    This federation starship sounds pretty good - I did not expect that before watching the vid, tbh. Yamaha basses always seemed odd/weird to me. Outstanding puns and edits as usual - thx, captain!

      PS - the Plastic nut pun 🤣🤣🤣🤣

      I agree but does anyone mention the black neck? Seems strange to go for the plastic look. Someone is selling one close to where I live so I am enquiring.

    I've had an RBX775 since 2004 and several since. Your review is pretty fair. - the electronics still perplex me 20 years later ! The EQ has a permanent low end boost, and the treble is boost and cut (but no detent). The bottom switch is just a +3dB volume boost. I don't think it is defective, it just doesn't do anything useful by design and i've felt the same about mine and off (the wiring is correct).
    The pickups are both actually reverse split coils (like a Spector) in a soapbar casing (confirmed this with magnetic field film). A great bass, but could have been better with a different EQ/controls.

      Thanks for watching and the comment. Wish I wouldve known some of this before the review so big thanks! There was a thread on one of the bass messageboards that stated a person had it rewired and got the boost switch to "Boost" but Im not sure if its an actual fix or a mod. There were some other threads on other messageboards that stated it was defective and was where I found the wiring diagrams but I havent opened the basses up to check. None are official statements....not even sure if I want to try to rewire it: I like these basses enough where I cant miss something I dont really use

      @@Rib13Bass I'm considering changing the switch to be active/passive - that might make it have more utility ! Just need to work out the wiring 🤔

    Yamaha RBX and TRBX are my favoite basses. I like the modern (now retro cause we're old) look. The weight and comfort are the best (Ibanez SR is probably as good/the same). And then the sound, now this is the issue people miss about these basses and totally my opinion. look at Yamaha home audio equipment, for years it has all said "Yamaha natural sound". they are known for some of the best pianos and their acoustic Guitars are widely acclaimed as some of the best. They have the test equipment to analyze their sound and electrical engineers to make the adjustments. and design their own pickups, so it is safe to say they can go for whatever sound they choose. and they have gone for "VANILLA" mind you a very good vanilla. but in the days of DIs, interfaces/DAWS, pedals and sims, you are gonna mess up those sounds if your bass has a bunch of character/flavor, so vanilla is what you want. because I'm a home/car audio guy I've done my research on clean sounds and they are harder to get right than gear with character. Then for the "flavor" you want just add a Dark Glass, Ampeg, Sadowsky, etc pedal and you have the sound you want. I tell people that in a store, you will like Beats headphones but side by side at home your Sennheisers are gonna win in the long run... ps- trying to find out, but as best as I've been able to tell the names RBX and TRBX and TRB are all short for of "Total Response Bass eXtreame" (TRBX)

      Nice to see ya again! What I love about doing UA-cam is learning stuff like this in my comments so thank you very much for the info: Im going to look into the meanings behind RBX and TRBX but what you are suggesting sounds like it could be very true....I fell in love with this bass as soon as I plugged it in: Not sure what Yamaha was doing back then but they made a super high fidelity system with literally no dead spots anywhere on the neck. Its like playing a keyboard with bass samples lol

    I have owned 2 of these basses. The first one I sold due to just not giving it enough love. But I recently found another one to try and give it a shot. I subbed to see if you have the boost switch problem fixed. I will have check mine as well. Cheers

    I hate that I'm just now finding out about this bass because I can't find a single one for sale in blue! :( Sounds amazing! What would you say is a good modern Yamaha equivalent?

    • @Rib13Bass
      @Rib13Bass  4 місяці тому

      @Fatal_Inertia the pickups and electronics were made in the 90s/00s days of Yamaha "bigger/bolder" piano string fidelity tone days....
      They've gotten away from that since the 2010s which is not a surprise to me as bassists themselves trended away from that......I'm not a trendy kinda guy......however, of all the recent basses that I've tried from Yamaha, including a TRBX605 that I own, their least expensive bass, the TRBX 300/305 series delivers the crispest punchiest tone akin to RBX series

    This was my first "real" bass, after playing my dad's half-broken chinese SG copy with chewed-up tapewounds I found in his basement. I... really didn't like it in the end, but when I got it, it was crazy to just have a real bass. The guy at Sam Ash told me that the plastic truss cover was a 3rd pickup.

      He may have been confused by the Yamaha marketing around one of the Attitudes that has some kind of 'stealth' pickup in that location.

  • @natron1908

    Hey Rib, check the output on the pickups. If they are the same, it might explain the volume difference, similar to guitars that have hotter bridge pickups to account for less string movement.

    I have had one of these for years but never use it. I have too many basses so tend to turn to my favourites,mand much as i love the modern look of this bass, the neck is chunky, and the bass a bit on the light side, even with new ernie ball strings, and the active eq, i struggle to get a decent tone out of it, and pick up any one of the pile of basses i have and they sound better. A real pity because i love the look of it. Anyone got any tips on how to get the eq to do anything? Thanks.

    • @Rib13Bass
      @Rib13Bass  9 місяців тому

      I like the way it sounds with brand new rounds so we probably have different ideas in what we are looking for in tone.....the chunky neck is almost a deal breaker ( it is on the 5 string: I would not have ordered it if I knew it was such a baseball bat to play)

    Visually this bass looks like the design team at Yamaha took the Ibanez soundgear body and the Talman head and then put their twist on it.
