I am going to do this now that i have simplified all my clothes into one closet! So proud of all the onion peeling i have done hehehehhe Dawn do you mind sharing the amazon link for the black tshirt you mentioned in one of your videos that you also have in green? Thanks so much! And again another amazing video!!
I have simplified a little bit, but after this video...I am going to do it again. I already have items in quarantine, and I think it's time to get rid of those. I truly only wear 5 or 6 shirts in my closet and about 4 of my house shirts. I won't even discuss pants. 🤫 I have fluctuated from a small to an extra large over the last few years...back and forth. Trying this time around to stick to a healthy life style (it's been a year and a half, but still fluctuate between med and large.) Thank you for this encouraging video.
I just discovered you after watching your sister's bathroom makeover. You and your husband are adorable and you have a lot of great tips that I've been living by for quite some time. One suggestion: consider finding an alternative to saying "I feel like...". I lost count after about 15 times and it can be a distracting habit. Otherwise, I'm enjoying your channel and look forward to seeing more. 🙂
Truer words were never spoken. You already have a minimalist wardrobe. You got to the core of the problem. Personally, I like neutral colors to wear and then shoes, bags and accessories. Easier to manage, dress and shop.
I always remember so fondly when I moved to the UK from Australia for a working holiday when I was 20. I had 1 large suitcase and a carry on bag. Those contained all of my possessions, including clothes, shoes, accessories etc. It was a true capsule wardrobe. I went to the laundry mat only once a week. Life was so much simpler and many times I’ve reminisced about how living out of a suit a case made life simple. This video has inspired me to simplify my wardrobe once again and regain that peace I once had all those years ago.
This is so helpful, Dawn! I tend to operate on a "Depression Era" mindset. I better save everything in case I lose the option of buying/obtaining more. It's time to let that go!
Interesting comment. With me i avoided/ preserved a new polo neck long sleeved offwhite light sweater for months, Finally when I started using it , it felt like a burdens been lifted.
I too got it from my grandma, and mother, who lived through that era. I hate that bondage that it creates its fear which I am throwing away don't need it any more. I choose happiness ,joy and peace in my life.
Yes, the depression era mentality combined with fat/skinny clothes idea. Also, "save those tops for your cousin...she may need them when she gets a job."
I decluttered my side of the closet months back. My husband said I made his side look bad so then he decluttered his. Now it's so nice. I told my mother in law and she said she doesn't know how I did it. Lol!
I cleaned out my clothes and mentioned to my fiancé that I had a bunch of stuff with holes, stains or just didn’t fit that I was getting rid of. He had a “me too” moment and threw all the stuff he had on the bed. At least half our closet got emptied from that alone. And I didn’t even have to bug him about it!
I love how this mind set helps me appreciate my closet and the size that it is. Our house was built in the 1950's (I know, not that old.) But the closets are much smaller than what they would be in a new house. For the past 7 years I've been trying to come up with a way to give us more closet space and now I dont feel like I have to. FREEDOM!
I am perplexed as to why I bought so many beautiful clothing items and never wore them. I wear the same ten items. They are not my favorite, but they are comfortable. My closet is an area I dread.
This video is so encouraging to me. And that idea of setting the clothes aside to see if I miss it later is genius. No hard and fast “it stays or goes”. Thank you for making such encouraging and very practical videos.
I love this. As a breastfeeding mom with 3 little kids, I don't feel like the super dressy monochromatic capsule wardrobe works for me. I have a few patterened blouses (in case I spill on myself the stains won't show 😆) a couple pairs of jeans, and some nursing friendly dresses. That's it. Makes things so much easier.
I somewhat did this two months ago. I removed all of my too small clothing and clothes I knew I wasn't going to wear. Then I washed all of my dirty laundry. I sorted from that what I had to have and put it away. Without looking at the rest, I put them into tubs, just dumped it in tubs, and put them in our "catch all" storage room. If I don't need them next year, I'll donate. I only own a week and a half worth of clothing. I have 1 decent dress so I'm ok. If I have to work outside of the house, I'm sunk. Good will doesn't carry my size. But I'm working on it. Thank you for sharing.
As a nurse I’m an essential worker and for even the diff basic things I do in life this is t enough clothing for me. The idea is nice about getting rid of things NEVER chosen. I can do that much.
I started my minimalist journey about a year ago. I love what you said about making a list to fill gaps in your wardrobe. I started doing that and found it’s very helpful. I no longer feel guilty about making a purchase because I know I really needed it.
