Hey David - count me as another extremely grateful viewer. I watched this video after looking up the P0128 code that I had pulled for free at O'Reilly. I took my 2018 XT5 into the dealership and LOOONNG story short - I picked up my car yesterday after only paying the diagnostic fee of ~$85. This video gave me what I needed to make sure I didn't get charged for repair that was under warranty. I didn't even know the powertrain warranty (6 year, 70K miles) passed through multiple owners. Thanks again!

great stuff. I was searching to find the DIY video to resolve this problem on my 2017 XT5. I took this to the dealer after seeing this and learning it was covered under the 6year, 70k PT Warranty. Fortunately I have low miles and the problem occurred before the 6 year mark. Part is on backorder, but dealer is fixing at no cost. Gauge stayed below the C, radiator fans stayed on, auto stop stopped working, steering assist message, and P0128 code were my symptoms. Thanks David - awesome stuff.

This video just saved me $1400! I had this exact problem, booked an appointment at the dealership and referenced the service bulletin you mentioned. The dealership called me today and told me that it would be $1400 with parts and labor. I asked them why it’s not covered under my 6 year powertrain warranty. He looked it up and it was! I didn’t pay a dime! Having bought the vehicle used, I never would have known to ask that question. Thank you so much!!

Incredible video, I was just looking online to confirm the part I needed to order 🙂, the Service Bulletin and Powertrain Warranty just blew my mind!!! We have a 2018 with 62k miles and it has all symptoms you say, but we have not noticed it restarting too soon, nor anything with the AC. We called our Cadillac and have an appointment tomorrow to see what they say. I just had my water outlet (Thermostat) replaced on my 2019 Cadillac XT5 by my dealership. My vehicle had just over 54,000 miles when I encountered the "Steering Assist Reduced - Drive with Care" message on my DIC display. Thank you David! I have found on my 2019 that I just reset the code and all is well. I have tested the actual temp with a high quality IR gun. It is getting hotter than LOW. Once the system gets 'stuck', all you need to do is a Code reset. This appears to me to be a 'Program issue', or a poor sensor. However, my technical education, and hands on experience tells me this is a fluke, not a Real problem. None of the true tests I ran during and after these notices, confirmed a High or Low temperature before or after the thermostat, (as far as I could determine), and the coolant was neither too hot or low.
You are a wonderful spokesperson; a pleasure to listen. Thanks for your time.

I bought my XT5 Premium Luxury trim with 61K miles. So it was still under the powertrain warranty when I had the exact same code and symptoms. I called the Cadillac dealer and the person on the phone told me it was a very common problem and replacing the thermostat would take care of it. I asked him if it was covered under the powertrain warranty and he said no. So I had the code erased with a scan tool and had no more problems for a while. Then the same problems came back with the same P0128 code. Now my car is over 70k miles and if I want to get it replaced I have to pay out of pocket. It’s a shame how dealerships, even Cadillac, are scumbag crooks. If you didn’t point it out in this video, I still would’ve believed the dealer. I hope it helps others since my issue happened way before this video was made. Big thanks for doing this sir!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! If it wasn’t for this video I would have paid $1,000 more for Cadillac to correct the problem that they knew existed in 2017. Unfortunately, my 6-year powertrain warranty had expired over 3000 miles before I became aware of the problem. But I was able to show this video/information to the Cadillac dealer and ask that they honor the warranty. They came back with “we will only charge you $400”, which I still think was a dirty dog thing to do. What type of country do we live in when a company can knowingly sell a defective product and don’t have to tell its customers because it isn’t considered a safety hazard? And just how much money has Cadillac made from its customers to fix a problem that they caused? $400 tells me that’s probably all it really cost to fix it. Yet, they quoted me $1,400. MAKING MONEY OFF DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS SHOULD BE A CRIME IN THIS COUNTRY! There isn’t many places where business can get away with this so why is GM allowed to do it? I pity the people who don’t go to UA-cam first like I did. This person took the time to document the total history of this issued. And no doubt, saves consumers thousands upon thousands of dollars. Hats off to you, my friend!!!

