Took me a week to get through his MATN response to fallout 3 lmao
I think there is a bizzare nuance to the idea of a "master piece" that it *has* to be flawless. A passion filled but mass appealing work that may have some scuffs is still beautiful. Masterpieces that are household names aren't objective masterpieces bereft of flaws let alone unanimous moving subjective works.
The funniest thing for me about the "lacking skeleton" in the Joker fight is that when I first played it, me and my brother both noticed it. "Huh, that's weird..." We both commented, but both decided to ourselves that it was due to an oversight. "Guess they didn't expect us to use detective vision in this part?"
One of the most satisfying feelings for me in all of gaming is thinking that you've broken the system and then finding out that the devil's accounted for this and had the game World actually respond to it
I just cracked the biggest smile seeing this video in my sub box. Unfortunately I’m currently isolating due to covid, and I’m feeling incredibly rough. But, to have a three hour video from one of favourite content creators, featuring one of my favourite games? It’d be an understatement to say my mood just improved drastically. I can’t wait to watch this!
1:33:19 The player walks up to a robot slumped over to the ground, looks above it to see that its lying infront of a store labeled "drug store" to which they zoom into the word "drug" and then look back down to shake their head at the robot. a brilliant visual comedy in less than 15 seconds that doesn't even get mentioned once in the 3 hour runtime of the video. Bravo.
This video felt like it was made for me. I probably played Arkham city way too many times. Last year I tried to 100% my save file. This involves doing the Riddler challenges not only in the campaign but also in the challenge mode. This goal of getting 100% made me learn the game inside and out. I discovered so many tiny details while playing the same battle arenas and stealth rooms over and over again. From 4 separate character perspectives. seeing this video bring up each individual detail this game has to offer made me glad that I wasn't the only one who is obsess with this game's world and mechanics.
Nobody on this platform is doing it like white light. I feel like my IQ grows with every video. So well written, so proficiently edited. A guy who is so passionate about video games and is able to articulate his views to perfection in feature-length videos month by month. Absolute pro. Bravo
1:07:45 One additional thing about the armored thugs. They're actually useful not just with the REC to knock down, but as a combo sponge. For other enemies, a full beatdown gives you maybe 3-5 hits to your combo, but when done on an armored one, each hit gives a combo point, resulting in somewhere around 20. That's 4 takedowns. This, alongside the REC combination makes me think that their purpose isn't to kill quickly, but to keep alive so that you can take out the others more effectively. Much like the Riddler informants, their purpose is to _not_ be killed early
There’s also the fact that they can pick up weapons off the floor like any other goon. An armoured knife man or stun baton boi can be a real pain in the ass.
@@knightofberenike9633 Armoured thugs can pick up bats (I think) and knives, but not stun batons. Stun batons are beaten by evading then striking (there are other ways but this is the most direct), and that doesn't work on armoured thugs. Similarly, they can't pick up shields because aerial attacks don't work on them either.
I just wanna say, your writing is downright poetic, and I say that without a hint of exaggeration. And what is even more amazing is that it's poetic without sacrificing a bit of substance. You make analysis beutiful without making it shallow.
@Mister Majestic I mean... it's true though? if it's so unimpressive, then why haven't you made something better? that's like never playing an instrument in your life and saying someone is bad at playing an instrument lmao and yeah, i'm still waiting.
Arkham City was one of the games I got with my Christmas Xbox 360 in 2011/2012. It wedded me so closely to the characters and fantasy of batman, it sticks with me to this day
@@raidengoodman8754 Well, it's quite difficult to compare a video game and a show. Gotham's riddler is way more developped, but I find it less..."comic book" than this one. It's not a compliment nor a bad thing, both are amazing
Wally Wingert knocks it out of the park, and just portrays so well the hubris that Riddler has coupled with the pathological need to be the smartest person in the world.
2:42:21 There's some serious hypocrisy in Ra's saying 'I don't give second chances' when he's an immortal who is literally standing in Wonder Tower, part of his greatest failure, an attempt to purge Gotham's criminals. Which happened again with Arkham City.
That’s the reason Ra’s is a villain. He could use his powers for serious good, he could influence the world in a more positive way. But he is so narcissistic he believes that his morality is the only true one.
