I was born in northern Ontario, Canada. The landscape is made up of boreal forests and swamps. Some parts are almost tundra like. Boc's music was perfect in my teens for me to dream on my bike on back country roads. The vibe was unreal. Lonely. Alien.
I am french and I lived 3 years in canada, and during this three years I can’t tell how much time I passed driving on this roads with boc music. I was like "I dont want to arrive where I am going, and I just want this drive never finish" Crazy memories..
I recently took a trip up highway 17 along lake superior around Sault st. Marie, my mother is from there originally, and her family had a cottage on superior. I grew up looking at that as our 'big trip' every year from where I live in southern Ontario. When I went this year, it was painfully obvious to me how much I didn't fully appreciate the scenery when I was a kid. We drove from Batchewana to Agaway rock blasting BoC in the car, I had to stop for a moment at the side of the road to take it all in together. My family sold that cottage when I was 12, right before I grew to resent the long trips away from my friends. Seeing it again some 15 years later, set to BoC's Olsen had me in tears. This music was made for that landscape.
When you find music like BoC, there is just no going back to anything. I haven't moved on from this genre of music since i found them over 20 years ago. Nothing has clicked like this style. Sure there are similar acts like ChrisT., Arovane, Helios, Ochre, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Casino vs Japan, Freescha, Christian Kleine, Four Tet, Jack Marchment, Loess, Opiate, Patten, Plaid, Solar Bears...etc. but nothing comes close to them. All the musicians i listed have a very small vein that dabbles in what BoC does.
fieldtriqp is closest that I've found, but with more of a feeling of solitude that BoC's stuff. I possibly listen to more fieldtriqp nowadays than BoC.
There's also this, which I've seen labeled as 'Tears from the Compound Eye (Lachrymatory Edit)" or credited to Wisp ua-cam.com/video/fPaaq9xpkqs/v-deo.html
All of their music reminds me of times when I would drive all over Montana. Day or night. Through blizzards, through mountains. Alone, cruising to Boards of Canada tuning through the speakers. Simple memories, man.
This was on repeat, for me, during those first weeks of the pandemic. Safe (thankfully) but unsure of what was to come. The streets eerie and empty but beautiful in their uncanny stillness. A texture of sadness I'd never experienced before-a world-hurt, a collective wound, a sadness far beyond myself.
I put this in the same mental group of amazing BOC songs as Music is Math, Dayvan Cowboy and Reach for the Dead. That might seem a bit much, but wow do I like this. The beat reminds me a bit of Trash80's soundtrack for Darwinia, which I think happens just because of how similar this and BOC is to those songs. So, that triggers some memories for me because of how much impact that soundtrack had. I just adore how someone took a short web loop and turned it into such a killer track.
I feel the same way man, I was depressed 3 years ago but I now look fondly on those times. I'm sure 3 years from now I'll look back at this part of my life and remember the good stuff too. If only I could learn to appreciate it while it's here.
Looking through a rearview, always give the sensation it was better before, but pretty sure, in some years you will feel the same when you'll look at this precise moment
I’m with you! Standing outside on my back porch in Seattle, WA drinking a few beers by myself, taking some time to reflect on the previous year of my life while my fiancé sleeps inside, I thought.. what better way to feel in touch with myself, my life, and the nature surrounding me than to listen to BOC tracks I’ve never heard before. Feeling rejuvenated & inspired for the new year after this track..
@@JFWZA Man I wish I still had some BOC tracks left to discover lol :( At the same time, they never get old and still love them as much as the first time i discovered them.
i had to look up 'god tier' in the urban dictionary. Prior to looking it up, I've been thinking about what it might have meant, it captured my imagination. They are a bit like a musical religion to me (and thousands of others) _ Spot on!
i am revisiting ~5 years later after knowing this song struck a resonating chord within me. on a mushroom trip with my ex girlfriend where i declared i may be falling in love with her and everything about her being. sharing her apartment, feeling the future held everything and anything we could ever want. we were dedicated to each other albeit through the suffering of having to work fulltime. usual adult responsibilities etc etc we are no longer together and hearing it now after that loving peak of acceptance with her, it is truly melancholic and heart wrenching. someone already posted how their heart sinks every time that first loop plays. it certainly hits home and doesn't even really begin to describe what i personally feel apart from profound sadness enjoy what you can while it lasts < / 3 now with the world on the brink of collapse due to inflation, war and all around corruption. you really don't know the good times until they are gone forever to summarize : this track used to feel relaxing, semi nice and a bit upbeat. once life and things go wrong it can be interpreted and heard in quite the opposite way. i guess it only adds to the charm of BoC
Born in the middle of 78' I remember the 80's vividly even for a child. Ppl seamed like a different animal, they seamed older at 25 then now. Possibly because the not so distant past for them and what had occurred. We have degraded since.
Although it has a huge BOC element there's something distinctly un-BOC about it too. Might be the drums (during the middle where there are no drums it's business as normal BOC).....dunno, cant figure it really. Still REALLY like it. Hard to believe a small sample is responsible for all this.
It's pretty hard to find music that has the exact style of BOC, it's incredibly distinct. I think this track does a good job of capturing it honestly, I agree with WeAtG17 in saying this is about the only BOC-sounding remix out there. Compare it to Dayvan Cowboy or Reach for the Dead, best ones I thought of to compare to. I think part of the difference might have been that in those tracks there's a lot more complexity, feels more technical. BOC songs seem to be a lot more wild and varied than this track. The music that I think of as most similar to BOC, for some reason, is always the soundtrack to Darwinia. This track sounds somewhere between BOC and that. Listen to "Excuses" from that soundtrack, best one I've got for this comparison. Or I'm just drawing connections between things I like, I don't know.

