One of my friends mixing his colours with his gesso when painting his cosplay stuff and he says it hides the brush strokes and gets a cleaner look (like it's printed). But I would think the white in the gesso would lighten the original colours but he claims this isn't so
It would lighten the color - For example when you add black gesso to white gesso it makes grey gesso ( aka it lightened the color) He must only add a little bit to his mixture 💪

But I am learning what otherwise would have been months/years of trial and error from watching you. The other artists don't share these quick and easy tips. I have picked up some W&N Winton paints in the next town and will now pick up some gesso. With those and other tips I am noting I will show a marked improvement quickly. I should have been painting my whole life, I wish I had those wasted decades back. Thank you.

I’ve seen your videos on liquid white and love your recipe for that. Works great fir my oil paintings Thank you
Hi! Thanks for the video, very informative! I'm really interested in doing some sketching before I come with my acrylic paint, but i'm not sure whats the best approach (i'm new at this!). First of all, I wanna work on a brown stained watercolor paper that i'll stain myself at home (probably using white gesso mixed with burnt umber acrylic paint). My questions are, 1) Do you know if I can use charcoal pencil's as a drawing tool for sketching if i'll be using acrylics on top? If not, what would be best pencil? 2) I was planning on applying 1 or 2 coats of brown gesso, let it dry, sketch on top of it with some pencil, and then apply 1 coat of clear gesso on top of it, so that the sketch marks don't interfere or mix with the acrylic paint. Is that a good plan? Do i need this third coat of clear gesso or is it unnecessary? 3) Is there any better way for me to do all this besides this approach? Sorry for the long comment, Thanks for the video , take care!
I dont do any sketching but I can help: 1 & 3) If you plan on painting on top of your sketch you will need to use a Fixative Spray ( like this for example: amzn.to/2Ux94iR ) This will prevent smearing when your hands, wrists, forearms, and brushes touch the sketch.... This will work for both charcoal and graphite. 2) You wouldn't really need the 3rd layer unless you wanted a super smooth canvas ( Thats up to you and your style) - Best advice is try both and see what you like more.
I just was told what gesso is and your video has given me the info I need to make my decision, I do have a question for you. I seal all of my paintings after they are done, I used mod podge to seal the painting after. Would using the gesso and then painting over it, and then putting mod podge ontop effect anything? I usually use a glossy mod podge to make it shine
Gesso will only help with the painting process and adhesion to surfaces... So for example... if you wanted to paint on a slippery surface like metal, porcelain, ECT. You can put a layer or two of gesso, let it dry then paint on top of that. This way you paint has something to grab. Then you can seal after the paint is dry - Hope that helps.
Is this why I’m having such a hard time with my acrylic on canvas? Slips and slides everywhere and won’t blend. Then my second coats pull the dried paint off the canvas. Also what should I clear with. I prefer a spray can clear bcs I’m an autobody painter and artist, I also feel I’d pull paint and smear it if I clear with a brush. I’m using sax heavy body. I’m new to canvas but I’m a long time airbrush artist.
If your acrylics are not blending and not sticking to your canvas then it sounds like you have bad acrylics. Acrylic paints are generally smooth and blend very easy. If you need a clear coat, add varnish when its dry.
Wild Creates thanks..... the brand paint is sax and it’s not bad in my opinion. I’m sure my technique is a factor too bcs a pro can still do better then me with these paints I have. I’m going to post a vid of three paintings I did and maybe you’ll find them interesting bcs I’m using my 20 yrs of painting cars to pull this project off.
Hi I’m new to this type of painting and a little confused so doing wet on wet do you cover initially with Gesso and then cover with a Magic white as a combination or either one on it’s own? Please advise your help would be appreciated! Regards Ron
No Problem Ron - I Got you! You want to apply the gesso to your canvas first, then let it dry completely. Once dry you can then add your liquid base ( aka Liquid or Magic White ). Once you put on a nice thin layer... you are ready to paint. If you are just starting out I have the perfect 2 videos for you that will help you a ton. Check them out below: -Getting Started: ua-cam.com/video/AnGE7AYu9RY/v-deo.html -Building Layers: ua-cam.com/video/YNhIQSaECeI/v-deo.html
Double check - But when I use to use Kilz on my home projects it has additives in it (like odor eaters, sealers, ETC) - They can have adverse affects on certain paint adhesions.
