- John Murphy was an Irish Roman Catholic priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ferns, who is mainly remembered for his central role in the Irish Rebellion of 1798 in County Wexford,
Eluding the crown forces by passing through the Scullogue Gap, Fr John Murphy and other leaders tried to spread the rebellion across the country by marching into Kilkenny and towards the midlands. On 26 June 1798 at the Battle of Kilcumney Hill in County Carlow, their forces were tricked and defeated. Murphy and his bodyguard, James Gallagher, became separated from the main surviving group (fragments of which fought for six more years from the Killoughrim woods near Enniscorthy (James Corcoran) and from Wicklow mountains). Murphy decided to head for the safety of a friend's house in Tullow, County Carlow, when the path cleared. They were sheltered by friends and strangers - one Protestant woman, asked by searching yeomen if any strangers had passed, answered "No strangers passed here today"; when she was later questioned about why she had not said Murphy and Gallagher had not passed, she explained that they had not - because they were still in her house when she was questioned. After a few days, some yeomen captured Murphy and Gallagher in a farmyard on 2 July 1798. They were brought to Tullow later that day where they were brought before a military tribunal, charged with committing treason against the British crown, and sentenced to death. Both men were tortured in an attempt to extract more information from them. Fr Murphy was stripped, flogged, hanged, decapitated, his corpse burnt in a barrel of tar and his head impaled on a spike. This final gesture was meant to be a warning to all others who fought against the British Crown.
song • Boolavogue - Anthony K...
Diarmait Mac Murchada anglicised as Dermot MacMurrough, Dermod MacMurrough, or Dermot MacMorrogh (c. 1110 - c. 1 May 1171), was a King of Leinster in Ireland. In 1167, he was deposed by the High King of Ireland, Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair (Rory O'Connor). The grounds for the deposition were that Mac Murchada had, in 1152, abducted Derbforgaill, the wife of the king of Breifne, Tiernan O'Rourke (Irish: Tighearnán Ua Ruairc). To recover his kingdom, Mac Murchada solicited help from King Henry II of England. His issue unresolved, he gained the military support of the 2nd Earl of Pembroke (Richard de Clare, nicknamed "Strongbow"). At that time, Strongbow was in opposition to Henry II due to his support for Stephen, King of England against Henry's mother in the Anarchy. In exchange for his aid, Strongbow was promised in marriage to Mac Murchada's daughter Aoife with the right to succeed to the Kingship of Leinster. Henry II then mounted a larger second invasion in 1171 to ensure his control over Strongbow, resulting in the Norman Lordship of Ireland. Mac Murchada was later known as Diarmait na nGall (Irish for "Diarmait of the Foreigners"). He was seen in Irish history as the king that invited the first-ever wave of English settlers, who were planted by the Norman conquest. The invasion had a great deal of impact on Irish Christianity, increasing the de facto ability of the Holy See to regulate Christianity in Ireland.
Early life and family
Diarmait was born around 1110, a son of Donnchadh mac Murchada, King of Leinster and Dublin. His father's paternal grandmother, Derbforgaill, was a daughter of Donnchad, King of Munster and thus a granddaughter of Brian Boru.In 1115 his father attacked Domnall Gerrlámhach, King of Dublin, but died in the ensuing battle. The citizens of Dublin buried him with the carcass of a dog, considered to be a huge insult. He had two wives (as allowed under the Brehon laws), the first of whom, Sadhbh Ní Faeláin, was mother of a daughter named Órlaith who married Domnall Mór, King of Munster. His second wife, Mór ingen Muirchertaig, was mother of Aoife / Eva of Leinster and his youngest son Conchobar Mac Murchada. He also had two other sons, Domhnall Caomhánach mac Murchada and Énna Cennselach mac Murchada (blinded 1169). Diarmait is buried in the Cathedral graveyard of Ferns village.
King of Leinster
After the death of his older brother, Énna Mac Murchada, Diarmait unexpectedly became King of Leinster. This was opposed by the then High King of Ireland, Toirdelbach Ua Conchobair (Turlough O'Conor) who feared (rightly) that Mac Murchada would become a rival. Toirdelbach sent one of his allied kings, Tigernán Ua Ruairc (Tiernan O'Rourke) to conquer Leinster and oust the young Mac Murchada. Ua Ruairc went on a brutal campaign slaughtering the livestock of Leinster and thereby trying to starve the province's residents. Mac Murchada was ousted from his throne, but was able to regain it with the help of the Leinster clans in 1132. Afterwards followed two decades of uneasy peace between Ua Conchobair and Diarmait. In 1152 he even assisted the High King to raid the land of Ua Ruairc who had by then become a renegade.

