    I honestly hate the passer rating. They SHOULD have figured out a way to make the maximum rating an even 100. That way even a casual could could easily decipher a good QB rating vs bad. Also, unlike the current system, it should not EVER deduct points if the result was a first down.

    • @P3TARK
      @P3TARK 7 років тому +5

      Well mathematics is a science. The fact that you have a "science class" in school is just board of education being too lazy to do anything/too cheap to pay more teachers, so they're cramming couple of separate sciences into one class.

    • @Xrayballer88
      @Xrayballer88 7 років тому

      They really need to change the name of one of those so it's less confusing to casual fans. "QBR stands" for "Quarterback Rating," but as you say those two are separate stats. I generally say "QBR" vs "Passer Rating" to differentiate, but I understand the confusion.

    • @JRRingling004
      @JRRingling004 7 років тому +1

      QBR is just as stupid as passer rating. PFF probably has the most accurate ratings compared to the eye test

    • @JRRingling004
      @JRRingling004 7 років тому +1

      IHCTerra Passer Rating is just a way to group all of the mainstream stats. It is absolutely not the best stat. Would you agree that Kirk Cousins is the #1 QB in the league these last 2 seasons? Passer Rating says he is

    • @Xrayballer88
      @Xrayballer88 7 років тому

      Joey Brickz Definitely not. Passer rating is results based. It won't tell you that half of a QB's interceptions resulted from a ball bouncing off his receiver's hands nor will it tell you that 70 of his passing yards one game came from a jet sweep that the runner took to the house.
      I agree with Greg Cosell's take on the stat: if a QB's rating is above 95 he's likely playing well and if it's below 80 he's likely playing poorly, but anything between requires film analysis to distinguish the qualities of those players. +1 for you.

    Ok why the minus 3 & the multipy by 5,20,6 & 100 steps? Why not just divide receptions by attempts, interceptions by attempts,passing yards by attempts & attempts by td's & add them up? The other stuff just seems extra & unnecessarily mathy

    What is the need for this math equation

    • @wadedodge4466
      @wadedodge4466 7 років тому +4

      Because the league needed a way to accurately rank passers and every method they had used prior to this (passing yards until 1937, completion percentage from 1938-1940, YPA in the early 60s, etc.) was woefully inaccurate.
      Passer rating isn't perfect, but the top 5 QBs by passer rating over the last 5 seasons are Rodgers/Brady/Peyton/Wilson/Brees so it's obviously pretty accurate

    • @ryanschmelz1542
      @ryanschmelz1542 7 років тому +1

      Wade Dodge why not just add all the stats up no need for all this nonsense

  • @BmooJ27

    • @wadedodge4466
      @wadedodge4466 7 років тому +2

      Because people like to rank players (especially quarterbacks) and passer rating provides a fairly accurate (not perfect) objective measurement of how passers are performing. Casual fans use passing yards or passing TDs to rank QBs, but both of those stats are significantly less accurate

    • @LC-iu3nz

    WTF she didn't even explain why the constants are there. In the first bracket, why subtract 0.3? Or why divide everything by 6 in the end? lol. So in the end you get a number but it's still meaningless because you only know part of what makes it up. This might as well have been a church sermon because basically all she's saying is "just have faith in the bullshit I'm feeding you. Trust me, it's all true" LOL.

    • @Baseballbat95
      @Baseballbat95 7 років тому +1

      its to make the numbers from each segment more compatible. You can't have the numbers from the first bracket add up to say .5 and the numbers from the other bracket add up to 7. Then the 5 individual stats would be weighted differently. They do that to even the playing field..

    LOL!!!
    For the 100th time, old QBs such as Joe Namath and Ken Stabler gave hundreds of short TD passes to their running backs instead. In addition, they threw long passes on third downs because as John Madden loved to say, "An interception is as good as a punt." Namath and Stabler would destroy today's soft NFL defenses. QB rating is truly the most meaningless stat in sports history.

    • @wadedodge4466
      @wadedodge4466 7 років тому +1

      She did a pretty poor job of explaining tbh. Each of the four variables (completion %, YPA, TD%, and INT%) are scaled between 0 and 2.375, with 1.0 being league average when the formula was created in 1970. A passer rating of 66.7 would've been average, and anything over 100.0 would've been an excellent performance. The multipliers may seem arbitrary but they were chosen specifically to convert each stat into a value between 0 and 2.375.

    2:51 is crazy. Either Rodgers was a genius for putting the ball there or insane to throw a certain INT. It shows how stats can be deceiving but also why it’s so hard to scout QBs in college. IMHO Rodgers was the best passer of the 2010s & there wasn’t a close second based on the “eye test” combined with fun factor.

    Lol completely made up equation. Why is everything divided by 6? And why is 158.3 perfect when it's not a set number of variables? I give up

  • @wheels2242
    @wheels2242 7 років тому

    Those numbers are all fine and dandy but this does NOT explain WHY you subtract and/or multiply those controlled base numbers within each equation. Why are those controlled variables valued as they are and why do they stack the way they do? These numbers within the equations and the total equation itself seems "BROKEN"... Thank you for explaining HALF of the stupidity behind this rating system .

    makes you think why these specific numbers such as - 0.3, x0.25, 2.375- n then why divide by 6???? there sure could have been a different measure to calculate passer rating. this is just idiotic

  • @HumanLikeButton
    @HumanLikeButton 7 років тому

    QBR aint that special if someone is just throwing checkdowns. Very misleading. Ofc your completion percentage and yardage is going to increase, but any QB can do that it just depends on the offensive system and weapons. It also doesn't account for drops.

    Should be called the math behind the passer rating. Don’t know if there’s anything scientific about this.

  • @RealRuler2112
    @RealRuler2112 7 років тому

    The thing that I don't like about passer rating is that every now & then, a QB posts a perfect 158.somethin passer rating, but they had several incomplete passes. In NFL terms, shouldn't 'perfect' on offense be defined as a TD every play? How can somebody be perfect and yet have incomplete passes? Say one of those incompletions is a TD instead - why don't they get an increase in rating?
    Just dumb IMO.

      Also some completions for first downs can drop the rating, but then a big yard highlight play doesn’t help much. Weird

    Really shouldn't be called passer rating, but "Passing game efficiency rating". It doesn't isolate the QBs performance, it receivers and pass-protection are in there, too.