You are a masterclass of wordplay, my friend. A lot of game analysis channels are serious and deadpan, but you are excellent at putting in puns, humor, real-world revelancy, and just are generally genuinely entertaining so a 7+ hour video on a game that i may not have personally enjoyed is enthalling and by the end, i wonder how it went by so quick
I really appreciate your writing. You're a true master of clever quips and smooth Segways. There's a rhythm to your essays and your ability to maintain that rhythm for several hours worth of review/critique is truly commendable.
looking back on your old vids on stuff like spider-man ps4, you've really changed as a content creator. I'm constantly learning deeper and intricate stuff about games I never would've payed attention for, thanks to your vids. cheers mate
Been playing this game for over 10 years now, and I had never even thought or was able to comprehend the deeper elements and themes that this game has.. even tho I’ve played it for hundreds of hours. This masterclass of a video was able to elevate a top 5 video game favorite of mine, into another stratosphere with the deep and thoughtful insights. Whitelight, you truly are a magician with your script and your delivery is so elegant. Very, very well done.
‘Wordless narrative’ is such a useful characteristic to fairly judge a piece of visual media that’s inferior plot wise but so enjoyable for ‘some reason’. That is the reason: storytelling via - atmosphere. That’s the answer to my “yeah, but…” when faced with a dismissive “bad plot.” Thanks for exploring the forest among the single obvious tree. Thanks for making people know why they like something; in order to know what they deserve. That’s how you build good taste.
I also felt that it is important to understand and acknowledge when a plot is back, but I still am in complete agreement with you here. There are times when a plot is just outright bad, but the overall experience is still very enjoyable, like most Godzilla movies or a dumb B-Movie like Lavalantula. A bad plot doesn't (and shouldn't) mean a bad experience.
@@TetsuoSlade "Mess" is not the way too put it. Arkham knight had a good story, it's just that people expected some side missions in city to lead up to something. It had one predictable plot twist and that's about the only real bad thing
My only disappointment is that this video wasn't longer. He didn't speak about Harley Quinn's Revenge (not that there's much to say) or most of the side missions. Could've easily had another half an hour of this masterpiece of a video
Harley Quinn's Revenge seemed forced, Kevin Conroy seemingly was told "say everything with a deeper and slower voice," it was rather all over the place. I enjoyed being able to play as Robin in a freer setting than challenge maps, but it still wasn't that good for me.
@@Theendman42 yeah I don’t think he needed to talk about the dlc or the maps but I think he could have talked a bit on hush. That’s about it though best vid he has made so far.
@@xaviorbufkin7250 yeah I feel like hush and also the way that bane's and azrael's side quest were integrated as you progress through the story deserved some talking about.

"They have yet to release a product that didn't bleed with the interesting and the sepcial" Well this aged like a glass of milk with a Suicide Squad turd in it
I don’t think people appreciate how hard it is to write a script that not only fills the 3 HOURS that this video takes up, but to keep it entertaining yet informative throughout. Teachers will make up something for an hour that tires out both student and themselves, yet this man writes a script that takes up a whole 3 hours!!!!! Of course I haven’t watched it yet, but going off from the amount I’ve binge watched his previous videos for fun, I can tell this is going to be great! Hats off to you lad, for taking on such a massive game, and giving it the time it needs in a video. I have no doubt in my mind that this will be the best video to ever take on the widely loved Arkham city from a critical point of view. Well done.
And!!!! He also has to find enough gameplay footage to sustain three hours, trying to show off the best and worst of this game while consistently keeping it fresh and entertaining. This could result in boring footage that starts to drone on, but somehow he managed to keep it consistent. Not only that, but to play games over and over again on multiple play through not for the enjoyment, but to keep others entertained is extremely time consuming, and if I were him I would get burnt out extremely fast. But he still manages to pump out hours of play time just to satisfy the script and the people watching. 3 hours is more like 100 of his own. Great dedication.
I recently tried doing a retrospective / review for fun on Arkham Asylum. Having done it myself I have immense respect for these review channels because it takes so much time and effort to construct. My video ended up being an hour and 10,000 words. Getting all the footage, recording, writing, and putting it all together took me about 2 weeks. I can only imagine how long this took him being 3x as long and with much more detail and polish.
Arkham City is a masterclass of a game. It certainly needed a truely talented creator like Whitelight to go into why it succeeds in almost every single way.
