Love to see you listening to more Deftones
yes we need more of deftones!
yes please! Their song Royal or Spell of Mathematics
I saw them at Leeds festival UK in the 2000's.. they were still dope AF 🔥
Came to say the same!
Deftones never disappoint. More Deftones please!
Glad to see that one of your patrons didn't want Alient Ant Farm to be forgotten beyond the MJ cover
I was always a big fan of Happy Death Day
@@MrSteve88 That whole album really has no skips except for Smooth Criminal. Pretty sure the CD was in my 5 disc changer all through 6th grade.
That album was saying underrated because of that single. Lots of it reminds me of the likes of glassjaw.
IMO - Courage, Attitude, or Universe would be the best examples of the AAF musical range. Geebz needs to hear one of the true Bassadilla songs
Another great Deftones song from this same album is 'Xerces'
You are right about the Pumpkins /Deftones connection. Billy had Chino on stage for a couple songs a few years ago.I think Chino was a big fan of Siamese Dream, maybe Mellon Collie as well
Chino sang Bodies from Mellon Collie and Snail from Gish at that show
It feels like a high school reunion 😊
The Fred you referenced during the P.O.D. Song would be Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit.
John Otto! Take 'em to the Matthews Bridge!
You can tell I like the song Cherry Waves
Glad you mentioned the bass specifically, because Nu-Metal had SO many insanely talented bassists. Fieldy from Korn, Will from Papa Roach, Ryan from MudVayne, Sam from Limp Bizkit, it was almost a requirement for the really groovy Nu-Metal to have a slick bassists who could shred.
Cherry waves is haunting, for me at least. Reminds me of a blue sky during summer in highschool.
It reminds me of dark streets at night lit by amber colored streetlight with crickets cirping in the bushes because I discovered this album while going on walks alone at night through my neighborhood
Reminds of the autumn colors and that fresh fall air prob bc the album came out in October from what I recall
I'm pretty sure it's about a toxic relationship, the production is really fitting, great song
Ryan from mudvayne is an insanely talented Ted bass player. Some of his stuff from LD 50 is crazy. Great choices Geebz you’re closing in on 300k keep up the videos. Alllllllright
Wow I haven't heard that Alien Ant Farm song since THPS3.
The song Screaming by Loathe is off their 2020 album I Let It In & It Took Everything. It was one of the most exciting unique and enjoyable listening experiences I have ever had with an album. It brings you on a journey with interludes, heaviness and some ballad moments with some really unique soundscapes I have never heard before. I strongly believe it will be marked as one of the greatest metalcore albums of the decade!
As far as i remember, I-E-A-I-A-I-O was literally just a vocal warmup excercise comprised of tongue twisters turned into a song...
There are loads of theories about what I-E-A-I-A-I-O actually means...
The main one is that those are the vowels to the words: idealization, illegalization, liberalization, and internalization.
Knowing SOAD, there's almost always a deeper meaning, but on surface level it's just tongue twister mumbo jumbo.
"We light up the sky" makes my mind immediately think war, but they have a lot of tracks about that so that wouldn't be too surprising. I believe this was the first SOAD track I heard on the radio for Steal this Album, but Innervisions ended up being played far more.
@@metalboy27 i find it hilarious that this ever made it on the radio lmao...
Guessing it was some sort of local, strictly rock/metal station?
Heck yeah! Stoked to hear a song from SOAD's "Steal This Album!". Definitely gotta do more from that album.
Definitely ( heh ) do more Deftones ! But also, that Alien Ant Farm album is absolutely fenomenal, you should listen to the whole thing.
one of the most underrated albums of all time!
Deftones is in their own tier. A lot like Tool. This track “Cherry Waves” is just otherworldly.
love the LOATHE and deftones. Glassjaw is another band of that ilk that perhaps doesn't get enough love
Deftones is one of the most under appreciated bands ever. I recommend an intense Deftones song called Rapture. Another good song is Needles and Pins from their self titled album which is often overlooked.
