I love Raphael because he was in my opinion good presentation of how Devil should be. He's not in-your-face evil, he's charming, calm, etc, but you can see something is off about him. When he offers you a deal, he makes it so that you think it's one of your own making where you will come up top, but like Wyll said, house always wins and there's no way of beating the devil(s) at their own game. Which brings me to a scene where Mol signs a contract with him, he flat out allows her to beat him at chest, giving her false impression she can beat Devil at his own game. Also I think lot of it comes from terrific voice acting performance, he didn't raise his voice once and his lines sounded threatening because he always spoke like he's in absolute control. I played as paladin on my second run and because he's the literal devil, naturally I was very hostile towards him and Raphael was like "oh come now, no need for such behavior, you're civilized little mouse, aren't you?"
The absolute magical moment when you're at the end of the House of Hope plotline and you're about to begin the most (in my opinion) daunting fights in the whole game, and *that* song comes on. Oh laaaawd. Not just because it's unexpected as there are almost no songs with actual lyrics in the game, certainly not battle themes, but it's sung by Raphael HIMSELF. My jaw actually fell wide open. I mean, add on top of that the fact it was like a Disney villain song, and so well performed. It was just such a perfect addition to the moment that made it one of the most memorable in the entire game. Well done
It gave me absolute whiplash. Like, the moment where my brain told me "that isn't the cool boss theme, that music is IN GAME." I've been in a lot of boss fights, but never one where the boss dropped a diss track while it happened.

It's good when the audience hates your evil character, it means you played it well. A character is only bad when it doesn't cause any emotional reaction.
Please tell Andrew that when we're talking about Disney villain's song we mean "Hellfire" from Hunchback of Notre Dame. Raphael's song reminded me about it almost instantly
Some of the characters are based off of the voice actors. Like laezel looks like her voice actor with her nose shrivelled up and githyanki features, but you can definitely tell.
18:48 Yes Scar from The Lion King with Hans Zimmer's epic score is such a good comparison. Very Shakespearean and mustache-twirling but with Hope's angelic offset
Andrew is just a BLESSING. Such an incredible actor and vocalist. I remember getting into the boss fight with Raphael and listening to the song in full before fighting. You have to be truly skilled to make people hate or despise your character. He really sold the concept of a villan with his voice acting and motion capture. Truly, from the bottom of our hearts, Thank you Andrew for making this character come to life. And thank you to Dan for an excellent interview - as always!
I've first heard Andrew's voice in Warhammer 40k audiobooks, some of my favourites are voiced by him, including the Night Lords books which are phenomenal and the voice work just takes it to an other level in my opinion. So when I heard Raphael speak for the first time I literally went "YEEESSSS".
the Disney villain is 100% Jeremy Irons as Scar... thats what we all have in mind :) there are some nice resemblences with his brilliant musical song Be Prepared :)
At one point, listening to the interview with Andrew Wincott in the background, I couldn't help but imagine Raphael giving an interview, sitting comfortably in his chair in the House of Hope
Infiltrating the House of Hope is a moment in gaming that has everything come together so perfectly, there's nothing else I can compare it to in my 25+ years of gaming experiences, it's that special. The entire game is a perfect blend of talent, vision and direction, and Andrews performance as Raphael, from his first appearance ("The Devil you know" line really drew me in) to his final, show-stopping number was immaculate, a poetic irony given the nature of his character. It's really nice to see an interview now, to see him made aware of how well received the song was. It's great to hear him give kudos to the direction and composer, as we take for granted their roles, and they absolutely blew it out of the water.
So many fantastic VA performances in this game - Dan, would it be possible to get the VA Larian team to talk about their work? Whether casting or directing, it'd be fascinating to see their side of this amazing work. Thank you for the videos, they're great!
All of your interviews have been amazing, somehow on this one I just felt the need to go back and listen again to really make sure I absorb what Andrew was saying. As someone who's voice acted in over 100 games before he has a really unique perspective on the artform.
Fell in love with Mr. Wincott's voice when I listened to the Night Lords audiobooks over the past year. You have no idea how big I smiled when I recognized him voicing Raphael. Was like running into an old friend again. "Holy shit, it's Talos!!!"
Love these interviews. Each one has brought a unique flavor to the passion they have for their craft and how that passion has made this game so special.
He's one of the best voice actor for a villain character. He's voice is so menacing and intimidating. He's like perfect for this role, honestly. He's just too good, man.
Thank you Dan for allowing space for Andrew to tell his story/experience. I'm reticent to call this a great interview only because it felt more like friends just having a chat.
