    You can just search "Xbox 360 torx" on eBay for the screwdriver bit. They're really cheap.
    This video will show you how to fix an Xbox 360 Power Supply. I bought my Xbox 360 Slim a little over a year ago and it's already malfunctioning. The fan stops working and shuts down my xbox. The green light on the power supply turns red and it shuts down. I contacted customer support and since I'm out of my 1 year warranty, they would have to charge me $35 + shipping to send me a replacement power supply. I figure, might as well try to fix the one I have so that's what I did. It did fix the problem of my xbox shutting off after a short period, but unfortunately, it's still making a bit of noise. Better than nothing though.

    The lamp was yellow and flickering. Then not lit at all. So, began to clean the fan with an air gun... it works again. There was not a lot of dust at all. I also removed the exhaust port baffle, which you can see once your in there. I also drilled a hole so its a direct exhaust instead of the two small slits.
    Thanks

    Make sure that your AC adapter isn't plugged into a surge protecter (extension outlet, power strip etc.), but in a wall outlet instead.

    • @TippyHippy
      @TippyHippy 7 років тому +6

      Try cutting out the top of an empty tissue box and placing the "power supply" on the edges of the now open faced box so it is laying at a completely flat angle. This will greatly help with ventilation by keeping the device cool since the only thing it is resting on are the edges of the cardboard. I did this with my power supply that kept overheating and showing a red light and I didn't even need to clean the fan as shown in the video. Still keep it plugged into a wall outlet though. If the problem still persists, then also try cleaning it as shown in the video.

      TippyHippy97 well see i dont have a right light my 360 slim would turn on then turn off

    • @TippyHippy
      @TippyHippy 7 років тому +5

      It's always been a red light for me so that's all the advice I can give. Nevertheless if your power supply is really hot when everything turns off then the tissue box method may provide assistance. Always keep it plugged into a wall outlet no matter what though because it's the only power source designed for all 360's.

    T8 Torx (security) screwdriver is required for those wondering. About $1-5 on amazon. I suggest ordering them, I use it on all kinds of stuff. Most of the time, lack of performance/speed on an electronic devices comes from dirty fans and circuitry, a quick clean helps everything out... (No dust= no moisture retention on your circuitry!)
    I replaced my first slim on warranty, the second I decided to get down to the bottom of it. If you are getting a RED light on your power supply, it is more than likely due to overheating. This video is a great tool to help save yourself $40 on buying a new power supply.
    You WILL need a T8 Torx screwdriver to do this without damaging the power supply. The inside screws on the fan "require" 2 smaller phillip's head screw drivers, I got them out with a knife. As a side not though, the screws on the power supply are very hard to loosen without the right tools.

    Question: My 360 has been behaving exactly like you describe in your video - however, after shutting down, I still have a solid orange light on the Power Brick, which (according to Xbox Support) means proper power is still getting to the Power Brick.
    Did you observe / notice whether or not the light was solid orange, blinking orange, red, or not at all (or even solid green)?
    Not sure if this matters, just trying to get a little more info before I tear the damn thing apart.
    Thx.

    Not sure how the comments work now, but in case anyone sees this you'll want to grab TT10 if you're looking for something that open up your power brick. I grabbed the TT8 and it's not even big enough to strip anything. I see a whole set for 10 dollars on Amazon, but I paid 2 dollars for the TT8, the shipping costs more. Anyways, I found the TT10 for the same price and now I get to enjoy another week waiting. Like I said, if you're trying to just buy exactly what you need, to open the brick up and clean it, grab the TT10

    • @matthewnickl9871
      @matthewnickl9871 10 років тому +2

      Also if your brick needs cleaned it's a good bet to just grab T8 _and_ T10 so if you ever need to clean the optical drive, which just may need to be done, you have everything you need to open it up.

    I'll relay a bit of info. On the jasper psus, the blower wheel will pull off from the motor base and this allows really easy cleaning. While its off I would add a drop of oil just to be safe. If you take some time and are careful you can locate where to drill a small hole to allow the canned air straw to be inserted into fan area, to allow much better cleaning without having to open the psu again. I made a larger hole so I can check from time to time than the fan is not dirty and still spins.

    this does actually work, but you can use a brush pastry brush instead of a air compressor, my Xbox 360 slim would shut down and show a red light on the power supply, basically ur fan from ur power cable has collected to much dirt, all you need is a t10 tork screwdriver head, and a #1 and #0 Phillips, they are electrician tools, you don't need a compressor, just a painting brush, to clean out the dirt, clean it throughly, this is a good video it works

    Thanks a lot buddy, this tutorial saved me $40.00+
    If anybody needs clarification, the "security bit" used to open the power supply housing is a T-10 sized tamperproof bit for electronics... It's a six-sided, star-shaped bit (like a security bit), except it has a small indentation in the middle to receive the tamperproof peg in the middle of the housing's screws. Don't strip your security bits or xbox screws, go to Home Depot and get yourself a tamperproof bit set for $15.

    Thanks for the guide. I panicked when I saw the security bit. Googled it saw a 33pcs set on eBay and it looked awfully familiar. Then I remembered I had one. All done and cleaned out. My fan still spins more than yours appears to in the video. There was a lot of buildup at the exhaust end. So its a wait and see. I had already ordered a new PS. But this will tie me over till it arrives and can always be an emergency spare. This will keep my 8 month old daughter happy with her Wiggles videos.