Eh? They're massive
@@GapeGangwhat I mean is they have been under appreciated by the broader musical community. This video is a perfect example. Keyof Geebz has a lightbulb moment and realizes how musically advanced deftones are when he hears Cherry Waves. He realizes deftones is not just another metal band. I’m glad deftones is getting some deep analysis from the UA-cam community. In general they’ve been trending on UA-cam for the last year or so which I am very happy about because I am a long time fan. For a long time it was not cool to be into deftones because they are labeled as nu-metal which people like to make fun of, but if you look past labels, their music is some of the most interesting out there. So I’m glad they’re getting some love from someone other than just long time fans.
Love to see you listening to Radiohead, Deftones, Tool, and other bands that pay so much attention to not just their compositions but their production too. Your analysis is always insightful and entertaining. Thanks Geebz!
Serj is in our hearts ❤ and all good musicians, such as Corey Taylor, Johnathan Davis, Max Cavalera, Chester, James, David, M. Shadows, Jacoby and tons of others
I'm here for that SOAD deep cut. Was always a standout for me when I stole that album.
I remember this stream from forever ago, and was wondering if/when we'd see it again! I'd definitely love to see some more "themed" streams in the future.
i love how SOAD always finds a way to add some middle-eastern vibes. that simple refrain is so cool. also idk why you dont react to rammstein. they also have nice unusual stuff
The bass line in Cherry Waves is 🤌
Oh man when you mentioned Korn’s influence during Chester’s verse, that epiphany hit me like a truck. I’d absolutely love to hear Jonathan Davis sing a cover of Points of Authority. That would be incredible.
Man P.O.D is amazing! Gotta react to them more
I follow Sonny on IG and he always seems like a really good dude, always out helping people in his community etc. On top of that, there are many bands that rode the "Christian heavy music" label for a long time until it wasn't convenient for them (especially bands signed to labels like Tooth & Nail) but you can tell he's never been about that. He always seems super humble even with P.O.D.'s popularity back in the day etc.
@@metalboy27 yes he is, met him back in I believe 2015. And is a solid dude. The whole group is. But I like Jason Truby more than Marcos tbh. Self titled favorite album they have ever did. Regardless they’re legit
I couldn’t wait until you got to the breakdown on the Papa Roach song. I love that little bass part there and I knew you would dig that part. As a fellow bass player I appreciate the love.
If I'm not wrong (and I often am), that SOAD song had a little nod to the Knight Rider theme around 40:43 in your stream.
Good grief I love it when Loathe goes heavy. A lot of the shoegazy stuff isn't my jam from them, but the heavy! I've listened to Gored soooooo many times thanks to someone's suggestion on a past Geebz video. I wish they would stay in that pocket more often.
Thanks for the reactions!
Mudvayne has A LOT of bangers
Man, what a nostalgia dump!
So much going on here, and happy to see bands like Deftones, Mudvayne, Linkin Park, and S.O.A.D. come through again. I mean, let's face it, i'm happy to see ALL the bands on this list!😂
Thanks for getting this onto the channel, Geebz; always love a long session of great music! When I had a *measly* 200 or 300 songs on my ipod in middle school, it was always fun to hit shuffle and chill out to all the random bands, albums, & singles (of which, Linkin Park and Slipknot were a good chunk!)
After getting more into collecting and experiencing _way too many_ new bands (each with so many great albums to pick up) I have way too many songs stocked up on itunes to _really_ enjoy hitting shuffle and just letting it play. I think it's close to 7,000 now...👀
Videos like these are fun to experience again, especially when the tracks are so nostalgic to me.
Love it, Geebz! Hope the week treats you well, especially considering we're already *one month* into 2024...🙄
I fucking blinked and here we are!😂
But that's gonna happen every year, you can't really help it.
Thanks for all you do, Geebz! I'm still here & keep on rocking!🤙🤘
Also, it's totally appropriate to gush over the bass in Nu-Metal. With hip hop being so foundational to nu-metal, it makes sense that the bass would be given a chance to shine! You should seriously consider giving that first Papa Roach album "Infest" a listen on the channel. The bass is phenomenal throughout.
So glad you did Cherry Waves, my favorite song by my favorite band. Totally agreed about some Smashing Pumpkins lineage in Deftones - they both provide a mix of melody, heaviness and textural elements in their own idiosyncratic way.