Thank you so much for this video. Yesterday morning I wanted to get dressed but couldn’t find anything (I’m four months postpartum for the fourth time, been here before 😅😅). Had such a meltdown, it was terrible. And I spent last Saturday thrift shopping for clothes thinking my problem would be solved- it wasn’t. I saw a recommendation for you on Cas’s Facebook page from a commenter this week- I loved your stuff immediately and have been watching a video for encouragement everyday. We recently moved and now that we’re unpacking I really learned how I had TOO MUCH to deal with. I finished your wardrobe method yesterday evening and I felt SO MUCH PEACE afterwards. It makes so much sense and even though I have the same clothes as before, and actually less even though I’d already gone through them several times, I don’t feel stressed. I have a list of a few things to fill in the gaps but I’m actually excited about it, knowing what I actually want and need for a wardrobe I’ll wear! I actually made a list on my phone of my whole wardrobe because I am a words person and I don’t have to try to remember what I liked in my wardrobe for later when my sizes are changing again. 🤷🏼♀️ Anyway, thank you again, this was seriously a lifesaver. I will be recommending this video to anyone struggling to declutter their clothes. Oh and a tip for anyone like me, I actually had to hang all my clothes because the separation of certain pants or shirts in a drawer instead of with the others hanging would make me feel all over the place.
I've been trying to only buy solid tops, too. I can change the look with scarves (sometimes from Dollar Tree!) or colorful costume jewelry necklaces that don't take up much room in a drawer.
Yes I love having solid tops to pair with different plaids or sweaters for the fall then you really dont need much more for colder months just layer it on!lol
@@barbaraclarkson2000 I love old navy personally! I go when they are having sales! I like either v-neck or scoop neck. But I have a lot of luck at thrift stores usually!
Your channel is so refreshing. Most minimal channels don’t talk about gaps. I also love that you have patterns and colors. I have basically thrown out 90% off my clothes. It’s sickening. I’m trying to rebuild a small wardrobe I love.
So true! More clothes does not equal more options. I love having my life uniform (as I call it) because it eliminates so much stress and worry. Happy Tuesday!
Yes!! I have little kids and don't have time like I used to for putting together a creative outfit 😜 I love having a simplefied wardrobe!! It's so easy!!!!!!
I want to thank you for making these videos! Hubby and I are grandparents of 2 amazing kids who has been living full-time in our RV for 3 1/2 years. I thought I had decluttered everything! Boy was I wrong! After watching many of your videos, I've found so much more to declutter! Have a Blessed Day, Dawn
I love this! We practice this method when we comb beaches for seashells. We can only keep what we can carry. So after a while we ask if we like the new found shell more than one already in our hands. I love fitting into our space and I find even with simplifying my clothes I still don’t use even half of it all.
A full length mirror helps. Checking how the back and sides look helps. Major tip: if you have to constantly adjust it when wearing it; it's NOT working FOR you, it needs to go. Donating makes you feel good, esp if you spent a lot on the item - it's a present for someone else! Luv your vids - keep up the good work! 😊😍
Perfect. I’m doing it....again. I always get sidetracked by the things ‘I love’ as if my closet is a scrapbook or memory container. Are the conditions right to wear it...no? But do I let it hang there and take up prime real estate?... yes. I’m going back in to tackle it.
This is perfect I did the through it all on the bed and go through to see if it sparks joy, ugh never again. But this yes it might work, so I am going to try because despite getting rid of clothes I still have a ton. I just dont get rid of enough from forever ago.
I love this way of going through clothes! I have never done it this way before, but I think it will totally change the game. I do have the guilt when I walk into my closet that I don't even wear some of it and that's about to change!! Thanks for the awesome video!
I am NOT getting my money back by saving the clothes I bought and that no longer fit. I have so much stuff that is no longer my size that I just need to let go. Your ideas, "permission," and examples will be a great help. Thanks for another wonderfully useful video.
I guess it depends on what you do, if you go to work outside like her, so she will keep them until the pandemic is over because she will go back to her old activities and might need more than 5 dressy tops. For me, I'm pregnant, so Im going to keep them until i give birth and few months in because from my experience, i will go back to my old shape and i will need my old clothes. I just have one bin in the attic, and thats ok, it's not considered clutter.
I quarantine the clothes for the season. For example, if I’m quarantining the summer clothes, then I label the bin “donate in October” and if I haven’t missed the items by then, I’ll donate it in October. You might quarantine your fall clothes around Labor Day and then check your quarantine bin in January.
I recently donated a duffel bag stuffed full of clothes WITHOUT checking what was in it. I'd been stuffing for about five years without donating and didn't even remember what I'd put in. I was scared to look for fear I'd decide to keep items I obviously did NOT need!