Can you please confirm if I have the following correct? Please/thank you. On a regular canvas from Hobby Lobby and using acrylic paint: 1) brush on Acrylic Gesso white, let dry 2) brush on liquid first coat (clear oil color), let dry. 3) brush on transparent color and pattern of choice, let set for a few minutes. 4) paint. Does that sound correct? I appreciate you.
For wet on wet style of painting: 1) Paint on Gesso let it dry 2) Apply Liquid clear coat (can start painting right away) 3) Apply color paint for art piece
When you say: "3) apply color for art peice" do you mean add color to the clear coat, as in transparent color that I will paint over and get that varied color change? Like Bob Ross?
Wondering how this would apply to my own art. I clean rocks and stones, and then cover them in craft resin. I then use acrylic pens to write or draw, while keeping the whole of the stone unpainted. I then ModPodge the paint after drying, and finally covering the whole stone again in craft resin. I am about to try using acrylic paint rather than acrylic pens. Since the paint is being applied to resin, I am wondering if I would need Gesso at all? What do you think?
hmmm perhaps it would help BUT hard to tell without seeing the final result. I saw the rock video on your channel (but I still unclear if that is the final result too ) Can your DM me on twitter or IG a reference and I could give you better feedback
Not a dumb question at all. Now let me answer your dumb question he he he. You can use it as a sub ( and it can work great ) HOWEVER there are some differences. I actually talk about it in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/vIl1gV8pkyM/v-deo.html I hope that helps
you can if you want - adding Linseed Oil will increase the flow of your paint and also my it more fatty. Allowing it to stick to other paints I hope that helps.
You will have to touch and test it - If it was a cheaper canvas you most likely will ( since the coating will be sparse). If it was more expensive, You are more likely good. But always double check for your needs.
Hi, I want to learn the wet on wet style of oil painting as a hobby and have never painted before. I understand for white canvases I would apply gesso, wait for it to dry then apply liquid white as the base coat. However, I want to paint night time paintings as well. So for that do I first apply black gesso, wait for it to fully dry then apply liquid clear as the base coat or would I apply liquid white then midnight black after the gesso dries?
Black gesso the canvas ( let it dry completely ) then add a nice thing layer of liquid clear ( you only need a little, its spreads easily) Then paint on your transparent colors. Now you are ready to paint your light and more opaque colors on top to get awesome effects
HI! WAS wondering I bought BOB R gray gesso , can I add acrylic black paint to it use black ink ? to make black gesso ? Also I have the Liquid Black oil paint bottle from BR ,that is just to tint the canvas black, but it is not Gesso ? or can I put this in white gesso to make Black gesso ????? Just beginning my BOB Ross journey,so it is a bit confusing. Thank you so much for your videos! 2021 is your year ? as you said it before ???? I really hope soo, cause you are such a Great help for your viewers😁
OIl and acrylic don't mix when wet. You can add any acrylic paint to gesso ( if that is what you are asking) this is called tinting your gesso and many artist do this. If you want to make black gesso - It's best just to buy a cheap bottle of it off amazon... or your can also use black acrylic if you have it. That will do in a pinch.
@@WildCreates Yes I have big bottle of Grey BR , white (Mont Marte brand, )but no black gesso, so if I put black acrylic paint to my white or grey gesso , It will work to make Black gesso or can I had liquitex carbon black acrylic ink ? to make more black ? Thank you so much for answering so fast , you are such a Great teacher Amazing soul!
I would add the black acrylic to your grey gesso to get it "close" to black. I have never worked with "acrylic ink". So not sure how it would bond or turn out.
You can for gouache for different effects and styles. For watercolor normally NO. But you might be able too for certain styles. I don't work in watercolor. So you might want to ask another artist or do some research.
I'm looking for some good acrylic gesso for canvases(I want to paint over old things but I don't know if I need gesso prime), and wood painting. I don't wanna sand it down. The student-grade seems good for me, and I've seen Daler Rowney acrylic gesso in store. Should I use that?
The Liquitex BASICS Gesso (White): amzn.to/2NEnVFC works great - But if you are painting over something you made need to do two or 3 coats. I hope that helps you out :)
Do you have a video on Gesso and sand prep? I am totally new to acrylic painting (thanks to quarantine) and am relying on UA-cam to show me what to do and how to do it. Not sure when or if I should do a gesso sand prep, but would like to learn about it regardless. Also, I would like to add some color to the Gesso so I don't have a stark white canvas, is there a ratio of Gesso to acrylic paint? And lastly, the girl at the art store talked me into buying paper (yeah yeah 🙄) ... do I gesso the paper (paper not cotton) or is Gesso just for canvas? Love your videos; thanks so much!!!