I cannot believe that music like this exists sometimes.
And we get to float on a speck of dirt in space and listen. It’s amazing. I love this place.

The only Boc-sounding remix of Boc there has ever been.

Idk, Odd Nosdam made it onto Trans Canada Highway so I think he takes the cake.
I feel like it sounds like BoC x DJ Shadow
The beginning makes my heart sink every time.
Yep, fluttering down, beautiful.
it's stuck in my head
seemo every moment
I get it, love the start
Tregs you must have a big heart ;)
I don't understand how BOC can just lift you out of reality then gently place you back, such a unique feeling
I never knew about this one. Is incredible how Boards of Canada has some of the best tracks I’ve ever heard.
try there mira calix (sandsing remix)

BOC was my music to trip to when I was young.
Beautiful, soul enlighting conversations with myself.
Thank you BOC. You are so unique.
Very atmospheric electronics. I love these vibes! I can bathe in such vibrations for hours. It's great to hear! Magic sound. Perfect rhythm.
Boards of Canada is my lifeforce.

I don't understand how BoC can create such beautiful tracks. Otherworldly.
but this is not boc… only like two samples here are used… also appears in one form or another in Nothing Is Real
Nothing can come close to this. Everything about this tune is sublime
Boards Of Canada’s music just make my life more meaningful every time i’m listening to it
Epic track. And so expertly edited and put together. Those drums could not possibly be more laid back. Masterful. Love it.
One of my favourite songs of all time.
Hits you in the feels. I wish both of them made more.

Just found a 30 min slowed version of this on Spotify...it's certainly not exactly what i wanted, but it'll do for like, plane rides or falling asleep
Feels like strangely soothing melancholic nostalgia.
= BOC
whaaaat i never heard this before... this is going on repeat for the next hour or so.
I could imagine listening to this in the summer somewhere round the great lakes/North Ontario while watching the sun set and blowing smoke rings.
I’ll do this on Lake Michigan in your honor.
Every song from Boards of Canada is the sound track for the heroes of our time.
This is beautiful. Pure bliss and perfection.

I have never seen another match this sound of BOC (even in remix) but build on it in the same terroir. Cheers Helios and BOC for the wins.