I did this and it was quick and really a good way to get a guilt free closet. Move those unused clothes to someone who can fit and appreciate and NEEDS them.
I crave variety and so I might start by doubling your numbers, but I like this idea and I know there’s definitely many things in my closet I only have for certain occasions or things that I put on for 10 minutes and change out of every single time because it doesn’t feel right when I have it on. The best part about this is that I know I’m not ACTUALLY getting rid of the stuff and so it’s still there if I need it. I will be trying this method out! Thanks Dawn!
Our pastor’s wife has what she calls “Jesus shirts”. They are forgiving and cover a multitude of sins. 😂 I also wear loose or stretchy fabric because my weight/swelling fluctuates. 👍🏻
I think this approach will be very helpful. This year I have been purging 1 garment every time I fill a garbage bag. Sometimes they go in the bag, sometimes they go in a laundry basket I keep in the car for donations. Being 72, some of my clothes are sooo old. Last week I pulled out a pair of capris. I decided to try them on and when I pulled them up the elastic disintegrated into dust. I did not feel bad about throwing those away. My sister teased me about this approach and then she said, "That's the only way you can let go, isn't it?" Guess the answer is yes. Thanks for your insights!
I watched this video a month ago. I loved the KonMari folding method but going through each item of clothing was overwhelming. I do wear my favorite items over and over and the rest just hang out not getting used. For a year I told myself I would do the KonMari method of cleaning out clothing as I found her method so helpful for the rest of my house. Loved this video because I followed your method with some modification and in 1 hour I was done with sorting. I just ask myself " Do I wear it?" if not it . As I did a second pass while folding items to donate, return to closet or put on hold for a while I found just a few items that I wasn't ready to let go. Another few items have been hung in second space where I can see them as I wasn't ready to get rid of them, and the rest were donated that day. I usually have boxes of items to donate sitting around for months to a year. The whole process felt wonderful! YAY
I love your earrings they are sooo pretty!! Still working on simplifying and I have done my closet several times. I just redid this week and I feel like there is more I can get rid of.
I've actually been working on this because I'm in between my "notmal" clothes and maternity clothes. I'm trying to be really intentional (and have a list) about my new pieces being both maternity AND nursing friendly so that I will get the most wear out of them in this ever changing season of life. Thanks Dawn for yet another simple made easy video❤❤
I didn’t want to let go of the dresses I never wear, so I reduced my inventory enough that I HAD to wear the pieces I love. Now for the first time instead of just owning clothes I feel like I have “a wardrobe”.
I just have to say I am so happy to have found you! I am really waiting until we move from our fifth wheel into the house to really minimalize but honestly, I went into my PJ/workout drawer the other day and ditched so many tshirts I dont wear or like! I dont even know why I held onto them! You have given me so much inspiration. I was such a chronic clothes holder my husband told me the other day that he was cool with getting rid of stuff and I HAD CONVINCED HIM NOT TO! WHAT!? SMH. Thank you for your inspiration! I also watched a Christmas video you did and while I had already done all my Christmas shopping, you totally inspired me for next year to go easy! I am so excited to implement all I am learning.
I think this is easier if you live somewhere with defined seasons. Here in Scotland we can have three seasons in one week. I’ve worn a summer dress then thermals and woollens two days later. The wardrobe you chose I would be able to wear for about a month in the year
I AM currently pregnant, but I look forward to a time when maybe I can gravitate towards clothing that doesn't look like it could also be camping equipment. 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ not going to act like I don't keep wearing maternity for a few months postpartum.
the idea of quarantining some of your wardrobe really resonated with me! I recently decluttered my closet and found group of things that probably needed to go... but I couldn't. I used your idea, They were quarantined. I wrote note in my calendar to donate the quarantine box in 6 months if I havent even thought of them. Good idea!!
3 days back I came across your video and have been decluttering a bit everyday. Have completed my clothes, paper clutter, few drawers. It feels really good. I keep in mind that if I don't feel like decluttering, I can give myself the option of 5 minutes and that makes it easier. Happy to declutter !!! Thank you. Keep the videos coming !
Question: would you do this type of wardrobe per season, us with all four seasons (winter/summer)? How do you overlap, do you store out of season clothes in bins (out of sight/mind)? Thanks so much!
Try swapping out a few items as the weather changes. Then you'll keep your choices narrow. Store your summer clothes separately than the quarantine clothes.