- I dont have one on a sand prep but I will see what I can do in a future video for ya. - You can add as much color as you want to gesso but to start I would ya no more than 1 part color to 3 parts gesso. Start there and build up. - If the paper is already gessoed then you shouldn't have too.... if its not, then YEAH I would :)
I use white gesso as a primer on my canvases for my acrylic paintings. What type of grit sand paper should I use sand down the white gesso on Canvases?
There is no real answer here, it depends on how much texture you want or how smooth you want your painting surface. I only sand mine when I want it smooth, for that I use 320 and 600 grit ( But that's just me). I would say buy a few sheets ( they don't cost a lot ) and test it out to see what you like or what works for your style. Hope that helps some
- Gesso First - Then let it dry ( you can repeat as many times as you want, its up to you and your style) - Then Add Liquid White, ( Nice thing Layer ) - Thats It.
This video explains what gesso is and what it does. But you can watch this video on what LW is and how it helps: ua-cam.com/video/a6Iov7iR82I/v-deo.html
Depending on what you mean by seal....It might not seal it completely. It will add a good top coat for you to paint on top of later ( if that is what you are planning ). Since I am not 100% sure what you will be doing I say test it on a smaller piece and see if it accomplishes what you want. My feeling is you will be completely fine with Gesso BUT always good to test. Good luck and let me know how it goes... Sounds like an awesome art piece.
@@WildCreates Thanks! I meant 'seal' as in preventing the plastering from cracking, which I've seen by reading other people's comments that this can happen when trying to structure your canvas
That I wouldn't know sadly - I have only worked a handful of times in plaster. If i could toss how a suggestion... perhaps heavy body gesso would be perfect for you. Its thick, which would seal harder ( once dry ) and you can sand paper it into what ever shapes you want.
This is a weird question for you- if I were to put a few coats (at least) of gesso on cornhole boards, could I do wet on wet Bob Ross paintings on them?
Corn hole Master Here :) Yes you could however I dont think the oil paint would hold up will under repeated hits from bags being tossed at it UNLESS you put a protect coat on it after. But then you fun the risk of your bags sliding off. I would defiantly to a test to see what works Best.
@@WildCreates ahhh good point about them sliding off. Clearly didn't get that far when thinking through this. My bro gave me a set he was going to throw away (crazy, right?) so maybe I'll give it a go by doing a very thick seal and then sanding and roughing it up. Thanks so much for your reply! If it works, you'll have to do your own set and we can have a Bob Ross Cornhole tournament.
ahh great videos! actually, I have a few questions regarding to gesso and it would mean a lot if you answer: - how long I have to wait for acrylic gesso to dry between coats before applying another coat? - after the gesso layer dries, can I paint it right away or do I need to wait a few hours/day before I start working on my acrylic painting? - and also, how to clean the brush used for gesso? is using soap and water enough? thanks in advance! 🖤
Glad I can help you out. 1) Normally you can between 20 to 20 mins BUT each manufacture is a little different (plus weather can play a factor) - So give it the finger test before applying next coat 2) You can paint on it right away once it is dry. 3) Gesso cleans up easily with dawn dish soap and water. Hope that helps - Happy painting!
This video will give you a little more information on it: ua-cam.com/video/vIl1gV8pkyM/v-deo.html But in short: Liquid mediums are paints that stay wet for a long time. Allowing you to mix colors on the canvas.
I have actually used Bobs grey gesso, because of your other video where I saw you mixing black and white ..I’m ultra lazy lol. Kidding aside unless I want liquid white on top and liquid clear on the bottom ..of the canvas i grey gesso everything even canvas paper ..
It really depends on your style of painting. For me personally I would. Gessoing would allow my colors and paints to spread further and more naturally on the canvas. Making it easier to blend and make gradients. BUT again thats just my personal approach.
Can I add water to dilute my gesso and make it flow easier and spread across my canvas? The gesso I purchased is really thick. If I cannot use water to dilute it, what other medium would you suggest I use to make my gesso more runny?
You most likely bought heavy body gesso, which is an awesome product but too thick for wet on wet painting. Use the links in the video description for a normal gesso that will work perfect for ya. I have never tried to water down gesso cause I own multiple versions for me needs - It may work but it might also weaken the gesso adhesion.
