I have a great respect for the guys who take so much time on mobile installs whether it’s for competition or daily use, not a lot of room to work with considering vehicles and some times can become frustrating. Me personally, take the extra meticulous mile on my base station. Very cool install Mr.Miller and that’s a clean suburban too. 73
Never thought about using a backer plate but I'm just running a Wilson 1000 on the truck roof. Thanks for the installation class Luke, have a good Sunday.
Just a 4*16 so they can hear me 10 miles down the road. Lol my factory 955 can talk that far from mobile to mobile. My straight 8 can go a LITTLE bit further. Lol
Can't say enough about all your vids but this one might just be your best. Can't wait for the rest of the mobile install vids. Thanks for taking the time to show us your methods. 455 NYC
Thank you for this. I've had to deal with a ground pigtail to the puck before. It causes the feedline to radiate, affects SWR, and can cause RF microphone feedback. A quick fix is to clamp split ferrite beads over the coax and slide them up to where the ground pigtail exits the coax. Looking forward to the next installment!

Dr J Fresno Cal. R.I.P. helped me build my mobile & he was just like you , no shortcuts. Thank you for keeping this lost art going Mr BBI you big duck.
Just a Note to THANK YOU for taking the time to share. Over the years I have done a number of Installs (HACKS), as compares to what I have just watched. My next vehicle will incorporate what I have just learned. Thanks Again
Im almost certain your suburban's entire body and frame is all factory bonded by standard welding and bolting not glue like you keep saying. Use multimeter and youll see nearly all the metal in your vehicle is at the sane potential to your main and add on batteries (if said batteries are properly/heavily grounded to engine and chassis) Only possible resistance will be doors if plastic washers are used in hinges. I think only bonding that would make a noticeable difference is 1 strap on each door. Id put ferrite beads on all your car audio speaker wires and rca cable. For magmount its important to a solid connection between the foil film under the magnet and the internal antenna ground.
I love your videos. Technical stuff, but with some badassery for us Gen-X hams and bench techs. Pretty sure I'm not the only one who blares heavy metal and grunge while running LMR400 through my headliner.
The only thing I do differently with the mat is use a roller. I find I usually get a better bond by rolling the mat instead of just using finger pressure. And how well do those small antennas work for 2 meter?
Excellent video Luke. One quick question. Where do you get the connectors to make your "ground lug" to the shield side of the rg-393? Do you make them yourself?. Tnx and 73
Thanks this just in time as I'M about to do my 4x4 I bin fix up I have a breedlove 2 inch thick strap n the mat n I cut a plate To sandwich under the 8 inch I have bounded most of the truck Tube bumper's rock sliders roll bar Hood bed but I'm going to try your threaded rod
BBI I guess you are running a Mr Cooley antenna? What inch is the bottom shaft? What length shaft do you think is best on a suburban? And why? Do you like the predator 10 k antenna? I know I'm asking alot of questions but I'm trying to learn something, thanks man, CBJ NC got down
What are you going to run in there? The antenna looks like a CB antenna. You mentioned several alternators and additional batteries. What power will you be running? I don't know much about CB but isn't it limited to 4 watts on AM mode? Do you need a special license for high power? BTW, I've been running mobile HF for close to 20 years. Currently I use an Icom IC-7000 and a Tarheel 75A antenna. I agree with you about grounding and bonding. I did similar things in my 4Runner but the most important was to bond the exhaust to the frame in several places. Also, I bonded the body to frame and the rear axle to frame (to keep any RF current from pitting the rear bearings. Unlikely but possible). Prior to that, after I installed the radio and tried transmitting on 40 meters while driving, the check engine light came on and the vehicle went into limp mode (greatly reduced power). I'm glad I had an OBD2 reader with me and was able to clear the codes and get home. It would have been a major trouble if I didn't have the scanner with me. We were way out in the middle of nowhere. I highly recommend having one if you run a high power transmitter. Bonding the exhaust fixed the problem and the codes never came back.
That first whip antenna that you mentioned was made by Motorola is actually branded by Motorola and Harris, but is made by PCTel. It is not 0-6 meter, it is 136-174, 380-520 & 7/800 MHz. It is a 1/4 wave on VHF and is very wide-banded and works very well. They are what we use on our system for all 4 bands.
Great vid, very interesting; however, for a newcomer like myself, it'd also be great to see a more "basic" install, that is, one showing just the simple stuff that a newbie wud need to know on a FIRST install--thanx!
How much of this is applicable to a 10 and 11 meter setup? I'm guessing all of it, but is there anything you would do differently for a 10 and 11 meter. I'm not even clear what band this video is for because of the antennas you use. Anyways, sorry for the dumb questions, but I'd rather ask than screw something up. Thanks so much. I love your videos. This info is priceless.
The only thing I don't understand, for the grounding is super, but at the wattage you talked about running, and the electronics that is involved in todays vehicles, how do you keep from getting into that ??
Well the thing that we've worked out is the RF will stay on the outside of the vehicle for the most part. Some of the higher frequencies get blocked out by the just simple things like the tent that's in the windows. You ever noticed how your garage door opener sometimes won't work if your vehicle is just a certain way and there's too much window tint in the way.. that helps put a good grounding system a little bit of properly placed ferrite the wires that go to and from the electronics aren't residents of the RF just kind of passes right on by. I really wish in modern vehicles they would do Twisted leads on most of the electronics that would help so much
Watch AvE’s take on star washers and other mechanical type “lockers”….I believe, in short, he found everything is virtually worthless except “nordlock” (I think they’re called) washers…they’re kind of a cupped washer with spiral type tooth on the washer… he has a good take on the situation! Good on the Loctite!
Newer Burban. Curious to see if there will be any problems with the the computer controlled bits of the car. Sure he'll keep the ride from being an RFI mess, but it may just be a case of overload and proximity.
I'm looking forward to finding this out myself. But I'm sure there's not going to be any problems that I can't overcome with either grounding or ferrite choking
I’m planning to do an install on my Toyota pickup but my biggest concern is Airbags, not sure if that’s ever been an issue for anyone. I would be happy with 500w carrier so relatively qrp compared to what you run. Ps the power/temp rating on your feeder is when it’s in free air for cooling, watch out if you cover it.
Either or.. the main thing is contacted the surface area of the vehicle body period at lower output power levels the the bond of the magnet to the body of the vehicle for more than substantially. But once you start to increase your power output level that magnetic connection becomes woefully inadequate
Could you have run the ground strap between the reinforcement rods and the sheet? Maybe along one end for one strap and the other end for the other…? Just thinking aloud and I seriously know a little less than nothing so take it for what it is worth….-noob