I think we, as a gaming community, lack the depth of appreciation that this type of content deserves. The script alone, with its length, depth of insight and mastery of written word, is worthy of a whole book about the game, or at least of a comparable scientific study, not just a small review article. But more than that, the accompanying video and audio presentation makes it significantly more accessible for a person used to the modern style of streaming media. It’s the passion that unites the game developers and game players. I’m glad that in its peak it can be manifested in projects like this.
@@kingsley3208 idk i think it was pretty clear, talking about how the gaming community that support arkham city should put more effort into content with depth such as this, and how it should be appreciated more, like fan-made (or official) books about the game, scientific studies (not sure how that would work?) but not just a review, and the style of this video has incredible video and audio presentation, making it very accessible towards people that are used to modern streaming. The passion that made the developers create this game also united the players, and CDE is happy that that passion at its peak can be used in projects such as this, a one hour article with editing and stuff, etc. I could be wrong so correct me if i am but that's what i gathered.
I disagree with your point on act 2, I think it was the most sympathetic part of the game. The added tension of the timer overhead really got me into the mood. And I think the game would have been objectively less rewarding without the timed busywork.
Your videos are some of my favorite on the entire internet! I love listening to these reviews while I game, and constantly find myself wondering just how much time/energy you spend on each and every one. The way you talk and use language to get your point across is just gold, like you're flexing your ability to put words to a page with every line ❤️
Great video! I never quite realized how much atmosphere mattered in this game. Also didn't know about the aerial attack on the Abramovici twins. Though there are some things you didn't mention that I thought deserved a spot in the video: -Azrael -Calendar Man -Riddler's physical challenges -Challenge mode -The City stories unlocked through the riddles Out of all these, I was really expecting a spotlight for the challenge mode, since it spins things up a little, making your overall objectives change, being achieving a high score or completing certain assigned tasks. Additionally, it also makes armored thug beatdowns actually useful, being optimal for increasing your combo quickly. Lastly, I know the video wasn't completely focused on the story, but if anyone is still confused about the whole Joker blood poisoning and stuff, I'd recommend seeing ClownPuncher139's "Does Batman Have Bad Blood?" video, it's quite a fulfilling theory.
@@Theendman42 well, that's something the theory covers. They do have different blood types, that's why batman gets progressively worse throughout the game (or the wonder city section), and taking that sip of Lazarus actually cured him permanently of that. The disease, though, was still there.
I just can't explain how clever his writing is. Yes we've all seen the X hours critique videos or the huge review X years later. But there is not a single smoother and to the point reviewer than Whitelight. I still can't understand how he is able to go from full poetic to epic chill-giving explanation to the most funny and outrageous memes while keeping a strange face and in such consistency. I didn’t expect Arkham city to be one of the best experiences I’ve ever experienced in a video game. The game is a masterpiece and I’ll always go back to it. I already 100% the game twice. This game will always hold a special place in my heart
Thank you for bringing up Sefton Hill!! First game director i was god damned obsessed with and actively searched out each interview of. Wow... Finishing this video felt like finishing Arkham City for the first time again. One of the best videos i've ever seen on my life. This Whitelight guy is truly amazing
The 5 armed guys at 24:27 can be easily defeated using the REC there is a generator beside them and when used to your advantage, they will be instantly disarmed
@@chardy8683 Would you rather want me to comment a 2000 word essay on what I took away from this 3 hour video ? I just gave an observation that I thought could add value :) .its objectively more efficient to take them out using the REC than the method used by Whitelight.
One of my favorite memories of Arkham City is the team-up with Bane against whichever of the four enemy factions in the game show up. At one point, I had enough combo meter built up to pull off a Multi-Batarang Takedown and, at that exact moment, Bane punched the floor and knocked all of the guards down. It was one of the most satisfying moments I've ever had from the three Arkham games I've played. On the topic of lesser known facts, attacking TYGER Helicopters with the REC prior to Protocol 10 will make them hostile as if Protocol 10 is in-progress.
@@lordofkings4877 Same, I instantly remember the elegance of the opinion being laid out even the jokes are so on point they make me laugh and then admire uncontrollably at the same time :D
1:39:37 Yes, we absolutely know what you mean. The thing most of my favorite games have in common is exactly this hardly definable characteristic called atmosphere. In my opinion a well designed scenery is what allows players not to get bored while seemingly nothing of importance is happening and the less time a player spends bored, the more fondly they remember a game making them more inclined ot call it a masterpiece as we see in the case of the Arkham games. Traversing the Arkham games' worlds is like a drug to me. It is sightseeing at it's finest. Truly a masterfully crafted series.
