best drumming channel on UA-cam hands down
Slight disagreement... EVERYONE needs to know rhythm. But to be fair, there's a frustrated drummer in most of us! So I guess I agree with you after all?
Thanks mannnn
Love some Avishai cohen
I absolutely love how ‘the self’ lines up with the lyrics “oneself versus the self” in the chorus
I'm not here to add extra pressure for you to return, but... I miss you 😢 cheers and well wishes from Brasil
Ahhh man, I miss you guys as well.
Working on my comeback !
'Shlosre' is my music teacher's favourite. Avishai knows how to inject creativity in the rhythm department like no other
I’m a bassist and I’d like to see tuplets and poly stuff in your course! I enjoy your analysis videos of Meshuggah, but also this. Thanks for making great content!
the most mind blowing "no beat 1" song I think is Richard Spaven's "NOVA". it just feel very drunk but very mathematically exact
Love that track
Hey Yogev, wanted to leave a comment to thank you for all your help with my musical understanding, especially with metal music. It’s helped me enjoy the music I love even more, and helped me with charting some Meshuggah songs on guitar hero :)
Hope to see the series return when you are able :) also I don’t know if you’ll be coming back to the US any time soon but it’d be cool to see you perform
Yo, thank you so much !
I'm so happy this channel is helpful.
I will indeed get back to these pretty soon, I really miss doing them.
And I actually live in Boston, so if you're around Jan 27th, there's a cool show !
@@YogevGabay oh awesome! Boston’s a bit far since I’m from Ohio but if you ever come to the Midwest or if I go to the northeast I’ll definitely come see a show! Also Fractal Sextet is so good ❤️❤️
@@TheMagicCuber Ohhhhh yes that album was fire.
There's another one in the mixing process !
I almost cried the first time I heard this. I was cleaning the school classrooms in Margaret river, and I almost immediately knew that it was Karnivool I thought this is the best song I’ve ever heard. I was so proud. I was supposed to play against them in the battle of the bands back in 1997 or so.other band was gyroscope ( Sunday ) Swanbourne hotel ( we woulda lost me thinks ) 😀( our drummer was on heroin we found out that day 😢)
what in the f are you talking about?
Thanks Yogev! Great content as always
really thankful for always bringing us such interesting stuff!
I absolute love these songs! thank you for the amazing content as always🙌
OMG cant wait for yiur course !🎉🎉
Another great video. Really appreciate you sharing these songs. Opening up a whole new of drumming for me.
Thank you Yogev! 🙏🏼 I was looking for a breakdown of A Moment in Time and yours is awesome🔥
looks like this series was too
time consuming
thank you thank you ill be here all week
OMG best comment ever.
dude it's time to bring back time consuming, or at least come to play in Milano (Italy) with the fractal sextet or ron minis, \m/ pls 🙏
One of these is in the works.
I won't say which.
@@YogevGabay We miss your videos so much, can't wait for you to upload again! ❤
Terrific !
Stumbled on this channel after watching some Matt Garstka stuff.. I'm literally watching everything on this channel one after the other.. Love the content man!!!
Ohhhh thank you thank you!
@@YogevGabaywhat happened to uploads brother?
@@tristendry2089 it's been a very tough year, but I'll be back doing then soon!
@@YogevGabay Well I’m sorry to hear that and I wish you the best of luck with things 🙏 also glad you’ll be back soon!
Richard Spaven is one of my favorite drummers. So clean
We need more of Harmony-Yogev.
Harmony yogev is all fake news, don't listen to him.
I too enjoy affording things! Excellent video dude!
Thank you for a great channel. I hope your course will cover cool ways to twist and modulate 4/4 as that’s were I am 99,9 % of the time. I play drums. 🙏🏻❤️
👍awesome
So happy to see Yogev touching on Spaven's work. Spaven has been a longtime favourite of mine and some of his work (Toko specifically) deserve videos of their own! Great content as usual Yogev!
Man I love Spaven, he's one of my favorites !
we miss you you're amazing!!! ❤❤❤
oh my god ive been looking for the subdivision of this song since i heard it on avishai's "etude" from international vamp band album. I actually broke it down correctly, but was so unsure about it that it just existed in my head as a question mark! thanks, great vid...
Yes, silence is also music. I've had an idea© of adding a silent mesh pad to my kit as a tom. This would make things really interesting.
It actually sounds like a cool idea !
@@YogevGabay I'm surprised no one has done this. There's lots of opportunities for creativity there incorporating silence as an instrument.
Whata groove. 5's over 6/4 that's so cool
2:59 Me way overthinking and assuming the quavers were dotted and he was doing some funky irrational time signature stuff
The second one isn't so bad when you realise it's just a 5:4 polyrythm starting in the second position! Then beat 6 is just a cheeky hit on the second 16th ;)
Love your videos! Have you ever considered doing a video on "Between Days" by Far Caspian? Great study in hidden meter.
Insight for your full course:
I (and for sure many others) have no idea music-wise what you are discussing.. like not a bit at all! but we still watch as you are super cool, with your jokes and funny notes :) ...so this might be way
HAHAHAHAHHAH wow. Noted !
wait where did this guy go? i loved his content i hope you're ok yogev
Hi man !
Thanks for checking in.
Yeh, it's been quite a horrible year for me, but I'm getting out of it and will be back making these soon !
@@YogevGabay glad to hear from you dude, take your time to sort stuff out, we'll all be right here when you come back 😁
Jesus Alone, by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. There's also a documentary where the band is playing the song, improvising over the moods, and Nick himself complains: "there's no one [beat]"
great content man! it would be awesome to see you breaking down some Panzerballett stuff (don't know if you're familiar with them). It's a jazz metal german band, I think you'll enjoy the metric modulations and quintuplet stuff like Take Five, Some Skunk Funk, Zappa Medley from hell...
Come to think of it, how 'bout pairing Avishay Cohen and Richard Spaven in a combo? Not bad, huh?
(edit: I see in the video you already beat me to the idea. Smart man 🙂)
DEPECHE MOLD !!!!!
Hey, Yogev! Some how I've just now found your channel - and it is AWESOME! I have a couple for you - "Agrimotor" by Frederick Thordendal (can not discern ANY reliably repeating pattern throughout the entire song); and - this has bothered me my entire music-listening life - what the HELL is going on with the drum intro to "Led Boots" on the Jeff Beck studio album Wired? LOVE your channel and thank you so much for all the great info!
Yo!
Thanks for the suggestions!
I'll listen to them. Will consider these for when I go back making videos !
I would like to see how to get good at timing. You know how painful it is to rush everywhere playing guitar!
Hey, I just wanted to say that I love your videos! Trying to understand all the rhythms of a song is hard, but with your videos, even someone like me who knows nothing about music theory finds it so easy to understand everything.
Some rhythm game players will understand, but there is an artist who makes songs that are hard to understand, and I would love to see a video about it. His name is II-L.
Some well-known songs by him are Sputnik-3, Vanguard-1, and Asteroid Field of DECAPLETS if you want to check them out
Oh man thank you so much for writing this !
I love hearing from people that my videos helped is some way, it really really warms the heart.
Will listen to your suggestion !
@@YogevGabay hi, big fan from years ago, have you stopped making videos? (please say no) or are you doing something else in the time ? wish you the best man, you are one of my music teachers and always will be♥.
Yo!
Yeh sadly I haven't been making them for months now.
But I'm getting back to it pretty soon!
I'd love it if you covered some vildhjarta, I've loved the band since I was a kid basically, they just dropped another timeless banger 2 weeks ago, I think you'll love it!
Spaven took that concept a step further on "Fly" by 44th move.. it took me few months to get used to the idea that the kick is not on the "one" but on the 'and of one' after he told me so.. 😂
Nun bet you are awesome❤
Ohhh I'll definitely check it out ! Thanks !

