I really needed this today! I’m working on a plan to make a pretty huge life change and the more it feels like a real possibility, the scarier it gets. But I’m also really excited. Your story inspired me to keep going and take the risk! Whatever happens, at least I won’t regret not trying.

Thank you for sharing your journey 🙏 its very inspiring! I am from Japan, I m9ved to NYC at age 23. I fulfilled my dream in corporate career then I knew I was not completely happy just to live by myself. Then I met my husband from England in NJ. Now, we are haopiky married and ended up moving to France 🇫🇷. My new life in France is a bit challenging due to covid (and my language skill 😅) but I am ok going slow now. I enjoyed your UA-cam!!!!

    Hi Diane,
I did what you did but in 1977. I went to Europe as an exchange student, married a Swedish man and stayed in Sweden, with dual citizenship, for 38 years. I agree with your philosophy and am jealous that UA-cam and the internet didn't exist back then. I returned to the US at age 60. Reimmigration to the US has been tough. One obstacle is Social Security. I have a very small pension from Sweden, so I must work to qualify for SS and Medicare in the US. A word of advice is to plan for your retirement.

This is exactly where I am, with the question of retirement. I'm 42 with a secure job and excellent benefits in the U.S., but my boyfriend is French and we've been doing long-distance for 2 1/2 years now. I'm getting really tired of my job, and I really want to try finding one in France, but I won't be eligible for retirement health care from my current position if I retire before 55. I have some chronic health conditions that developed over the past year and a half and so now I have a pre-existing condition. I don't feel like I can risk losing my health benefits, given that I will want to live or at least spend significant time in the U.S. in the future. So right now it seems like my only safe option is to stay until I'm 55 at least.

as a citizen of the US aren't you automatically eligible for things like Medicaid and other social assistance programs like SNAP? Also isn't there some kind of program that would look at your taxed income regardless of the country it was in since you're a dual citizen?

I absolutely can relate to this. After college I became a police officer. 5 years into the job I came to think "Do I still want to be doing this when I'm 50?" The answer was "No", so I retrained as a primary school teacher .
And that's really nothing to do with how I ended up living in France...

Hi Diane, ah ah, too funny, I did it too, we must have passed each others!! Well, 20 years ago I was living in my own apartment in the center of Paris 2e (between the Louvre and the Opera house). I had friends, family, a job, a cultural life, fun... but just like you something was missing, I was bored. I wanted to experience the American way of living. I moved to Los Angeles, CA where I had friends. I just wanted to stay there for one year. After 5 months I met my husband. We now have 2 teenage kids and live in the state of New Hampshire. Just like you I did not want to get old and have regrets. It can be a big jump in your life but I highly recommend to travel and follow your dreams.

@@bestlife9925 You have to work out how you would do it. That's the small steps Diane IS talking about, planning steps if you will. So start with how you would get to know new people it in a different setting in your own country, for example maybe moving to a small community rather than to a big impersonal city or taking classes or joining clubs to meet people. Then add the additional things you need to make it happen in another country for example being proficient enough in the language to make conversation easy and understand humour. Keep your links with friends in your old country, the pandemic has taught us lots of new ways to stay in touch electronically you might have to stay up late or get up early to make it happen. Lastly If you don't already feel comfortable being alone some of the time in your current life then maybe it's not for you.

I retired 4 years ago...son out of the house, moved to Florida....it took me 3 years to decompress from my 30 years on that job....I'm 68 years old, have. a base in french, lived in Montreal in my younger years..looking forward to this new experience. I am a risk-taker and very much appreciated your narrative. If I hadn't taken risks, I would have stagnated in my home town and settled for very little. My friends and family were quite nasty and jealous when I first moved from Michigan to Texas, where I found great success and wonderful opportunities. Rather than dream about world travel, I've done it and continue to travel. I met my wonderful husband when answering another risk (a 25th high-school reunion). Moved to WA, continued my career---all good things until becoming ill and having to retire. But guess what? Retirement is a risk and an adventure and I've never been happier! Carpe diem!