Thanks so much Debbie, I truly appreciate it
I absolutely love your videos. You go above and beyond to show beautiful cemetaries i wouldnt see ...i live in USA...and the stories and i really love how you read the stones to us. Be blessed...❤❤❤😊😊😊
Thank you so much for this lovely comment ❤️
The father Murphy story is so interesting. I cried when I heard the song and the story. Thank you for sharing it it was really good.😊🇺🇸 I love history!
It's such a beautiful yet a very sad song
What a lovely old cemetery
The holes in the gravestones were used to stake the stone along with an iron bolt into the ground to hold it into place to stop the gravestone from moving until the ground had settled the holes were lined with lead in order to prevent the cracking of the stone once the iron bolt had rusted
Thanks Sue & GV another fascinating video 👍🏻
Brilliant information thanks
What a beautiful cemetery and a gorgeous Church. How amazing they have a Saint buried there from 632, Wow.
Very cool Joel
Beautiful!! Well kept cemetery. Another Wonderful Video!! ❤️🪦🪬🪦❤️
Glad you enjoyed it Evelyn
Wow, this video is interesting. A tombstone with holes, a 1701 tombstone, the work of J Byrnes, the leader of the 1798 rebellion, the king who brought the Brits into Ireland (I find it ironic both the king who brought them here, and the priest that tried to get them out would both be buried in the same cemetery), a peek inside that beautiful church, and the effigy of a bishop who died in 632 AD. So much in one video.😮. Thank you Sue.
Does it get any better Ben, sometimes the history finds me and not the other way around, I love that
@@SerenitySueGraveyards The biggest laugh is the Crown is NOT the King/Queen - they only get to reign with the blessing of the Pope plus Ireland, the US, Commonwealth and most of this planet is still owned and controlled by these same Mafia and their puppet governments are all working to these Mafias agenda - you will see these Mafias and their agenda being exposed in the video The Demo cracy Illusion on my channel which will also give you a hint as to why all of the names on the gravestones are in all caps after a certain date - the all caps name is NOT the name of the people in the graves as per that video - of course all that is hidden from the people. Also hidden is the fact that the symbols of the Sun and Moon and Cross etc on the graves are to do with ASTROTHEOLOGY and the ZODIAC etc. Jesus is the Sun on the Zodiac, Virgin Mary is the Moon, the 12 Disciples are the 12 Signs of the Zodiac, the Angels are the Angles of the Zodiac, the Cross is the Cross of the Zodiac Circle hence why there is usually a circle round where the Cross intersects etc etc etc. The Romans created Jesus which means FISH to represent the Age of Pisces hence why his "birth" date is EXACTLY the start of that Age and why they changed the calendar to restart from then - the people who worship Jesus are worshiping the SUN. The Christ part of his name is different as that is to do with consciousness hence why he was "crucified" at Golgotha which means skull - inside the MIND. These Mafias are always suckering the people hence why government means MIND CONTROL and they write and change history to suit their agenda.
Amazing video and what a old grave that's realy amazing I watch a lot of graveyard videos have never seen that anyone seen a grave that old
Everybody, please donate and subscribe to both Grave Visitations cemetery channel and his new channel and Serenity Sue's cemetery channel. Hitting that thumbs-up button helps also. Donations help GV and Sue make these videos we love so much. Please also share the videos with friends, etc..it really helps. Thank you for your support.
Thanks so much Kris ❤️
The holes are there to keep stone from toppling over in high wind. Common practice in olden times. Love this one
Thanks Douglas ❤️
I was just talking to Belfast on my radio! Hey y'all!!👋
So cool!
Love a new upload! Hard to wrap my mind around someone buried nearly 1400 years ago. Thanks again. 😊👍
It is Hans, remarkable really
This is another Great Video those gravestones are very old thank you and your husband for taking the time to show us
Our pleasure!
Hit the thumbs up 👍
WOW AD 632. Love it! Thanks
Our pleasure!
The two holes in Katherine Murphy’s headstone are there to prevent the headstone from falling over in strong winds.
This was a common practise a long time ago especially in areas where winds and rain are common
Wow thanks so much that makes perfect sense
Edited Nevermind a made a new comment regarding what I found out about the holes in the headstones.
Thank you!
Mary O'DanjoLey Died May 17, aged 54 years, 1780.
I had a teacher who required us to do math with Roman numerals!
It kind of stuck after that! I was glad he didn't require us to speak Latin, but some of that stuck too!
The stones with the sun and moon should also have stars, and they signify glory to God!
Thanks so much Jeffery ❤️
Thank you so much for this Sue. I know,it must take so much effort from you so we can see all these beautiful cemeteries. Stay safe 💐❤️