Points of Authority and Lying from You are the best Linkin Park songs imo. Their first two albums were really good.
Thank you for introducing me to Loathe. I'd never heard of them until today.
Lol you had me rolling. Who was the guy with the hat 🤣. Fred Durst limp Bizkit
Love your channel bro such outstanding insights
What a blast from the past this deconstruction was... I had forgotten how big of a part of my life ALL of these groups, and in several cases, these individual songs were. Thank you for releasing this as I was not able to be a Patreon member and missed this completely. Cheers!
Still here...
Paparoach debut album is a classic.
That was a nice one. Missed you Geebz 🤙🏻
Thanks for the videos
Some absolute bangers in this session.
I really enjoyed this one. Lots of songs I know quite well. Thank you!
Thank you Geebz
it really is effing incredible. they really blew the roof with it
MORE OF THIS PLEASE. Thank you 🤟😎🍻💯🔥
So so happy you finally got around to Cherry Waves. Absolutely my favorite song by them as well. Really speaks not only to the soul musically, but lyrically as well.
I love you key of geebz, always did.
Some great tracks here Geebz! Encouraged me to go back and re-visit these bands! Aloha.
Great to still see new content from you man! Good reactions as always. Out of these, did you have a favorite?
I really love what they did with the u vowel in "the waves suck" on the chorus of cherry waves
Hey man! So happy to see you again! Extremely enjoyable reaction, thank you! As a 40 year old GenXer, all of these bands helped me when I was younger. More nostalgic than PTSD now, & my Spotify list reflects this talented list of musicians. Peace and Love.
That was funnnn!!! Deftones and Slipknot are my shit!!!...& Mudvayne too🤘
One of the best parts of nu metal is they aren't afraid to turn the bass up in the mix. You rock Geebz!
I agree geevs,, amazing and my favorite track of deftones. It has all their elements and is beautiful.
Got tickets to see mudvayne in 12 days for the first time can't wait
The Mudvayne album L.D.50 has some insane bass playing, and the songs are much less radio friendly and more interesting than their later music. Deftones has inspired so many modern Shoegazey punk/metal bands, they appeal to everyone.
great video. One thing i will say is that I really enjoy seeing your background in your videos; coffee cup and all! It kinda adds an atmosphere that is unique to your channel.
I do like seeing the lyrics along with the songs you're listening to in case im not familiar with them.
Much love!
Awesome! Thank you!
Also - That Paparoach album is a front to back banger of an album. I remember buying it for $20 and at that time was like 2 weeks of allowance. Worth every dime.
Hey man, huge fan of your channel! Would absolutely love to see your reaction to den helige anden by vildhjarta if you ever want to give them another shot. Keep up the great work!
Cherry Waves is my fav Deftones song for sure!
Good timing for you to listen to Between Angels and Insects with your new job.
Wes Borland, guitar player for Limp Bizkit, used to remove his top 2 strings. Just heavy riffing. Not sure if that continued for very long, but he did it for awhile
I'd say, that there's equally as much of as influence behind Chester's vocal style from Trent Reznor as it is from Jonathan Davis
Thank you for those, Geebz! Would love you to check out new The Smile album (Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead).
Very trippy stuff, layered and immaculately composed and produced. You'd love it!
Bending Hectic, Teleharmonic, Under Our Pillows, Read The Room... whatever you pick would be amazing really
Re- Deftones - 1st and foremost my favorite band since about 1999. I find it awesome that even when they themselves weren't too thrilled about the SNW album as a whole, we as fans still see/hear the beauty and creativity in that offering.
Spit it Out is that perfect fusion of hip-hop and brutal nu-metal and Corey's performance on this track is a one of a kind frenetic vocal maelstrom
Loathe is amazing
That album really is incredible
Hey! You got peanut butter on my Deftones!
I was so big into Nu Metal in high school (early 00s). This video brought back great memories (though I still listen to half of these bands semi-regularly) and a great new find (that Loathe song). One band that did not make it in this video is a newish band out of Texas called To Whom It May. They are a great band in the genre. Check out their song Calculate.