Good information! I literally just did this repair yesterday on a customer's 2017 XT5. Thermostat was stuck open most of the time, giving the P0401 code in the Power Steering Control Module for faulty information coming from the ECM. Also, the customer complained of poor cabin heat now that it's colder weather. Flat rate was 4.4 hours for the thermostat replacement along with a $140 bill at the GM parts department for the thermostat.

I watched your other video on the start-stop function because my XT5 was having the exact same symptoms as yours. Sure enough, when I changed the battery, it fixed the problem.
However, shortly after that, I started getting the same error message you have in this video related to the thermostat, along with my fan running at full speed and my temperature gauge not working. I found it odd that the exact same problems happened to both our cars in the same order.
That's when it occurred to me that maybe this thermostat error has nothing to do with the thermostat itself. I thought maybe It's possible that when I changed the battery, the old codes weren't cleared. So, I went to my local parts shop and asked them to check the codes to see if they pointed to the thermostat.
On a hunch, I asked them to wipe all the codes from the computer. To my surprise, that worked! My car is now working fine with no problems. The fan is not running at top speed, and there are no error messages.
I wanted to share this message because I think many people might watch your video and then spend a lot of money to get a new thermostat put in, when all they had to do was wipe all the codes after replacing the battery.

My 2019 xt5 has an “action required “ steering assist reduced
And fan running at 100% thermostat needle at C and AC is not working
I would say it’s a safe bet that this is the cause
Now I have the pleasant task of explaining to the service center I’ve diagnosed the problem through a you tube video
    Thanks again

I have the same issue with a GMC Acadia 2018. Was your dealership able to get the part? Mine says they're backordered and have no idea when they'll be able to get more.

So I take it in today they apparently are so busy and schedule so full I had to schedule service 2 weeks out.. but they wouldn’t take my word for it on the part and assured me they have no prob and have the part. Funny thing is about a week ago thermostat started to work again stopped getting the driver assist message and AC works. But picked up a nail in my tire and local tire place won’t repair or replace tire Explanation because tread is low and because it’s awd my only option is to replace all 4 tires and that’s the only thing they will do
Lease is literally up in 8 weeks
So luckily it’s still holding air and going to the dealership today and it’s car shopping time. I am so looking forward to this process:. I rather go to the dentist

Great video. I was just quoted $1200 by my Cadillac dealer to fix this issue on my 2017 XT5 with 75000 miles. We were never notified of the GM Service issue by GM or the dealer- no doubt as a means of making the customer (me) pay for GM’s poor quality and high “design for repair” cost. Before this - my experience with GM was great. However, obviously the customer is no longer important to them. They just lost my future car and truck purchases.

David, Thanks for your video, do you have and scan of the bulletins that you show us, because as you know in the dealer all the time when we talk about a recall or bulletin, they say they don't know, the codes appears in the scanner is the P0128 and U0422 Rear differential clutch control module, I think this two codes are crashing and make the P0128 can clear with the scanner, I need to disconnect the battery positive wire for reset the ECU, and the gauge work properly again, but it just work for a few week, it;s that because I don't think it is a thermostat.

I'm having this same issue right now with my 2017 XT5 with 72000 miles I also keep getting the error message for steering assist reduced, my ac dosent blow cold, and my heat dosent heat up that well. My temp gage stays on cold and I do hear fans blowing when I stop and turn off my car and the engine light comes on. Then suddenly everything will be ok for a while. But I'm going to go ahead and get it fixed. My repair will cost $680 bucks!!! This is my 1st actual problem since purchasing this car.