I have been in that unfulfilled mindset for awhile. I am in a job is very demanding. I’m an upper level executive which means I am basically on call 24/7, checking work emails and taking work phone calls evenings and weekends, taking just two weeks of vacation a year but still being stressed while on vacation wondering what kind of crisis I will find when I get back to work after vacation. I even was in therapy for awhile, trying to figure out a way to change careers in my late 50s (which isn’t easy - ageism in the workplace does exist). And even outside work, I am just not happy with the life I live here in the US, so even the thought of retirement didn’t resonate, nor does it for my husband, who is already on early retirement in his early 60s.
Then, a lightbulb went off. Our happy place is France. We travel to France every other year for about 10 days, and when I am there, it stirs my soul. So, on a lark, I started researching retiring in France, and I was surprised to find that it was actually possible. So, I discussed it with my husband, and he was as excited about the idea as I was. So, now we are working toward that goal, and we plan to move to Brittany within 3-8 years, depending on when we feel we have built our retirement money / investments to a level that we can live a comfortable (not rich) “middle class” life in France for the rest of our lives.
Do we think life in France will be perfect or easy? No. Everyone has problems wherever they may live. We will just have a different set of challenges. The difference is, we are excited to face those challenges because it means that we are moving toward building the life we want rather than settling for the life we have. And in the meantime, we are invigorated as we plan and do what we can now toward that goal (such as improving our French).

That's a great message, Diane. And I whole-heartedly agree! I had the opposite journey to yours. After I was done with my studies in France, I decided I had decided to travel for a year or so. I knew that once I started with my job (whatever that might be), I would get stuck and it would be much harder to get this opportunity again. I was also unattached, though I had met this American guy over the summer (literally only one evening for 3 hours; we met in a small village in the middle of nowhere in Aveyron where I was visiting family for Le 14 Juillet). We corresponded a little, but we were not involved. Then I found out I could be an Au Pair in the US for a year, so I went for it. While I was in the US, we did get involved and eventually got married a couple of year later. If I hadn't decided to be an Au Pair for a year, we would never have met again, I imagine. I never planned on living the US. Yet I've been here for, well, it'll be 30 years in April 2021!
Same thing happened with my job: I would never had gotten my current job (working for an International organization in DC) if, one day when I was still in Premiere at my Lycee, I hadn't decide to switch my 3rd language from Latin (at which I was abysmal) to Portuguese. I had such an easy time learning Portuguese that I was fluent by the time I passed my baccalaureat. And it is BECAUSE I had Portuguese in my language combination that I got hired 4 years later (been working there for 26 years now). I can still see myself almost turning back instead of going to see the Portuguese teacher and asking if I could switch languages a year late. My life would have changed dramatically if I had not walked down that long corridor.
Our lives turn on a dime. You can never predict where your actions will lead to eventually. So might as well go with your gut. I like what you said: if it lights you up, it's worth your time! IF it intrigues you, it's worth your time. What's important is to be in accord with yourself. Everything else, all the difficulties will take care of themselves. If you're on the right path, things just tend to "happen" almost magically. So have confidence in your instincts and be happy, everyone!

Your story is equally as compelling. I have a daughter who is soon to graduate (US high school) and loves learning languages. She’d taken 6 years of French and is now taking Spanish. Initially she wanted to become an English as a New/Second language teacher but realized it would not allow her to learn other languages, rather teaching English to foreign speakers. She’s rethinking her University path to map a career allowing her to learn and speak other languages. I would love to know where you work. Portuguese is similar to Spanish so she could add that to her repertoire.

Great story! It is amazing how far one first step can end up taking you! I like to think of goals and life in 5 year increments - so amazing what can be accomplished in that time! I look back now and sometimes can't believe that I got all the licenses and ratings as a pilot that I actually have and took a 11 yr absence from aviation too. Still cant believe I went thru the stress of going back and now I teach corporate pilots to get their type ratings in the first business jet with a side stick - I meet crews from around the world and while it still can be stressful the money from the job has allowed us to take our family on so many adventures these past few years. My next goal is to get back in shape and learn how to fly a paramotor.