I finally got completely caught up on my laundry yesterday, and apparently I'm good at retiring things to "paint shirts", but I could barely get that drawer closed yesterday... I definitely need to purge those things.
I went through all of my clothes and accessories using the KonMari method and got great results, including losing 30lbs. I had so many clothes (including ones with tags still on them) and nothing to wear, just as you said. It has been two years and I have managed to accumulate a closet full again. I’m glad you discussed this today to remind me that I don’t need to keep purchasing random items just because it’s cute or on sale. I’ve ended up with a lot of items that don’t go with anything I already own. I plan to tackle these items this weekend. Thank you for the motivation.
Retail stores entice us to buy more! Being home, it’s where we wear them Now. My older sister, now age 81, dresses up for church in her living room each Sunday. Ha! But also dresses up to go get groceries. It’s an interesting thought of how we are now being ‘forced’ to look at the use of our wardrobes differently. We both swap jewelry. Don’t donate items. Try giving items/accessories to friends, family first. I save earrings to give as birthday and holiday gifts. This will save you $ this year. Great you lost the weight! Congratulations!
Your bag for later is great idea. I heard that and it helped. Be no good chucking then missing, or constantly having around stuffing your good sense and JUDGMENT either.
Thank you for for helping us declutter without telling us to buythings. Most of the ones I find want me to go to the Dollar tree and buy more stuff I don't need I'm sure for some people that might be okay but for me it wouldn't work out. I also find you down to earth and entertaining and wish you the best thanks for your help
This video was actually helpful. TY for adding insight and thoughts because I have the same thoughts and feelings when going through my closet. The biggest thing I got from this is "don't let your closet taunt you." MIND BLOWN. Thank you!
I have cleaned out so many clothes thanks to your system....it’s freeing! I think of your beautiful family as I pray for safety, peace and calmness over your area 🙏🏻
Due to depression and lack of self care, and ugh 61 years young. My clothes are all over floor and on my washer and dryer. I'm tired of it. Want to try this asap. Thank you so much!!! God bless you 💖
I did do homeschooling for 2 years with two of my 4 children ( ages 5-7 and 9-11) and 1 year with the 4th., oldest one in grade 7. I regret not continuing! As far as clothes, I need to simplify, and want to get my old weight back so I can wear more of what I love. I will do the plan like you said, because it is simpler and the clothes I like aren't gone! I refuse to buy a new bra until I get to my desired weight because for once in my life I want a properly fitted one. Thank you for the tips!!
Hi! I really enjoy your episodes. I've watched this one before and I'd like to share how I've reduced my wardrobe. Each day I dress for work. When I come home I hang what I wore in the opposing side of my closet - rather than throwing them into the laundry right away. Each day I repeat this. 5 days of work. The clothes I don't wear are just their 'friends in the closet' who I don't hang out with. 😊 I have routinely been throwing out the really worn items, donate the good ones and the exceptional and lightly worn to the consignment shop. It works. In the last two months I've reduced my wardrobe in half! Each time I watch your shows, I'm inspired to reduce more. Thank You.
Love that you brought up that we demote clothing and things to ‘grubby clothes and or pjs’ I’m so guilty of this. Then get frustrated I don’t get the wear out of my nicer clothing I like more as I’m wearing the old stained and ripped ‘grubby’ or housework clothes I’d already wanted to declutter!! I love your videos so helpful and great points to think about in all of them!
Moved mine in a box to 3 different homes over 25 years and then realized daughter would never wear it.....so I donated it. One less box to move next time.
I donated my wedding dress after 30 years of holding onto it to a group that makes the dresses into burial gowns for babies that passed away. Or just donate to any thrift store. I gave my veil to my neighbor that has 4 girls to play dress up with. Only thing I regret is not doing it sooner.
My biggest "hangup" is now unpacking Summer clothes that were packed and moved in January, (the middle of Winter! from our home in NE Ohio to our new home in SE Michigan. If they fit or not, since some are new not yet worn and I'm in the midst of a get healthier (also lose weight!) program. 😁
I have 25 hangers for 80% of my clothes, and it's wonderful! I have three drawers in a shared dresser for underthings, seasonal specific things I'm not using, and pajamas/loungewear, and one small bin each for workout clothes and graphic tees; otherwise everything is on one of my limited hangers.
Clothes that make you feel guilty, Loads of clothes but very few options, All those clothes and yet there can still be gaps... so true! Love this video, thank you :)
Ok so I stumbled across your videos two days ago. I've already started in so many places in my house. I'm already pretty practical with stuff for the most part but these videos have really changed my perspective on stuff. This video in particular was the kicker I needed for my closet. I got rid of 5 garbage bags full today from just my clothes. Wow! I needed that. Especially after having a baby last year. Thank you.
