Safety note: glass should always be sanded wet to keep the dust from becoming airborne. Breathing glass dust is a bad idea.
Pro tip. Nobody wants bleeding lungs
Whoops...
From what I've read, crystalline silica is more harmful to breathe. Anphoric Silica, any glass that is clear, is less harmful.
cWg_Studios yea but the glass dust will end up cutting your lungs much like sawdust would.
cWg_Studios well it could cause long term damage such as nodules forming in your lungs and if the modules get too big it can cause death.
I want to try it but I've always too freaked out that it'll bust! lol
If you have the patience of Buddha and the finger strength of Thor then you too can have a rimless tank in a short 5 hours.
Ouchmydragonballz I’m 13 and did it in 10 minutes with a kitchen knife
I'mnosuperman 🤣😂😂😂
Username checks out
Haha totally feel that
I did it in 20-30 minutes whith a razor blade
I was really confident right before I started reading comments 😅
I did mine and it went perfectly :) how did yours go?
@@laraarias803 It well thanks for asking. I have a 55 gallon tank but I ran into some issues later on with supporting all the water weight without the frame. The width is 12in but without the extra support; the glass was popping out at 13.5 inches in the middle. I had to empty the tank and silcone a quarter inch thick 12x5in glass in the middle of the tank.
I just violently ripped mine off with my bare hands on an established tank, guess I got lucky
Braden Overgaard on an established tank!????? I could never I was even nervous doing it with an empty tank😂🙈
Man glad I complained about a filter! The jokes get tiring. I'll take this as a sign not to look further down the comments
This was a spectacular demo. I'm not ready for this technique as of yet, but I love the education. Thank You, AQUAPROS!
It works WAY faster and easier if you use a heat gun. Heat up the plastic and use a towel and pull it up. Works great. 20 dollars from Lowes. 10/10 would recommend
I'm Salty let’s see the tank
I use a steam gun
Do you need to reseal it after? I'm always told that's a must.
@@cardboardbox9977 I use a real gun. 0/10 Would NOT recommend
leolion1993 not funny didn’t laugh
I love leaving to bottom rim on and painting the back black to hide the wires. Its my favorote tank look if its ginna be against a wall or not viewable from all angles.
Thanks! I was literally just walking out into the garage to take the rim off my first tank when I got this video notification. Your explanation on bracing has dispelled some of my nervousness about my 10 gallon tank falling apart after I take the rim off :)
+stereosympathy yay for perfect timing!
There are just so many do-it-yourself projects out there these days and a ton of videos I subscribed because I just have to say that you have impeccable taste I really like the way you do your stuff and you have an eye for detail that a lot of people lack or give unnecessary detail
even three years later this was good to find. longer video explaining all the steps very clearly - yes. but the extra explanations help with any nervousness of some of your diyers out here. thanks for the extra bracing steps too... you make it look easy :)
Thanks, turned a $9 new 10 gal into rimless today and it came great. Tip for removing the silicone after the rims are off. Use a hair blower and fine steel wool. Start with a blade for the heavy stuff but clean up is a snap with heat and steel wool. Nope, not a scratch, I'm surprised too.
I know it’s been awhile but i’m curious as to how your tank has held up over time, I plan to do this to my 10 gallon
@@ashtonmendoza7043same
Great video! I found it very informative!! Keep up the great work!!
A couple of things people should note.
1. Do not use that type of box cutter. Use the one that you can really slide the blade out so that you can really get into the corners... if using the box cutter! And if you want to use a putty knife, get the one that is curved on one side going up to a point. Much safer tools.
2. If you want to use a brace like shown in the video, get two pieces of glass. One cut to the outside width of the tank, one to the internal width of the tank. Silicone the two pieces together and press together to ensure that there are no air bubbles showing in the silicone. Once the pieces are stuck together properly, but before the silicone has set, fit the brace into the tank and move it about to ensure that the width is set properly on the top piece. Once everything is in place, wrap some painting masking tape around the brace tightly so that it doesn't move while you are waiting the 24 hours for it to set. Once the silicone is set, trim any excess silicone from around the brace and then silicone it into place.