I’m in my late 50s and now I understand it’s something that you’re verbalizing to your audience, that is most people go through a period of reflection and thinking is this all there is? It’s very normal and I can see that being a bit older. But at the time when I was in my 20s working as a hospital nurse in pediatrics In Michigan I knew it wasn’t where I was supposed to be but I was frozen in indecision. I turned 25 last month, but have been feeling this way for a long time. Same situation. Right now I love my job, but I have been asking myself “is this it?” very often. I have been looking at TAPIF and researching France. Even with the horror stories from UA-camrs I feel like if I don’t leave now (while I’m young, single, and without children) then IDK when I’d go. I’ve studied abroad in Paris for a month, but I never got to experience regular life in France (with responsibilities and not in a touristy place like Paris). Thank you for this video. Really took the words out of my mouth!

You have to give up an old life (or at least parts of it) to gain new life with adventure. I was periodiically working internationally before Covd hit and will again. Thank you so much for this. I was a French major in college and spend my junior year abroad in Paris (also spent a month at a language school in Angers at the UCO, is that near you)? I made some haphazard connections and had the opportunity to stay on after my year, but I chose the stability of finishing up school and getting a job. Here I am about 15 years away from retirement and looking to head back to France (or another EU country, I hear Portugal is much easier to gain citizenship) once I do decide to retire. My French is still pretty good (Advanced level C2 at the Alliance Francaise) and I am looking forward to more of your videos!

I struggle in so many areas, with so much fear, don't know how to get unstuck...so I stay stuck in these things. I'd like to do something different, feel like I have an impact on people's lives. I'm 40 and I feel like live is going to pass me by if I keep this up.
This came at the right time. I needed to hear this. Thank you ... I don't want to go into all my personal stuff in a public comment section, but please know this really hit home, and falls in line with several things I've watched, been feeling, like I'm being prepared for something. I don't know what that something is.

I have watched a number of your videos and have never before left a comment (because I watch them on Apple TV and it is not possible, I don't think, to leave comment via Apple TV). I am 57 years old and for the last several years I have been entertaining the idea of moving to France (and spending the rest of my life in France). I have saved much money but financial "experts" forever seem to tell me that we always need more money. But, like you, I have reached a point in my career where I just had to do something that I wanted to do. I decide to retire and have already submitted my resignation with a retire date of Dec 15, 2021--only 1 month away now. Hi Jon, first thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment and sharing your story with me. I'm so happy this video hit home for you.
I absolutely understand work taking a toll on you after a while and wanting to try something else. Your attitude is perfect -- if you come for a year or 3 or 5 and want to go somewhere else or return to the US, you've at least had the experience. I'm proud of you and I think it's admirable to take chances, so good on you! How could anyone attack you for that? NO way. You can live well on way less money here.
I'm even taking my own advice here now a couple of years after making that video. My mom passed away last month as you might have seen and I know she'd want me to really LIVE and not wait for the perfect time to do something. So that's all to say, I completely understand where you're coming from.
      Thank you again ;-)

Thank you Diane, that was great as was the previous video. I love the mix of subjects and how it rounds you out as a thinking, sentient person. I lived in France many years ago, and worked and travelled and went to language classes and had a good life there (that is a life which was normal and where ideas and thoughts were resolved and I moved forward). Two things occur to me looking back, firstly I loved the way French people discuss and debate things. That was culturally new for me and it is something I have valued all my life (I am in my 60's)and it is something I like to hear you doing. Secondly I found the meaning of 'travel broadens the mind' - which I believe means we become adult if we want to do so, we become thinking and empathetic and clear about ourselves and change. That is such a gift as it by-passes immature behaviours we may have had despite our age in years. So now, when I am at an age where many men and women are bewildered by retirement and world changes I have a tool box full of useful ideas and changes which lets me survive positively. I feel that you are also resourceful and tolerant of change and growth which leads me to like your channel a lot. Merci.

Good Evening Diane. Happy New Year greetings to you and Tom. Your story is fascinating and I am so happy you listened to your gut rumblings to move out of the life you were living and find a new space , a new life. It takes a great deal of courage to break up the status quo and a sure thing, like a job and friends and things to reach out for something more that is not so safe and secure, and predictable. I am certain many friends and family said Whoa! What are you doing? You’ve got to be crazy! I’m very glad for you that “ You got to be crazy” and you found something new and exciting to be crazy about.