So thankful that I have found you. So many great topics. I actually found you in December and started New Years day De-Cluttering. I feel like I can think clearer. We are also remodeling a farmhouse and it feels like it takes forever...I suppose if I would quit changing my mind about things it would go faster, and if we could quite finding crazy problems with this house. I work from home as well , I have an accounting/bookkeeping business as well as being a licensed Texas Realtor . Organization is mandatory with both. Keep the great tips coming. My husband loves it too!
I thought that just last week I donated a pile. I just watched you and now I am donating a whole blue Ikea bag!! ❤️ I now have less clothes than my husband.
Ok. I just did this with my daughters closet. It was so much easier for her to take out what she likes and bag what’s left for “quarantine”. She has anxiety so not having to look at all her clothes piled on her bed and floor was so much better for her mental status and it was very quick! Thanks for sharing this video! 👍🏻🤗
It's tough when you work outside of the home and need work/dress clothes. I feel like others judge when you continue to wear the same 5-7 outfits over and over. Thoughts?
I don't agree :) I worked professionally for several years with a highly simplified wardrobe. Pick classic pieces that fit and I don't think anyone notices!!!
Guys especially don't notice if someone has worn the same thing recently! I'm the only woman in the office and sometimes I think I could wear two outfits alternating!
Plus, if you have all your favorites in your closet and everything looks FANTASTIC on you... why not wear them more often??? Show them off! I've got this one lovely flowy floral top that I thrifted for like $4 back in like January... and I'd wear that thing 7 days a week if I thought I could get away with it!!! 😄
Try buying solid color pieces and changing the look up each time you wear it by using scarves or fashion jewelry. People will notice the print on the scarf or the color & style of the necklace (or brooch or earrings) more than the plain blouse/dress under it. Scarves and fashion jewelry can be (lots) cheaper than clothing and take up much less room.
Love this! I go through my closet and simplify regularly but this system is fantastic. I'm doing it right now and already have a pile on the floor. I've also started saying to myself "simplify as if you were moving into a tiny home on wheels!"
Thank you for all you do Dawn. You have changed my life for better 🥰 I think what's best about you is that we get a visual idea of how your house can still look beautiful even if you have miminimalist home is what has encouraged me so much and I have decluttered 50% of my house and it looks gorgeous ❣
Thank you for inspiring me! I took my kid to kindergarten and decided to watch this video on the way home (walking. Dont worry ;) So the moment I got home. Instead of working. I took one hour to do as you showed. And already donated a whole bag of stuff that I dont really wear. I stopped saying... maybe one day... or .. hey that's a very good fabric. You're awesome. Thank you. Love ya all the way from Jerusalem
This is where your system is brilliant!! The first time I heard you say, "What is an appropriate number?" A huge light bulb went off. I may love a lot of my shoes for example, but do I really need 60 pair? Crazy I know. The same goes for everything from shirts to skirts. Picking the right number and then finding your favorites has helped me get pass the decision over load. I have shared this idea with so many and everyone has loved it. Even professional organizers working with clients. The biggest challenge is getting past decision overload. LOVE it! Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us all.
I noticed when I bought what I wanted it helped. Then you can chuck. Sometimes not ready to chuck til you have your goal first. Then again, others need to chuck to be free to buy their identity.
This has GOT to be the most practical advice I've EVER seen on how to really and honestly address your wardrobe. As you said, the comparison aspect makes it so easy to implement and do! I'm actually going to address my wardrobe now thanks to you. I can't thank you enough for your channel - you brighten my day every time there's a new video. You are the ONLY channel I check regularly, pining for the next video. Can't wait to see what else the Lord has in store for you. And many blessings are you approach homeschool this year - we're starting our 8th year and haven't looked back. You got this girl! :)
I feel like I already have clothing in "quarantine" as I haven't worn so many items in literally years. So just like I already have a minimalist wardrobe (brilliant note BTW), I feel like I just need to get the courage to let go of the things that I am truly not wearing anymore rather than putting them in a bin where they can sit indefinitely.
