Peter, in addition to shipping, you will also have to pay the 7.5% import taxes when you bring Chinese antiques to the US, even though the items are from UK, not from China ! So along with auction premium and shipping, buyer will likely end up paying 40%+ more over the hammer price - that's A LOT !!

Antiques, including Chinese Antiques, have a 0% tariff in the US. Someone is doing your import papers wrong. You should just have to pay the about $40 fee for formal entry and then bring as much in as you want in that shipment.

@@Classics990 Yes - antiques in general over 100 years old do not incur import taxes in US. BUT, Chinese antiques are different since they were "originated" in China. The tariff started couple years before Covid as a result of the broad trade war btw US and China. The rate on antiques is currently 7.5%.

RE painting of the Summer Palace: even if there, the stone boat would likely be out of sight in this picture, as it's at the end of the red promenande at the bottom of the hill on the right.

Hi Peter, at some time can you explain what an "opening bid" is in online auctions? As a UK collector I don't understand what it means.

This probably seems like a dumb question but in the UK at a live auction the starting bid is where we bid after the bids that have been left 'on the book' are declared by the auctioneer. I don't understand if the process is similar on line. Does the starting bid increase as people leave their bids. Otherwise it often seems totally unrelated to the estimate.

@@AndyHunt-f2p it's where the bidding starts.

@@AndyHunt-f2p The Opening Bid is where the auctioneer starts the bidding. If there are no bidders yet then the opening bid number is decided by the auction house and the seller, otherwise it is the result of the 2nd highest absentee bid. That "on the book" statement refers to absentee bids placed before the start of the auction. When one bidder places an absentee bid several increments above the next highest bidder, then in-room bidders bid in increments against the absentee bidder. The opening bid and the estimate are unrelated. Often the opening bid is far below the estimate and the reserve to encourage bidding.

@@Classics990 that makes sense. Thank you.