    A word of advice, if you have a power supply with the cord that connects to the Xbox already attached to it, check the prongs in the cord; NOT the box itself.They could be bent and fixed with tweezers/a small sharp object. Just don't break them. This happened to me even though my power supply was orange and my Xbox kept shutting down.

  • @timvu3095

    I had the similar problem with the red light on the brick and random power shutdown but no noise from the power supply. I did similar disassembling of the power supply brick and sure enough there are enough dusks in there that restricted the air flow. It does not stop the fan, but it lowered the air flow from the outside enough that the power brick case is very hot when it was thermally shut down. I used a vacuum instead to suck all the dusts out and use the cotton swap with alcohol to do the rest of the fan and air inlet cleaning in the housing. There are a lot of dusts under the fan and in the inlet port on the side of the brick and I got them all cleaned up. Putting the parts back together in reverse order and it is humming along ever since. I think this is a bad design from MS for having such a small fan to keep it cool and such small outlets for air inlet and hot air outlets and they are clogged easily after a year or so using the Xbox 360 playing games and watching movies. At least I figured out the air flow through fan issue and opened it up and fixed it, most people would throw it in the trash and bought another one. Million of these will end up in landfills with the toxic capacitors, such an environmental waste disaster.

    well to add to this, if you don't have a T10 bit use a red hot jigsaw blade and press it into the seams along where the screw slots are located, to reseal just use tape. next pro tip for the noise is to remove the fan as inthe video above and lift the fan it is only secured by a magnet, now grab some basic cooking oil or gease, preferably without water and using your figer tip only rub it underneath the fan part not the motor. this will get rid of the annoying buzzing noise with is caused by friction and thus futher lowering the workload on the power supply itself.

    I hate to post stack, but also for people who can run things other than GTAV (Like Netflix fine) remember that 2/3 of the Xbox360 Hardware are reserved for gaming, and when that hardware kicks in, the power draw goes up as well. And when power draw goes up, the heat produced goes up. Just because you can run other things doesn't mean its not overheating. The best diagnostic tip is to find another PSU and try that.

    My same model is doing the same thing, and i did clean mine out too. but for the noise like a whirring noise, that is likely the bearing in the fan itself and just needs lubrication, a simple VERY light spritz of WD-40 or some kind of lubricant on the fan will solve that issue, just make sure it gets in there by manually turning the fan itself. i know this as i had to do the same to not only my fan but other similar "brushless fans" like this one.
    fun fact: my power brick not only had dust clumps in it but also some live roaches too! (granted i did buy it from a local pawn shop)

    the fan in that power supply looks to have had failed bearings because it wasn't spinning freely, usually if you blow on the fan it should spin by itself for a few seconds. i suggest a short spray of wd-40 or other spray oil once taken apart to free it a little but the problem will continue if the fan is not replaced or if you don't have the skills then buy a new power supply

    @DINKYDANA dont blow the canned air directly into the power supply's fan as you could accidentally damage the fan and its bearings to a point where it will actually be STUCK, meaning, it will not spin at all, no matter what you do. Same goes for a computers heatsink fan (the object that sits directly on top of the processor), the power supply (which you should never dissasemble, even if the computer has been off for 24+ hours since it can store residual power), the graphics card, and the chasis and case fans themselves. Next time, use a vacuum cleaner with the hose attachment on very low power, that will ensure complete dust removal.

    Your problem sounds like it'd be more of an issue with the disk drive. If the power supply isn't even hot, it'd likely mean that it's something within your xbox causing the problem. I would recommend installing all your games to hard drive to maybe relieve some of the stress on the drive.

    Mine has been having this "Red Light" issue since before GTAV, but GTAV pushed it from once a month (Maybe) to several times a day (Sometimes never though). The Power Supply, specifically the point closest to the fan vent is quite hot to the touch though, uncomfortably so.
    For people who think they're having insufficient Power issues, try connecting the PSU directly to the wall outlet (Not into a Surge protector) and removing all USB accessories. Unplug the power before removing the USB devices

  • @stevenk1446

    Once the power supply is out instead of using canned air clean the fan with a product known as mass air flow sensor cleaner this cleaner will evaporate next to immediately therefore it will flush the fan and will no longer make the noise

    @TechKidusa actually the red light you're talking about shows on the Xbox console not the power supply and the red light on the power supply means that it has only overheated like the person in this video is showing you.

    I took mine apart to check the fan was clean. Very little dust and spinned smoothly. My wonder right now is it a blower or a sucker since the way mine was mounted it was blowing off to one corner and not end to end. Also mine is a Jasper [I think] and it only had 3 screws and no tape though white caulky looking stuff around the board.

  • @Cann1balCorps3

    After taking apart the adapter and the fan cover is off. Pull the fan blade off dont worry its held in by magnets. Then clean the fan blade with an old toothbrush or something. And on the back of the fan blade theres a steel pin, oil the steel pin well. It gets dry and rubs making alot of vibrations and the tendancy to get stuck. Your welcome.

    @Nicholas, I've been having the same problem that this guy in the video has for about a year now! And I have to continually take it apart and try to clear out dust. But it's not getting any better! So just yesterday I ordered a power adaptor for $5, it lets you use any old xbox battery for the slim! But in your case first make sure it's not plugged into a power strip, then I'd suggest trying a different wall outlet, if that doesn't work it could just be something in your battery circuit board!