When it comes down to characters like red hood and punisher they have a lot of meaningful things that people tend to not understand. I mean one of the biggest elements that makes the red hood such a great story line is how much it actually holds a lot of truth against Batman's moral code. But that all falls apart when Jason Todd's the arkam knight in a world were jokers dead.
This was incredible. I was always engaged and even when getting very technical, I was fully invested. I've just relived a game I played so long ago with a whole new mindset. This is one of the best videos I've watched. Bravo
Heck yea this is one of my favorite games of all time!! So glad to finally see you cover it and I'm super excited to watch this. Thank you god king Whitelight. Love your vids man
I found this channel from the original prototype review being recommended to me ages ago and you keep consistently hitting the mark. Absolutely huge shoutout to those effects and cgi folks who contributed because they're godamn stunning. Can't wait to chew through this review over the coming week!
The point of so many other game's copying Arkham's systems really hits home when considering how much this industry has stagnated since then. Too many triple A games are trying to chase trends instead of making their own innovations. There isn't enough genuine experimentation going on these days for the sake of safe sales numbers. More and more importance being placed on things being at a larger scale without appreciating what games can still do when taken at much smaller, focused scales, and as a result, less passion shines through.
It's more common than you imagine, it's an interesting occurrence that happens in every single industry, someone innovates with a new trend, it works, people copy, that becomes incredibly saturated, someone innovates and the circle continues, in the gaming industry there is a few things I can put on that mold, the mascot craze, (aka: sonic, Mario, bubsy and many others), the gears of war clones, WW2 shooters, the FNAF type game, games including building and crafting because of Minecraft, making games triple A today is more expensive and time consuming than ever, people want big, and the problem is that companies are greedy, so keeping some semblance of what works is almost a given and not just copy and paste because it is popular, companies want to play it safe to maximize profits, unfortunately for every successful innovation there are multiple failed attempts and having a multi million dollar failure is not viable
My friend, I remember discovering you during the Darksiders 2 era. Seeing you come into your own like this leaves me feeling all your effort truly was worth it, even if as a creative, it sometimes doesn't. I know that feeling. But also know that you have become strong and wise, and I am very proud of you.
Arkham knight definitely had less memorable world detail and levels, however the visuals and the atmosphere felt when gliding through the rain and dive kicking a group of enemies only for them to panic because you are Batman is unmatched.
Ive seen people talk about the environmental easter eggs in that game are far more than any other game Arkham game just to add as well, i think knight is critiqued too harshly.
"And unlike my girlfriend, satisfyingly filled with white light". It took me about 2 seconds longer than it should have to get that, but that is some top shelf self-burn. Bravo.
Genuinely one of the best videos I have ever seen in my entire life. I genuinely can not wait for the next video and will replay this game immediately.
I love this game but can we talk about how funny it is that Tahlia got murdered on that theatre, supposedly being Batman's true love; But he carries joker out of there bridal style, not her? because i think that's so endlessly hilarious. Like did he just leave her body there 🤣🤣🤣

Bravo.
Arkham Knight's commentary will probably be as long as the game itself. And you still won't be able to tell whether he liked the game or not
This video felt like it was made for me.

Didn't he blame his car getting broken into on Postal 2 and "toxic masculinity"?
1:07:45 One additional thing about the armored thugs. They're actually useful not just with the REC to knock down, but as a combo sponge.
For other enemies, a full beatdown gives you maybe 3-5 hits to your combo, but when done on an armored one, each hit gives a combo point, resulting in somewhere around 20. That's 4 takedowns.
This, alongside the REC combination makes me think that their purpose isn't to kill quickly, but to keep alive so that you can take out the others more effectively. Much like the Riddler informants, their purpose is to _not_ be killed early
If you were going for high challenge scores the armored enemies were usually last alive
There’s also the fact that they can pick up weapons off the floor like any other goon. An armoured knife man or stun baton boi can be a real pain in the ass.