Such a great idea! For years I didn't have a washer & dryer, so I always had to take my clothes to the laundromat. I worked in an office and had to dress "nice" for work. For this reason I purchased a lot of clothing so I wouldn't have to do laundry as often. I recently moved and got rid of half of my clothes, as I am in the process of downsizing. However, believe it or not, I STILL currently have almost 200 articles of clothing, not including pjs, socks & under garments!!! It's insane! No one person needs that many articles of clothing! So now that I do have a washer & dryer, I have been reviewing what I am actually wearing & also what I will need for the winter. Your idea is genius, as it makes it so simple! Thanks again for this tip, it will make my job so much h easier. As you can tell, I have my work cut out for me. 😁
A number of years back I went through my clothes and paired everything into outfits: each pair of pants and each skirt has its own top. I have about 18 inches of hanging space in the closet I share with my hubby and a 5 drawer chest of drawers for my clothes. (The same chest I have used since I was born) Winter coats and shoes are with my hubby's in a closet near our back door. I only use 4 of the drawers in the chest for clothing. The very bottom drawer has some mementos I keep. Top drawer is undergarments, socks, handkerchiefs, misc. 2nd drawer is jammies and a few lightweight jackets. 3rd drawer is capris and tops. 4th drawer is long pants and tops. Closet is skirts and tops and in a ziploc bag attached to each hanger is the jewelry for each outfit. That covers my entire wardrobe. No separation of seasonal items. It's simple and stress-free. I replace worn-out items on an as-needed basis.
Love this! But when I say I fluctuate in size, I actually gain a bra cup size and a pant size the week before and on my period. So I literally have half of my clothes that I can only wear half of the time! I can't quarantine it because I would be flipping clothes every 2 weeks! Anyone else with me or am I the only one? 😂😭
Wow, I feel for you. Maybe have two sections of your wardrobe, and then know which side to pull from depending on the week. You wouldn’t even look at that other side when it’s not that week.
Yep me too but I keep a lot of "stretchy" clothes and then a few "nice" things in each size but I don't have to wear "work" style clothes right now. I think the separating your closet/wardrobe idea would be best so you can at least figure out what exactly you need when. It takes time to figure it out especially if you need different clothes for different seasons.
Not just you. I’m doing a version of this where, instead of preplanning what I wear, I’m hanging clean laundry in a separate part of the closet rod when I put it up. If I do that for a month, I’ve got a picture of what I actually wore to accommodate the fluctuations, and then I don’t inadvertently get rid of something I’ll need next week just because I’m not needing it this week. (Also, I am finding skirts can be more forgiving than pants…)
This is the best wardrobe information ever. Down to earth, makes sense and actually organically works with my life. Thank you so much for your clarity. Now I have three closets to empty to get down to what really matters.
Can you do a video of your morning/night routine- how does dawn take care of dawn? How does dawn take care of herself so she can take care of her family?
I've simplified my wardrobe, and love it. I also am now able to let go of things immediately when I discover they don't fit, are uncomfortable, not flattering, has holes or stains, etc. I used to keep these items just in case, and then would have to push them to the side over and over again!
I do LOVE your process! While I love Marie Kondo's method of sparking joy, there are things that spark joy but they don't fit. So I end up keeping things that "spark joy", but I don't fit into or they don't fit ME right. I get super overwhelmed when I think of purging clothing. There are items I wore on our honeymoon 3 years ago and my thought process is "I wouldn't necessarily buy that again, but I'm glad I had it. It's really pretty. I wouldn't want to go shopping to find something to replace it someday." Or my current struggle is that I'm pregnant ....... so of course the clothes that used to look good (like those honeymoon dresses) aren't going to be so flattering right now. And I say to myself "I legit may fit into it after baby comes." But I've already had one baby and to be honest, after that, I think I've worn a pair of jeans MAYBE 5 times in the last 2 years. I usually wear leggings and one of our company tshirts. So the idea of putting anything that doesn't fit me right now, into quarantine is a great idea. And if I still can't fit into it a year after baby is born, it goes away. There's this notion that if I find something I like, I should get a lot of them, but now I have a bunch of maxi skirts that I don't really wear. Or I have a bunch so I tell myself I liked them at some point so I must need to keep them. Or I try something on that is questionable and I say "with the right top, this would look really cute." Or "If we go to a wedding that is blue themed, I'm going to want this." And my favorite that pops up when I see a picture "WHERE is that top that I really liked??? Did I donate it? Did my old roommate take it? Did I lose it in a move?" Doesn't matter! It's gone, move on. The madness has to stop!!!! If I pass over it every time, get rid of it. It will be worth it to buy something else for $20 to wear to that wedding if I have to. So THANK YOU for giving me realistic expectations and a way to clear out my closet!