Hello Wild Creates. I have a question. I have bought 2 jars of gesso. 1 in white and 1 in Black. On the website were i bought them its says they are universel gesso,s. Can i put the gesso on my canvas board, spread it out and paint whit acrylic paint or is it just for oil? I don,t know. Greetings from the netherlands my name is parna Donkers
Yes you can BUT you have to use it first before you start painting with oil. Do what you need to do with the acrylic paint, let it dry. Then you can use oil Paint on top of it. Hope that helps.
Yes you can - I talk a little more about it in this video here ( ua-cam.com/video/AnGE7AYu9RY/v-deo.html ) just sub out the grey gesso for black here :)
OH man that stinks BUT I am glad that you found a solution that works for you. I will try to think of some other video ideas that will help you out in the future :)
@@WildCreates yeah plz ..I m a single mom n not rich lol I can't afford so OK for me but if someone can afford so I will tell them plz buy n use ...Happy painting ..blessings From Pakistan
I cannot tell exactly but like chemical products. Anyways thanks a lot for your answer, now I know that there is something wrong with the gesso I bought. Thanks, by the way I love your videos.
Glad to help - I would say buy a small bottle of the Bob Ross or Liquitex paint and compare it with what you got and see if there is a difference. Happy painting :)
Why don't they make canvas / paint surfaces that are flat (like the canvas + gesso)??? Surely they wouldn't make canasses the way they do, if canvasses are bad to paint on without gesso??? I am so confused.
Canvases come in all different shapes, sizes and styles for different types of art and artist. So if you want one that is "flat" do some research and find which is best for your needs. This canvas might interest you: ua-cam.com/video/dTJiizNOm3E/v-deo.html
There are different versions of gesso.... Thick is more for sanding down to make a smooth surface to paint on. You can use it as is.... it will just leave a little texture to your canvas.
That I can't answer because it depends on the wall material and the style of art you are going for 9 times out of 10 normal gesso will do. But if you are going to do a mural I would test first to be safe :)
@@WildCreates it'll be a while still before I have the stills to paint something like that.... Thanks for the content homie...... I've been playing X-Dive on my phone a bit lately
Gesso has always ruined my collages🤦♀️ I don’t know if the one I have isn’t a good one but I like to rub it around the edges of my paper on my collage to blend in but, it looks awful! Do you think I should mix it with pouring paint mix or something?
@@WildCreates yes agreed I’ve stopped using it, it’s just that someone on UA-cam used it around the edges of her collage work and it looked nice , I did it and it looked wrong🤷♀️
I would like to ask if you might know why after i applied gesso it cracked,i did like 3 layers on wood and i waited after each layer for it to dry and it still cracked (i use maimeri gesso)
It could be a few things like heat or style of gesso you bought ( like heavy body gesso ) - You may wanna try to a more universal brand of gesso ( like liquitex basics - links in my video below) or you can try thinning your gesso with a tiny bit of water.... tiny bit )
Sandy yes (because it has grit in it) Dusty NO... sounds like the clothes or your environment needs to be cleaned a little. Also, please note gesso doesn't flex. So if you plan on wearing the clothes is will crack. You will want to use a different medium if you plan to wear..
@@WildCreates thank you so much for replying. I won't be wearing it, I'm making a fabric book, but even though I applied clear gesso on it, the paint still leaks onto the other side.
You might have to use a few layers or gesso OR I can't remember what number it is - But look for a product from Golden called "GAC" its like GAC 600 of GAC 900.... something like that
Yes - But you may have to add a coat of gesso so the board doesn't absorb all the liquid/paint. I would also only use the boards for practice only.... but thats just me :)
Yes you can BUT you may not like the finish it has when it dries. If you can, find a white acrylic paint that matches your style and texture for your paint
They do - However, on cheaper to medium canvases. The gesso coating can be sparse or very thin. You will kinda learn in time which canvases are good for your style. Until then, I recommend an extra gesso coating
Bruh! That piece, with the clouds over your left shoulder...is that the background of the Safier Sephiroth battle in FF7? I only ask because of the Mega-man painting, and Mech paintings (possibly Voltron or Gundam) allude to a connection. If so.... Right on.
Nah its not ha ha ha However.... that would be super dope. It was just a painting I did for fun. I am a huge mega man fan and all the MM art was done by friends that sent it to me as gifts. I am only a landscape painter and acrylic pour painter.
You can do that too - But you will need to check and test the chalk paint first. Since the home and house paint can had additives and may function differently with other artist paints. You also might not be able to sand some house paints BUT you can gesso.

