This whole thing is like some sort of brutalist punishment- from the game to the video itself. This rambling has been brought to you by the Cancer King.
I've really noticed something because of watching Civvie play slavjank. It's got me wondering. Some of these games come from places where you can't freely express yourself openly and are much deeper than just a game.
Metal arms glitch in the system, It's a third person shooter by swinging ape studios and uses it's own custom game engine.. that I cant find any information on. You play as a small robot that is in fact a killing machine. The hardest difficulty is also the funnest, not overly unfair, just honest. It forces you to use all your tools strategically to make it through. Truly a hidden gem of a game.
Having seen the Tehsnakerer video several times, seeing this video pop up in my feed, that you were covering THIS, was the most hype I’ve felt in a long while.
Game development in early 2000's Russia was bizarre, with it's absolutely ridiculous lows and highs. People started to jump into a new world of ever-growing video games industry, new universities with video games studying and education, dozens of new developers and publishers showed up with insane money to throw around, some already experienced folks decided to leave 90's void of chaotic piracy and bootlegs market for official business, big worldwide publishers took an interest in Russia and CIS video games industry and markets while their own local expos and events were hitting hard even on international levels. Unfortunately, majority of those publishers and developers ended up making a complete garbage and wasting too much money that leads to their bankruptcy, while others are still around and there's a big chance you know and love some of their indie, free to play games or AA-AAA games they made together with some well known brands around the world.
2008 usa crisis killed the whole industry. not just CIS, europe, bharat, zhongguo, middle east all felt it you can see before and after, we had great games, and there's only lootboxes indie garbage and mobile trash afterwards
Also, the best game developers in the Soviet Union were actually Ukranian. RIP Action Forms, got their one notable hit series basically bought out from them before they even really had a chance to go anywhere with it and got slowly bled out in the aughts.
Funny thing about this game's insane amount of lore: It's actually a sequel to Homeplanet - a 2003 space-sim from the same developer, though that game takes place in 369 (you play as a Troyden cadet-pilot during the mentioned exile and fight for clan's survival while trying to find a new home, hence the name of the game) so I guess Neuro is technically a prequel. In fact the whole "pre-history" from the manual is actually introductory text-crawl from Homeplanet almost word for word except for the last added paragraph. The story of development of these games is a fun one too: they originally started working on Neuro back in 2001 (maybe earlier? Articles about Neuro being worked on prior to Homeplanet mention 2002, but archive of dev's site has an announcement of Homeplanet development in November 2001 with no mention of Neuro at that time), but at some point it turned out that one of their developers Oleg Petrov made a space-sim engine, so they decided to make that first.
22:41 The voice actor singing the line had me rolling on the floor in hysterics for half an hour! There's no way the English Dub wasn't bad on purpose. you can't convince me.
jimmy is the best. he's the archetypal template for how to troll edge lords; be brazenly naive and outspokenly wholesome. craig is a middle schooler's idea of a "badass" cop.
14:30 A Russian friend once said to me "In any Russian work of fiction either the author, the character(s), or the reader suffers. A great work of Russian fiction all three suffer."
I love how every time there's a new plot development in the civvie metaverse his reaction to it falls somewhere between bland indifference and naked contempt.
@@marceelino I never understood that take. Sure, the new ones aren't good but the original 3 are pretty solid. Never heard a good argument against those 3.

I've been trying, trying so hard, and failing, failing so completely, to make it through this video without being staggeringly, totally disabled by laughter. For more than two weeks! Still haven't made it through the whole thing. Civvie, you've created a modern Slavjank review classic. A new bar has been set, and will be the basis for all recommendations I make on things my friends should watch.
The funny thing is that Disco Elysium is fundamentally exactly the same as Neuro and Kreed, but the author made the right call to turn his flop scifi novel into a cRPG instead of a shooter.
I was shocked to hear this game is russian. I am russian, i've seen some all-time bad first person shooters (Kreed, Antikiller, Paragraph 77, Nevskiy Titbit, "Cleaner" (Chistiltchick), fucking Gulmen), but THIS 1 i've never heard about. Few cool ideas but horrible execution. Now i hope Civvie will play Psy Ops. 3rd person shooter with all of these psychic powers done well.
Watching the gunplay in this game reminds me of playing old laser tag systems where you only get one shot every 2 seconds and the sensors don't register hits reliably so it devolves into shooting and trying to dodge the other guy while you wait to get your next shot. 😆
The Slavjank is strong with this one. I've seen enough games with a protagonist being in over his head, but this might be the first time where you play a re- ... a special persion that doesn't understand anything.
In the first Metro book Artyom is basically like Jimmy here. Weak, fumbling through the metro, being helped by others and dumb luck (possibly the Dark Ones). Not saying that the book is bad or anything, just that I don't think that kind of character would work in a video-game environment. Jimmy here proves it.
The book (Metro 2033) is a fucking trashfire. I could see it even as a then-middle schooler who routinely devoured 300-350 pages of garbage sci-fi and fantasy *per day* almost every day. I can not comprehend how did it get as popular as it did.
@@mazanakaUA I'm not as read as you, so I guess that could be a factor for many others as well. I was curious because of the games, so I only read the first one. I would also argue that it can't be a trash fire if it spread as much as it did, there's obviously some good parts to it.
26:30 I love that this simpsons joke popped up right as I was thinking "you know the last random stranger Jimmy met who talked to him like this had sex with him by the end of the conversation"
If was great - even HD (heck and dam nation) had nice DLCs but most of the games (not made by original team) STINKS like good lord what is this unbalanced mess and mods - a bunch and all of them unbalanced hardknorr challenges
I think in some video (I really don't remember which one, sorry) he said that he would've done it, but the gameplay loop is somewhat repetitive throughout the entire game, which doesn't mean that the game's bad, it's just that there wouldn't be much to really talk about, aside from a couple of words about levels, objectives and enemies. I think if he decides to review all Painkiller games, then there might be decent enough material for a full video. Shame that, from what I've heard, other Painkiller games, aside from the 1st one, aren't as great or even good

