    ABOUT THE GOOD PLACE
    From creator Michael Schur (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Parks and Recreation” and “Master of None”) comes a unique comedy about what makes a good person. The show follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell, “House of Lies,” “Veronica Mars”), an ordinary woman who enters the afterlife, and thanks to some kind of error, is sent to the Good Place instead of the Bad Place (which is definitely where she belongs). While hiding in plain sight from Good Place Architect Michael (Ted Danson - “Cheers,” “CSI” - in an Emmy Award-nominated performance), she’s determined to shed her old way of living and earn her spot.

    This scene is even more touching when you consider that a few episodes ago, Chidi was worried that Eleanor would eventually grow bored of him after spending an eternity with him. Instead, she spends this episode having trouble letting go of him, while he is content and confident about him leaving.

    I've seen alot of people say they wished the show ended on the episode before this one, and that the show should've ended with everyone happy in the good place, that it was unnecessary to show the characters final deaths. But I completely disagree, this episode rounds off the show with such a healthy and positive message regarding death. If the show ended in the episode before, the final message of the show would've been, "Hope that heaven exists because that is the only way you can achieve happiness and death should be rejected and escaped from" However with this ending, the show teaches us about how death is a natural part of existence and it shows us why death is something that we all need to come to terms with in our own ways. It depicts loss and acceptance in one of the most beautiful ways I've ever seen in any show.

In the end we see most of the main characters commit suicide so they won't get bored.

    • @haildorothygale
      @haildorothygale 4 роки тому +261

      @@grfrog There is very little in The Good Place to suggest a 'higher power' was ever part of the design, the issue was that the system sucked and wasn't fit for purpose. The point of the show's ending was that humans aren't built to go on forever. To be able to tolerate eternity we'd have to be fundamentally altered in ways that would erase who we are as people and human beings (like what had already happened to the residents of the 'good' place when Team!Cockroach showed up there). The Good Place acknowledged something that many of us struggle or haven't come to terms with yet: Inherent in the nature of human existence is the fact that at some point we must stop existing. The Good Place presented a wonderful scenario where we got to do it on our own terms.
      I prefer their scenario to the religious idea of heaven tbh, which seems both torturous and irrational. Boredom is a fundamental aspect of being human, and incompatible with the concept of eternity. Also, suicide is a culturally loaded word that would require distress to be a trigger for your point to be valid. They didn't commit suicide, they made a choice, in a similar way that someone who decides to stop medical treatment for a condition might do. They surrendered to the inevitable, as we all must at some point. I hope you can see the difference.

    This finale was genius. In most stories, the finale would be the happily ever after from the previous episode, but this show knew better.
    It made you almost upset that the characters ended their story getting everything they wanted. You wanted them to stay around and be happy forever, but the whole point of the previous episode is to tell us that an eternity of happiness can grow dull and lifeless.
    These characters saved millions of souls, worked so hard and against all odds but still succeeded. A part of you wants them to remain in paradise, but another part knows that they deserve peace, they deserve to be let go. They deserve to finally rest.
    The people in charge could have easily racked out another season just for money, but they let the show go when there was nothing left for it, just like the characters. This finale was so bittersweet and felt so complete. Everyone involved deserves an Emmy

    • @swcomment5542
      @swcomment5542 4 роки тому +138

      Primira interesting that you equates stepping through the gateway to no longer being in paradise. There is a book entitled conversations with God. One of the things that God says in the conversation is that when we leave this earthly plane and go to the next one, it isn’t the end. He says that at some point of our choosing we can decide to reabsorbed into his light and his energy and unify with him completely. So when I saw the ending my interpretation was that they had been in the place of bliss but their soul was completely healed and was ready to re-join God again. And as much as I will miss those characters could anything be more blissful than being one with a God.

    • @HoodieHorizon
      @HoodieHorizon 4 роки тому +143

      SWilkes Comment My entire comment is saying how they deserve to finally be at rest after enjoying their life and after life to the fullest.
      I even mentioned how the point of the prior episode was to tell us that the good place is like a vacation and not meant be forever.
      I never once even tried equating the door as a bad option. I was just saying that as a viewer, you view a happy ending for the heroes as saving the day, getting all the material items and wishes they want, etc. etc. etc. you view it as the prior episode.
      So when you see the characters not wanted to exist anymore and to finally be at peace, it’s bittersweet since you have this presumption of a perfect ending and what’s best for the characters and situation flooding your head.
      The door is just another part of the good place. But instead of material happiness, you get spiritual peace.

Chidi's speech took two minutes but it summed up thousands of years of people trying to make sense of life. Those two minutes had artists, and writers, and painters all working to express one beautiful idea. I have never had a banker or a brokerage firm give my soul what this two minutes gave me.

      What I've noticed about Kristen's acting over the years is that she just absolutely disappears into any role she plays and all I see is the character. Take arguable the three most famous roles of her career: Veronica Mars, Princess Anna, Eleanor Shellstrop. When I watch each of these forms of media, I don't see a person acting or any of their other characters. I see Veronica. I see Anna. I see Eleanor. I watch these characters as if Kristen Bell as an actress doesn't exist and each them are real people who live in some sort of alternative reality. I'm invested in their stories and who they are - their flaws, their goals, their weaknesses, everything.
      That's the sign of an excellent actor. Everyone seems to love Kristen for how sweet, funny, wholesome, relatable, and kind she is as a person. Believe me, I do too. I just want to express just how freaking amazing she is at her job.

