    I so wish I had caught in to this about 20+ years ago, but better late than never. Enough. It's a good word.

    I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book as well. At 70 years old I am really focused on decluttering. Since I like classic mid-century modern I already have less, but there are books from my retired English professor husband! Slowly, but steadily he is purging. It was his idea as he watched me going through years of sentimental items neatly stashed in closets. While organized, these items served no purpose for us. I am using the items I love now rather than hiding them away and donating other treasures (I have made peace with the idea that ALL of my beloved grandmother’s table linens did not have to be saved,) I enjoy your channel and look forward to the motivating messages.

      Thank you! I wish you luck and joy in your decluttering process, I know how hard it can be.

    Me and my boyfriend invested in a very high quality sofa with a 10 year warranty. Its small but the one we bought comes from a company where you can buy custom extebtions to your sofa. So you can start with what you can afford and then expand

    I guess I would agree with the author all the way, too. I love my cozy, uncluttered furniture so much, it shows my personality with all the details and is just cozy - feeling like our unique home.

    You just motivated me to read my signed copy of soulful simplicity! Courtney came to San Diego not too long ago...I’m way too busy to read, but it’s been on my bedside table long enough now...no more excuses!

    I think that I disagree about the couch. If you had small boys jumping all over a very expensive couch, it would also be ruined in short order. AND you would be out of a lot more money. I think that you guys were smart to buy a cheap couch.

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  4 роки тому +2

      You are probably right about the way the couch situation worked out for us, I just wish it was more comfortable LOL. Sometimes my husband sits on the floor because the couch is so bad it hurts his back 😂

      @@shannontorrens1 You guys should buy yourselves a couple of matching recliner armchairs a la Joey and Chandler style. The kids can have the couch 👌😄

    I think the book is available in Germany, too... maybe I will look in the library for it. Well, my style is not minimal - my lifestyle is. I always have a lot of color. In the Living room there are Green stripes, the bedroom is a light violet, the toy room green. We firstly thought about the colors of our furniture and then painted and still feel good after five years. Only the toy room, which used to be a office with whitefurniture is now to colorful in my opinion when there are the colorful toys and other things of my little one. But we plan to move this year, so we won’t change it for now. Our furniture is mostly wooden, so you can fix them easily. My recommendation for good furniture is to buy Second Hand. Often you can change the old, maybe to dark furniture easily, because it is good quality and can be redone often.

    I got to read this book! The “paint last” idea makes so much sense.

    Sounds like a great book! I am a minimalist and have rubbed off on my kids. My husband not so much, so I like to make our home cozy for him. In a way that I can handle though. Plants, family pictures on the wall, and pillows or blankets I can easily tuck away in an ottoman so I don't have to see them all the time. It's about what works for us. I love these homes that are white with light furniture, etc...but it just doesn't work in every room of our home. That's ok with me as long as our home feels comfortable for everyone.

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  4 роки тому +1

      Yes! I feel the same way, I love the white furniture too, but with my family it would never work. It sounds like you have made your home work for everyone. 💛

    The painting was my biggest take away as well. This year we are redoing our bedroom and are focusing on the main focal points of the room such as the bed spread, head board, rug and curtains before we even think of paint. I already have my large pieces of art picked out to inspire the rest.

    • @shannontorrens1

      I love the paint idea too. It sounds like your room is going to look amazing.

    Lots of great tips! I'm conflicted about the couch, I agree you don't want to go to cheap but I also can't help but wonder if you spent a lot on a couch with the intent to keep it for 20 years if you would still like it in 20 years...

    I did not have time to read the book. Thank you for going over it. Not sure how I feel about painting with all of your furniture already in. Since I don't care for different colors on walls throughout the house; We have found it much easier to paint when the rooms are empty; instead of having to push them to the middle and cover.

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  4 роки тому

      I think if you are painting a very neutral color then this rule doesn't really apply, but for a bold color it made sense to me. I think to when we painted our old kitchen teal, I was thankful I had everything in that room already picked out so I knew I would like the added bright color. 😀👍

    I like the plant holder you hanged on the right side of the door, did you make yourself? I would love to have one!!! I will search this book, see if I can find it here in Italy!! You made me very curious 😊

    I like the book so far (just part way through) can relate a lot to her story. We used to live in a bigger home 2600 sq ft and have downsized to 1800 sq ft. We still have plenty of room for what we want and need but not unneeded spaces and clutter. We moved to a more rural area and have a bigger yard but more peace in our lives

    I think I need to get the book again. I listened to it on audio. Looks like it has nice photos in it. I liked the book bc it love decor so it was a way to incorporate it but minimally. I hate Knick knacks and clutter though.

    • @shannontorrens1
      @shannontorrens1  4 роки тому +1

      I know! The knick knacks are such a problem, really anything small for decor never looks good in our house. I think her blog has a lot of decor inspiration too.

    Somehow I missed that you were reading this book because I would have read it with you! It’s on my list for sure. The one you’re reading now by C. Carver, I’ve already read before. I’m curious what you think about it. On another note, I was watching your video when I got the notification that you liked my story reply on IG. Ha! How is that baby’s face? Is he sore today? 😢

      Oh sorry you missed the notification I was reading this. I have started the Soulful Simplicity and I already like it a lot. My poor boy is slowly recovering! His face is a mess, but at least there was no permanent damage. Thank you for thinking of us.

    This makes me so impatient to read the book now! I'm still on the library waiting list LOL - I'll probably end up buying the Kindle ebook which is cheaper than buying the hard copy. I haven't yet, because I have a few books on Kindle that I still need to read 😄

    • @shannontorrens1