This is some stupid cult shit
Why King got Cancer? Is he unhealthy?
I've really noticed something because of watching Civvie play slavjank. It's got me wondering. Some of these games come from places where you can't freely express yourself openly and are much deeper than just a game.
Oh boy, I'm probably one of the five people who wanted Civvie to play this.
I make two. I wonder where the other three are?
Metal arms glitch in the system, It's a third person shooter by swinging ape studios and uses it's own custom game engine.. that I cant find any information on. You play as a small robot that is in fact a killing machine. The hardest difficulty is also the funnest, not overly unfair, just honest. It forces you to use all your tools strategically to make it through. Truly a hidden gem of a game.
Wish that game gets a multiplatform rerelease.
@@michaelandreipalon359 yeah for sure, would love to see it brought back. It would be up to blizzard unfortunately since they bought out swinging ape.
Pretty sure I had Metal Arms on Xbox or PS2
It was on all sixth gen consoles if I remember correctly. Not PC
Having seen the Tehsnakerer video several times, seeing this video pop up in my feed, that you were covering THIS, was the most hype I’ve felt in a long while.
Oh my god, I am so happy you are covering this. The video by Thesnakerer was my first exposure and this left some permanent scars on my psyche.
Thanks for giving this game a faaaaaair trial
So that early 2000 period could be seen as a learning experience which some people came out of OK whilst others didn't.
2008 usa crisis killed the whole industry.
not just CIS, europe, bharat, zhongguo, middle east all felt it
you can see before and after, we had great games, and there's only lootboxes indie garbage and mobile trash afterwards
Also, the best game developers in the Soviet Union were actually Ukranian.
RIP Action Forms, got their one notable hit series basically bought out from them before they even really had a chance to go anywhere with it and got slowly bled out in the aughts.
@@TheShinyFeraligatr

@@TheShinyFeraligatr Highly unlikely. Most of them lived in Moscow, where all the computers were. Action Forms is not a Soviet company.
It's sounds like Russians that are being given phonetic readings
... and 5 channel surround lobotomies
Yeah, that was my thought. It sounds like English as written in Cyrillic @@Killercreek
jimmy is the best. he's the archetypal template for how to troll edge lords; be brazenly naive and outspokenly wholesome. craig is a middle schooler's idea of a "badass" cop.
A game that really makes you happy that Gianni exist
gianni stinks like all internet meme VAs
The walking sound from this game is also used in MOH:Frontline. That sound is burned into my memory.
I think the gun/ammo pickup noise is in Timesplitters, as well. Stock libraries really got around.
Command & Conquer: Renegade when CV-11
Civvie's too scared to do that one /s
Is Renegade X any better?

