  • Guards hold the key. They eventually unlocked the place for me
The site was once the location of an old Celtic church founded by Saint Broc which lends its name to Donnybrook (Irish: Domhnach Broc). Later the church of St. Mary was dedicated by the Archbishop of Dublin, Archbishop John Comyn sometime between 1181 and 1212. The church was rebuilt by Archbishop William King in 1720 and by 1827, due to the size of the congregation, a replacement church was built on the corner of Anglesa Road and Simmonscourt Road and dedicated to St. Mary in 1830. The old church was demolished and the materials sold off. There is a small wall in the middle of the cemetery that is thought to be the remains of the old church.
The entrance to the cemetery was originally located to the south where the Religious Sisters of Charity are located. Today the entrance is beside the Garda station and is through an archway that was erected by the Dublin Stock Exchange in 1893 in memory of Thomas Chamney Searight.

I must say Sue I absoloutely love watching you and GV, My last name is Brennan, as Irish as it comes, i wonder where all these Brennans in my ancestry came from and as far as we can see its mainly kilkenny, however I had found so many more ancestors and 6x grandparents in other areas, I absolutely cannot get enough of the Irish accesnt and miss my grandfathers voice as it was always as close to Irish accent as I could get as we migrated to Newfoundland in early 1800's, thnk god for Newfoundland and Ireland ,,,, Erin go braugh !!!!!!!!

Hi Sue, Awesome tour of this Dublin graveyard, some of those 1700's headstones are amazing especially the chubby cheeked cherubs, different times back then with equally different societal values when it came time to bury their loved ones, some of the inscriptions are extremely explicit & personal. All the best, enjoy Dublin...💜👍👍

G’day Sue these very old cemeteries are a time capsule of history, they famins and wars ect. This one was very interesting you can see who was wealthy and who wasn’t just by the size and quality of the headstones, good to see you both take care and look after yourselves kind regards John P S just a foot note I learnt when I was in nurse training they went into medical history especially in the out back of Australia if you find a hole lot of small crosses they are usually little kids disease would wipe out a lot just from one community. We were told parents didn’t name their kids till they were no longer toddlers. Medicine and medical treatment was in its infancy.

I wouldn't hurt to bring a broom with you to sweep off the gravemarkers so they might be read easier. It's also a show of respect. Should anyone question what you are doing there, you can say that you are helping to maintain the cemetery. Also, ivy, although it looks nice, digs in and destroys anything it grows on.

Some of the inlaid stones you visited looked to glow with an otherworldly light! Perhaps it's just my perception but I thought perhaps they were inlaid with special stones!
