- In this video we started to fix up our 1979 Schwinn The Sting. It is a amazing bit of 1970's BMX history! Due to time we decided to do a video on installing the replacement decals. We hope you enjoy the video.

Porkchop is usually my go-to for parts.. Gotta love the free shipping too. BMXmuseum is my main reference when I need to look up how things originally came back in the day, but you gotta really look through a lot of examples sometimes to make sure all the details are correct, which can be tricky sometimes. It came out great though! 😎

If you take the time to put new decals on , make sure they’re straight.
Personally, I think it's best to start right in the middle of the decal when putting one on, but that's just me... It helps me get it get everything lined up and as straight as possible. Jason did a nice job though. 👍
I wish I showed how crooked these decals were. These are straighter then the originals except for the chainstays. One went on crooked so I made the other one the same. Decals are mostly done by hand and mistakes are made. I have had more then one come in upside-down from the factory. Thanks for watching.👍
@@alloutbikes that's right, decals were put on crooked straight from the factory a lot of the time.. They were in a hurry and were trying to crank out product as quickly & cheaply as possible, not having time to make sure things like decals were perfectly straight.
Like you I don't like to bring a bike back to show room condition as all the "patina" tells a story, but if you have to replace decals then you might as well change them all as the one you leave will stand out like a sore thumb 😢
As to removing decals have you tried warming the area of the frame with a hair dryer? It helps soften the glue and the decal becomes more pliable and less likely to fall apart.
I use a heat gun for removing decals... Works great!
I did. The heat gun was just so loud I cut it out I didn't know it was that bad and I cut out talking about it because what audio you could hear didn't sound right. I pieced this together at 3am. Thanks for watching.👍
Looking back it probably was easier. It didn't work as well as in the past when you heat the decal up and peel it in one swipe. Most of these decals were in about a thousand pieces. Thanks again.🙂
