- Small Step, yet successful. I have now structurally attached the Boot floor in my classic mini restoration. It is only welded to the bench and top of heel board, however it’s in solid. I have also finished the cross member and attempted to fill a hole within the boot floor panel… disaster.. Thanks for joining my classic mini restoration journey.

Great effort Randy. The discs look cool but if they are a tight fit the metal will expand which will cause problems. I would also adjust the welder settings. Ideally you just want to tack the disc on until there's no room to fit any more tacks in. All the best, Sean
thanks Sean.. the 1" discs are also wonderfully thin (.035), but were still proud on the inside of the boot. This means the boot floor was thinner than .035 in that area.. I did not consider expansion. I will try to sand one down and practice on the old boot floor.. Thanks again..
One thing that didn't cross my mind was the thickness of the discs. If they are thicker, the boot floor will heat up first and maybe contributing to it blowing g through. Thanks for the mention Randy 😆
You're probably right.. I will sand the next one down a little and practice on the old boot floor which I should have done initially...
@@LoneStarMini I temperature now, trying to plug the holes on my scuttle panel, nightmare, then found I had welded one of the wrong holes up.......what a idiot 😆 it's amazing what inthuseasium caused 😆
If you're using Flux Core Wire, you'll blow holes all day. You need to turn your amps down first and hopefully that will reduce blowout.
No Flux Core, but simply a learning curve between how close/far to hold the head, voltage, speed, etc.. I have improved, but when I don't weld for a month or two... I have to re-learn a bit each time. I have currently improved..
Try turning the mig amp down or turn the wire speed up a bit for a cooler weld. Also that seat support is ment to angle to the rear slightly
Thanks Mark. I played with both voltage and wire speed along with the distance of holding the nozzle off the surface to help control the heat. The seat support does angle a bit. I compared with the other minis that I have along with measuring the location on the old floor panel. Any more of an angle, the both the measurement and the alignment on the companion bins would have been off. As for the voltage and wire speed, apparently I still need A LOT of practice.. I appreciate your input!!

I have an entire spreadsheet comparing pricing between all the main suppliers. What I've learned from the spreadsheet and from experience, the best and less expensive route it ordering directly from Mini Spares. They will arrive faster and you pay FAR less.. sometimes half the price. It's still expensive and shipping will hurt, but you still pay far less. I can tell you more detail, but it really is best to go straight to Mini Spares in the UK. I would like to order from M-Machine in the UK, but they are extremely hard to reach from this side of the pond if you don't have international calling (like me).

Randy, I take it the discs are steel & not stainless steel ? also if they fit with no gap at all they will expand with the heat, From what you
sent me on WhatsApp i would say you have the wire speed set too high as your getting too much weld build up, Have you tried the stand
off spot weld style nozzles as this will give you the perfect gap while welding, I think it maybe the angle your welding at and the trigger
time is causing the problems, I would use a bit of the old scrapped floor to practice with the discs. Cheers Dave
Hey Now Dave.. Yes .. I have tried lowering/raising the voltage, lower/raising the wire speed and changing up the distance of the nozzle from the surface in efforts of controlling the heat. I should have practiced with the old floor.. for sure and will do so before I move on to the next one. Yes. the discs are steel (not stainless or galvanized). They are a perfect fit so there is no gap. Perhaps I should try to sand them down a little.. Thanks Dave!!

Hey Mark.. I purchased both 18 Gauge 3/4" and .035" thk 1.0" diameter steel sheets discs. The .035 is thin, but actually thicker than the boot floor in that area because it stood proud on the inside of the boot. It's a good thing I kep the old boot because I will clean off an area and practice on the next attempt.. my mistake for not doing so the first time... Also the discs are a prefect fit.. no gap whatsoever.. maybe that is a problem with heat and expansion... I'll get it.. but holy cow.. that first one is still not corrected.. if you do try it.. pleas let me know your technique and settings...