    I didn't cry at the ending. Not because I'm some heartless monster who wasn't moved by the show. I absolutely loved everything about it and this finale took me on such a emotional roller coaster. It was more of a feeling of catharis and relief than it was sadness.
    At the end, I just felt proud and happy for everyone in the show. Eleanor breaking down about her fear of being alone hit me really hard as well as this scene. But by the end of this emotional roller coaster, it truly warmed my heart that all of these people that we got to know over the years finally achieved inner peace and allowed themselves to end their existence in such a wonderful manner while at the same time inspiring the good in people of Earth.
    Eleanor and Chidi, in particular, had lived an eternity together in hundreds of different lives and had always loved one another and allowed each other to improve themselves every single time. After so much time of them being together, each of them deserved to go out peacefully and to leave a positive imprint on the rest of the universe.
    It's hard to believe that a single network comedy TV show can pack such of an intellectual and emotional punch. I loved everything about this show.

      This show was not only great because it showed that characters can grow, it was great because the whole premise was "can human beings improve over time and get better," and those *were* the characters and they *did* improve. Eleanor began as a selfish person who really did not care about other people, and at the end she was warm and open and loving. It's astonishing that this was all so meta and that it worked. These were not just characters but metaphors for real people, for us as a species. Their growth as characters, their ability to change in a positive direction, was the answer to the philosophical problem that is very real every day of our lives. So, fiction, but not just fiction.

    Something I realized, before the new system, no one got into the good place for many years because people were not nice enough, they didn't listen to their consciences, and I think that's because the good souls of the universe were traped in the good place in infinite delight. But now, as we saw in the last minutes, the good people of the universe become something like good energy, particules of conscience, and then they travel to the earth and affect the people, in a good way, giving them the ideas of being nice again, and now, a lot of people can get into the good place, and at the end they just become part of the good side of the universe.

      Yes! I believe it’s like a cycle, at some point, the universe wants to experience itself and so it will create new souls which is where people come from in the beginning. It’s all a circle. The circle, of liiiiifeeee...

      Basically the afterlife in the show went from Abrahamic religion system to Buddhism.
      Abrahamic religion (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) : after dies, either go to Heaven (Good Place) or Hell (Bad Place). End of story.
      Buddhism : after dies on earth, everyone go to bad place (Hell) to be tested. It's cycle of death and reincarnation (reboot, Samsara), until they become good and worthy to go to Good Place (paradise), and after they feel enough, they can go to universe (Nirvana = peace, emptiness). So, Good Place and Nirvana become the goal.

    This has to be the most bitter sweet ending I’ve ever watched. I mean yes they are at peace, they made it to the Good Place, they spent what is probably hundreds of thousands of years together. But they’re all gone, even Tahini will eventually. She will literally have done everything. After all that, they enter all joy is now eternal peace, but it feels like they are truly dead. They can’t come back, they have no memories and so on. If this is how the afterlife actually worked, I quite literally don’t know if I can go through the door. But it feels so sad and heartwarming that after everything they are just... back in the sea.

      The way I see it.. the way I think what happens when you pass through the door. Is. Your essence or being, is returned back to the universe. That small bits and chunks of you, is reincarnated in the next generation. As you spend thousands of years, earning your way into the good place. Growing as a person while you are there, your existence and desires sated. You move on. You become, a much better version of yourself.. And you pass those tiny bits of yourself onto the next generation. Making the world a better place. While sure, those bits and pieces will never come together and form them again. their existence is now over. But that is okay, its the start of a new cycle.

      It's a very short sighted ending. There's literally an infinite amount of things one can do if not bound by logic. The humans in this TV Show, even in the afterlife, are bound by their humanity. Hence why they feel emotions such as Boredom, Sexual arousal, etc. A true "heaven" would optimize humans so they no longer feel those biological constraints. The Good Place is more akin to purgatory, than Heaven.

Like natures cathedral. There’s a lot of beauty in the world but the silence and grace amongst those trees would be the perfect place for my door to be.

    In “The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching,” Thay writes about the Five Remembrances:
    When we look at the ocean, we see that each wave has a beginning and an end. A wave can be compared with other waves, and we can call it more or less beautiful, higher or lower, longer lasting, or less long lasting. But if we look more deeply, we see that a wave is made of water. While living the life of a wave, it also lives the life of water. It would be sad if the wave did not know that it is water. It would think, “Someday I will have to die. This period of time is my lifespan, and when I arrive at the shore, I will return to nonbeing.” These notions will cause the wave fear and anguish….
    We become arrogant when things go well, and we become afraid of falling, of being low or inadequate. But these are relative ideas, and when they end, a feeling of completeness or satisfaction arises. Liberation is the ability to go from the world of signs to the world of true nature. We need the relative world of the wave, but we also need to touch the water, the ground of our being, to have real peace and joy.