I don't like the fact that you show so many Bob Ross products. The line of products are too expensive especially for someone starting out. I have been painting for many years and I still wouldn't buy Bob Ross products. I always enjoyed his videos but many of the reviews on the background and blender brushes are not good. The ones made in Germany are said to be junk. The bristles fray and the white coating on the brushes chip off. No one wants to spend $$$$ on that. Your tips are good but please stop talking about Bob Ross products.
Just because I recommend or suggest BR products doesn't mean you have to go that route. Everyone can venture off and try budget friendly or expensive. I am just giving my own opinion and feedback from my experiences. You even know this since you already watched and and commented on my "Cheap DIY Painting Kit" video.
@@WildCreates I am very much aware that I don't have to "go that route". It's just that you are recommending Bob Ross products while simultaneously showing new painters how to save money by buying inexpensive materials. Not everyone can afford to purchase Bob Ross products and if I was just starting out as a student painter I would feel overwhelmed. Some people think they can't be good at anything unless they buy the best and most expensive supplies. How many people have tried learning to play the guitar, bought an expensive instrument then gave up. Now the guitar sits in the closet.
Not everyone can afford to by Cheap, Budget Friendly, Expensive or Professional either so your point sadly is invalid. Like I said before, all I can give is my own opinion and feedback from my experiences. Take from it what you want and apply to your specific needs and talents. If you have an issue with that, then my videos are not for you. If you have an issues with BR products now ( which aren't even considers high end nor super expensive), wait til we talk about non-student grade paints and supplies 😂