A Russian friend once said to me
"In any Russian work of fiction either the author, the character(s), or the reader suffers. A great work of Russian fiction all three suffer."
BTW, Homeplanet is a good cosmosim with emphasis on newtonian physics and realistic spacecraft flight model. It also have some great music.
that's pretty good one
Bsically doesnt work on modern systems.
So glad you shouted out Snek! This was a great companion piece to his video!
Get the hubardium civvie
"goddamnit" -arnie
I love how every time there's a new plot development in the civvie metaverse his reaction to it falls somewhere between bland indifference and naked contempt.
Civvie will play literally any FPS other than Halo
Halo is crap
@@marceelino I never understood that take. Sure, the new ones aren't good but the original 3 are pretty solid. Never heard a good argument against those 3.
@@antnuh765Don't forget ODST and Reach. Wars too, maybe.
@@michaelandreipalon359 I like all of them except for 4 if I'm being honest. ODST is one of the best ones they did imo.
hey
i'm pretty sure he'll play halo before phantom fury
I think the funniest part is when that airship steered to the left, trying to act like it lost power crashing it self, when it literally looks like the driver is the one who killed himself!
Oh good, Civvie has blessed the world with another video of glorious Slavjank. My Monday is saved.
3:40 Yay Tehsnakerer mention. You guys are both criminally underrated when it comes to reviewing/showing off some of the less ubiquitous game titles.
EDIT: 3:33 You're a real one for plugging him. 🥰
TehSnakerer smiles upon you. His video is incredible if anyone wants more indepth Neuro-pilled, and no disrespect to CV-11 but 🐍 pengame is incredible. Stoked to watch this!
EDIT²: If you don't like long videos, give him a chance, but if you just ain't got the time or attention span.. that saddens me but I'd understand.
This game has been stuck deeply within my mind since I originally watched the TehSnakerer video. So happy CV-11 covered this jankfest too.
Tehsnakerer has achieved total video essay dominations
please explain the word "stoked" to non Brits, thanks, as it's not present in the dictionary
I was just wondering why this game title was familiar to me. TehSnakerer rules.
@@Zontar82 Excited
I love how all these games are so much more ambitious than their budgets or skills could ever allow. And I don't mean that as an insult.
I think we have discovered the new greatest video game voice acting
I've been trying, trying so hard, and failing, failing so completely, to make it through this video without being staggeringly, totally disabled by laughter.
For more than two weeks!
Still haven't made it through the whole thing.
Civvie, you've created a modern Slavjank review classic. A new bar has been set, and will be the basis for all recommendations I make on things my friends should watch.
Oh neat, they got the guy who voiced Oskar Kokoschka from 'Hey Arnold!' to voice the Mc!
Shirley, you can't be serious.
@@michaelandreipalon359I AM serious and don't call me "Shirley."
Jimmy is basically Niko Bellic from GTA4 but voiced by Tommy Wiseau.
Haha what a story Roman
You are tearing me apart Kate!
That is certainly one of the voice acting of all time
The funny thing is that Disco Elysium is fundamentally exactly the same as Neuro and Kreed, but the author made the right call to turn his flop scifi novel into a cRPG instead of a shooter.
A tehsnakerer shoutout? Based. That guy makes some amazing stuff.
For sure. Love the "playing" series.
24:10: not objectives, Civvie. Objecives.
It's like I'm watching an episode of dethklok with those accents.
Cant wait to see Jimmy pop up in future videos, Certified Slav Classic.
Voiceover dude sounds like Oskar from Hey Arnold. No youuuu take the moneyyyyy

Always nice to see a content offering from CV-11 first thing in the morning
It's the Tehsnakerer and Civvie crossover that I didn't know I needed.
Right?
Funny british snake man prepared me for this one. Let's go!
Eyyy a tehsnakerer fan!
Can't wait to see how Civvie manages the social soft lock with Warden Avatar, my guess is Russian voice acting.
Nice pfp. Love that album.
The Slavjank is strong with this one. I've seen enough games with a protagonist being in over his head, but this might be the first time where you play a re- ... a special persion that doesn't understand anything.
"Where's Legacy Of Rust Civvie!"
He's an honest officer of the raw.
I'M AN HONEST CIVVIE 11 SUBSCRIBER OF THE LAW
In the first Metro book Artyom is basically like Jimmy here. Weak, fumbling through the metro, being helped by others and dumb luck (possibly the Dark Ones). Not saying that the book is bad or anything, just that I don't think that kind of character would work in a video-game environment.
Jimmy here proves it.
You should watch the Tehsnakerer video on this game, it might change your mind on that stance.
@@cjgray8825 Really? Jimmy is somehow different in that video?
@@Jack_Slate No, but Tehsnakerer might recontextualize your opinion on bumbling idiot protagonists
When Civvie uploads it's an experience that tops Christmas morning
One of these days the video should just open with a Civvie jumpscare at max blown out volume
I'm surprised that hasn't happened, yet. It would have been very fitting for the Postal III video with those random jumpscares in the game.
26:30 I love that this simpsons joke popped up right as I was thinking "you know the last random stranger Jimmy met who talked to him like this had sex with him by the end of the conversation"
Pro painkiller when civvie. I refer to it as polish doom 😂
man I miss painkiller so much
If was great - even HD (heck and dam nation) had nice DLCs
but most of the games (not made by original team) STINKS like good lord what is this unbalanced mess
and mods - a bunch and all of them unbalanced hardknorr challenges
I think in some video (I really don't remember which one, sorry) he said that he would've done it, but the gameplay loop is somewhat repetitive throughout the entire game, which doesn't mean that the game's bad, it's just that there wouldn't be much to really talk about, aside from a couple of words about levels, objectives and enemies.
I think if he decides to review all Painkiller games, then there might be decent enough material for a full video. Shame that, from what I've heard, other Painkiller games, aside from the 1st one, aren't as great or even good
I'd say it's closer to Polish Serious Sam
He could do Bulletstorm. It'll be a ride.
“Tehsnakerer” is another very
underrated gaming channel, That puts out content in a similar vein to Civvie.
Which Id describe as; Long Form(1 to 3+ hours long) highly edited & fully narrated lets-play styled (start to finish)play-through reviews.
He plays lots of obscurely interesting, highly Janky 1st/3rd-person type games of various Genre.
Ive been subscribed and watching his channel for many years, & find myself routinely returning to catchup on any new content being released.
Him & his channel definitely need more love than he gets.