Nu metal is a pretty hard to debate topic but the way I see it it's not the bands that are nu metal its the time especially that like 1996~1997 to 2003~4 where that term referring to melding rap and metal really became closer to a movement with more than just a few bands all sounding completely different after deviating from what was the "traditional" sounds of metal. After that it's the emo phase which lead to metal core and now breakdowns and some more funky fusions seem to be happening again in the limelight.
Would love to see you react to anything from the Redefine album by Soil. Highly talented band and vocalist that deserves way more recognition. They got a Nu metal sound but also have that grungy Alice In Chains vibe mixed in there at times.
Geebz, you have to react to The Smiles New Album, Wall of Eyes, it’s a masterpiece. I think you were genuinely enjoy it. The strings work from Jonny Greenwood is exemplary and Thoms vocals are still haunting me…
Do more of these
Love watching your facial reactions to bass lines. Check out the history of Faith No More. I would argue they were the originators of 'nu-metal'.
golden times =D
If you want to see a crazy live performance in the rain, check out Reignwolf - Are You Satisfied? - Music Midtown
Also:
Have you heard anything from Devin Townsend? Try townsend playing Kingdom for EMG or his Quarantine performace of 'Why?'
You should definitely check out and react to mudvaynes out to pasture. Absolute banger
i am BEGGING for another Car Bomb track! Blackened Battery off their 2019 album Mordial takes inspiration from a lot of Metallica's works, with their usual weird time signatures and polyrhythms thrown in. If you want something really weird, their track Spirit of Poison off the album 'w^w^^w^w' is a good one, and if that album title doesn't sell it for you then I don't know what will lmao
Love everything you've been doin lately! Keep up the great work - much love from the netherlands
I haven't clicked to fast in a long time
Alien Ant Farm definitely isn't typical nu-metal. I don't think they're really 'one thing', they make super varied sounds.
LIMP BIZKIT, Korn, Incubus, coal chamber???
POD was contemporaneous with those other bands.
I feel like Deftones post White Pony album wouldn't really be considered Nu Metal anymore. I also have a hard time agreeing with SOAD being Nu metal as well.
But still love that you're listening to them!
Deftones really weren't considered Nu Metal by choice necessarily. They had the dreads and the ADIDAS look and people mistook them for Korn for that reason. Early deftones was definitely more hardcore thrash punk akin to Bad Brains more than anything else (like linus demo album) and White Pony only had two songs I would consider to be Nu Metal (Mini Maggit and Street Carp). Frank definitely morphed them into an Art Rock band
Cherry Waves is their most beautiful song ❤
My man came out with the peanut butter strat, respect lol
Hey dude, ERRA dropped a jam!
Phantom bride by deftones is so good
it absolutely isn't, sounds like generic dad rock
Would love to hear some of your thoughts about lyrics in metal!
POD had 2 guitarists back then. Of course one Lead and one Rhythm
1:22:05
Why did he reee?
I'm dying
Someone give this man a Bass Guitar 😂.
loathe and deftones ❤️
Nice video, nu metal doesnt always have rap/fast vocals, its main features are harsh vocals, bouncy guitar riffs or dj scratching, nu metal doesnt focus on solos and songs were usually shorter than earlier metal. Here are some more nu metal/rock songs -
Crazy town - toxic, skulls and stars
Shuvel - those who stand in line, when i think
Hinge - what?!
One minute silence - representing the poor man, rise and shine
Five foot thick - media fly
3rd strike - hang on
Adema - the way you like it
12 stones - soulfire
Slipknot - purity
Flaw - get up again
Linkin park - from the inside
Zeromind - blurred
Drowning pool - tear away
State of corruption - the day jesus gave away free tvs
Limp bizkit - rearranged
Smogus - good intentions
Papa roach - tightrope (even 2020 version)
Mostly into black metal, death, doom and sludge but still jam some mudvayne and deftones 😁
We need a reaction to World so Cold
I just came across your channel, I enjoy this. I looked, but have not seen any Stabbing Westward. What Do I have to Do? That is the song name and my question.
I’ve always found similarities between Deftones and Smashing Pumpkins as well. They both incorporate some shoegaze elements, but both sounds sound totally unique. Chino has actually performed with Smashing Pumpkins before, and has stated the early Pumpkins albums were an influence
🗣️ DEFTONES
