this was what made me decide to learn unreal and not unity , its default vewport is so uninspiring....another aspect was blueprints.
I can also agree with package manager thing. I hate that you should export everything from package manager afterwards. Like wtf couldn't they at least put post processing as default. That is why unreal graphics look good without any adjustments because they apply post processing by default. Anyway those are little annoying details but I still use Unity and have no issues with it in general.

@@unclesam2941 oh yea I got that and I totally agree with him, but it's just funny considering it's the language known for speeeeeeeeed
He's technically right, although c++ is the fastest programming lang, it compiles very slowly. Although I've not used it with UE4 but I'd watched a UA-cam video of a Dev moving from unreal to unity and one of the reasons he gave is the compilation time of c++ unlike unity's c# (Microsoft's actually) which complies so quickly (5 to 10 sec) you can even compile in play mode and it would effect the changes.

@@Pontypants Hey there. So you have changed the game from a Stonageengine Workflow, to a Future Engine Workflow ?
"The model did work without changin anything" yes, welcome to unity.
Because. no model works out of the Box in Unreal. you need to invest a lot of hours for nothing, just to bring the basics to run, we do not talk from a game, only from thigns, unity douing out of the Box for you, unreal do not can do until today.

@@Pontypants Everytime you call anything in unreal "Supereasy" i need to wonder about.
The Animation System of Unreal, is a Nightmare. Even "Animation Montages" consuming tons of Time for - really nothing -
in Unity ( i think you will know this yourself now, was 2 Years ago) you eaven can write Transitions in Coding Scripts easy, you even can hit Layers in Animators per Script, this is 100% global usable, and very easy to do.
The Unreal UI, is a Nightmare without any end, and a very, very, very, very very very [......] very time consuming waste of time, for the most easy things
and the Animatino System of Unreal, is absolut 100% Stoneage...
@@Pontypants Unitys new Input System, is 100% Trash. The old can do this very easy, for every Controller you plugin. The new is consuming a lot of time for nothing, throw around 1000s of Scriptable Objects for ntohing, is complicatet to setup, bad to reach from scripts, and also not savable.
shortly: if you say. "This is like Unreal", i understand it better. It s really the Point, to do good Technology develop backwards to Stonage technology... true.
This is a topic I've put a lot of thought in the last few years, also because I've worked with both of them on a professional setting. If you primarily work on 3D, I'd go for Unreal, not only because of the engine itself, but also because of the whole creative ecosystem that Epic Games is building around it, which includes free access to Megascans (incredible resource and can't wait for its use in games to become more practical after UE5 comes out). Tbh Unreal Engine 5 itself is to me more than enough reason to become accustomed with UE4 now.
PS: and this is coming from someone with 4 years of experience in Unity and only 1 in UE
I’m in almost the exact same boat and I couldn’t agree more. If you’re doing a 3D game, UE4 should probably be your pick. Especially with the free for the month and permanently free collection of assets that are life savers at times
@@AppleGaming4Real permanently free assets??? 😵😵 how to take those free assets and convert them for unity? 🤔
@@no1aviator I believe there’s a rule against doing that according to their marketplace. So technically, against the law
@@AppleGaming4Real Really? Wow! What if the Unreal assets are created by third party developers? Like Combat animations? Couldn't they be downloaded from unreal and used in unity? Or are third party assets from unreal not free?
@@no1aviator from what I know, unreal paid to make them free so they are not allowed to be used in any other engine. It was meant to be something to make more people want to switch to UE4
Yeah I agree that C# is an easier language to grasp, and Unity is a pretty decent engine. I personally find that a lot of the features that allow you to do things in Unity are bought from the asset store where Unreal gives them to you for free. Unreal is also more developed, they have tons of new features their constantly coming out with. Not to sell Unity short, it's a great engine but getting decent water in Unity is pretty hard to pull off as well as their particle system and it's one of the things you need an expensive plugin for to really pull off good effects.
I tell you what.. If you're developing for yourself, you can use illegal copies of plugins and they will mostly work just as intended, but if you work in a company or just earning something from your games, then purchasing a bunch of plugins isn't expensive, like at all. Just remember how much Maya costs ($1600/year)

For the people out there; don't think you can develop a complex game without learning the programming principles and Object-Oriented Programming (OOP). Blueprints are cool because they give you faster iteration times than C++ and you don't have to deal with sophisticated syntax of C++

C++ in Unreal is cursed
Modern C++ (17 and coming up 20) is really easy to get into with the right documentation such as www.cppreference.com
but the way C++ is implemented in Unreal is absolutely repulsive
no real documentation on how everything meshes with Unreal's systems
half the stuff isn't even documented and it's just...
not good
@@xerxes8014 agreed, the systems they have in C++ are super confusing and the only way to learn about several types are by looking at source code or asking in forums. I think the reason they're like that is to enable the amount of platforms that the engine can support. They're also trying to make C++ seem like a higher level language than it actually is, which just makes a confusing mess if your coming from C++17 or something similar.
@@xerxes8014 You understand the UE4 C++ documentation wrong. The documentation is made for AAA Studios that have competent developers, not indie developers that don't know how to use a ternary operator. If you are going to understand C++ in the first place then using C++ is easy as a walk in the park.
@@again8550 you do know im talking about C++ *_in_* Unreal?

