  • #fretlessbass #fretless #bassguitar Old Pro Tips and Tricks No. 2. A discussion about the fake fretless technique, which was utilized by many working Top 40 bass players back in da' day......also, I am using fairly new Roundwound strings on this bass. I use fresh Roundwounds in live situations to have the ability to go from stringy modern tone to shaping like this. This technique would certainly benefit with flatwounds but I play more than just one type of music genre and decade in any given set

It's amazing how well the chorus does at masking the lack of mwah.

Every time you go away....seriously, very convincing. I used to have 2 fretless jazz basses and, like a dummy, sold them. Now I know what to do if I want to cover a fretless song. Thanks!

Yup, that's pretty much how it's done. One small mention: Don't use these effects on other tunes, just the ones you're doing the erstaz fretless. The difference in sound is the key.

Great playing and tips as always bro , thank you 🤘🙏( that bass is beautiful! I have a 2016 elite 4 in the same configuration. The black perloid inlays are awesome)

Imagine Rib13 being in a Top40-Coverband today - he would probably go on a murder spree, playing these songs all the time.

Once again, cool video my friend! Very helpful tips for someone wanting to emulate fretless bass. But now I’m going to be singing Paul Young for the rest of the night. 😂

You can also bend into half and whole steps or pre-bend to lower notes. As well as use a lot of compression to take out some high end fret noise and make things sing out a bit more.

Thanks for the comment! Im hoping other players who do or have done this turn the comments section into an idea exchange to better refine this. Back in the 80s, "close enough" was always good enough....I shouldve mentioned that my Jazz bass has fairly new rounds on it (because thats what I use in live situations) but Im sure a person that uses well worn flats can really get closer to the target

THis technique is way more effective on flat wounds. I can emulate a fretless on any song over 80bpm. You'd never know until you isolate the bass line.

I figured it probably would with flats.....I use rounds and get close enough because I also have to dial in full zing string on certain so gs....rounds give me the most flexibility as a variety player but I imagine flats are certainly better suited for this technique....thanks for watching and commenting

Hey man, check out the band Electric Callboy. They are a German Techno Metal band and they sometimes dress very similar to you in the old picture you showed us.

I boost Mids depending which bass Im using....this Jazz doesnt need it but one of my Yamahas does as an example....Im hoping that viewers understand that Im just laying out the basic framework of what I did back then and still do now...it is certainly open for interpretation and Im hoping that if improvements are made, they will post in the comments section as you did...Thank you for watching and commenting