It came back & I was resolved to spend ~$1000 at a local shop to avoid the dealer rates. Thanks for the tip on the power train warranty. I think I have 4 months left on my 2017 XT5 (42,000mi). I bought a code reader that also erases error codes and when I erased the code the problem went away. Either its an intermittent temperature sensor or computer monitoring error. I don't think it's mechanically related at all.

My 2018 xt5 started doing same thing. I watched several you tube videos which other people were having similar problems. He found that toping the antifreeze reservoir off to cold fill mark reversed the steering warning, A/C only blowing hot air and radiator fan blowing at top speed. Well, I topped my antifreeze reservoir off and my car stopped all the nonsense too. It didn’t do it all at once. The temperature guage started registering after driving the car about 5 miles. Then the other issues gradually went away. My suggestion is to have the service techs take the cap off the antifreeze reservoir after it cools down and loolk inside the reservoir to check the fluid level. I couldn’t look at the reservoir and tell what the antifreeze level either. Evidentally, a small drop starts the senario I described.

Hello David , I was having the steering assist problem on my 2019 Cadillac XT5. I watched your video regarding this many times. I had the dealership replace my thermostat-engine coolant outlet pipe and my ECT sensor. The steering message on the dash went away as well as all of the error codes but my auto stop and my air conditioning are still not working!! Any thoughts?? They told me that it's probably separate issues but I never had auto stop or air conditioning problems prior to the steering assist issue?? I don't know much about UA-cam or how to look for your response? Can you tell me were to look for your response. I really appreciate your help in this matter.

I had the same issues with my 2017 XT5. The same error message " The steering assist" and the air conditioning would blow warm. These messages only came up when using the back up key fab. When I used my wife's primary key fab there were no issues. I know it sounds crazy, but I think the saved settings on the back up fab affects some of the electronic sensors including the thermostat settings.

WHOA!!!! MIND BLOWN!!!! I have had this same issue for awhile. But it comes and goes. Usually whenever I return from monthly air travel, it starts acting up. But after awhile the message will go away, the a/c will return to normal and the check engine light will go out. However after I return from the next month's trip the problem returns. I thought someone at the airport long term parking was tampering with my vehicle when I park it monthly. But it's not. I use my backup key fob when traveling so that I can leave my primary keys with the house sitter. WOW! Thank you!!!

Hey everyone, just to let you know I had this problem twice and this most recent time I found out that GM has finally released just the housing itself without the pipes. It is part number 12678780. It looks like the thermostat has come out from what I can see in October 2023 and does have that new part number so I’m hoping that that fixes any future problems. Like I said this is just the thermostat housing so that you won’t have to remove it from your old Assembly, or purchase the whole pipe assembly this is just the one part and I am thrilled that GM has decided to release this and it has also released new install directions, which are far less complicated than they had been in the past. Hope this helps!

Our has done this but then starts to work again. It’s been working and not working on and off. Any idea why it does come back on? We have tried to isolate when it occurs. Heavy rains or frequent humidity triggers it and then after a while it may dry up and it starts working again.
Any ideas besides , yes we are getting it fixed but the part is back ordered. Ours is out of warranty which doesn’t make sense since it’s a very known problem.

I had my thermostat on a 2018 XT5 replaced last week. The sales clerk then showed me a photo of a fuel injector and said I also needed service. It sounded a bit fishy when I asked him to send me the photo - he refused. When replacing a thermostat would the fuel injectors be open for viewing by a technician? Thanks.

This is a common problem with the GM 3.6 V6 at 50-60k. The dealer will replace if still under powertrain warranty; if not expect $1,200 -$1,500 bill. Dealers have a high overhead and charge a lot of money for repairs. Most professional garages (I'm not talking about the corner gas station) can fix for little more than half the cost. But it is a pain in the rear to replace, about 3-5 hours work depending on how familiar the mechanic is with the repair. I'd talk to your independent shop and politely ask them if they have experience with GM 3.6 V6 with the P0128 code. My mechanic just rolled his eyes and said "You've got to be kidding me. At least one a month."
