One of my favourite Holdsworth passages. He was a master at creating and resolving tension in solos. Another excellent lesson, thank you
Thanks man! So true -it’s an amazing line isn’t it
This guy is unreal. He can do anything.
He was such an incredible player wasn’t he
@Pete Callard Yes. He was incredible & unique but I was talking about you! You're very versatile. Read some of your lesson articles.
Thanks very much!
Thank you for this awesome lesson Pete, really appreciate it! Its really fun to play and a great insight into all the smaller parts that make these lines sound so pretty. What terrifies me (in a good way!) is how Allan would have improvised this line, it seems somehow perfect! Thanks again dude.
Thanks Sam, glad you like it! He was a genius, that's for sure
Pete, your the best! Guitar Techniques needs you back, NOW!
Tmidiman thank you, that’s very kind!
Thanks for this. It's incredibly helpful. Thankyou for taking the time to do this.
Thanks man, really glad you found it helpful
Well done! Thanks!
Thanks man!
Wow, Pete. Really. This line is devastating.
Thanks Joshua!
One of the lines that blew my head off on first listen a long time ago. Thank you for the demo Pete. Also the tension building part of the Low Levels, High Stakes solo. And basically all of Atavachron
Thanks Ben! It was Spokes & Peril Premonition from Secrets for me, & the In The Mystery solo (which I’ve also done a video on)
@@PeteCallardBoth Spokes and Peril Premonition are so underrated in my opinion. Spokes is one of my favorite Holdsworth Synthaxe songs, and the solo on Peril Premonition is mind-bending
Totally agree!
Hi Pete thanks for the kind words ! Please stay well sir ! Talk soon
Great lesson. Very clear Thanks.
Thanks Clay, much appreciated!
This is so good.
Thanks Tim!
This is awesome. I didn't know about this channel, subbed!!
congratulations for the excellent work! I subscribed and it's one of the best real guitar channels@@ !
Thanks very much, that’s kind of you to say!
Nice... you must have worked a long time on that... thank you for breaking it down.. I've been an Allan Holdsworth fan since the 80s.. I've seen him four times in Atlanta.. he is missed..
Thanks very much! Me too, he was such a genius
Woot! My favorite. Instant subscribe. 🎸😎🤙🏼
Thanks man!
@@PeteCallard Fwiw, I'd love to hear your take on the "why it works" part sometime. Cheers, Daniel
amazing!
Thanks Chris!
Great stuff as always, Pete. I've been on a Holdsworth binge after he passed and loving his work more than ever.
Please do more of these videos if you have the time.
Thanks Chris, me too - such a shame. I'll see what I can do...
so cool! get excited about learning to improvise again. it would be really cool if you might make a video about how to apply this holdsworth chromatic lines into to our music. because it's very difficult for me to embed long chromatic lines in context. Sorry but What pickup do you put in the neck position? I'm interested in changing my Strat pickup. when you play that lick is it on the neck pickup or bridge pickup? sounds like on the neck pickup so it sounds very warm and clear. Thank you very much
Thanks for your suggestion, I’ll bear it in mind. I did a video showing how to take a Holdsworth line and adapt it to work over different chords called ‘Expanding On Holdsworth: 20+ ideas from one great line’ which might help... I used the bridge pickup for this video, as it’s what Holdsworth always used
This is really fantastic!-- I love the way you demystify the line. I remember hearing this and for the life of me I couldn't figure out what he was doing. I really can't believe he's moving patterns around on the fretboard-- you can't even hear the pattern because of the way the odd number of notes partitions over the 16ths. How do you do your transcribing? Do you slow the line down with quicktime or VLC some other software?
Thanks very much, so glad you like it! I’ve also got another couple of Holdsworth videos on my channel you might like. Holdsworth used quite a lot of patterns but was brilliant at disguising them, I find him incredibly inspiring (& hard) to transcribe as he has a seemingly endless stream of great ideas. I use Amazing Slow Downer for transcribing, although there’s a few options on the market now
This is great. Do you think Allan uses Slonimsky intervals to add in the chromaticism or is it symmetrical scale patterns to sound outside? Sorry I'm just trying to understand how he plays outside then brings it back again. Superb playing!
VoodooDragon 76 thanks very much! Holdsworth uses different approaches to playing outside, from simply moving something up or down a fret (which is essentially what he does at the start of the line), to using chromatic passing notes & patterns (eg the five note chromatic pattern I mention which he moves systematically across the strings and up), to superimposing scales and arpeggios (eg the Bm(maj7) he outlines towards the end). The secret to playing outside successfully is resolving strongly; so for example on a Gm7, whatever strangeness you go into, ending up strongly back in Gm7 (eg outlining a Gm7 arpeggio or G minor pentatonic)
Excellent demo! Do you have a demo of the line you use in your intro and outro music anywhere?
Thanks very much! I’m afraid I don’t, it’s just me playing over the backing track I made for a Larry Carlton line
Would love to see some how to videos for the work you did with Shpongle
Thanks DrSterlingSimmons. I'd be happy to if people are interested...?
@@PeteCallard ppl are interested!!!
What gets me is that that sort of convoluted line only works when you play it fast. At slow speeds it just sounds weird and the way the run resolves at the end is just incredible.
So, true, it’s an amazing line
What gear are you using???
Sounds dope.
Thanks very much Sebastián! The guitar is a custom built Eternal S Type with their pickups, and it's going through a Fractal Axe FXII into Logic. I added a bit of eq, compression, & reverb in the mix
Niiice!!
What amps are you using to achive that dark but warm sound?
@@sebastianastacio4403 I can't remember exactly to be honest, but probably a Mesa Boogie Mark 3 type. It helps to boost the low mids a bit and roll off some top end, or roll of the tone control on the guitar a bit

Thanks man
made easy
Even if I actually pull this off, after playing this line the following lines which will be something I come up with will sound like trash. Lol
Ha ha - that’s a problem we all share!
Those 4th intervals are likely all played on the same string
Could be
