Is that really Steve Vai commenting on the This Charming Man riff?? Well that's just made my day! Been playing guitar since I was about 10 years old. I was obsessed with everything Vai played when I was 14, 10 years later I'm here as a 24 year old man obsessed with everything Marr played. Two truly original and innovative guitarists. Also a big fan of Joe Satriani!
Fair play to James Dean from the Manics laughing at himself having not played it for ages and forgotten someone else's song. Most guitarist seem to have egos and can't joke like that. Now lets see Johnny Marr attempt the Archives of Pain solo or Motorcycle empitness solo, not touch it for a while then play it spot, bollock on. Good look with that. Both greats of the UK guitar scene, and we've had many. JDB is always rated highly in our magazines. He's influenced by the Steve Jones and Slash.
OctaveWar It wasn’t a competition, so no need to get angry, with the “let’s all see Johnny Marr attempt” stuff. Those songs you mentioned, weren’t on the show, so no need for Marr to try and learn or play them. Life’s can be fun at times.
he'd do them standing on his head. Marr's one of the greatest to ever touch a guitar. better than JDB, who is a very good guitarist himself but marr is on a different planet.
Bradfield and Marr are both fantastic guitarists, and to be fair This Charming Man is one of the hardest riffs to learn. Plus there's probably some Manics songs that Johnny Marr might struggle to play, like Archives Of Pain. But British music has been blessed by the presence of these two very talented men.
Idk I think this charming man is actually one of the easier smiths tracks to learn. After the intro bit and the chorus is down, which most could probably do in a few hours, it’s just the same jangly riff in the verses on repeat. The feel of it is definitely a lot harder to pull off though and very few can get the sound right even whilst playing the correct notes. Personally I’d say girl afraid is the hardest, but again obviously this is opinion so everything I’ve just said could be completely unrelatable to some which is fine:)

I would say that there's a lot of Smiths songs that are harder to learn, for the complexity and the lack of exposure of the songs (I'm saying this because Johnny has some very weird ways to play some of his riffs and it's very easy to not play those songs right).

I feel very proud of myself that I can play something the JDB himself struggles with! To be fair, some Manics guitar solos are more difficult than any Smiths songs, but it's very tricky to get the right "feel" when playing a Smiths song. Even if you hit every note perfectly it still somehow doesn't sound as good as when Johnny plays it.
Why is everyone making it out to be a ridiculously hard riff to learn? Granted, it's a spectacular riff but it's not particularly difficult, just takes some getting used to. There's more difficult Smiths songs
Early Manics stuff never sounded bland, in fact their first 3 albums are the best ones as they had the evil, depressive lyrics of Richie + the music genius of James Dean Bradfield and Sean Mooor. Its like have Robert Smith and Slash in one room writting stuff. Obviously their bigger successes were the Everthing must go and Truth album with won all the big awards and sales but the solos on Generation Terrorist and the evil on Holy Bible owned. Iconic band, wish they were English.
Both have different playing styles. JDB is very punk/metal influenced whilst Marr is more of a jangly pop type with folk influences. I'm sure Marr would struggle to play some of the Manics more intricate stuff off the top of his head, like Archives Of Pain, IfWhiteAmericaToldTheTruth or Condemned To Rock N' Roll, like Bradfield is here with This Charming Man which, to be fair, is a very difficult riff to play. Both are different types of guitarists, but equally amazing. Let's appreciate that!
Gordon Bennett... Here's the deal - James is an astonishing guitarist no matter what you might think of MSP, one of the very few who can play complex lead runs and tight rhythmical chops *while singing*. Johnny Marr is also an astonishing guitarist because he comes up with rhythm parts which a lot of self-titled "lead guitarists" can't play without a lot of practice. Vai's a shredder, and a good one (possibly one of the best) - but that stuff leaves me a bit cold.
@adds3566 I really like how hes showing respect to johnny, specially since i mean, he is steve vai. two great guitar players who have their own unique style and sound.

There's a particular feel to it (syncopations are very important in this riff), but that's about it. It's not insanely fast, the shapes are not impossible to play. So give it a go, don't be too impressed. Now, to play it as well as Marr, that's of course another thing.

Is Steve Vai actually talking about This Charming Man here, or just learning guitar and riffs in general? Really interested to know if he's a fan of Johnny.
the trick is that Marr's guitar here is tuned two frets up (as you can see when he plays the shape of G major chord it sounds A major), the riff involves a lot of open first string so that's why it sounded wrong in James' version cos he tried to play it in original tuning. in original tuning riff should be played in G major, (starting from 12th fret)
Oh, and anyone who says that Marr sounds like The Edge needs to put down their guitar and never touch it again. Absolutely ridiculous chat.

If I ever heard that in a conversation about guitarists, that would be the end of the chat.

Yep. The key to his magic was not his fretwork like with so many other guitarists, but his strumming and picking patterns.