YOU SHOULD COVER SELKIES THE ENDLESS OBSESSION BY BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME! iT HAS SO MNY METER CHANGES!
Another great example of this concept is the "chorus" sections in "Tetragrammaton" by The Mars Volta. They consist of a 9/4 guitar riff that is split into three 3-beat phrases. Each phrase begins on the & of the first beat (1, 4, and 7) and ends on the & of the third (3, 6, and 9).
The only activity you hear on the starting beats of the phrases (not including the tied notes that extend through beat 1 of the riff when it repeats) come in either a splash cymbal playing quarter notes for the first two repeats (beginning on beat 2) or drum fills that extend through beat 1 on later repeats.
The lack of importance of beat 1 (and beats 4 and 7 for that matter) makes these sections extremely disorienting.
Thanks !
Another great video!

Polies and odd meters and how they combine
Yogev! Please please please make an episode about Avishai Cohen - Dreaming - I can't decipher the the "one" in the piano beginning (easy 7/8 but what rhythm does the piano do inside it?? the one is so confusing)
I think there's more to the first track. There are some crash accents (1:13 and 3:40 in the song) that heavily imply the snare being in between beat 2 and 3. On the other hand, there's this one other crash that heavily implies the snare on beat 3 (4:38). There are sections that favor the first interpretation and ones that favor the second one. And still, both interpretations make full sense for the whole track minus those crash accents. I feel like that's intentional, and the song is meant to make sense in both ways. It's as if it is hinting at you that you should try listening to it differently and see what happens. I feel like the lyrics are hinting at this as well ("Oneself versus the self", "we're all equal").
Very interesting track, reminds me of Meshuggah's Combustion, but that one, unlike this, has a definite "correct" way of hearing it.
Hell yeh it does, did you see the video I did about it? I hope I got it right hahaha
@@YogevGabay yep, and you definitely were right when you said that the "incorrect" version sounds cooler lol

Can you react to the new album of Avishai Cohen I can't figure the time signature in ברוב האלבום
In reggae they call it the "one drop", right? I think a certain Mr Marley did a whole song about it...
אח שלי גיבור
Avishai and I have the same surname so we are probably relatives. Ask if you want an introduction.

WHERE DID YOGEV GABAY GO 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
HE SHALL RETURN !
I mean, I will return hahah
Lowkey here for the dad jokes.
This is indeed the right place.
Suggestion for another Time Consuming episode. I'm probably wrong but I'm hearing 39/16 mixed metre on this one. It starts out by going two bars of 4/4 + one bar of 7/16. Then for the solos it goes three bars of 7/16 and two bars of 9/16. But again, I'm not 100% sure about any of it.