Fantastic interview I am enjoying them a lot, with all the BG3 Cast, Raphael is such a terrific character, always reminding me of Satan played by Al Pacino Devil's Advocate same energy, same charisma. Is there a chance to get Minthara VA interview next?
I went into work early today and was listening to Raphael's Final act on a loop and after about the third repeat 2 of my workmates just spontaneously say, "Man I loved that scene' and "oh my god I got my ass handed to me by him" with no other context. I didn't even know those two played BG3. That's how universal this song and Andrew has become!
I can so relate to that second opinion 😂. It took me 1,5 days to beat that fight. Anyways, I love his performance to hell hot bits! Raphael is so intense.
Andrew was without a doubt my favorite voice actor in this game, every line he gave was so captivating and daunting. Absolutley loved his performance and hope to see him in many, many more projects.
This man deserves an award for how amazing he portrayed Raphael. Definitely my favorite voice actor in this game with lazel and shadowheart not far behind.
Legendary! Raphael was spellbinding as a character despite how little we see of him! He’s such a magnificent devil! What a talented actor with an amazing voice!
Mr. Andrew please let me tell you, you did a most perfect job thank you for your work, house of hope was simply one of the best gaming moments of my life. Thank you
I mean… his face is Raphael as well… so Raphael EXISTS. I’m in love LOL Jokes aside he did such an amazing job, as all VA actually, such a pleasure to hear such talented voices in a videogame.
This guy is a really classical style actor. Seems to have a good grounding in the craft. Talking about "not trying too hard" and how important casting is to a production (90% of a performance) really tells you how he approaches acting, and I couldn't agree more. I hope he gets more work in more "AAA" games or I should rather say "good" games ;)
I ran a tabletop game of Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus and really delved into the lore of the Blood War, devils, demons, the Abyss, etc. To the point that I cringe and have to stop myself from correcting people when they call a devil a demon. Raphael so elegantly captures the thoughtful, intelligent, gracefulness that devils cover themselves in to hide their utter eternal misery. It is such a captivating performance that fits so well what came before.
Yeah! This is one of the interview I was really looking forward to. Raphael is a magnificent character with magnificent voice behind him. Thank you Andrew for your performance.
His voice was perfect for his role and also his singing was OUTSTANDING. I think I lost 15 minutes during the bossfight because I was mesmerized by the theme he sang along with Hope's voice actress. The only moment that was so damn good was Karlach's speech after defeating archduke Gortash... That part made me cry
The voice acting in BG3 is up there as one of THE BEST of all time for me. Every nook and cranny is crammed with talent - even the animals. Andrew was one of the standouts in a top tier cast for me, next to J.K. Simmons as Ketheric. Every interaction with Raphael I just sat there and was like, "Man the voice actor is killing it." So many moments in the game did this to me, but nothing put a smile on my face more than Raphael's Final Act. Easily going down in my eternal memory of best moments in gaming.
Andrew really is an Artist. And his work really is art. Raphael isn't just a character from a game, he really is great art, too. Thanks for that, Andrew!
I played the raphael final act blind and it blew my mind. The song was the coup of all time in the history of video games. When I heard that song, the intensity, 666 hit points... all I thought was "The Devil just took the wheel... and I'm just a backseat driver!!!"
Imagine playing this game all the way through and missing the final boss fight with Raphael - Andrew was great - Raphael is my 'favourite' character in the game.
Raphael is an amazing character. You know what he is, yet you will ALWAYS listen to him. You will ALWAYS hear him out, even if you've heard him say it before. Because he is THAT GOOD at selling the deal. You are captivated him. He was perfectly cast, perfectly voiced, perfectly directed. Amazing.
To me, the song is as memorable and entertaining as hearing a classic Disney villain song - from Lion King's "Be Prepared" to Moana's "Shiny". That's how great it was. Some might not agree with me on that extent, but the song has claimed a permanent residence in my brain and will never fail to make me grin from ear to ear.
Man the Nightlords' trilogy is my favorite thing on audible, so when i saw that Andrew Wincott was voicing Raphael my jaw hit the ground. How could i have missed it? Incredible work regardless!
Fantastically written character and amazing performance. I thoroughly enjoyed Raphael and the boss fight music was one of those unforgettable moments in gaming for me. As soon as I heard his voice in the boss music I got chills and was smiling from ear to ear. Thank you so much Andrew
Final Act is an absolute masterpiece. It was so thrilling to play that for the first time. I have seen thaetrical villains, but to have one turn our showdown into a performance must be one of the most genious parts of this game.