Looks much neater and nicer and is a lot more sturdy.
dramoth64 can I go rimless on a 75 gallon glass tank?
dramoth64 is bracing necessary?
Two One's Tanks did you go rimless on your 75 or find out info?
@@jerml6136 I completely missed the question from way back when. But the answer is depending on the thickness of the glass. 75G is roughly 280 litres, so 10-15mm glass would be best. If you're doing a 75 long, I would definitely use bracing. But if it's a cube shape, you can get away with it being rimless.
great video! I love rimless tanks. Just fyi you can wet the blades to remove the silicone a lot easier I usually just use a little bowl of warm water. thanks aquapros
Did it for the first time, looks great cant wait to set it up👍
that was really cool, I may try that on one of my 29g. thanks for sharing this with us.
Good video. A flexible plastic pant scraper works even better.
I've done this successfully on a 75 gallon and 30 gallon extra tall with no issues so far. The 75g I used a glass center brace that is 8 inches wide. The 30g extra high I was nervous about not bracing because it's so tall. But, I've had no issues for over a year now. I did not remove the bottom trim on either tank though. Only the top.
i have a 65 gallon tank. can i do it on my tank?
Where did you get the brace
How have they held up?
@@Members_Onlyy glass clamps connector work well too and don't forget the center brace
I respect how at the end he pushes you to go get others opinions as well, on how to do this same project and others. It sucks how these guys putting up videos trying to help us have to say such things to cover themselves from all the negative replies they expect to come. Great job, and video, as always very educational and helpful. Off to do my own now
I really like how you explain the process thank you
thank you!! I've been waiting for this video!!!!
Just did it on the same tank, works like a charm. Used a hard plastic scraper normally used for putty and wall repairs and it worked really well.
I am hoping your statement about not needing a brace support is still accurate because I’m going to put some water in without it🤞🏼. I did leave the bottom rim on so I’m hoping that adds strength.
Thanks for a rad video!
So is it still good without the brace?
Okay the comment section is full of “I broke my tank” comments but here’s something different to make you feel a bit more motivated to do it... I did break my tank a little bit too tho lol but actually it’s not that hard! Taking your time is the key to this! And also it is really cheap to do it, I probably spent like 30 bucks max but because I bought a rotary tool, that helps with the corners A LOT!!! But yeah, just follow the steps, take your time and be careful! Gonna try again now that Petco is having the 1 gallon, 1 dollar sale lol
Don’t buy from petco please, they neglect their animals and don’t actually care about them.
Here’s something different to make you feel a bit more motivated, I did break my tank
10/10 hands down best review ever of a project ever .
Definitely gonna try this on my 5.5 gallon shrimp tank, just got some giant hair grass in for that tank too
Great video, sub’ed. Will attempt on the 20 longs I just got. Much appreciated
I made a 220 Marineland aquarium rimless the same way. Very nice video by the way.
Great video, Thanks! I got a 46 bow front where the top brace broke. I removed the top trim and plan on adding a glass brace in the center. Is bracing needed on the two sides as well?
Thanks, I was looking for this.
+H.C. Aqua 😉
What is the mm thickness on these Petco rimmed glass? I just got a 20g high and now having 2nd thoughts.
I'd be so afraid to try this!! But great video, I appreciate your attention to detail.
Thank you so much mike I was Loki g for this for the longest time I am derimming a 20 long right now! Like you said though every tank is different as I found out mine was absolutely the worst (R.I.P) sliced my thumb open with a paint scraper but it looks nice hope you check out the tank coming soon!
They look great.
How's the 20 long timeless doing?? I'm thinking of doing this to my aqueon 20 long. I have a broken 10 gal aqueon also that I could cut a brace out from to use for the top of the 20L. I'm still up in the air about it. Suggestions?
You did a really good job removing the rim. Lots of good info. Thanks
+Ruben Thanks Ruben!
Do I need to brace my 29 gallon tall, I just recently removed the rim.
I saw another one of these where the guy was using a hot knife. Creative and effective.
Hey Mike. Thanks for the video. Quick question; have you ever de-rimmed a 75 gal tank before? Would you recommend? I note that in this video you mentioned doing a 55 with a brace, but I'm not sure if you were just referring to 'bracing' or if you meant de-rimming. Thanks. DM~
I did this on a 5 gallon and after step 1 the glass cracked
😂😂
My heart sunk when i cracked my tank doing this
Happened to me too. I have 2 more tries lol.
