    The 2017 Cadillac XT5 in this video had P0128 code for the check engine light, a steering assist reduced message, a coolant temperature gauge that constantly read cold, and an always-on high engine fan speed. The thermostat and coolant temperature sensor were then replaced. Problem solved.
    Part I used in this video.
    GM# 12678779 thermostat x 1
    GM# 12648547 coolant air bleeder tube O-ring x 2
    GM# 12648665 Intake manifold gasket x 6

    This is a common problem with the GM 3.6 V6 at 50-60k. The dealer will replace if still under powertrain warranty; if not expect $1,200 -$1,500 bill. Dealers have a high overhead and charge a lot of money for repairs. Most professional garages (I'm not talking about the corner gas station) can fix for little more than half the cost. But it is a pain in the rear to replace, about 3-5 hours work depending on how familiar the mechanic is with the repair. I'd talk to your independent shop and politely ask them if they have experience with GM 3.6 V6 with the P0128 code. My mechanic just rolled his eyes and said "You've got to be kidding me. At least one a month."

    Great video! I have seen a few videos on this topic band they did not drain the coolant. They removed another tube but I don't remember which one. I have a 2017 XT5 and about a year ago it had 70K and that error popped up. Took into the dealer where I purchased the car and they said it was my battery? It was over 5 years old and they replaced it and the message has not come back since?? Good to have this video since I am sure it is out of warranty now with 80K miles! Looking for 2017 XT5 spark plug change video if you have one!

    Just did mine. Didn't have to take the thermostat out to change the sensor but need some trick sockets with a wobble drive shaft and swivel. If I had to do it all over again would take out the thermostat. Though not needed but makes the hob harder if you don't have an extensive socket wrench set.

      The thinkobd 100 work pretty good for me. It dose the basic engine code reading, and some get some usful live engine data, for example, short and long term fuel trim for air leaks or fuel leaks diagnostic, engine coolant temperature reading, induction air temperature reading, and etc..

  • @jamesward5493

    It turned out on my 2017 model
    The coolant resivouir cap is a 20 psi cap which raises the boiling temperature 2 degrees for 1 psi equals 40 degrees. The cap was bad not allowing the boiling temperature to raise 40 degrees. It was opening too soon and leaking coolant fluid at a lower psi. So the operating temperature could not rise to the needed temperature. I replaced the cap and everything is operating properly.

    I had the same problem, but my problem was constant IE: Fans on high, no temperature reading, steering assist reduced. I replaced only the temperature sending unit with a GM Part. This did not fix the problem. So I disconnected the battery let it set and then reconnected. The issue went away, everything went to normal for about a week. Then it happened again, once again I disconnected the battery, everything went to normal for about a week, then it happened again. I am on the fourth time now, thinking about changing the thermostat not sure why this would have anything to do with it. Also thinking about checking the sending unit plug connector.
    I am at a loss. The engine is not overheating, the last time I drove for about 30 miles it ran fine. Any suggestions ?

    • @1990neill
      @1990neill 5 місяців тому +1

      It is likely the thermostat. The steering assist gets a temp reading from the coolant temp sensor. this allows it to estimate the viscosity of the grease in the system to either provide more assist when cold or less when its hot as the grease is thinner when warmed up. When the computer recognizes that the operating temp has not been met within a certain amount of time, it will cut off the temp sensor data, dropping the coolant gauge to 0 and forcing cooling fans to max as a failsafe mode. since the car then has no cooling data to go off of, it is playing it safe by having fans at max and no ac to reduce heat load. even though the car is not overheating but underheating. Replacing thermostat will more than likely fix the problem. There is a TSB on the lgx engine and this problem due to how common the oem thermostats for this engine go bad.
      Unplugging the battery is a temp *solution* since it will clear the ending codes. when thee is no codes the sensor and car functions go back to default and temp readings will work until the computer deems a underheating problem again, pinging the code into pending and rinse repeat above. too low of temp could cause problems with bearings and sludge in engine. due to coolant sensor being cheap people say replace it while doing thermostat as a preventative situation of possibly having to take it apart again if the sensor does go bad. using a scan tool live data function can inform the exact problem. In my instance, its just like the tsb describes and is the thermostat. My thermostat is opening too soon and getting stuck at times. With engine temps most of the time running at 180 most of the time and occasionally higher but it is supposed to be ~200-208.
      There are a couple other situations to check with a mechanic and have them confirm one such could be the coolant reservoir cap not sealing completely, a good mechanic should be able to narrow and confirm the exact problem or problems related to the system. all parts from dealer should cost ~120-140 plus mechanic labor rates. labor is about 1-3ish hours including drain and fill of cooling system. If coolant is original and many years old or high mileage, not much more for some fresh coolant, this would also be a perfect time for that but not necessarily a must.

      Did you change the thermostat, and the coolant temperature sensor together? If you did, you can use an engine scanner to check if the coolant temperature sensor is probably reading, and use a pressure tool to check coolant reservoir cap can hold the proper pressure.
      Is the coolant level good?

      Needs a thermostat. Ct sensor generally is not the problem. Do not tear engine apart. Remove the thermostat while removing it from the pipe at rear of motor. Yes it's a pita but it can be done. P0128 and there is a gm tsb on this.

      @ezauto1911  3 місяці тому

      Can you use an OBD code reader to see if there is any code? If you have P0128, this is the code related to the coolant temperature sensor. If the code present and the cooling temperature sensor not reading in the ODB reader it could cause the AC not turning on and power steering assist the message because of the false cooling temperature reading. I know some people disconnect the battery, or use an OBD reader to rest the code, and it could bring back the coolant temperature gauge reading.