Currently pregnant so I try to keep all the things I’ve outgrown off the hangers and fold them and stack them on the shelf because I know once baby comes I will use them again. I am trying to collect baby clothes too and so I keep a list of what I have and what I need by size so that while I am at garage sales or resale stores I know what I need and what I don’t need because it’s so easy to get hung up on how cute everything is! I also try to stick with specific brands that I know my kids fit into and stay away from ones that I know don’t typically fit my kids. I also am making a big effort to buy things in outfits for baby so I don’t end up with shirts that don’t have matching bottoms and vise versa. It doesn’t matter how cute it is if you can’t wear it!

What about seasonal clothing?
Best line ever, "woops I'm sorry I forgot my pants ". 🤣 Love your video's. 🇿🇦
"You already have a minimalist wardrobe, it's just surrounded by clothes you don't wear" I love that 😂
This sentence made me laugh too, I've never had this view on it but she is right :D
Yep brilliant!
So true!😂 I keep finding clothes I have completely forgotten about.
Truer words were never spoken. You already have a minimalist wardrobe. You got to the core of the problem. Personally, I like neutral colors to wear and then shoes, bags and accessories. Easier to manage, dress and shop.
so true for me!!
I’ve always wanted to put all my belongings in one suitcase. Now is the time to make it a reality.
Lol!
Ashley B 😄👌🏻
FREEDOM!
I was born in 1950. I loved your comment.💜💜💜
I am perplexed as to why I bought so many beautiful clothing items and never wore them. I wear the same ten items. They are not my favorite, but they are comfortable. My closet is an area I dread.
You make so much sense.
IKR....I'm listening and saying....Dawn is so smart!!
Yes! Amen!!
Love, love, love this approach! I know that the "does this spark joy" does not work for everyone, and your approach is so much less stress!
Agree agree agree, “we have a minimalist wardrobe already”... I wear a quarter of what I own. I’m inspired by your enthusiasm! I’m on it, thank you!
Keeping your favorite things instead of looking and deciding on every piece!!! Genius!!! Thank you for sharing. I am loving your videos!
Anyway, thank you again, this was seriously a lifesaver. I will be recommending this video to anyone struggling to declutter their clothes.
Oh and a tip for anyone like me, I actually had to hang all my clothes because the separation of certain pants or shirts in a drawer instead of with the others hanging would make me feel all over the place.
I am transitioning to a solid color shirt that are more elegant and better quality
Where are you purchasing your shirts? And are the T-Shirts? I have one really good quality T-shirt and I can’t find the brand any longer.
@@barbaraclarkson2000 I love old navy personally! I go when they are having sales! I like either v-neck or scoop neck. But I have a lot of luck at thrift stores usually!
@@barbaraclarkson2000 I live in Fl and I shop at TJ max or marshalls sometimes bells outlet not sure if you are available to shop those stores. 😀
Have a Blessed Day,
Dawn
I love this idea of “quarantine” for clothes, makes the decision not quite so final. What would you suggest as a waiting time- a month?
I guess it depends on what you do, if you go to work outside like her, so she will keep them until the pandemic is over because she will go back to her old activities and might need more than 5 dressy tops. For me, I'm pregnant, so Im going to keep them until i give birth and few months in because from my experience, i will go back to my old shape and i will need my old clothes. I just have one bin in the attic, and thats ok, it's not considered clutter.
Hi Megan Lasante, I would say keep it one year. Then you will know if you missed it.
@@sonja_rademacher I will forget I even have it after a year.....or a month. LOL
Good point - we actually wear minimalist clothes surrounded in cupboard with ones we don't!
😆 I love that!
Hahaha. I like that.
So cute, I wear forgiving tops too.
😂😂😂😂
I think this approach will be very helpful. This year I have been purging 1 garment every time I fill a garbage bag. Sometimes they go in the bag, sometimes they go in a laundry basket I keep in the car for donations. Being 72, some of my clothes are sooo old. Last week I pulled out a pair of capris. I decided to try them on and when I pulled them up the elastic disintegrated into dust. I did not feel bad about throwing those away. My sister teased me about this approach and then she said, "That's the only way you can let go, isn't it?" Guess the answer is yes. Thanks for your insights!
Hi dawn. I’ve been listening and relistening to all your videos over the last few days during my major decluttering. So inspiring. Many thanks. 😘
SO glad to hear! Thank you!!!
So does the Queen! Wears things over and over again.
Thanks for being real, especially about leggings. I would love to know the brand you like. Also thanks for being so positive, you shine for Jesus!
DaNae Rakstad ❤️
Among many other things, I really appreciate that you say your name and go right into your video. No welcome back to my channel”. 👍👍👍
Greetings from New Orleans, Louisiana.
You are spot on!
