Hey chris. Just want to remind you that everyone who is watching your channel feels thankful even if we don't say so by commenting or liking the video. You are like the best teacher we could ask for. Keep doing what you are doing and thank you for all the knowledge
when Chris says "I was the kid who would sit in the front . I was the kid leaning in to the lectures and critiques of other people's work", I related to it so much! I'm just like that! my classmates hate it when I do that tho haha!
Your work ethic has really inspired me since way back when I stumbled on your channel; watched, re-watched and even took (lots of) notes from your podcasts, and realized my own love for design and how it's worth taking risks just to continue doing what I'm passionate about. Now, I'm just about to start my freshman year at art uni and this has really strengthened my resolve to make the most of what I've got. Thank you, sincerely, from a fan.
It's true, coming from a poor background means there's no plan b and that we must succeed. i spent a year trying to learn through online sources but felt i wasnt at the level i could be if i had the structure of an educational establishment. so i applied to art center and was accepted. i havent started school yet but sometimes i question my decision because the cost of tuition is so high and it discourages me before ive even tried.
Thanks for sharing Chris. I'm going to have my son watch this as he doesn't always here my voice. ha, and that's ok, I know it takes time and maturing. He is actually my step son and has been a part of my life for the last 3 years. I will do whatever it takes to help guide, mentor and support him. I had a similar experience. I was average in high school, but put it into high gear when I was accepted the second time around to the graphic design & advertising program in Toronto. I worked hard and have been privileged to work in TO, Shanghai, Philly, Vancouver, Hawaii, San Diego and now Bellevue WA. All those places were my choice to live as I've run my own business since 2005. I did not come from money. I get anxiety once in while maybe due to the money thing, but I kill it with confidence so that I can keep supporting a fam of 4, giving back and living a comfortable lifestyle. Speaking of confidence, your video's that I recently discovered has helped with that boost plus guide me in a slightly new direction. Thank you!
so glad to hear Jason. best of luck to you as parenting is probably the most difficult job in the world. you can't "fire" your family, so you just have to support them.
Going through a design program myself right now. Honestly took me two semesters to realize I actually need to start picking shit up and to get focused on my work. Now I'm focused on getting the most out of my program (i'm not that great at what I learn but I enjoy it haha) in hopes to make it somewhere big. It really is about realizing where the faults are and understanding that nobody is going to give you anything unless you start working hard. Keep these kinds of talks going!
Fully agree with your State of mind Mr Do. When I was studying architecture, I was also attending courses at the Beaux-arts in Paris to learn physiological morphology (Wich is kind of anatomical courses plus it teaches you how the body structure and muscles react according to poses and movement) the teacher was great, you didn't have to enroll, pay or pass any exam, just drawing and learning. It was a good complement to structure courses at architecture school. So yes, don't narrow your stakes while studying, keep it open. And work!
Fascinating video. Great to see the passion you have for design. I loved design from a young age, but discovered my passion for the field as I’ve become older. I teach design now and it’s my passion to pass on that passion to my students. I’m just starting to get somewhere with my UA-cam channel. It’s great to see you doing so well!
So true. Sometimes I wish my parents would pay for my college, but then I realize that if I wasn't breaking my back for what I wanted to be doing then I would have no real passion for it! If it was handed to me, I wouldn't want it as much
This came at just the right time...I'm from a pretty wealthy background, my parents have connections, I guess there's things I can fall back on if I fail...but yeah I feel like I am pretty soft and unmotivated I don't know how to change that, don't know how Chris woke up one morning and changed his life
I'm about right in the same trail as you bud... I just do my best to get everything done on my own without anyone's help... forcing myself to find my own connections and not through others.
you got get hungry Matt. Realize that you have to make it on your own terms. perhaps you can try an outdoor adventure where connections and wealth won't help you. learn something about the stuff you're truly made of.
@Matt maybe you could volunteer for a worthy cause. Seen as you don't have to work to pay for tuition, which is great. You might learn to be grateful and motivated, after you get to see what others have to go through. It will also help you see a broader view of society and helping another human being is a reward in itself.
So freaking true about uncles and relations. Unlike my father who is the eldest of family. Overall people have lost their ethics and soon they will start eating each other.
Thank you. Thank you for putting your story out there. It strengthens me, I feel you bro (4:05 there not laughing now)and I appreciate you. Keep up the great work. #thefutur #HEARTNHUSTLE
It's funny, in school I had a blanket and pillow with me and I used to just be there 24/7, sleeping under a desk for an hour or two and pushing on, got friendly with the cleaning staff who came in at 5am ;)
I believe I have an incredible work ethic. But I find myself trying to focus on to many dreams. I must focus on the one which is my craft as a designer and entrepreneur.
that's a paradoxical statement. you are trying to "focus" on too many dreams? focus implies the elimination of distractions. that's probably what you need to do jarmelo.
100%, thanks for sharing your experience in college. Honestly i can totally relate. I'm from Africa and if you wanna get anywhere in life you gotta do it yourself or make the most of what you have. Sometimes people living in a first world country don't appreciate the resources they have. #rant lol
Hey Cris, I got accepted in 3 schools CalArts, Otis, and Ucla all of them in the graphic design department (design media arts UCLA) . I choose Otis, because I felt a big connection with the school and the work they're producing seems better. But almost everyone says Otis is not serious, its horrible etc etc. What do you think? did I made the right choice?
Me and him are basically the same; upper middle class, I dont qualify for any aid, but my parents aren't covering half my tuition. Trying to find scholarships because I'm trying to go to SCAD which is v expensive. dunno what I'll do.
thurnis haley SCAD is awesome but the ridiculous price isn’t worth it. There are plenty of great schools that cost a fraction of the money. I got into SCAD and wanted to go but couldn’t afford it. I ended up being really happy with my experience at a state school.
well first congrats on getting accepted at all, and yeah, after watching this video ive spent my afternoon searching for less expensive, more rural schools. California State Polytechnic Uni is very inexpensive compared to other schools I was looking at and it'd be great to be surrounded by other tech majors, not just art. Thank you!
Hey chris, I had a few teachers in the past that would get sick because they would carry the weight of students that failed and couldn't understand how to draw/design. What's that balance of being a great teacher, but not so invested that it's hurting you physically and emotionally?
you have to realize that you don't the power to make someone want do something they don't want to do. worrying about it is counterproductive. i wish i could "make" all of my students great, but all i can do is show them the path. they have to take the steps.
The most important thing I got from this video is that Chris Do is swole!! Geez, if he were to flex his muscle a bit too much the shirt was gonna rip open! Damn Chris! You are in way better shape in I am. Gotta catch up to you on work ethnic, and on fitness. Chris Do can start making a new series of exercise and fitness videos on the UA-cam channel.
The Futur thanks! I can only find UA-cam tutorials that do it in Photoshop with short sequences, but I believe there's a way in premiere pro and after all you guys are the pros 😄
Just purchased UX Masterclass. Thanks for all the free content you put out there and the paid options you have to really grow your business and learn new things. I think I will definitely buy more on thefutur.com later because there is just so much to learn.
Hey chris. Just want to remind you that everyone who is watching your channel feels thankful even if we don't say so by commenting or liking the video. You are like the best teacher we could ask for. Keep doing what you are doing and thank you for all the knowledge
i second this
wholeheartedly
a tip : you can watch series at flixzone. I've been using them for watching all kinds of movies lately.
@Titus Elias yup, I have been using Flixzone for years myself :D
@Titus Elias yup, I've been watching on flixzone for months myself =)
"They're not laughing so much anymore." 🔥
they weren't really ever laughing. it was mostly in my head. but it was the fire that pushed me to succeed.
I'm glad they weren't. But hey, you're still kicking the most ass ;)
Chris Do is my design Dad. Thanks Dad!
Dinsel Amores you’re welcome son.
Dude😄
Wow
when Chris says "I was the kid who would sit in the front . I was the kid leaning in to the lectures and critiques of other people's work", I related to it so much! I'm just like that! my classmates hate it when I do that tho haha!
Bombs of knowledge constantly dropping. Making a figure we can just aspire to become someday. Amazing.
thanks Jose.
The lecture was months ago, but the content is absolutely timeless! Thanks Chris.