Correct.... the more Coats or more Prime-ing will fill in the toothing on the canvas and make it less porous - Hence the paint will flow more :)

My partially informed opinion is regular PVA (ph neutral) is fine for sizing, just needs to be watered down.

I dont do any sketching but I can help:
1 & 3) If you plan on painting on top of your sketch you will need to use a Fixative Spray ( like this for example: amzn.to/2Ux94iR ) This will prevent smearing when your hands, wrists, forearms, and brushes touch the sketch.... This will work for both charcoal and graphite.

I am glad that I can help you out on your creative adventures
💪
I am from India too
I just was told what gesso is and your video has given me the info I need to make my decision, I do have a question for you.
So i buy a primed canvass, then coat that canvass with gesso, then wait to dry, then coat canvass with liquid white, then im good to go?
Bingo... You got it buddy :)
Should you gesso a canvas (for acrylic painting) that has already been primed when purchased?
If you want a smoother surface and more paint flow YES - But its really up to you and what you want.
Love the video, shared it on my twiter hope it helps can't wait to see the next video!!
I am glad the video helped - Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it :)
Check them out below:
-Getting Started: ua-cam.com/video/AnGE7AYu9RY/v-deo.html
-Building Layers: ua-cam.com/video/YNhIQSaECeI/v-deo.html
Love Gesso . I use it for silhouettes or Mountain bases.
It is awesome for silhouettes - The deep dense black works perfect for it 💪
Thank you for your video. Artists use Gesso for priming the board. But why can't you use waterbased Kilz instead?
Double check - But when I use to use Kilz on my home projects it has additives in it (like odor eaters, sealers, ETC) - They can have adverse affects on certain paint adhesions.
Can you please confirm if I have the following correct? Please/thank you.
On a regular canvas from Hobby Lobby and using acrylic paint:
1) brush on Acrylic Gesso white, let dry
2) brush on liquid first coat (clear oil color), let dry.
3) brush on transparent color and pattern of choice, let set for a few minutes.
4) paint.
Does that sound correct?
I appreciate you.
For wet on wet style of painting:
1) Paint on Gesso let it dry
2) Apply Liquid clear coat (can start painting right away)
3) Apply color paint for art piece
When you say: "3) apply color for art peice" do you mean add color to the clear coat, as in transparent color that I will paint over and get that varied color change? Like Bob Ross?
Color = your oil paint colors
Wondering how this would apply to my own art. I clean rocks and stones, and then cover them in craft resin. I then use acrylic pens to write or draw, while keeping the whole of the stone unpainted. I then ModPodge the paint after drying, and finally covering the whole stone again in craft resin. I am about to try using acrylic paint rather than acrylic pens. Since the paint is being applied to resin, I am wondering if I would need Gesso at all? What do you think?
hmmm perhaps it would help BUT hard to tell without seeing the final result. I saw the rock video on your channel (but I still unclear if that is the final result too )
Can your DM me on twitter or IG a reference and I could give you better feedback
This may be a stupid question, I'm not sure, but can you not use acrylic paint as a substitute for jesso?
Not a dumb question at all. Now let me answer your dumb question he he he.
You can use it as a sub ( and it can work great ) HOWEVER there are some differences. I actually talk about it in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/vIl1gV8pkyM/v-deo.html
I hope that helps
Great video! Very helpful, thank you :) I bought a bottle of gesso last week and I'm going to use it on my next acrylic painting
Nice - I am sure it will help you out.
Let me know how it goes for ya, when you have a chance to play with it.
Do I need to still use my linseed oil when blending if I’ve applied gesso already?
you can if you want - adding Linseed Oil will increase the flow of your paint and also my it more fatty. Allowing it to stick to other paints
I hope that helps.
Found some grey Bob Ross Gesso on amazon. So instead of buying white and adding pigments, I'd go with the grey one directly. Is it a good idea?
Grey is perfectly fine to use :)
Novice question, I bought triple primed gesso Canvases from Amazon, do I still need to paint a layer of gesso on them? Thank you
You will have to touch and test it - If it was a cheaper canvas you most likely will ( since the coating will be sparse).
I learned the most from your responses to the comments. I was impressed to see you answered every one. Good job!!
Thanks! I am a beginner
Glad I can help you out buddy - Good Luck on your painting adventures :)
I use watercolour and gouache on watercolour paper do I still need to use gesso 😗
Wild Creates Thanks man! I'll be sure to get one!
Cool buddy - let me know how it works out for ya :)
When you say adding pigment to the gesso, are you referring to adding acrylic paint color or oil color etc. or is there an actual tint that you buy?
In this case YES... just add a little bit of acrylic color and BOOM you are ready to tone your canvas.
@@WildCreates Thanks so much!
Glad to help :)
Hope that helps some
Haha Bob Ross! I needed that, great video!
Glad you liked it!