Gosh, Raphael was so memorable. Truly a well written, well acted, well voiced NPC. My #1 fave NPC from ALL of BG3. Unforgettable. Andrew's voice and acting really, really, sold him.
Raphael has a presence. The scene that made me appreciate him more was his conversation with the party regarding him trying to make a deal for a certain 10 year old or so little girls soul. It was like he was placing a bid for a painting he liked.
Dan, thank you for your ability to bring the best in people. This passive charisma bringing all of them here and letting them feel comfortable sharing stuff
Right. I just realise I have been listening to the devil reading Orwell's 1984 on audible. Really recommend it btw...Fantastic book, and another great performance by Wincott.
The amount of hours I have listened to Raphael's song- I'm sensetive to noises and have sensory overload a lot at school so I have to listen to music. I listened to that song for like 2 whole school days in a row on repeat for like 6-7 hours both days and I'm still not tired of it. It's so good
Andrew did a amazing job. Giving it time from my playthrough and frankly... Next play through, working for him. OH WAIT JUST SAW HIM IN WITCHER 1! Rocky horror and disney villain... Mans a Celestial entity of hell.. He's more focused on getting a crown then usual devilry.
They were all motion captured, so their mannerisms are pretty much baked into the characters so they probably used some of their base look and tweaked as needed.

it's gotten so bad I started trying to replay the score. it had enthralled me x) pun intended
I laughed when it started, then had to reload the fight just to listen to the song before I focused on the fight.
Please tell Andrew that when we're talking about Disney villain's song we mean "Hellfire" from Hunchback of Notre Dame. Raphael's song reminded me about it almost instantly
I normally don't stop a video to give compliments, but Dan Allen, you are an excellent interviewer. Thank you these wonderful chats.
Wow, thank you!
Can't believe he actually looks like Raphael irl.
Some of the characters are based off of the voice actors. Like laezel looks like her voice actor with her nose shrivelled up and githyanki features, but you can definitely tell.
A lot of the VAs, especially the origin companions, do look quite similar to their characters.
An example of Disney villain it feels reminiscent of something of a mix of like Frollo, Scar and Dr.Facilier.
18:48 Yes Scar from The Lion King with Hans Zimmer's epic score is such a good comparison. Very Shakespearean and mustache-twirling but with Hope's angelic offset
Very gentle man. Like the way that Larian make character look like a voice actor little bit (nose, eyes, form of the face, for example)
SAME, i was so hyped when i talked to raphael and was like "hold up, i know this voice from somewhere" then it hit me "AND THERE AGAIN WE FAILED"
When i first heard him when he popped up i was like. THAT'S TALOS 😂😂
the Disney villain is 100% Jeremy Irons as Scar... thats what we all have in mind :) there are some nice resemblences with his brilliant musical song Be Prepared :)
At one point, listening to the interview with Andrew Wincott in the background, I couldn't help but imagine Raphael giving an interview, sitting comfortably in his chair in the House of Hope
Raphael is easily my top npc i this game, his performance was just incredible.
I want that voice to read me bedtime stories, it's so perfect.
would you sleep though?
"Which 90's Era Disney villain?"
Scar. His song was very reminiscent of Jeremy Irons singing "Be Prepared"
Love those interviews. Maybe we can get one with Borislav Slavov (composer) as well.
The moment you hear the boss singing his own song. You KNEW that you were in his own home and his going to take out the trash.
I don't hate Raphael I LOVE HIM, brilliant character
So many fantastic VA performances in this game - Dan, would it be possible to get the VA Larian team to talk about their work? Whether casting or directing, it'd be fascinating to see their side of this amazing work. Thank you for the videos, they're great!
I second this.
All of your interviews have been amazing, somehow on this one I just felt the need to go back and listen again to really make sure I absorb what Andrew was saying. As someone who's voice acted in over 100 games before he has a really unique perspective on the artform.
you come to boss fight with Raphael and you see 666 hp , puts a smile to your face straight away
Any plans on interview with Minthara voice actress? One of the best characters in the game?
There was a plan, but seems like something came up.
@@bluespaceman7937 So, is it still a thing? Are you going to feature her on your show?
Is she still planned to be featured on your show?
Andrew, you are an amazing actor! You should feel very proud of this work and I hope to see you in more role-playing games in the future
Fell in love with Mr. Wincott's voice when I listened to the Night Lords audiobooks over the past year. You have no idea how big I smiled when I recognized him voicing Raphael. Was like running into an old friend again. "Holy shit, it's Talos!!!"
I'm happy I'm not the only one! Blew my mind when I made the connection!