All the best, I hope you're doing amazing now ❤️
@@kayaeki thanks for reading, i decided not to go because the debt wouldve been too crushing (i wasnt awarded a big scholarship)

Amazing revelation I've just learned Mr Chris. You have maybe the tiniest recognition of how many people's lives you've touched. I'm a huge recipient
Thanks for letting me know.

I currently moved to Pasadena, CA, from New Jersey and am coming to ArtCenter to study interaction design. This was a good wakeup call.

Mirror image of my life at Art Institute of New York City... preach to the struggle. The hard work and the long night.
One day, one freaking day i will tell my story. i just hope i get through this dark night.
I'm thankful! You'll do it guys, but it would be to short to leave it like that: keep going!
Great advice!
Thank you. Thank you for putting your story out there. It strengthens me, I feel you bro (4:05 there not laughing now)and I appreciate you. Keep up the great work. #thefutur #HEARTNHUSTLE

I believe I have an incredible work ethic. But I find myself trying to focus on to many dreams. I must focus on the one which is my craft as a designer and entrepreneur.

The Futur Thank you for your precious time.

Nice speech
what an interesting story, Chris! very inspirational. Sadly tho, nobody of the crowd was asking anything...
it's okay. they were listening. without them, this conversation would have never happened.
Im really relating to this.
great!
Hey Cris,
I got accepted in 3 schools CalArts, Otis, and Ucla all of them in the graphic design department (design media arts UCLA) .
I choose Otis, because I felt a big connection with the school and the work they're producing seems better. But almost everyone says Otis is not serious, its horrible etc etc. What do you think? did I made the right choice?
sickbaby82js the school does not make the student. If you felt a connection something spoke to you. Trust your gut.
The Futur Thank you 🖒I love this channel by the way.

update: i spent a week at scad for classes and i can definitely say that i no longer want to go there anymore lmao.
Hey chris, I had a few teachers in the past that would get sick because they would carry the weight of students that failed and couldn't understand how to draw/design. What's that balance of being a great teacher, but not so invested that it's hurting you physically and emotionally?

ProjectLifecoach lol 😂 the lighting was kind to me that day.
"they used to laugh, they don't laugh so much anymore...."
Word!
How do you do the duotone effect at the beginning of the video?
i'll ask our editor.
The Futur thanks! I can only find UA-cam tutorials that do it in Photoshop with short sequences, but I believe there's a way in premiere pro and after all you guys are the pros 😄
There is something about gradient map in premiere pro. Look it up little deeper, i'm sure u'll find it.
Dizajn-Zona thanks so much for the help!
Me who discovered this video when I needed this the most 👁👄👁 as an incoming ACCD fall 2021

Just purchased UX Masterclass. Thanks for all the free content you put out there and the paid options you have to really grow your business and learn new things. I think I will definitely buy more on thefutur.com later because there is just so much to learn.
thank you.
OMG all you upper middle class, I feel so bad, it must be so hard for you all...
damn