This graveyard has a rich history! A Saint, a priest, and a king, WOW!!! The King's grave must be the oldest grave you have documented. The graveyard looks to be in good condition, the church, or Catheral as well. Thank you very much Sue and GV, for a great walking tour.
Thanks Michael. Brilliant history in just one place
@Serenity Sue You are welcome! You are right about the " brilliant " part. I am surprised 😮 that the grave of the King was in as good condition as it was, same with the tomb of the Saint. Thank you very much again. 😊
As always, I LOVE your videos. You take me to places I can only dream of visiting, ground where my ancestors walked and lived. And that church was breath taking! Stay safe and thanks again, from Texas.
Thanks Whispers ❤️

Beautiful area, cemetery, and church! I've never seen an effigy that old before and it was in great shape!
It's almost perfect Don and considering its that old shows its well cared for
Hello Sue and GV, it never fails to stun me as to how many bodies are in some of those graves, they must be very deep indeed. The story of Fr Murphy was terrible, there were some horrific methods of execution back then. My he rest in peace. Take care my dear friends.
Thanks Barry

Hi Jay ❤️
SO SORRY to hear of what they did to Father Murphy.
It is beyond barbaric to make anyone suffer so especially a man of God. I hope that he has found eternal peace.
He was a brave man, gruesome history. May he rest in peace
Hi Serenity Sue Thank you for sharing your beautiful video. From many miles away the Auger 👍❤️
You are so welcome
Sorry I missed the premier Sue, wanted to be here, but something came up, will hopefully be here for the next one.
Thanks Becki, you were missed
I used to tend bar at the Knights of Columbus. Periodically the bartender was permitted to just up and place a free drink in front of everyone at the bar. When a surprised patron asked who bought that round the standard reply was a mythical "Father Murphy".
Wow, good ould Fr. Murphy
Very interesting graves Sue Thanks for sharing ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for bringing this history.
Our pleasure!
Another magical video absolutely amazing ❤

Its sad but inspiration in showing the graves of heros who stood up to the Brittish in rebellion in there believe in the freedom of there beautiful Ireland. Hopefully you are having a great weekend and the sun is keeping you warm and still is shinning over your shoulder.
Hi Wayne, history is history, the good, the bad. I certainly respect those who fought like fr murphy for us, not many would do what he did, knowing how he'd be killed if caught. Rain rain and more rain. Weeks of it now
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Keep dry and hopefully the sun will come shinning through again soon.😊
Watching on replay sue
Such rich history! Thanks for sharing

Yes, that's true, Thanks
What a terrible death to be quartered.
Such a sad terrible story. Thank you for sharing.
It was terrible

Great video Sue ! Thanks !
Very welcome Denise
That is an amazing cemetery! The head stone with the holes is very intriguing.
Thanks Joe ❤️
Thank you ❤ what a place!
That word is “pastoral”. I think their s’s look like f’s next to tall letters 🤷🏻♀️
Yes I think you're right I see those F shapes on stones that are an s, sometimes I understand it and sometimes I don't, I'm learning though, thanks a million
Sue, thank you for sharing that bit of Irish history. I had heard of the 1798 Rebellion, but not who led it. He truly deserved sainthood for what he suffered.
Lots of leaders in different areas, bagel Harvey was another hung drawn and quartered
RIP Father Murphy and fantastic that saint Mourge was it? Only 632 years after Christ's death. Thank you again for interesting video. Easter coming. 🐣Happy Easter!
Thanks Jackie, I am sometimes in awe of the dates on these stones and graves, such history to see
That was very interesting ! Thank you!

