If your goal is to get the ac to blow through the front vents and you don't care about a functioning defrost mode simply plug the end of the hose shown here at 2:20 with some duct tape. This hose attaches to the controls for the defrost / front vent selector and when the hose is open to the environment defrost mode is selected but when the hose is shut and a vacuum can form the front vents are selected. It's not a proper fix but it was quick and easy and got the ac blowing out the front vents of my 96 gmc safari quick and easy, which is important when it's 95 degrees out and you only get a day off from work every few weeks. My plan is to properly do the job in the fall when it's cooler out and not miserable working on your vehicle in the street. So appreciate the video you helped me to get my ac working again!
Perfect! Worked a treat. Can confirm that if the vac hose has broken off back in the engine, behind the AC pump, then take the engine cover off. It's easy and makes access a breeze
Just did mine thanks to you pointing it out here! Mine broke off in the coupling and had to pull it all the way out and attach the hose. Just glad I didnt go through the cabin! Thanks again
Nice video, I had this same thing happen but I removed motor cover in side the van. What a pain in the, I like your way better after removing that air box you have no issue getting to that intake where it's hooked up. Seems alit easier. Thank you
Great video I did this on my 2003 before fixed it..with new hoses then the one that goes down around on right side broke again. So I'm gonna have take the cover off to replace the entire hose. You are right that does fix the front vents I have a rear AC also it keeps it really cold but nice to have the front ones working too.
Thanks for sharing this information. I had to pull the engine cover off to connect the line since all the hose crumbled. The vents now work correctly. The vacuum ball crumbled a while back. Do you have any videos on the hose routing to and from the vacuum ball? Now today the a/c stopped working.
What size fuel / vacuum line did you use for this particular fix? Before I order new tubing i wanna make sure i get the proper size and i dont have a caliper handy
This maybe an old vid, but mine was broke at the other end, and I used a pen cartridge the clear little tube that hold the ink in a Bic, and it worked, thanks..
Yea, I think there's a vacuum canister that's loosing vacuum. Either a cracked line or the canister itself is bad. I'm not sure where it's at on the Astro, but you should be able to google that. I've got a ford that does the same thing.. i've been meaning to fix it for like 3 years now... arrrgh
The vacuum canister should be on the other side of the rain flap on the passenger side wheel well. You'll need to remove the wheel and there's a retainer clip that you need to remove to get on the other side of that rubber flap and it should be up in that area.
@@JLPicard440 thanks for input. I went and found that the vacuum canister had been bypassed completely, throttle vacuum went straight to the heater control. Installed new throttle vacuum vall as well as the one-way valve and still same symptoms, got to love it!!!
@@ADubTheGrizzy i have a 92 with that same problem...still cant figure it out...i was told there is a check valve somewhere that get stuck but i never found it..
i will look at mine when it gets warmer been really cold here to check it. mine has no air from any spots but hear the sound from changing the settings from the different vents just no air comes out. so i will check the hose and go from there.
Oh wow! That sounds like a good one to diagnose and fix.... I have a ford van right now that looses vent when under load... I'll have to fix it one day. It's been a pain every time you go up a hill the vents cut off... 😂
@@Dominoid86 replaced that 2 years ago so I knew it wasn’t that. But I checked it anyways. Also replaced heater core and opened the cover for blender doors.
Thank you for the video. I'm looking for the rear door rubber weather strip for my 2003 ASTRO but I can't find it anywhere, any idea where I can get it?
I knew I had some decrepit vacuum lines. I did the same “where the hell does that go!”. I found two. But I’m gonna look under air intake system. Those hoses and tube are really pretty chincy.
Is this the same vac line that routes to the heater blower box? I have a similar problem, and I pulled that hose off and it was full of water or seemed like water, could have been coolant from the core? Haven't checked this line you show here yet. Anyway, any advice on that would be nice. Thanks!
Ron Bond I have the same thing going on with another vehicle... I believe it's the vacuum reservoir and check valve... I don't know where it is on a Astro... but I'm sure it's a nightmare... there may be a way to bypass it and relocate it to a better spot... try google that and see if there's any information on it... there is on my e250 with that problem... I just haven't had time to try and fix it yet
I'm overhauling my Mom's Astro ac/heat system with everthing: compressor kit, condenser, evaporater, blower motor, heater core, and the vacuum lines, O-rings, and hopefully after that it's gonna work for summer and winter for years and years later. The heat can be dangerous in the later summer months of Texas.
Wow, that sounds like a lot of work! especially on a van... but yes your right about the heat.. i used to live in San Antonio,... and it does get hot there!
+Take a Bath Productions Yep but We've known a pretty decent mechanic for many years so I'm just buying all the stuff and drop it off at the shop, labor is only gonna be $300 so I'm just gonna watch and cross my fingers. By the way how many vacuum lines does the astro use?
I found and replaced the hose from the left rear side of motor (engine cover removed) to the check valve on the right front near ac compressor. However, the is a larger hose that is also bad. There are two hoses that run thru the firewall. Where does the larger hose go?Vacuum problems SUCK !!! Anyone?
Anyone here know where I can find vacuum line/hoses replacements? The ones for my 2000 Chevy 454 engine AC system are crumbling away. I have been unable to find anyone who makes replacements. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Vents Worked before engine work
Now blower runs great
But
Just no air through vents
Did something break loose?
Replace your ac heater blower resistor

Thank you! And thanks for the great feedback..
The origin of these hoses that come from the fire wall has two hoses. A bigger one and a smaller one. What does and we’re does the smaller hose go too
I don't know right off hand.
Nothings easy with an Astro. I've had five.
Yep... I think vans in general are more difficult to work on... 😊
Please add a link to the "1000 year" tubing supplier. I used to work at NASA and want to pass on this "super steel" product for the mars mission, lol.
