  • Did you know there was a vegan gelatin substitute, and it's from the ocean?
Irish Moss is a red algae that contains trace amounts of 15 essential minerals and 92 total minerals. It’s high in calcium, iodine (helps protect against radiation) and potassium. Irish Moss is high in vitamins A, E F and K. Also high in the amino acid Taurine, which is a required building block of protein.
Irish Moss also regulates blood sugar, and contains antiviral and antibacterial properties, which make it a great supplement when experiencing sickness.
It grows on rocks, in rock pools in the lower intertidal and shallow subtidal zones in cool Atlantic waters and is very widely used in Jamaica.
Irish Moss paste is used to thicken smoothies, pies, puddings and cakes.

Crystal - the blonde colored irish moss is bleached from exposure to sunlight. It is moss that is collected from beaches, natural storm and waves and wind have torn it from its bed and it has drifted ashore where it is collected. The purple irish moss is much, much fresher and can be raked directly from its bed (irish moss responds well to raking and grows back like a lawn so long as its holdfast is not disturbed. It may be raked up to 4 times per summer). The purple moss is much less likely to cause a stomach ache. I have harvested wild irish moss, which is why I know. Thought you could use this info - DN

Where to get a good quality batch. I tried this once, it was very irritating to my gut but it may not have been the best quality. Thanks.
