAN CURTIC
It's insane how great jd is that they went to this gizme to Berlin where you can visibly see posters from parties like "Die Linke" that are modern now and tte band is still influential after these years
This continues if it is a magical experience, go the essence is not lost and while we continue Joy Division will not disappear
Days of youth spent reclining in smoke filled bedrooms with friends,
High as kites and climbing so far from normality.
We had hope once and dreams of conquering the world.
Time flies and we wonder where our true selves went.
Menos mal no harán Love Will Tear Us Apart
Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Interpol and Bloc Party are just a few bands that owe a debt to Ian and band. A universe unto their own.
It's just so weird having visuals when i've spent over 40 years listening to this in a blackened room!

"withdrawal pain" veut aussi dire "la douleur du sevrage", en le comprenant ainsi, les paroles peuvent prendre un autre sens. Même si Ian Curtis n'était pas connu pour sa consommation de drogue mais plutôt pour son épilepsie... J'ai connu les 2 alors... Je m'interroge. C’était tout de même un super poète, chanteur, et il reste regretté bien que peu connu par comparé à son influence. beaucoup d'artistes l'ont cité comme référence.

If you grew up watching music videos in the 80s and 90s, this looks straight up normal.
Wonder what Peter Hook makes of this? Or Bernard, or Morris?
The bloke's naturally angry because he's turned up at the 'Come-as-a-tree' fancy dress party and no one else has bothered.
It wasn't "Come as a tree". It was "Come as a tree with a Hulk Hogan haircut".

*Simple Programs* “Hats and Rabbits “
In computer hacking, the term "vampire" is used to describe a security threat that drains a system's resources or steals personal information. Here are some examples of vampire attacks:
Vampire attack
This attack drains the batteries of wireless sensors by sending the same amount of data as usual, but in a different way. For example, the attack could involve configuring sensors to connect to each other, using data that the sensors are designed to send back, or changing the list of names to make the parcel go in loops.
Be informed!
In music, a vampire is a 12-bar blues progression with power chords. These are simple programs that appear much more complex than they really are.

i’m pretty sure this is referencing adam from the bible. “this is the room...the start of it all” refers to the tree of knowledge. after he ate the apple, everything went downhill. he became aware of everything, which is represented by the people all staring at the man, and then him going into a fit of rage. then he just has the cops called on him or some shit so idk about that part but that’s just my interpretation, if there is anything to interpret.
İ listened this from a movie.actually i schoked.no shazam at that time,took some words in my mind and i found.perfect song.prefect words.un rated.

*Are Demons Real?* "Separating the Light from the Dark"
Are demons real, or do they just exist as metaphors? The answer to both questions is yes. The reason is simple. One simply asks the question, "does art imitate life or does life imitate art?" When creating a work of art or poetry or a story one first begins to ascribe a list of traits, color schemes, animals, characteristics, situations, even numbers that fit and follow the creation of one's demon or devil as a character or subject. These traits exist as real in the world, therefore demons and devils are real simply because the world and people carry these traits and characteristics. When one identifies with a character such as a Devil it is empowering those traits in oneself and changes a person as they begin to surround themselves with these aspects and it grows exponentially make these traits more real. Evil is immortal simply because one cannot take this list of traits and eliminate them from the world. They are intertwined in mankind and nature and will exist forever.
-Francis Blake
Happy2021 an anthem if ever!
when will it end ?
*A Competitive Genesis of the Mysteries*
At the end of all knowledge lies the place nobody like to go to. It is the end that justified the beginning. It completes the circle in a recurring idiocy. It is the artistic drop-off point. This is my personal example.
"Herein, lie all the mysteries, but be warned, for they are threefold!"
1. The end justifies the means.
2. The means justify themselves.
3. Two for the makers, one for the fools.
4. The more you know, the less you show.
5. Help to keep the mysteries.
6. I summon thee for wine.
7. A screen is a screen, no matter how high or low.
-Francis Blake
This is what you listen to right before you go to war
Love this song it’s spooky always thought it was about a kids doing bad stuff and maybe hurting lots of people
I liked it. I'm not German or know of things in this video that the locals do so it's all new to me. With a song this dark and a million ways to portray it in video form, this not works for me, it works well. Love the last shot. It gave me a strong sense of 'if Ian were alive this is probably what he'd be like; aggressively numbed.
