Stonewall Forever is a documentary from NYC’s LGBT Community Center directed by Ro Haber. The film brings together voices from over 50 years of the LGBTQ rights movement to explore queer activism before, during and after the Stonewall Riots.
The history of the Stonewall Riots is equally as cherished as it is charged. There are questions of who was there, who “threw the first brick” and who can claim Stonewall. This film doesn’t answer these questions but instead it aims to expand the story of Stonewall by including more voices in its telling.
Stonewall Forever brings together queer activists, experienced and new, to look at the movement for LGBTQ equality before, during and after Stonewall. It highlights trans people, people of color and homeless people who were at the forefront of the movement, and who have often been erased from the narrative. It explores how the activism of today stands on the shoulders of the activists who have come before. And it asks us all to recognize the legacy of Stonewall that remains today, when the struggle for queer rights is far from over.
Stonewall Forever was directed by Ro Haber and created by a predominantly queer and trans cast and crew who are proud to be a part of preserving this legacy.

Chella, you're paving the future. I hope you know you are so, so loved and admired.
I am a 12 year old kid. I will be 13 in 3 days. I first heard and learned about the Stonewall riots when I was 11 years old in the 6th grade. I will be going into the 8th grade when this summer ends. I heard about Stonewall because of a project I decided to do. In social studies, in the 6th grade, we had to make a project all about a historical moment. They gave us a list of things on a sheet of paper but also told us if we had our own idea we could use it. I decided to do my project on trans rights. I came out as transgender ftm in February of this year (2019). I learned a lot about it and I hadn't realized everything the LGBT community went through for there to even be some rights for us. Learning about Stonewall taught me that I should be grateful to have the rights that I do today and that I deserve those rights, and I am so glad that I got to teach all the other students in my class about Stonewall. I will be going to my first pride parade on the 15th this month. Can't wait, Happy Pride Month everyone ❤️🌈🏳️

This is now my favorite documentary, because as a transman individual living in the present moment its humbling to see that people even from way back then fought for me to walk knowing that people know that i exist atleast...

Thank you, thank you so much. I live in a country where same sex marriage is illegal, where trans rights are never brought up, where there are no lgbtq+ centers even in the biggest cities, where hate towards the community is the norm. It makes me so happy to see people take action and want to make a difference, but at the same time it crushes me to see just how much behind my country is. There just was a very important election and a far-right party won. I hope for a better future, but it doesn’t seem it’s going to be a near one. I seek support and people to identify and share the same views with on the internet and you are one of them. You make me feel validated. One more time, thank you.
we will make it one day. i live in the most conservative region of the country you're talking about and i'm still telling you - we will make it one day. the community needs to stay strong and fight until we're accepted. it will take a shittone of time, yes. but it will happen.
I am so thankful for the people who came before me who make it possible for me to live freely.

I live in NYC and a few weeks ago I went to stonewall with my school for a trip. it was so inspiring and so amazing I love that people are realizing that it is here and it is a monument for gay liberation.

This is one of the most well put together documentaries that I’ve ever seen. There needs to be more videos like this on line so that people have resources to education themselves. I think that videos about the history human rights in America should be taught in schools, but we also need to be better about education our selves and each other.

Love this! I go to an episcopal school called St. Luke’s on Christopher and Hudson right near Stonewall. Our church and school were very much involved with Stonewall especially in the 80s during the aids epidemic. In eighth grade we do a unit on Stonewall. I think it’s really important to teach teenagers about such pivotal point in history. As a straight person I am very uneducated about a lot of things in terms of the lgbtq+ community even growing up in New York City in the 2010s. If we don’t start educating kids all over America not just in this city we’re going to end up with an endless cycle of homophobia, transphobia, and overall bigotry. Platforms like yours are helping with that change. Thank you. 💕💕

All of this is so important. I don't want the LGBTQI+ cause to become only depoliticized and a trend brands can capitalize on. There is still so much fights to win, and a whole oppressive system to anihilate. The Pride must be a moment of joy where we can express our true selves, but needs also to be a way to amplify voices about political issues, because every systematic oppression we experience is linked someway with another. We're here, we're queer, and Pride is political.

I'm just in tears the whole time. Like I always felt alone. Alive, yes, but never truly lived. At some points in life you just have moments where you feel born again, with reasons and meanings and love and compassion, and this is truly beautiful and eye opening. A reminder of everything both good and evil and everything else in between the world and our soul. And it's healing. And it's painful. And it motivates, and speaks louder than words. And it comforts every part of my being. And I feel not as small and voiceless as before.

Can we all take a minute to appreciate the fact that this documentary depicts not only the struggle of the lgbtq+ community throughout the decades, but as well the fact everyone that appeared supported, above all, the liberation of people, no matter race, color, gender, ethnic background and so on? It simply shows we should unite, as we are all equal, but above all, set ourselves free as people. Like they said, in the end, its just a matter of not giving a fuck and living, what for you, is a happy life. Props to Chella Man for sharing the documentary for people, like me, who didn't have an indepth knowledge of this story and where it all start. Thank you.

It's great to see soe of us LGBTQ+ elders get our voices in along with the younger folk. If we lose them we lose our history.

I first heard of Stonewall as in the name of the LGBT+ charity when a friend began working there years ago. I didn't know why it was named that at the time. It's only recently when another friend told me about her love for Sir Ian McKellen and how he founded the charity and named it after an event in history that I began to learn about it. Strangely since then Stonewall seems to be popping up a lot! (I'm not LGBT+ so it's not that it would be particularly likely to show up in my life more than others') It's awesome that more people are learning about the history of those who fight for equality ❤️ Exactly like you say trans rights are human rights, the same applies to all minorities:
💜black rights are human rights
💜gay rights are human rights
💜women's rights are human rights
Etc...
If any group of people is singled out and discriminated against that hurts us all collectively and creates fear and division even amongst those that aren't 'directly affected'. I'm not christian but it's like the Bible verse that says 'whatever you do to the least of my brothers you do unto me'. All humans deserve respect and equal rights. Love you Chella and everyone who is working to liberate others and create a safer and fairer world ❤️🏳️🌈

Not sure if it was the same doco or just a coincidence but I think I got stopped outside of Stonewall on a holiday in April and while I was at Tribeca by this crew, and they asked me to do a talking head on what Stonewall meant to me and I talked about how I'm nonbinary and almost teared up because I would not exist as ME without this movement and this place
