I don’t understand people who take this movie literally. Even if Night had not told us in the promos, the trailers show us that this is not going to be a serious movie! The serial killer getting off in the bathroom stall watching his chained victim, the 4,836 SWAT teams barreling down the street with more guarding the doors. The merch guy telling a perfect stranger all about the sting to catch The Butcher. Hartnett’s expressions, over the top Norman Bates. Not only does the movie have a preposterous concept and a zillion improbabilities, the dialogue is hilarious. Night said in one interview the movie is funny, playful, following the protagonist who is also the antagonist in a cat and mouse game. Who roots for a serial killer?! And Hartnett said it was really hard to walk the line between the comic and the dramatic sides of the character but he had great fun doing it. I have loved Josh Hartnett for 20+ years and this performance is as brilliant as many others with a new challenging POV. Hubs and I saw it twice in theater and bought it VOD. We love picking out the fun bits we missed the first time. We LOVE this movie!
Josh Hartnett actually did a lot of research on psychopathy for this role, and he looks like he nailed the personality. He totally gives me Dexter vibes.
He didn't want to dirty his shirt....lol The twist for me was the wife’s receipt betrayal and the open ending for a sequel. All in all, i did have a good time watching. It's not perfect but the last ten minutes saved the film for me.....✌️😶
"I had to pee SO bad at the end of this movie." I keep laughing imaging that as one of the actual review quotes that pop up throughout the trailer. I totally agree---too long. Hartnett was really good in it too!
I agree with most of what you said. You are one of the few who pointed out that the FBI could not possibly set such a trap in a crowded concert with several thousand people, which could easily result in numerous injuries and even deaths, nor would the organizers agree to risk their star of billions $ net worth and employees. Think of all the potential insurance and liability claims. While the part in the concert was already contrived, the third act as you pointed out was preposterous. By that time Lady Raven already knew him to be the killer, and she should be more than pleased that he just wanted to get out of the car (which made no sense either since she obviously would call law enforcement), but instead the film suddenly made her instead of Josh the focus of the movie and made her play sleuth, psychiatrist and rescuer all at once. I believe that was meant to promote Saleka as an actress, but that part failed miserably.
He is not “dumb” in that act, he’s unhinged! He’s already said he was sure he had been keeping his two personalities separate and now Rachel has revealed she’s figured the Butcher side out and he is destroyed. “We could have managed!”
The concert part dragged for me. But it became fun when Sham-a-thon's daughter asked to go to his house. It was STUPID, but fun. The whole movie was stupid, but I'll watch it again someday.
M Night will always bring something fresh, besides that you never know what to expect, Josh Hartnett deserves a better script. Let's bring Hartnett back to The Faculty, there are rumors of a remake/reboot, I hope they go legacy on this !
Yeah, that's a rental for me. I have a love/hate relationship with M. Night. Love his directing, usually hate his writing. But I'll rent for Hartnett's performance.
He asks her nicely to come out of the bathroom?! Noooooo! She has grabbed his phone and he loses his mind: Give me my f***ing phone! Banging on the door and shouting so loud that Rachel is screaming for him to stop. Then, after locking Rachel and the kids upstairs, he gets the key, leans up against the wall and says politely May I please have my phone back? Hilarious! Josh just kills this role!
This sounds like a great movie to watch with a friend, have some drinks and just have fun with it. I'm all for suspending my disbelief as long as I'm entertained :)
She's the main character for a later act. I can come up with reasons why that might not be good storytelling, but it's the first time we get to experience Cooper from another POV and experience how scary he is. Before that we were morbidly rooting for him to solve and escape his situation.
Ooh, this is the quickest I’ve ever caught one of your uploads 😁 I’m gonna come back and watch this when I’ve seen the movie. Haha, the first point you made was the thing that I couldn’t get past after watching the trailer. Glad it’s okay though, gonna catch it since you have a great taste in movies 👍 Hope all’s good with you
I agree the story is almost torpedoed by Saleka’s speaking role. She can’t act, and while the counteracting to Cooper is an important part of the story, she just doesn’t have the chops to pull it off. Luckily Hartnett and Pill bring the plot back up.
didn't the wife say that she already knew he was the killer and that she planted the ticket there so they can catch him? I mean that's probably why she didn't say anything or 'notice"
It would've been was easier for her to drop them off at their home and then call the police instead of being their alone with cooper 😅 also the very last seen, they got him in cuffs pm they know He killed 12 people and just attacked a police officer and they still let him pick up the bike like wtf are you doing 😂
He takes off his shirt (and carefully folds it😆 bcuz he has OCD) because he is going to chop Rachel into pieces and he doesn’t want to get blood on it. 😂 Remember, this IS ridiculous and as intentional as the rest of the movie is!
He took off his shirt because he was going to kill her. He didn't want to get blood on his shirt. This is simple logic that didn't need to be explained
@@mandysmorgueofhorrorNo, you don’t understand. I had this exact question. Like, he was in his own house. He could’ve just changed and tossed his bloody clothes. He didn’t need to strip. But M. Night was looking out for us 90’s kids I guess. So thanks Shyamalan!
I asked my daughter (my movie buddy) the same thing. She said he didn't want to get blood on his shirt because of his "drive a black car" condition. I didn't want to say it because it's spoiler-ish...but you know. I also guess he is a pro at this and took off his shirt ...but would have maybe stripped down after he ate.

The idea was based off an actual event from 1985 where they invited 100! Convicts to a game to capture them.

M. Night sacrificed the film for his daughter to give her exposure. He had something great here and love got in the way.