Love you taking Marie Kondo concepts and refined it. Wardrobe layout is great.
Ironically, I’m having to buy clothes for my minimalist capsule wardrobe. ‘Pandemic’ life is my real life! I don’t get out much lol.
Ha ha! I'm in the same situation right now!
I think this is easier if you live somewhere with defined seasons. Here in Scotland we can have three seasons in one week. I’ve worn a summer dress then thermals and woollens two days later. The wardrobe you chose I would be able to wear for about a month in the year
I seem to be stuck in a maternity clothes and pajamas only cycle. Heavy on the pajamas. 🤦🏻♀️
I AM currently pregnant, but I look forward to a time when maybe I can gravitate towards clothing that doesn't look like it could also be camping equipment. 🤷🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ not going to act like I don't keep wearing maternity for a few months postpartum.
Same here girl! Due any day now and I'm living in three or four different outfits because that's all that fits!
I got so big at the end of my third pregnancy that I was outgrowing some of my maternity clothes! The struggle is real.
When I Have the Strength same here! Tee shirts, sweat pants, pajama pants. I haven’t had on a skirt or dress in a year. Oy!
Thank you. You´re a blessing to me. Going to spend a small chunk of each day sorting out my family´s wardrobes.
the idea of quarantining some of your wardrobe really resonated with me! I recently decluttered my closet and found group of things that probably needed to go... but I couldn't. I used your idea, They were quarantined. I wrote note in my calendar to donate the quarantine box in 6 months if I havent even thought of them. Good idea!!
"Woa, I forgot my pants." -Dawn 2020
3 days back I came across your video and have been decluttering a bit everyday. Have completed my clothes, paper clutter, few drawers. It feels really good. I keep in mind that if I don't feel like decluttering, I can give myself the option of 5 minutes and that makes it easier. Happy to declutter !!! Thank you. Keep the videos coming !
Question: would you do this type of wardrobe per season, us with all four seasons (winter/summer)? How do you overlap, do you store out of season clothes in bins (out of sight/mind)? Thanks so much!
TheColoradoBoys check out project 333 by Courtney carver
Try swapping out a few items as the weather changes. Then you'll keep your choices narrow. Store your summer clothes separately than the quarantine clothes.
First thing in the morning, I am doing this and quarantining all my unworn clothes! This helped 100%!
Did I miss how you handle seasonal clothing? This is a struggle for me.
In another video she mentioned that she stores winter clothes in bibs in the basement.
This is such solid advice! I can’t touch everything and decide if it sparks joy as a sahm of littles. Thanks again for sharing!
I finally got completely caught up on my laundry yesterday, and apparently I'm good at retiring things to "paint shirts", but I could barely get that drawer closed yesterday... I definitely need to purge those things.
This is by far the best video now to pair down on our clothes. Can't wait to try this tomorrow!
I hate to buy clothes because I do not like the styles. Always wear black pants, makes it easy.
Me too!
I have routinely been throwing out the really worn items, donate the good ones and the exceptional and lightly worn to the consignment shop.
I’m curious to know what you did with items like your wedding dress and other one time occasion items.
I simplified my wardrobe 2 years ago to only what I wear on a regular basis and have had no problem maintaining it. I love it!
Thank you.
I really liked this version...it is just so practical and you somewhat addressed a few of the trickier situations....
Thanks ! WHAT a neat way to look at it! You have motivated me to make life easier and simplify is my new word!
So thankful that I have found you. So many great topics. I actually found you in December and started New Years day
De-Cluttering.
“Woops I’m sorry I forgot my pants” 😂
I only have five work outfits and nobody says anything about them being repetitious.
This is absolutely brilliant. I never heard of decluttering clothing framed in this way. It just makes so much sense. Thank you.👌🏻
Dont worry ;)
So the moment I got home. Instead of working. I took one hour to do as you showed. And already donated a whole bag of stuff that I dont really wear. I stopped saying... maybe one day... or .. hey that's a very good fabric. You're awesome. Thank you. Love ya all the way from Jerusalem
“Whoops, I forgot my pants.”🤣
Great job, Dawn! You not only simplified your life and motivated me, but also scored some great bargains👍🏼👍🏼
This is the best wardrobe information ever. Down to earth, makes sense and actually organically works with my life. Thank you so much for your clarity. Now I have three closets to empty to get down to what really matters.
Can you do a video of your morning/night routine- how does dawn take care of dawn? How does dawn take care of herself so she can take care of her family?
your first few sentences are so true/I have my favorites and then the rest just hang around
I love direction you go when you explain these things! Makes the process so much easier!!