Mr Pants, with UE5's new rendering system i bet you can make it a full boxing stadium with 1000's of gummy blob people in the crowd.
You can do the same in Unity with Unity DOTS
@@abuUthmani But implementation is slower. Even with faster graphics card. If UE5's demo is true, we can do it retaining every texture and tessellation without much degradation in FPS.
@@Ko-ei2cm this is true but think about it, if unreal nanite system actually works, it becomes one of the game industry revolutions of the generation, and if that's true, not all the game creating companies are gonna pay 5% of their income to epic games, so they implement it themselves, and so, the unity will implement it too! but UE5 will always be the one implement it first :)
Unity suport dots where u can have 100k+ of active objects in scene like enemies.
@@ciixo8510 I think they have to pay something as UE5's source code even though open-source, it is difference from what Godot is offering. Both have different Open Source licenses. If we want to use UE5's features in our own implementation, we need to get license or pay for it. Please refer some valid source for more details.

I've been using Unity for 4 years and I had no idea 9:15
Fantastic video. I’ve been working with Unity for two years and just about half a year ago I started learning Unreal and I really like that it is a more complete product by itself. Personally my favorite language is C++ but in Unreal it doesn’t make sense to use it for everything, it’s more like basic design stuff. I’m really struggling with visual scripting, it is my least favorite thing mainly because it seems so slow to me and dofficult to read once you have more and more of it. Really couldn’t make up my mind yet. One thing I like about Unreal is that you can look into the code and see how the engine does everything that it does.

Hey dude, u made my day! Seriously, music and scenes are awesome. Nice job!
Considering that short incursion in Unity, I can share my experience: I used Unity for a couple of months, following courses and finishing complete projects in proper way. Then I decided to switch to UE4. I totally agree with all what you said about choosing the most appropriate engine. But even if Unity has been improved and I have great respect for it and it's community, things like integration of Bolt are relatively new features when Its a core functionality of UE4 for a while now (being said, there is another Unity module for visual scripting whose development will continue in parallel so 🤔...) and some other few features like this, we must admit that at the moment Unity is most a kinda follower more than leader.
UE4, in spite of its relative difficulty is a finally very agreeable software considering UI appearance for example. Personal opinion of course but in fact the way you feel like with one or another is the only thing important to consider because as you said it, they both worth it.
Keep on giving us so much fun!
Thank you so much 'cause u gave me inspiration for my own game and with UE4.

Stay with the engine you're used to.
Even if some people talk about how "Unity in general is a better engine for making games" you'll probably never reach a point where you wouldn't be able to progress in unreal.
That being said, i feel like learning unity is a bit more useful as opposed to unreal which to me feels like an engine designed towards a fewer selections of game genres.
Unity also has a bigger community so it's easier to search up information on a subject, since EVERYTHING has been done.
if you're a 3d artist, then i would recommend unreal since it's easier to put things together and make it look nice :)
(though this can also be achieved through a few menus in unity)
@D.A. Botos It’s not about the graphical demos. It’s about the fact that Unity is better suited for more types of games than Unreal is, most significantly 2D and mobile, and maybe simulation games. That’s why OP said that learning Unity is more helpful, even though Unreal might look better.
@D.A. Botos Sorry, could you clarify?
Trying out different game engines for simple projects like this is pretty much pointless. Both unity and unreal can do it..
@D.A. Botos You’re right that MARS is paid (and it’s a bad decision IMO) but it’s not really needed for AR. Bolt (used to be paid) is free too (2.0 stopped development).
If you wanted to see real paywalls, check out Unity before 2015. You needed a hundred dollar license for iOS, Android and so on. You also needed a license for real time shadows and a profiler. All those paywalls are gone now.
@D.A. Botos They don’t? That’s Unreal. Unreal takes a 5% cut after $1mil total (which is amazing, don’t get me wrong). Unity requires you buy a per-seat license ($399 a year) after your company reaches more than $100k yearly revenue. That’s around 0.39% per seat, maximum.

Here's a tip. I always create 2 scripts for the main character. One is the actual locomotion+combat+shooting+othermechanics script and second is the controller input script. The mechanics scripts takes the controller input script as an input. For NPCs the mechanics script remains the same but the controllerinput script is swapped by something else. This way I don't have to reprogram everytime I want to change the controller settings, I just make changes in the controller input script.

Great vid Ponty! I made a few projects in both Unity and Unreal, and have to say working in Unreal feels more fluid, the engine feels more polished, everything is where it needs to be and you don't need to break your brain to set it up as you want it, the downside is the C++, I personally don't like visual scripting just because I prefer the coding way but that's just me.
Unity however has a faster workflow and C# is my favourite language, but the engine always feels like if you want something to be done your way or if you want to tweak some thigs, more often than not it will break something in the engine and the debug log will over run you with error messages which is just frustrating since you have to go back and forth fixig things your entire project.
Unity needs to polish up their engine a bit and it would be just a muah *candy bar*, for now it feels like licking on a cactus, sorta 😂