@@knightofberenike9633 Armoured knife dude turns himself into a free KO with the knife dodge counter

I mean Gotham had a good riddler
@@raidengoodman8754 Well, it's quite difficult to compare a video game and a show. Gotham's riddler is way more developped, but I find it less..."comic book" than this one. It's not a compliment nor a bad thing, both are amazing
Wally Wingert knocks it out of the park, and just portrays so well the hubris that Riddler has coupled with the pathological need to be the smartest person in the world.
God I loved Arkham City so much, the soundtrack occasionally hums in my head and I still remember how amazing it felt to play it
2:42:21 There's some serious hypocrisy in Ra's saying 'I don't give second chances' when he's an immortal who is literally standing in Wonder Tower, part of his greatest failure, an attempt to purge Gotham's criminals.
I completely forgot about his 7 hour review of death stranding, I might have to attempt to watch that again
Yay, more Whitelight! So glad to see more Prototype bits again
I actually heard a few Prototype 2 tracks used as background music.
That’s the answer to my “yeah, but…” when faced with a dismissive “bad plot.”
Thanks for exploring the forest among the single obvious tree.
I’d just say Asylum’s simple standalone plot where the hero takes down the villain is preferable to the mess that was Knight.
@@TetsuoSlade "Mess" is not the way too put it. Arkham knight had a good story, it's just that people expected some side missions in city to lead up to something. It had one predictable plot twist and that's about the only real bad thing
The amount of love, passion, and editing that go into these videos are outstanding. Once again incredible job.

This is probably my favorite video you've ever done so far and the wait was truly worth it, thank you for this.
Arkham City is a masterclass of a game. It certainly needed a truely talented creator like Whitelight to go into why it succeeds in almost every single way.
@Christian Stewart Yeah I agree bud. That moment was brilliant. I remember it taking me by surprise back in the day too.
Spider-man is better than any of those mid arkham games
This was incredible.
The “Master not a stronger student” is a top tier quote
I think we, as a gaming community, lack the depth of appreciation that this type of content deserves. The script alone, with its length, depth of insight and mastery of written word, is worthy of a whole book about the game, or at least of a comparable scientific study, not just a small review article. But more than that, the accompanying video and audio presentation makes it significantly more accessible for a person used to the modern style of streaming media. It’s the passion that unites the game developers and game players. I’m glad that in its peak it can be manifested in projects like this.
Like Whitelight you have said a lot here without saying anything. The prose is haphazard, your overall point unclear.

I disagree with your point on act 2, I think it was the most sympathetic part of the game. The added tension of the timer overhead really got me into the mood. And I think the game would have been objectively less rewarding without the timed busywork.
The production value on this is absolutely INSANE. Whitelight proving once again why they are one of the best channels on UA-cam.
Your videos are some of my favorite on the entire internet! I love listening to these reviews while I game, and constantly find myself wondering just how much time/energy you spend on each and every one. The way you talk and use language to get your point across is just gold, like you're flexing your ability to put words to a page with every line ❤️
The writing is fucking insane as always, WL.
I swear you make the best game commentaries hands down. Funny, educating and an absolute joy to watch. Continue like this and we will keep watching!
Great video! I never quite realized how much atmosphere mattered in this game. Also didn't know about the aerial attack on the Abramovici twins. Though there are some things you didn't mention that I thought deserved a spot in the video:
-Azrael
-Calendar Man
-Riddler's physical challenges
-Challenge mode
-The City stories unlocked through the riddles
Out of all these, I was really expecting a spotlight for the challenge mode, since it spins things up a little, making your overall objectives change, being achieving a high score or completing certain assigned tasks.
I'm more surprised they have the same blood type, ha. Joker wouldn't need to have bad blood to kill Batman pumping him full of the wrong blood type.
@@Theendman42 well, that's something the theory covers. They do have different blood types, that's why batman gets progressively worse throughout the game (or the wonder city section), and taking that sip of Lazarus actually cured him permanently of that. The disease, though, was still there.
In my limited experience of him, ClownPuncher suffers from the "defending the story by finishing it for the writers" problem"
He's done it again. The effort you put into these videos is absolutely insane.
I just can't explain how clever his writing is. Yes we've all seen the X hours critique videos or the huge review X years later. But there is not a single smoother and to the point reviewer than Whitelight.

Spiderman fans coming out of the woodwork disagree and say this combat system was inspired by Spiderman 2 from 2004.
