funnily enough, they have made songs from their dreams before. the track "gyroscope" was in a dream that Marcus had. after the track was finished, it actually "spooked him to listen to it" because it was so similar to how it sounded. great stuff.
My wife cant really stand them, but its great when we're watching adverts and documentaries and a BoC track pops up, I just tell her "there you go, perfect mood music, inspiring and nostalgic all in one". Trying to get my 2yr old son into BoC - for my last birthday party I played Aquarius and he loved yelling "Orange!" then giggled along with the kids samples, until I couldn't tell if it was him or the track. To top it all off he shuffled his feet and bopped to the beat. A perfect moment...
when I first listened to BoC in high school a few years ago, I knew a girl who had also been listening and there was a very emotional moment when we connected on that.... I can't say it was love, but it wasn't far off.
my dad played me boc as i went to sleep as a kid, and now i experience a big feeling of nostalgia listening to their albums which makes me happy. I would personally say it's a good thing.
I wish there was a club where all Boards of Canada fans could meet and drink beers and talk about the power of music that this band knows how to manipulate with such grace :D
I first heard this song just as I was getting off the ferry from Stranraer, Scotland to Belfast, NI where the friends I was visiting (whom I hadn't gotten to see for like 8 years) were waiting to greet me - such a fantastic memory to associate with a song like this ^_^ Now I put this one on whenever I'm on a trip or journey and am JUST about to arrive somewhere special with a lot of anticipation. It'll ALWAYS be associated with that super-happy feeling I got from getting to see my friends again :) ESPECIALLY considering the 4-day trek that ensued upon landing in London (at 11:15pm, less than an hour before last-chance check-in at the hostel I was staying at, which was NOT easy to find.... NOTHING in London was easy to find. I have NO idea how anyone navigates a city that LITERALLY has one street that branches in FIVE directions! :P) was SUCH a relief to be over-with.
Thanks for sharing. Awesome you heard this playing in public. Scotland is where BoC is from so it's interesting that they played this rare track there.
Sometimes I flick through youtube and listen to BoC songs I've not heard before.... this one is one hit me hard. The whole way through I'm just blissed out, almost crying with happiness as every part of the experience fills my ears and mind. The nostalgia, the organic realness of it, and in this case because it's so rare and inaccessible.... tapes that next to nobody has ever owned, from a time before BoC were what they are today. Covered in grainy unknown photographs.... beautiful. Love.
That song has such a special place in my heart. Even the image too in this video. Was a teenager when I first found this song on UA-cam and it got me into BoC. Used to always play this song when coming home from school on the computer, made love with my gf to this song and smoked weed for the first time also. Just love it
These guys are Amazing! Thought provoking!! The spirit recognizes the spirit so I can appreciate the Psychedelic influence in their music!! No static at all!! cheers! MB
Michael Bradley i don't think you need to ingest a drug in order to make cool things. I highly doubt their brilliant minds were stunted by a drug when creating the brilliance that they make.
You most certainly do not need to ingest drugs to create art, but there's a rather breathtaking catalogue of music and scientific insight that HAS most certainly been inspired by them. In the case of the Sanders brothers, they've mentioned in interviews being influenced (to some extent) by psychedelic experiences: "It reflects the range of subjects that we feel strongly about, for example, psychedelic experiences (there are echoes of those in the album), good trips and bad trips." "Psychedelics make music sound entirely different. Tiny details become massive, a five-minute track can feel like it's five hours long on psychedelics."
I'm a female that loves BoC. My husband calls it "weird noise" and it makes me laugh. I can't really feel the music he likes either. I like to do geometry in my spare time, he likes to watch sports and veg out in his. Never fear, opposites attract, it's in our nature. We do meet on the same page on all the really important stuff. It is so rare to even find someone (outside of music pages/forums online) who knows who BoC are.
Awesome. . .undoubtedly BOC. . .brilliant build up from simple to very complex. . .all of it subtle and beautiful. No one like these two guys. You can never get enough music from them. . .what these single tunes lack is the cohesiveness and structure of an entire album that flows into each song.
I suppose, from a Scottish point of view, the title of this tune could have a dual meaning. Firstly, it could be an ode to the high school of the fine town of Buckie in the north east of this lovely land. Secondly, it could be a paean (?) to gettin right fucked up on the tonic wine so beloved of the folk of the fair city of Glasgow. Who really knows, eh?
I first heard this song just as I got off the ferry from Stranraer to Belfast where the friends (whom I hadn't seen in like 8 years or so) I was visiting were waiting to greet me - such a fantastic memory to associate with a song like this ^_^ Now I put this one on whenever I'm on a journey and am JUST about to arrive somewhere special.
That really makes me smile. Everyone thinks I'm crazy that I listen to BoC too. But when you set it to some other medium people think its amazing. I guess most people just tune to the radio and try to fit in and just disregard true life. I'm glad you're showing your son BoC though. Just remember not to force/influence your interpretation of the song onto him in any way at all, because that's what's magical about instrumental music. You get to interpret it at your own level no matter what.
I feel this is one of the few songs in life that are just "given" to you. Don't care too much about boc, their thoughts behind the tune, what buckie high refers to, etc. It just starts off, and you're there with it, gazing at life inside your mind and in that surrounding moment. The sounds gives you a ride for a while, without restrictions and goals... The humble feel of a kind smile and slight nod from someone passing by, be it in memories or on the side-walk.
Uhmmm, everything...Is that not self-evident? No God, no universe; no universe, no music. But this is not really the place for a thread about who or what created everything, now is it? Or did everything create itself?

Buckie High sounds like the name of a school in Scotland, where BOC are from. This is my favourite piece by them. It's just indescribably beautiful.
Can never go wrong with BOC. Every track is genius. A true musical talent.