Cooper McCom same. I just siliconed the piece that broke off back
Same, just a like a really large chip, but either way I started over. That can be my new quarantine tank😂
put few drops of acetone- nail polish remover, to loosen the silicone first.
You guys do know you can heat up a knife and just melt slits in the plastic and pull it off.... Sure you might have to scrape but not as hard....
hey buddy. you can use a proper glazing knife and you wont have to worry about putting stress on the glass. they look like pizza cutters. i use them when cutting glazing on glass window packs when i service vinyl windows.
I usually heat up a box cutter blade and cut through the rim on opposite sides.
Thanks for the tips, I'm going to do this on a 20g. My advise for the razor blades, try using blades for cutting carpet. Imo, their much more sharper and last longer
If I keep the bottom rim, do I still need a brace?
thanks for the video ,i just finished rimless my 10 gallon, and will do for the 20 later.
20tall you think I could do rimless?
@@bettabegoodjr2104 i was planing to do the 20 gal long not the tall one .i guess it is ok but not sure. i think the taller tank needs more thick glass to be safe .
I removed a Zoo med sliding trim. It was plastic coated foam, so it came off in chunks, but fun to do. I did cut myself on the glass when i went to clean it. So i put electrical tape on the edges. I was going to anyway, as i was trying to fit a new cover on it. so for me it didn't need to be cleaned from the silicone. I only needed the painters knife and tape for tools. The glass did not break at all, but it is a large tank, i would say the same size as the video.
I'm considering doing this with a 45 gal corner pentagon tank. How would I brace that? Diagonally from the center of one long side to the center of the other long side? Will the three short sides try to bow as well?
Can't wait for the vid to come out
Awesome Video! Just wondering where you got the glass strip to brace the tank, and what type of silicone do you use?
I’m wondering where I’d get glass for my 50 gal tank to brace too
is it okay if the corner flex a little when you apply pressure?
Sweet Ima try this
Question. for a 40br would you add 1 center brace to the middle or 1 on each end ? like a modified Euro brace? enjoying for videos.
Have you had any bowing in the side panels after taking off the rims in a toughened glass tank? Cool videos. Keep up the good work
Clever idea. I should of done this before I spent $320 dollars on a Landen 30 gallon rimless aquarium. But I have to say I'm really glad I bought it.
I want to make a little desktop paludarium out of my 5.5g, so I definetly do not need a brace at all after I take the rim off?
great video very good information
Tearing apart my 55 gallon making it rimless ! I have to pick up some acrylic to make a brace other then that this was pretty easy !! Take your time !!! Be careful I sliced my finger wide open on some acrylic!! Be done in 3 days hopefully
I have a 10 gallon from Petco that I wanna take the trim off of it. Will it break easier? Like are Petco ones poorly made?
When you have a large tank the rim is very important . I have a 75 and the upper rim snapped in the middle and now the tank is bowing out. Either new rim or discard tank was my option but im interested trying to save it with adding my own structure
I had almost the exact same tank as you, and I realize you said all tanks were different, but this proved to be near impossible.
This guy should do radio! Excellent speaker and very clear voice.
I'm taking the top off of my Fluval Edge 6 gal. Do you think it will make the tank unstable or anything or will it be fine because the tank is so small?
Did this on a 2.5 gallon and when I was on the last corner it cracked
the glass on those is paper thin
TFS this video!
Where would you recommend getting the glass to brace the tank? I am setting up a old 30 gallon I had laying around and like the idea of rimless.
Home depot, lowes, menards, ace hardware, hoods, etc
I'm going to do this to my 10 gallon. I'm going to brace it In the middle like in the video but I'm also going to add little triangle to brace all 4 Corners.
Cool.
How'd that go?
Would this be possible on a 35 bow tank? If i braced the side walls instead of the front and back.
Was that a 20gal tall rimless aquascape at the end of video you did?
