OOPS! Buying ART SUPPLIES During a NO BUY Year 🎨 And Why It's OK

  • I made a whole video about not allowing myself to buy new art supplies. Then I did it anyway.
The point of the low buy year is to break the habit of consumerism for dopamine (guilty), not to deprive yourself of new experiences. I signed up for two adult art classes in August, which meant I was going to need a few things from Blick.
    Items purchased:
Windsor and Newton Water Mixable Oil Paint
Windsor and Newton Water Mixable Drying Medium
    Windsor and Newton Professional Watercolor
    Arches Watercolor Paper
    ArtPop Palette Paper
Utrecht Brushes in 1" flat, 2 round, 12 round, and 2 rigger

Good luck with your courses. 🙂
    The bat is the best💖
Well, for the watercolour course. I'm having the impression that the participants expected to have a lot of money to spare
and that it's a hobby that they have to keep doing to make the huge expenses worthwhile?
I get the impression the materials list was created by someone who started in the 70s or 80s with this very old-fashioned selection of materials.
Which are reliable but are also more expensive branded products and have to be imported in the USA and are therefore extra expensive.
When you held up the Cotman pocket box set, I shuddered because this thing is my personal watercolour nightmare.😅
    The colours aren't even bad.
It just doesn't have enough mixing space for this colour selection for me and I would rather have this plus version bought with more mixing space or should just get the similar Sketchers box from Lukas Studio.
Part of the mixing area is blocked with mixtures of the two shades of yellow, red and blue because I often need a neutral version of it.
At first, I also thought that the reason was too little mixing space and wrong colour selection, the reason that you needed new colours for the course and not that it was student grade.

@@askialuna7717 the watercolor wasn’t even the expensive part. It is a six week class and that’s another reason I didn’t just use my pocket set: no mixing space. She’s handy for travel but for larger work, not so much. I got it initially just to try out watercolor in a non expensive way.

A lot of people don't like Hobby Lobby, but they have clearanced all of their Winsor Newton paints. I got 18 37ml water mixable oils for $40. I got some watercolors too.

I’ve seen brushes as much as $800. Now I get it with the handmade brushes, but for that amount they should be doing all of the painting themselves.

Art Supplies in NZ cost at least double the US price. $15 for a brush is reasonable.

      @@lynleyshort2758 oh, the one I mentioned wasn’t $15. It was $50.