Do you put the liquid white or gesso first on the canvas and how many layers of liquid white and gesso
- Gesso First - Then let it dry ( you can repeat as many times as you want, its up to you and your style)
- Then Add Liquid White, ( Nice thing Layer )
- Thats It.
so, what is the difference between liquid white and Gesso? are they the same thing?
This video explains what gesso is and what it does. But you can watch this video on what LW is and how it helps: ua-cam.com/video/a6Iov7iR82I/v-deo.html

I´m making a piece structured canvas with wall plaster. Can I put gesso on top and will it act like a sealer in that case?
Corn hole Master Here :)
Yes you could however I dont think the oil paint would hold up will under repeated hits from bags being tossed at it UNLESS you put a protect coat on it after.
Let me know how it goes :)
ahh great videos! actually, I have a few questions regarding to gesso and it would mean a lot if you answer:
- how long I have to wait for acrylic gesso to dry between coats before applying another coat?
- after the gesso layer dries, can I paint it right away or do I need to wait a few hours/day before I start working on my acrylic painting?
- and also, how to clean the brush used for gesso? is using soap and water enough?
thanks in advance! 🖤
Glad I can help you out.
1) Normally you can between 20 to 20 mins BUT each manufacture is a little different (plus weather can play a factor) - So give it the finger test before applying next coat
2) You can paint on it right away once it is dry.
3) Gesso cleans up easily with dawn dish soap and water.
Hope that helps - Happy painting!
Wild Creates thank you so much for this! I really appreciate it! can’t wait to start painting once all my supplies are here :)
Glad to help - In the comment before I meant to type 10 to 20 mins - Hope that is more clear ha ha ha
What’s the difference between white gesso and liquid white?(Also black gesso and liquid black)
This video will give you a little more information on it: ua-cam.com/video/vIl1gV8pkyM/v-deo.html
But in short: Liquid mediums are paints that stay wet for a long time. Allowing you to mix colors on the canvas.
Can I paint a clear gesso on an already started painting?
Yes provided your not painting on top of oil paint - Otherwise it will crack off in time
Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to find info on this very thing! You explained it really good! I appreciate it more than you know!
I am glad that I could help you out and give you answers.
Happy Painting!
I have actually used Bobs grey gesso, because of your other video where I saw you mixing black and white ..I’m ultra lazy lol. Kidding aside unless I want liquid white on top and liquid clear on the bottom ..of the canvas i grey gesso everything even canvas paper ..
Lazy painter best painter he he he.
Gesso is a powerful tool and every painter should use it when they painting calls for it 💪
Would you still gesso a pre-primed canvas for acrylic painting?
@@WildCreates Thank you for the reply and the advice! Really appreciate it :)
I am glad I can help out
Hello wild creates. If i mix my white gesso whit mars Black acrylic paint does the gesso still does its work ?
That will work - It might some out a tad shinny but will do in a pinch
Thanks. I will try it have a nice day👋🏼
Hello Wild Creates.
Oil and acrylic paint will be just fine painting on top of gesso.
Happy painting.
Thank you Wild Creates
You are welcome
I bought acrylic gesso , can i use it for oil painting?
Yes you can BUT you have to use it first before you start painting with oil.
Do what you need to do with the acrylic paint, let it dry. Then you can use oil Paint on top of it.
Hope that helps.
Can you use arylic black paint and have the same results 🤔
Yes you can - I talk a little more about it in this video here ( ua-cam.com/video/AnGE7AYu9RY/v-deo.html ) just sub out the grey gesso for black here :)
Gesso is expensive in my country 😥 so I Started making my own lol

Thanks a lot, I used gesso for the first time but it has a horrible smell, is that normal? How can I make it desappear?
Thank you
It should smell kinda like glue and acrylic paint. What does your smell like
I cannot tell exactly but like chemical products.
This canvas might interest you: ua-cam.com/video/dTJiizNOm3E/v-deo.html
the liquitex gesso I got is REALLY thick. Use as is? or thin it?
There are different versions of gesso.... Thick is more for sanding down to make a smooth surface to paint on. You can use it as is.... it will just leave a little texture to your canvas.
Is gesso better or mod podge better?
They are two different products.... Mod Podge is more classified as a glue. Both are great products though for art.
Nice video presentation.
Thanks - I am glad you could enjoy the video :)
Can u put gesso on a wall for a mural?
Yes you can 👍
@@WildCreates should I go with heavy or clear gesso for my wall if I’m doing 3 walls worth of
That I can't answer because it depends on the wall material and the style of art you are going for 9 times out of 10 normal gesso will do. But if you are going to do a mural I would test first to be safe :)
@@WildCreates figured out it’s not wood it’s Sheetrock would the gesso still work or on it?