Easy peasy! I removed the rim within 5 minutes by first adding an ice cold water, drain the water, then add boiled hot water. This causes the silicone to expand and loosened up the rim. So easy!!😛
I would really like to do a rimless 5 gallon, but I have a cat. Do you recommend something specific for creating a glass lid? What mechanisms should I use for it to rest on top?
Will be enaught eurobrace and two front to back brace to 40 gallon long aquarium?
Thank you so much! I brutally ripped both top and bottom rims right off our 5 gal because I wanted a clean look for a terrarium. Then like magic, our missing frog whom escaped said aquarium 4 months prior appeared in the basement. We assumed one of the 3 dogs or 2 cats got her but nope, she was found hungry n dehydrated but otherwise fine. So now I'm frantically putting together that 5 gal rimless and worried about the bottom rim being necessary for structure.
^lots of words, but mostly just thank you.
i just saw this before garage saleing found a 10 gallon and did this thank you!!
Noticed any bowing? I want to do this but am afraid of that
Sarah Allen no not yet I've done this with a 10 gallon and a 20 long, as long as the tank doesn't have a center brace it is ok to derim
Ok thank you!
Great video! I so want to do this! My water is exceptionally hard and the rim hides water line. Blades don't even touch it! Bar Keepers Friend works like magic but I only use it in an empty tank. Ideas to remove stains around fish?
There's nothing worse than having the same problem as someone and seeing that they found no solution :(
Not sure I would trust doing this for a tank inside the house. Maybe one out in the garage & cement floors. Lol
Have the same tank for 3 years no problems yet going rimless
would a heat gun help with this?
Does anyone know good aquarium shelving for various fish tanks
Why are all the rimless tanks so expensive
They are more expensive because most of the rimless tank have thicker glass.
I bought a 30 gallon tall, frameless aquarium by Aqueon. It doesn’t have a rim on the top, but it does have it on the bottom. Do you think it would be safe to remove the bottom rim?
Thanks, youve made my rim job way easier, I finished pretty quick!! Lol
Where do you get the glass pieces for the braces?
Where can I get the glass cut? I need 3 pieces for my 55 gallon. I got the tank for free which is amazing but the rim was destroyed and I had to remove it. Please let me know because I’d like to order it pretty soon. Thanks for the video! Great quality!!!
i have a 75g can i remove the wood rim if its already sufficiently braced in the middle the glass seems well thick enough
scraping off silicones is easier on you and the blades, if you wet it with a little sopy water and a sponge.
Great video. I have a question, can the brace be plexiglass?
No! Plexi absorbs moisture & warps.
I noticed a lot of the tanks had small chips on the top of the tanks. Is it your experience that all the tanks are like that when you remove the rim?
The backlash is real haha. I converted a 20 long into a rimless. It bows little bit. But not serious enough to worry about. But I am glad I am not the only one who does this haha
Acetone for the thin stuff left after a run with the razor. Give it a try if you're still in the rimless game.
if you heat the paint scraper it will easily cut through the silicone
another question, do you have any pics of the 20 long that you said you had for some years?
do you use black gold potting soil in your tanks?
Actually heating up the top rim with a heat gun or hair dryer loosens up the silicone so it’s easier to remove and scrape off.
it seemed like the bottom rim leaves a gap under the bottom glass. is that normal? my tank has this sort of rim as well and im scared the bottom can crack.
Kopsu I know this comment was from months ago but did you ever set it up? I’m taking off the rim of my 55 gallon and noticed the gap too. Not sure if I should silicone the gap to be safe.
What about scraping off the silicone on the sides where 2 edges of the glass meet is that ok?
Could i do this with a 30 gallon or a 90 gallon
I found this video after doing it myself on a 5 gallon nano. Use a good knife (instead of a putty knife) and cut up through. After that the pieces come off like nothing. Took me 15 minutes doing it my way.
so doing this with a 55 you think i could get away with two braces on the sides and one in the middle?
I have to take off the rim because the clamp from the lamp I bought didn’t fit the tank with the rim
what did you use to soften the load between the bottom glass and the surface it sits on?
+Reid Smith 1/4 in styrofoam
should i brace it if it is a regular 29 gallon?
Hey I hope you can answer this comment and I wanted to ask what should I do because my swordtails are eating my other fish and I don't want this to happen can you give me some advice?
Plz
