    Just another compliment for you. I have been studying Finnish for about 5 years. Many books, two tutors. I never noticed, and no one except for you has ever pointed out the simple idea that to change to negative “You just take the “n,” “t,” etc. and add it to the letter “e.” So simple. You continue to be very helpful. I think I remember you saying you do not have a language degree or official certificate of any sort to teach Finnish, but you should be given an honorary degree or certificate right now!! Ha ha. Keep up the great work. I hope you never quit doing this because many of us have made you a huge part of our learning process.

      Oh wow this is such a sweet comment. Seriously thank you so much / kiitos todella paljon! Yeah I have never planned to teach Finnish and don't have any teaching experience outside of youtube. I just enjoy doing it. Maybe some things I point out are not technically the "correct" way of explaining something haha but if it works and is easy to remember why not xD Just something I happen to notice and want to share :D

    Kat,
    Your videos have accomplished where dozens of language apps failed - I am actually getting the hang of the Finnisb Language. I feel basic grammar is the most important step to understanding Suomi. It's one thing to pick up common courtesy phrases but to really get started and understand, grammar needs to come first before vocabulary. It's a cart and horse thing. I love your videos and look forward to them. I have spent hours at work catching up on old videos. People said to me - You will never learn Finnish. So now thanks to your help all I have to say to them now is "Vittu" 😄
    You make learning Suomi fun and relaxing. Thank you for what you do.
    Unless I missed it in your videos, would you mind talking about the Noun cases determined by English preposition such as -ssa, -sta, -lla etc.
    I was watching a replay of the World Junior Hockey Championships and it throw me off when the commentators talked about Hirvon-sta - I assume it's because the goal was scored -from- Hirvonen ?

    Nice video! A difference with the books I have access to is that one can leave off only the 1st 2 persons: the third person are according to official guidelines, never left off. So, hän and he never get left off, unless the sentence is impersonal of course. Thanks for the video! Especially the puhekieli bit!!

    kiitos paljon! thank you very much, it's even more interesting when you tell about puhekieli because all language apps use kirjakieli. I have a question! And what about exception verbs - nähdä, for example - it turns to "minä näen", and how to form the negative form? Minä en näe?

    • @KatChatsFinnish
      @KatChatsFinnish  2 роки тому +2

      Yes! It’s Minä en näe, sinä et näe, hän ei näe (or hän ei nää in puhekieli), emme näe/me ei nähdä. Te ette näe, he eivät näe :)

  • @johnl7599
    @johnl7599 2 роки тому

    Wow! I never realized how complicated Finnish really is. I learned Finnish puhe kieli as a child. Never went to school in Finland to learn actual grammar rules. Such as vowel harmony. I can just "tell" when a word sounds wrong or awkward. I can see how difficult it is for new learners. I once met an American who had studied Finnish kirja kieli very well. But it felt awkward speaking with him because he did not use puhe kieli.

    • @jonasbenjamin645
      @jonasbenjamin645 2 роки тому

      Yes, that's the problem with diglossia. There should be some methods for foreigners on how to learn puhekieli.

      mmm... in other languages it dose exist and you probably have a version of it in Finnish? and always when saying to other language speakers something in their native language, they are positively surprised and while it is possible to use google to translate most words, some do not exist there or in the Urban dictionary.
      The word Femina-zi probably have versions in different languages which can surprise which is a positive thing and if you have a version of it, please write it down and make a video so we will know how it sounds. That will be really cool and such a video will stand out as a progressive video that share words that exist in humanity in a nonofficial way. You now, like slang...