Gesso has always ruined my collages🤦♀️ I don’t know if the one I have isn’t a good one but I like to rub it around the edges of my paper on my collage to blend in but, it looks awful! Do you think I should mix it with pouring paint mix or something?
Why are you using gesso and not something lime Modpodge? That seems like It might be more useful for ya.
ModPodge: amzn.to/3c6uSf7
@@WildCreates yes agreed I’ve stopped using it, it’s just that someone on UA-cam used it around the edges of her collage work and it looked nice , I did it and it looked wrong🤷♀️
They could have been using heavy-body gesso OR perhaps they thinned it down with some water... Who knows :P
i use liquitex grey gesso....before putting in the liquid white
Grey gesso is the best
I would like to ask if you might know why after i applied gesso it cracked,i did like 3 layers on wood and i waited after each layer for it to dry and it still cracked (i use maimeri gesso)
It could be a few things like heat or style of gesso you bought ( like heavy body gesso ) - You may wanna try to a more universal brand of gesso ( like liquitex basics - links in my video below) or you can try thinning your gesso with a tiny bit of water.... tiny bit )
Hello, is it normal that after applying gesso on a fabric, it’s sandy and dusty???
Sandy yes (because it has grit in it) Dusty NO... sounds like the clothes or your environment needs to be cleaned a little.
Also, please note gesso doesn't flex. So if you plan on wearing the clothes is will crack. You will want to use a different medium if you plan to wear..
@@WildCreates thank you so much for replying. I won't be wearing it, I'm making a fabric book, but even though I applied clear gesso on it, the paint still leaks onto the other side.
You might have to use a few layers or gesso
OR
I can't remember what number it is - But look for a product from Golden called "GAC" its like GAC 600 of GAC 900.... something like that
Can you use the wet on wet technique on an illustration board ?
Yes - But you may have to add a coat of gesso so the board doesn't absorb all the liquid/paint.
I would also only use the boards for practice only.... but thats just me :)
@@WildCreates thank you for helping
Glad to help you out :)
I have a question, can I use gesso as a substitute of white paint?
Yes you can BUT you may not like the finish it has when it dries. If you can, find a white acrylic paint that matches your style and texture for your paint
@@WildCreates alr tysm!! :D
don't canvases usually have gesso on them? Will it improve it to add more?
They do - However, on cheaper to medium canvases. The gesso coating can be sparse or very thin. You will kinda learn in time which canvases are good for your style. Until then, I recommend an extra gesso coating
@@WildCreates Ok thank you. May do that.

I use gesso when I paint something that I don't like. I just cover the ugly painting with a couple layers of gesso and start over.
That is the perfect way to practice 🔥🔥🔥
Why but actual gesso when the chalk based paint sold by Walmart and other stores will work as a form of gesso for a possibly cheaper amount.
You can do that too - But you will need to check and test the chalk paint first. Since the home and house paint can had additives and may function differently with other artist paints. You also might not be able to sand some house paints BUT you can gesso.
hello this is a great video. can i apply gesso on top of an oil painting? i want to reuse the canvas but idk if i can

Do you use gesso when doing acrylic pouring?
Depends on what style of pour I am doing. If I want the paint to slide more then YES, I will use it.
Can you paint the gesso over an existing oil painting to reuse a canvas?
You can but it is not recommended because of weak paint adhesion ( They paint will fake off or fall off at some point )

If you love Bob Ross, never buy Bob Ross brand. The owners are snakes.
If you are interested in BRI alternatives I have a bunch on them. Like the one below:

Could you please drop the American accent
Not sure what you mean - I am American 😂
That music you picked in the background is atrocious.
Gotta love the UA-cam Copywrite free music 👌