HI Sue , great video once again

Yes, will I ever beat that, probably not
AYE UMM BEGORAAA 632 AD WOW THAT'S THE OLDEST ONE I'VE SEEN YET AMAZING FIND YOU TWO 👌👌
Thanks Tim ❤️
Hey Sue, I wanted to add one more thing about the holes in the headstones they were used to keep them upright. Someone wrote and article about it. If you Google "Bicker Curiosities - Holey gravestones!" they explain the holes. A quote "after the stone was carefully erected, a stout wooden stake was driven into the ground behind the headstone and a bolt was passed through the wood and the hole in the stone to fix them together. The stake was designed to keep the stone upright until the ground had properly settled around it. In order that the rusting of the iron bolt didn’t cause it to expand and crack the gravestone the hole was lined with lead."
Wow, that sounds correct and it makes sense. Thanks for the information 👍
Fascinating! Thank you!
What a beautiful song, Sue ! Love it !
It is beautiful but so sad
@@SerenitySueGraveyards Yes and your and GV's Irish I understand, but not the lyrics of the song. So I searched the lyrics and played the song. Beautiful !
Good on you for doing that
@@SerenitySueGraveyards I always do. I want to understand everything, and google is very patient with me ;)
Well it's lovely you take the time, thank you and thanks to Google too 😀
What a History Lesson. Thanks Sue. That word was most likely Paftoral (PASTORAL) f/s
Thanks Hank, thats caught me out several times F/S cheers
Wonderful !
Thanks so much ❤️
hi! what a beautiful place. i am always interested in the dates, what is the oldest date on a standing headstone, mid 1700's from what i typically see. the ground stone with 1701 was amazing!! thanks for taking us along. what a great place!!
Oldest standing headstone I found was 1622
@@SerenitySueGraveyards amazing! i know with the ground covers, and then the effigies those can be much older. but once standing stones were introduced i'm always looking for how far back they go. thank you so much. 1622! wow!
Thanks sue great video once again
You are so welcome
Thanks
Thanks so much Linda, this is very much appreciated, it will go towards our next adventure.
Great information about fr Murphy pity that his final resting place is not in very good condition and should be restored and upgraded with signage
I agree John, he died for us he should have a better memorial
Thank you so much for making these video Serenity Sue. This is just fascinating and your presentation is so respectful!
You are so welcome!
SUE THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR CHANNEL. I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO VISIT IRELAND, BUT UNFORTUNATELY @ 61 & LEGALLY BLIND NOW DOESN'T LOOK LIKE I'LL MAKE IT. 😔 MY SON'S ARE MARINES WHEN THE OLDEST WAS ON HIS WAY HOME FROM AFGHANISTAN HE CALLED ME & SAID MOM YOUR NOT GOING TO BELIEVE WHERE I AM. WHEN HE TOLD ME IRELAND I WAS SO EXCITED WHEN I ASK HIM WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE HE SAID I DON'T KNOW MOM IT'S DARK. I DID GET A NECKLACE THAT I WILL WEAR TO MY GEAVE. PEACE AND LOVE TO IRELAND
Thanks for sharing that story much love to your sons, you sure did bring up heroes 💙
Its sad that these old graveyards are neglected,
authorities should take more care of them, i would like to comment also of mans inhumanity to man we are all gods children, love the history
Thanks Margaret, unfortunately I've seen it a million times. It's a shame, history being lost and forgotten
Fantastic Michael's grave carvings
Song goes for Ireland s freedom will fight or die at bouleavogue 😢🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮🇨🇮
When I hear it I feel like crying
@@SerenitySueGraveyards theres a bit of rebel in me!!!
My son and I were checking out a very old cemetery here in mystic Connecticut. 1 Stone in particular was a man who died in 1710 at the age of 98. If you do the math it's not too far off from the 14th century. (1500's).
Brilliant 👏
Hi from 🇦🇺, Have just found your channel, binge watching now, such history surrounding these cemeteries.🍺🍺🍺🍺
These stunning stained glass windows, amazing.
How old are the hymn books?
Hi Ros, I actually don't know the age of the books, unfortunately