666 likes when I clicked on this video now. lol. Reality is messing with me. Raphael are you there somewhere? *looking around the room*
Love these interviews. Each one has brought a unique flavor to the passion they have for their craft and how that passion has made this game so special.
oh man, I am still recovering on how much this guy SMASHED HIS ROLE
The raphael fight and music, is now in my forever top gaming moments! loved it!
The voice acting for this game is on another level. They deserve an award
tbh it was either him or Neil were my candidates for the award
19:00 I think people have Frollo in mind (from The Hunchback of Notre Dame)
27:09 - literally a chuckle from Raphael swear to god
This man deserves an award for how amazing he portrayed Raphael. Definitely my favorite voice actor in this game with lazel and shadowheart not far behind.
raphael... audiobooks.. 👀
His reading of 1984 is fantastic. Almost need to listen to it again now. lol.
Legendary! Raphael was spellbinding as a character despite how little we see of him! He’s such a magnificent devil! What a talented actor with an amazing voice!
"Is it okay to talk about this?" oh my god, I just can't... he's so adorable. How can I adore every single person involved with this game??
Ikr??? The cast is just THAT good
Mr. Andrew please let me tell you, you did a most perfect job thank you for your work, house of hope was simply one of the best gaming moments of my life. Thank you
What a modest man. Almost like an opposite of the devil ;)
I mean… his face is Raphael as well… so Raphael EXISTS. I’m in love LOL
Jokes aside he did such an amazing job, as all VA actually, such a pleasure to hear such talented voices in a videogame.
Raphael is such an amazing character and Andrew did an absolutely fantastic job! This is the interview I've been waiting for haha
great interview!
Yeah! This is one of the interview I was really looking forward to. Raphael is a magnificent character with magnificent voice behind him. Thank you Andrew for your performance.
The song is a lovechild between be prepared from scar and hellfire from hunchback, pushed to overdrive
damn, unexpected!!
WE MAKING IT OUT OF AVERNUS WITH THIS ONE
"We all have bits of Raphael in us, don't we?" -- Well, My character certainly did......
Raphael is such a charismatic guy due to his voice!
One of the best characters in the game 👍🏻
Love it ❤ such a treat hearing him & the whole Baldurs Gate cast
His voice was perfect for his role and also his singing was OUTSTANDING. I think I lost 15 minutes during the bossfight because I was mesmerized by the theme he sang along with Hope's voice actress.
The only moment that was so damn good was Karlach's speech after defeating archduke Gortash... That part made me cry
The voice acting in BG3 is up there as one of THE BEST of all time for me. Every nook and cranny is crammed with talent - even the animals.
Andrew was one of the standouts in a top tier cast for me, next to J.K. Simmons as Ketheric. Every interaction with Raphael I just sat there and was like, "Man the voice actor is killing it."
So many moments in the game did this to me, but nothing put a smile on my face more than Raphael's Final Act.
I did the same thing! Blew my mind when I made the connection!
Never knew he narrated for black library. Will have to check them out
I've just read it a few months ago, now I have to listen to it again :D
Fantastically written character and amazing performance. I thoroughly enjoyed Raphael and the boss fight music was one of those unforgettable moments in gaming for me. As soon as I heard his voice in the boss music I got chills and was smiling from ear to ear. Thank you so much Andrew
even in his natural form his voice just have so much character and charisma i just love it
Final Act is an absolute masterpiece.
He speaks and I hear Raphael. It's so perfect. Thank you, sir, for your effort. YOU made that character Raphael. Thank you.
When I heard his song my first thought was “What in the Nightmare Before Christmas is this?!” It gave me Jack Skellington vibes
At 18:56 on the "90s Disney villain" comment, my mind immediately goes to Judge Claude Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Imagine buying an audiobook and while you're listening you realize, thats the devil reading hahahaha
Right. I just realise I have been listening to the devil reading Orwell's 1984 on audible. Really recommend it btw...Fantastic book, and another great performance by Wincott.
@@kahinaloren awesome, His voice is perfect for that kind of book, I think. I'm going to look for it
The amount of hours I have listened to Raphael's song- I'm sensetive to noises and have sensory overload a lot at school so I have to listen to music.
Out of all the tentacle monsters, dragons, demons and whatnot Raphael creeps me out more than anyone AND THIS MAN IS THE REASON FOR IT. Amazing work.
How come all the voice actors somewhat resemble their game characters?
They were all motion captured, so their mannerisms are pretty much baked into the characters so they probably used some of their base look and tweaked as needed.
Andrew's performance of Raphael reminded me so much of the classic Basil Rathbone villains. Absolutely remarkable.
