  • I found this coffee table for $20 at a thrift store! I wasn't digging the Golden Oak look so I changed it to a more warm, darker brown finish. You can do this on a budget with any furniture for your own home or to sell for a profit!

I'm so glad you decided to refinish this coffee table. I had the same table with matching end tables in the 1980's-1990's. I'm not sure what happened to the other 2 pieces, but I still have one table in my garage. I've been nervous about jumping into flipping furniture, but I always say my first project will be this table. Thank you so much Lauren for the step by step instructions. It was all very clear except for how you taped up the herringbone top of the table. Could you explain how you taped up the herringbone section?

Hi generally don’t comment much on posts, but I really admire and believe you do an awesome awesome job and you’re a great teacher! I just did my first desk for my daughter and it took a little bit of learning, but it is a solid wood desk From Salvation Army. It came with the Haverty chair as well and they match. Paid $124 for it, but since it’s just for my own use or rather my daughters than I thought that was OK. But you’re right the prices have gone up at these places, which is really crazy.

The streaking happened because you are using a water-based stain. If you ever do one again use a pre-stain conditioner and then use a penetrating stain. Trust me.

@@beebop4333 preconditioner does work on new wood or recently sanded wood. I've been doing this for 20 plus years. If you're using a gel stain all it does is sit on top of the wood. As I mentioned pre-stain conditioner is for using a penetrating stain.

I have a massive 1980-90s pier wall unit bedroom set in the same color as your coffee table. It is very sturdy and in great condition and will serve us for another 20 years. I don't necessarily want to get rid of the dressers but the wall unit with mirrors and that orange color just drive me nuts. We are also in the middle of a major master suite expansion/remodel, so every saved penny counts. Tried looking up this furniture and found out that a similar set on an Amish furniture website is still going for close to $7,000 (!!). My plan is to separate the pillars, get rid of mirrors and replace them with a new headboard. Not sure what I want to do for nightstands if I cut these pillars in half (they are made of two units-- cabinet with 2 doors on the top and a cabinet with 2 drawers on the bottom with an open shelf in between them). Not sure if I am explaining it well. This particular set has rounded tops and grooves on each drawer. I am terrified of how much sanding there will be for a complete novice. I think I will ask my hubby to build bases for all the pieces to raise them up (they are literally sitting on the floor). I know that this is very ambitious for a first-time project of this kind. Your tutorial at least gave me some ideas what to do and I love the finished color.
