I think you were probably given special privileges because I’m a labor nurse and a photographer and most hospitals do not allow video recording at all.
Amazing tips KJ! Do you think this would be doable with a 6D MarkII?? I can’t afford an R6 right now, so would the non 4K video work as well? I’m due in September and really want photos of my baby’s birth.
This was so fascinating to learn about! I gave birth in April at the beginning of the pandemic, and this would have been such a SUCH resource to figure out how to DIY our own photographs. Thanks for the resource!
Thanks for the video! I've actually done this same method for photos with my R5 when I know capturing the right moment would be difficult. Even for small 5 to 10 minute moments when I never know when that ultimate picture will happen until it happens. I have a great 1TB Delkin CF Express card, and I record 8K Raw, which means, I was taking 35mp images at 30 frames a second, with full audio and FULL Raw controls. That's why I use it. It's been incredible for those situations where I just need to save time and get the perfect shot. The R6 in 4K for screen images is amazing too! Would you have considered recording in C-Log to squeeze in a bit more dynamic range in the screen grabs, or do you feel that using a regular picture profile was enough, under your conditions? I'm assuming you'd rather have a final looking image right from the get-go.
:( you had me and my husband in tears, i never would of thought to capture a stillbirth. completely makes sense and after having our first son this year i cant even imagine the pain. big hugs
Thanks for sharing. I filmed and photographed my son's birth but didn't get to be in any of the photos. Why not use a separate camera to do interval timer as well and get a shot every second?
Given today's paranoia about legal issues, I am amazed and pleasantly surprised that hospitals allow cameras into the delivery room, while giving birth, whether you are doing it yourself or hiring a photographer. If hospital staff cause something to go wrong, no matter how rare an occurrence, it is then well documented. For that reason alone, I'm a little surprised they allow it, even while I'm happy they do.
At our hospital there is no video or photos allowed until 5 min after the baby is born. I guess for liability reasons. So sad. Glad you were able to video yours!
Thank you so much for sharing. I kinda wish you had this experience a few years ago. We had our last and a surprise (gender and at all) baby a couple years ago. We hired a photographer to capture the moment and despite being in labor for 14 hours with her aware the entire time she still missed the birth by 5 mins. It's been hard to heal from. I think daily about how I should have trusted myself to do it.
I have some friends who are birth photographers and they have still been shooting during all of this only they do home births. I know that's not for everyone and I honestly don't know if you can change to a home birth in the middle to the end of a pregnancy but that could be another option to still get photos if you are doing a natural birth anyway.
It's not crazy to say that at all. If I *had* to choose between having my wedding photographerd vs. having my baby's birth photographed, I'd choose the birth. This said, I do want to have both Edit: gosh, that short clip from the video was so beautiful!
Thank you!! I’m delivering in 5 weeks and am in the predicament of not having a photographer either or someone to even take phone pictures so this is something I’ll be trying this with my fingers crossed 🤞🏻

We were told it was up to the ob or midwife on call.

rent it for a week or so :)
I like Brians idea of renting! I am hopeful that hospitals will allow more people. September will be here before you know it!
Great idea Brian!
@@Tainted-Soul Good idea! Thanks!

Oh no! I would ask the ob when you are in the room just to see if they would be ok with it. Sorry that is the protocol

Oh no! So sorry to hear that Linda!

That thought crossed our mind! But was too overwhelming haha! Thanks for watching!

You can do it! And check with your OB some hospitals in Virginia are changing who is allowed in the room and allowing more people!
Glad you were able to capture his birth. When my grandchildren were born the hospital said no camera or phone during birth.
wow! that is hard!
All with one camera
So excited for this video. I’m exciting my first baby in October.
SO EXCITING!!
Love this. So helpful.
